I'm stuck in a decision between the NC or the Atrix laptop dock. Money is not an issue in this decision.
Honeycomb 7" tablet or accessory that is useless without the phone?
Thank you all for your time.

Well there ya go. Highly customizable device, or a laptop dock that has webtop.
You can install Cyanogen and stuff like that, plus it's much less than the dock.
However, you can have the laptop which charges your phone. I bought one yesterday and tried it out. I like it, but kind of wish I spent the money on a new tablet.
If money isn't an issue, get both!
I love my lapdock. I use it instead of a PC now (no joke). Yeah it's slower than a quad core intel box but who cares. Pimpn' aint easy..

Not to mention all the looks you'll get when you have a laptop with a phone sticking out of it
I'm responding to you on my laptop dock. I have a nook color, a laptop dock and a decent laptop and it may just be the novelty but I like the laptop dock. I should note I'm also biased because I got the lapdock with the letstalk firesale so it was pretty cheap.
the nook color is great but I cant find uses for it other than reading and playing casual games on it. The lapdock gives me a charger/normal dock when its closed, and when its opened I can take notes in google docks and text in class without the professor stopping class to admonish me. I bought a datel wireless wii retro controller and I've got all my emulators on here now, its all very neat package. It reminds me of an apple product, it does what I want, and not much else.Oh I should say, hulu works but its slower than a decent pc.
I'm going to sell the nook color, its got gingerbread on it but I hardly use it with the lapdock around and 4" is big enough to read on. The nook color is a great device and I'll sell you mine in fact if you decide on it but I wouldnt blame you if you went with the lapdock.
I don't have a laptop dock so I can't speak for that, but I am really diggin' my Nook Color rooted with a custom Froyo2.2 rom tethered to my Atrix. I travel some and on a plane and the Nook is perfect for that imho. At home someone ALWAYS has my Nook. If it isn't my Wife catching up on her soaps it is my Daughter watching some Hannah Montana. Then the Boy gets it when (if) the girls let it down and he goes to town playing games. I had to wait for quite some time today just to put a custom bootimage on the darn thing.
Good thing that I have the Atrix to play with...
That dock has to be so cool it hurts. But I wouldn't trade my Nook for it. Maybe 2laptop docks, if there was an extra phone included. But that's the only way. Now if that dock was touchscreen as well as keyboard/mouse then I might fold.
For $250 bucks the nook color is a steal. But then again obviously im bias . But seriously the xoom is sweet and all but it isnt $700 cool. 250 and its a a good ereader and can run froyo, cm7 (2.3) and honey comb.....you can even dual boot it. Right now I've been playing n64 on it a ton, never knew I missed star fox so much :-(. Oh, and battery...right now im at 73% unplugged for 3 days 12 hours. And you can now tether it to your phone and use the gps on your nook. IMO if you want the latop dock just buy a netbook and use the phone portal.
Sent from my Nook Color on Honeycomb 1.1 OC
Now that Bluetooth's working, you should get a Nook Color, a case that lets you prop it up in landscape, and a small BT keyboard (the Motorola one maybe?). But I'm also biased
Hmm little hard too decide if i had too make a decision, Which i have the laptop dock which i use it everyday because i watch movies on it and it even charges my phone at the same time and sometimes i don't even have too charge the laptop dock for up too 2 days sense the battery on it lasts really long. I like too see a netbook do that Which i have 2 and the battery life on them don't compare too the laptop dock life.
But i also have the samsung galaxy tab which is overclocked too 1.4ghzs and running voodoo kernel and i really like it which i take with me also but i mostly use the atrix and dock more than it lol.
Laptop dock ain't for everyone but i like mine.
Cant wait till custom roms and the webtop gets customized which should make it run so much better and im sure it will happen. Even a overclock kernel will make the webtop run better.
Oh dear, Oh dear, I am so pleased I came here. And I am basically clueless having just arrived from the iPhone world. Thank you for the guidance. Heading out for a Nook.
On another note, for purely aesthetic reasons, I could not resist buying an Apple bluetooth keyboard last night and trying to get it to get with it with the Atrix. It ain't happening; any wise offerings would be great.

I never knew the laptop dock got that much battery, that's pretty cool though. I guess it comes down to the individual. I'm already lugging my m11x (I use the term lugging loosely since it's only like a 4 lb laptop/netbook) to work everyday so for me to have that laptop dock with me isn't practical but I can see how it could be to people. Obviously my atrix is noticibly faster than my NC but it isn't slow by any means, but for $250 it fits my needs for random movies, angry birds, and the n64 emulator.
So honestly I think both are great, just pick one that fits your life and needs more..... Then buy the other with the next check :-D

Maybe wait and get one of the new tablets or galaxy tab. I do have the nook color myself and like it, the bt will work decent soon, the only downside is you cant put it on a tv, or can you? On the other hand laptop dock can be done via webtop hack+usb charger and some bt kb and mouse.

Ya wouldn't make sense too get the laptop dock if you already have the m11x which is also good on battery life from what i herd, Almost got one myself couple days ago but decided just too get a 9cell for my asus 1201n for now which does decent on most games and i do like to play my windows games when im on the go sometimes.
Ya i was surprised how well the battery is on the laptop dock is, Because from what i herd its around 4000mah ony but i guess from having just the screen and keyboard and mouse ony helps alot and than the phone which ony takes couple watts probably.

Yep you can go that way which i knew about it before i got the laptop dock but you wont have the nice big 11.6 screen too watch videos or browse the web on the go
Watching videos on the 4in screen now feels a bit weird too me even tho i did watch alot of movies on my zune hd which is 3in but than i got the galaxy tab 7in and wouldn't go back anything smaller for watching videos well more like movies sense i could watch youtube videos and stuff on the 4in screen.
Than i would have too carry more stuff with me mouse keyboard and a usb charger with the laptop dock i have a all in one.
Alot of people that wouldn't bother them, But i hate carrying alot of stuff with me than when i have too leave from somewhere i have too put all that stuff away lol

try this:
1.) turn on bluetooth on phone (check 'make discoverable' box)
2.) turn on keyboard in pairing mode (led should be blinking)
3.) scan for devices on phone
4.) select the keyboard, and when pairing request comes up type '1234' or '0000'
5.) immediately after type the same 4 digit code from above into the keyboard and press return, and you should be connected.
let me know if that works, i had similar issues trying to pair a microsoft bluetooth keyboard (wireless entertainment keyboard 7000, awesome btw, touchpad and shortcuts all work) but following those steps works every time for me now.
Thank you, Thank you, worked like a charm. Much appreciated. I can take the plastic wrapper off this keyboard. Pause, I'll check out your reccommended keyboard first.

and to chime in on the original poster's question, i would go with the nook color now for the price/customizability. The laptop dock still continues to intrigue me... however i refuse to buy at its current price.
I have a HTC Evo 3D. I'm needing to connect a USB mouse and/or hub. The unusual part is that I will also like to be able to power the phone from an external source like a car cigarette lighter. I have Muscular Dystrophy with limited mobility and will be using a mouse to control the phone. My wheelchair has the ability to power additional devices through a cigarette lighter type jack.
Does this sound possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I know the latest tablets are getting external device driver capabilities, but I'm not sure about the 3D. The fact we can print from it is promising, maybe after Ice Cream Sandwich or a Honeycomb port?

Hello! First, I want to say that I am amazed at people like you. My sister-in-law works with an autistic teenager and the schoolwork he does via his iPod is amazing. I think that he can churn out more schoolwork than I did when I was his age....
Now, to answer your questions - yes, the EVO can be powered via a 12-volt cigarette-lighter jack, so that won't be a problem. On the other hand, the mouse will be. At the hardware level, the EVO is a USB device and it needs to be a USB host (like a laptop or desktop computer) to take input from a mouse. However, I think a simple USB cable hack might solve that issue. I'll see if I can turn up a web page or two about the hack.
Secondly, Android isn't set up to be 'driven' via a mouse, but I have heard that people have done it successfully.
The real unknown is if we can do all these things with the EVO 3D....
If anyone else would care to 'chime in' to fill in the details that I don't know, please do....
when/if this phone gets rooted and we get some cyanogenmod love, it can use mouse input over bluetooth same with keyboard input. im gonna be nice (for once) this is posted in the wrong section. this is the development section NOT Q&A. pm a mod to move to the correct location.
It makes sense for development if he's planning to do the cable hack and write a driver himself.
That said, i am not aware of any micro usb keyboards, and though there very well may be some, especially if you look up blackberry accessories. If that doesn't work, the usb to microusb cable job is straightforward, just lookup the pinouts and match up the internal cables.
As for power while it is plugged in, just use a splitter on your 9v source, and attach one to the keyboard usb power cables and one to the power pins on the hacked microusb plug.
After that, I don't know for the driver, and but as mentioned before cm7 does bluetooth keyboards (and mice?) - can we install drivers without root? How does that work?

You can pair a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with the stock 3vo. Power the device with a normal charger. Unfortunately the mouse is useless as there is no cursor. The keyboard is novel though. I used a Logitech MX5000 series.

First, thanks to everyone for trying to help.
Let me explain how I use my PC at home. My wheelchair has a small LCD display for the current mode/status of the chair like power, speed mode, and tilt. Plus it has an infrared transmitter that can be used to operate typical home theater electronics. The chair also has mouse emulation. When in the mouse mode the joystick that usually moves the chair becomes the mouse. The movement is translated and sent out through the infrared transmitter to a USB infrared receiver. The infrared receiver is HID compliant so it works on about everything. I'm hoping to find a solution similar to this on the Evo 3D.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to move enough to make the gestures. It pretty much needs to be the joystick/infrared built-in to the chair. Thanks for the idea though.

I have all the motorola photon accessories I bought them from sprint, and they are all fan freakin tastic, the docking station the car cradle and the motorola blue tooth keyboard, everything is from motorola. I have my photon set up to use as a web tv on my flatscreen its absolutely amazing, I am using it right now typing on the bluetooth keyboard, there are no downfalls to this surfing is fast and snappy but I will tell you this I have netflix also and I have to open the app from the phone and switch it to full screen because if you use the mozilla firefox web browser to go to the netflix site it won't register a an authorized device so open the app from the phone and switch to full screen I am fortunate enough to live in a great 4g coverage area and I have no lags whatsoever or buffering, and. Jsut so you know I am running the stock rom the only thing I did was root the photon for the free wifi, I have had my photon for about 2 weeks, since I broke my epic, and was a die hard epic fan now I have both I started a new line of service and it only cost me an extra 15dollars a month for 2 lines so I switch back and forth when the battery gets low and I don't want to wait I just grab the other phone and off I go, but I will tell you this that having the docking station and the keyboard I don't use my laptop as much anymore, I work in web based IT so I am always on the net and this setup does averything I need, I walk up to my next project pop out the kick stand and pull out the keyboard and off to work I go, its really simplified my life a whole lot I hardly ever use my epic anymore, but it was my favorite so I can't see myself giving it up. Well my friends as for the car dock its amazing once you put the photon in the car dock it turns into a gps automatically and it comes with all the wires you need if you want to hook it up to the auxhillary port (hmm don't think I spelled that right!!!) Then the main screen give you 4 slots to put whatever app you use most, I use my phone to listen to my music thru the car speakers so that's how I have mine set up, well that's the end of this long post I hope it was helpful, if so don't forget to hit the thanks button, Later!!!!!

With out the cables the dock is useless. You can do what most people do and cut/modify the dock but the cable solution is a better way to go. I, for one, do not have a steady enough hand (or patience) to do the mod.

So I got the lapdock yesterday. it does have a battery which charges the phone at the same time as powering the screen.
I haven't gotten to test it on my RAZR as I found out my RAZR's HDMI port has crapped out. I did take the dock to the local Verizon store and tested it on one of the display RAZr's and it works great. Just wish the cables were a bit longer, they are only about 6 inches long.
I've got a new RAZR coming in the mail, and should be here Tuesday, so I will be able to give a go review then.
Also, the HDMI cable seems to be somewhat loose, and can lose connection easy, so all4cellular has sent me a new one of those as well.
Is the display on the Atrix lapdock wide screen like the 100 & 500? I never seen on in person & some pictures look like it is yet others don't. I think the 100 is too small & the 500 is too big but this one might be just right for me, plus with it on sale all over the place it's a better buy right now assuming don't need anything the extra features you get on the 500 (not sure if the 100 offers anything more) .
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
Besides multitouch on the track pad,I don't know of anything else the 500 has over this. The atrix Lapdock has 2 usb ports.
I don't know if they consider it wide screen or not but 11.6" makes it wide for it's size.
I'm trying to figure out a way for the phone to mount to the dock, so it's easier to move.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
Hi Killer Turtle, Once my lapdock comes, i am looking in to making a mod to it so it will work the same as the padfone.
once its here i can take the size of the screen, the cables etc... and then i can plan of the design.
Is it closer to 16:9 or 4:3. I haven't even been able to find any specs on the Atrix lapdock anymore.
I'm thinking the that the 100 is basically the same as the Atrix & the smaller screen is possible about the same width but it's shorter due to being a wider aspect ratio. The 500 besides being bigger also has a video out & an Ethernet port with PoE.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
It's 16:9. Screen measures 10.125/5.75
This also has 2 usb ports, the 100 doesn't have any.

Current review:
I'm currently using the Atrix Lapdock on with my RAZR. So far I'm loving it. Only issue I have come across so far is that the Flash version on Webtop isn't the latest verion, so some flash games on Facebook don't play.
Likes:
Wieght - really light compared to my Dell netbook.
Screen size-A lot larger then my netbook. And it is wide screen, image holding your phone sideways and enlarging the screen to 11.6"
Keyboard/Mouse-Didn't think having a keyboard and mouse would be that important with a phone, but now that I have them it's awesome.
When the screen is closed, the phone treats it like a normal dock, so you can set you phone to different Dock profiles, like Alarm Clock.
Love having the USB ports to add things like camers & drives.
Love the battery-Have had it on since 8:00 CST and it's still got 2 of 5 lights lit. Screen has not turned of since.
Dislike:
Need to figure out how to better mount the phone.
Sometimes it doesn't come up and fill the whole screen, about 1/4" space all the way around.
Wish there were more option for Apps to install, like Open Office (right now using the phone full screen for for this)
Once I get more time with it, I will update my Likes/Disklikes with more. So far really liking it though.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Atrix Lapdock using XDA
Using it right now. I'd say it's a nice buy, works fairly well with the RAZR. The cables included are very short, though, which makes it hard to mount the phone right. I modded it to allow direct connection, but it's a bit tricky to get the connections to work properly (my own fault, probably.) The software is also pretty mediocre. I'm using the ICS leak on my RAZR, and instead of an Ubuntu-type OS it's basically tablet Android... except it's still got phone apps (except for a few stock apps and my launcher.) Everything's blown up, which is really irritating. Still works fine, but I feel Motorola needs to work more on this. Or if someone with dev experience were to force apps to use a tablet interface, it would be perfect.
I decided to go to with the Atrix lapdock, it should be here on Monday. I think this will be the perfect compromise for good screen size while being compact. I really wish it had a web Cam like the 500, I think I might try to add an internal Cam for a laptop if enjoy using the lapdock.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
I ordered it a couple of days off of Amazon for $60. Flipped the ports and shaved down the plastic pieces to make it fit and it works like a charm for both my wife's stock ICS and my rooted custom ICS ROM (Eclipse 1.1). I know some folks like the old webtop interface better but the interface is so smooth now. And plus, it has one thing that other tablets don't have: touch typing without an additional peripheral which was important to me. It is also definitely better with a bluetooth mouse but the trackpad is passable.
If you have a lapdock, where did you find extension cables for the ports in case I didn't want to shove it into the back? The best I can find right now for a set of female to male micro HDMI and USB cables is almost $30 including shipping (that's half the cost of the dock).
Also, what are some of your favorite apps in webtop mode? Been digging QuickOffice and the stock Google apps.

Just picked this lapdock up today at radio shack for $19.97. Also wondering the best local spot to get extension cables just to have them

$20? Wow! You'd be paying more for the cables then.

Not much of a link to post. I read this thread yesterday. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343268
I called my local radio shack and they had one. The guy working there couldn't believe it was marked that low on clearance. I hurried up there before they could tell me "it was sold". Have them look up that part number because they didn't think they had one til they searched. I think you can have then search other stores nearby also.

Thanks for the info. I just picked one up. I checked within 25 miles but all out of stock. I wanted to get some and give them to people here if they paid shipping.

At first i thought this thing was gimmicky. After using it for a week i can say this thing is great. With the logitech wireless mouse this acts just like a laptop. Scrolling with mouse, copy and paste like windows. Alt/tab shortcut to pull up other programs. I could mention more but... Basically i don't even turn my laptops on now.

I'm not there yet but I do use it more frequently than I thought I would. The keyboard takes a bit getting used to and the mouse is huge, too.
After a few days with it too all i can say is that i love it. My Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7272 gaming laptop is a monster of a thing to be handling so when i found out about the $20 deal i thought i would give it a shot. Its pretty sweet. Charges
he phone while using it (not that i have to worry about charge with Razr Maxx). Wireless mouse works perfectly and keyboard has no delay at all.
2 things i dont like: 1 The area to the right of where you plug your phone in gets really hot. Even after 10 minutes of use. I'm sure that will shorten the life of cables and conections in that area.
2.I cant get my maxx to sit well enough in the plug so it keeps disconnecting here and there. Seen as the maxx has to be standing up i didnt really expect it to work. So i'll keep am eye open for a good deal on small extension cables for it so it can be chilling on the table. Or i'll keep trying to think of a way to mount the phone on the dock.

Anybody interested in buying an Atrix lapdock that has been reconfigured for RAZR?
Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is allowed on the forum. I was selling my Atrix lapdock that I was using for RAZR MAXX on eBay, and got into a big mess with buyer and eBay (long story). Anyway, I don't trust eBay anymore so I'm looking to see if anybody is interested in buying it on XDA. If so, please PM me. I have a solid past eBay history and am willing to explain and arrange for a lower price than what was sold on eBay. Thanks in advance!
