I thought that I was completely sold on the thought of getting a 3VO. That was until I found out about the Within (Galaxy II), now I have all kinds of doubts. To make matters worse, now I've learned about the Nexus Prime. The only problem is that there is no real info about the Prime, it all seems to rumors for now. Lets get this conversation going. How does everyone feel about this?
I feel like whenever someone says "3VO", a cat gets killed. SGSII and 3D are both great phones. It don't matter which one to me.

Its not called the Within anymore. It'll be called the Epic Touch 4G. And it might have a Qualcomm chip, not a hummingbird. (Or whatever the current SGS2 has.) So.. especially.... We aren't getting the SGS2

I face a similar dilemma. BUT, I was impatient and picked up a 3VO yesterday. Now, I've never messed around with the galaxy s2, but holy crap the 3VO is awesome. I rooted of course (couldn't help myself) and have installed custom roms and a kernel which lets me oc until about 1.8 (stable). The phone is incredible. I figure IF the samsung galaxy s2 comes out within the next 30 days and it's as good as I've heard, I can always return this bad boy and get one.
For now though, I'm VERY happy with my purchase. Although the 3D thing has been described as a gimmick, it's a very cool one and I'd be lying if I said I don't get a kick out of it (especially in games).
As for the Prime, not enough solid info on it yet. We'll see.

3d? are you talking about the lg opitimus 3d or Hauwei's new 3d. 3VO makes it easy to idenitify out phone, you should have voted in the poll to decide the nick name of the 3VO.
Op you can't really go wrong with either one. I would suggest to wait till the within is released and go hold both in your hand. And go play with the 3d on a friends phone to see if you like it. Don't make your decision based on the 3d pics the phone takes, look youtube 3d. I personally have hated how every samsung phone has felt in my hand.

I do not buy on impulse alone. I like to make well informed decisions on my buys. I take all opinions, put them together with mines, and hopefully make a decision I can live with.
The sgs2 will probably not get as much development work done as the epic touch. It will end up probably being as bad as the original epic.

I would be shocked if it had a Qualcomm chip in it, though I have heard rumors of a watered down Tegra2 American version...none have been founded, and a Qualcomm chip is even more absurd of an idea....
For development, features & faster software updates. Go with the EVO 3D.
For Specs, NFC & an a colorful screen you have the Samsung.
It's hard to talk about a phone that isn't even stateside yet. Samsung has a bad track record .vs HTC.

After owning the EVO-3D for a month, I am really digging it, Sense 3.0 is growing on me, and the phone is no slouch, it is crazy fast, and the battery life is ****ing amazingly better than my rooted and ROM'd EVO 4G. At first I wasn't so impressed with this new phone over my ROM'd EVO 4G, but now I am liking it more and more. And it's still stuck in lame stock mode, just wait...
But I keep reading all over the net how awesome the Samsung Galaxy S2 is, and it's the best device on the market right now, etc..nothing comes close to it, blah...blah...blah...
I think once the 3VO gets root, and the custom ROM's start popping up, it will be the better device or easily just as good as the Galaxy S2 ? Plus it looks like here in the U.S. we might be getting a crippled S2, instead will be a dual core Infuse 4G with Gingerbread, as opposed to the real true Galaxy S2 in Europe.
I am waiting for Myn's 3VO ROM

It's cool. Sorry I posted this thread here. I was trying to make a point, defending the EVO-3D, because I normally see people bashing the 3D as a gimick.
Take the 3D away, and this phone is still a beast and one of the top Android devices of 2011. 1.2ghz dual core...1gb RAM...high resolution screen...Sense 3.0...etc...

well evo 3d is nice, but there's this hudge problem with htc. whenever they make a phone a 1st it comes out with full of bugs + they will promise you bunch of accsessories that they will never make and at the end consumer is the one in the hole, because we trusted them. Don't get me wrong I love my evo 3d, but I don't want to by MHL adaptor from T-mobile and I want a normal cable, and I want the HTC's promised kickstand case that they fkt everyone on I hate bolky cases that make already big phone look like some old satelite phone. so far I think is Motorola is ahead of everybody. they update there phones first to latest android version, they have bunch of grate accessories like multimedia docks with remote controls, laptop dock, cases, cables and more. and the lates phones hardware is pritty impresive as well. so as much as I like my evo 3d I think it is a last one I will ever get. I bought my phone on june 24th so there's no 30 day mbg for me, but I thing Ill just pay full price and get that motorola photon on july 31th. sorry had to get that out of my system I bought only htc's for past 5-6 years but just got tired of geting jurked around by them.
I think a lot of it is just the next new thing fever. It will happen every time a big release comes out. I love my 3d too but as a gadget freak I enjoy seeing what is coming out and I would own them all if I could

Instead of answering that question I would like to offer advice instead. There are a lot of people on Ebay that are selling used devices that are in mint condition, and have all the box, documentation, and what not, you could message each seller to find out what hboot it is. Obviously most of them will need to be told how to find that out for you.
The benefit of this is a cheaper buy, and you get what you want and your son won't know it isn't brand new, or be able to explain to him why you had to go that route. I think unless you are getting refurbished (and not even then sometimes) will you get hboot 1.4.

I have an upgrade as of December 1st and radio shack has the 3D on sale for $100 with a 2 year extension. I can't really beat that price on eBay. If it comes with hboot 1.5 its not really a big deal, just more of a hassle. I just have to read up on flashing using fastboot. If anything I will learn something new. Thanks for your input though.

Unless you just get extremely lucky, a new 3D, purchased from a brick and mortar store, or even online, from the same stores, will have hboot 1.5 on it. It looks like TeamEvil is close to having an S-OFF solution for the 1.5 hboot, so it might not matter what Hboot you have soon. No watermarked bootloader for me, thank you very much.
hboot 1.50 here, no biggie, not really a issue for ME. I have watermarked bootloader, blah blah blah. lol

Yeah you are quite right about that, definitely can't beat that for a new device (the 3D anyhow). Are you going for the 3D for him because of that upgrade price? For slightly more you could upgrade to something better. The 3D is going to die soon in terms of developer support, there aren't that many to begin with but specially with better hardware already out, or coming out soon the 3D while still young, is going to die off.
for that price you cant really beat it... 1.5 is a pain in the ass but it still works fine... maybe consider saving ur upgrade for the next "evo" instead?

There is a lull in development, though, but mainly because cyanogenmod doesn't have any nightlies for the 3D (I think there's an alpha, but the thread is closed, and I can't find it on goo-inside.me). Also, with ICS just being released, devs are at work making a rom available.
Just look at the evo 4G. It's still going strong 18 months after release. Once CM gets going with CM9, and some more sense 3.5+ roms are leaked, preferably with some Wimax love, we should be seeing more roms.
This is just my opinion, and I could be wrong....so don't take what I say personal

That is a possibility, I do agree we will see a little more developer activity with sense 3.5, ICS, cm being used as a base when it is more complete, etc. however I meant things a little differently. While the 3D isn't the least popular device among users or developers it hasn't had the type of device that has received extraordinary development that a lot of other devices have even from the beginning of its release. The 4g started out so popular because it was a revolutionary device from sprint. The first 4g phone, and several other never before seen features so it started out so popular, and remains relevant because the hardware it has is still relevant. So the 4g was a special case. Aside from being 3D, which is really just a gimmick, the 3D didn't bring any revolutionary hardware or never before seen features to us, so it started out with less interest, and now the hardware is being beat by the latest devices, and devices coming soon. So aside from the things already mentioned that may give a little bump from A SELECT GROUP of developers it will die quickly. After the excitement of ICS and sense 3.5+ wears off the development of it will fade as less and less people still have it and developers get newer, better, more exciting, and popular devices.
Just like you, this is more of my educated guess and perception than fact, but I am willing to bet it is/will be fact soon.

I am going with the 3D because that's what he wants. He also said he was interested in the new nexus but I am not really a fan of Samsung. My first android was the moment and that left a bad taste in my mouth. Although I did learn allot about flashing roms and kernels with the POS. It forced me to learn. I would just hold off on my upgrade for the next HTC phone but I dont see one in the near future with the release of the evo design.

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with the Samsung device. If the 3D is what he wants, that's cool. No more explanation needed, I had wondered if this was your decision or his. I hope you get that new evo design soon. Until then, plenty more can be done with the 3D to improve it. It certainly is not a bad phone, I like the hardware, it does what it should do. I definitely think some new software and features would really take things up a notch!

He didn't really say wich one he wanted more. He wants the nexus because its a google phone and he wants the 3D because of the 3D camera. Personally I wouldn't get the nexus because its a Samsung but if he didn't like the 3D function so much I would get him the nexus.

Which carrier is your son on now? If he is on Verizon, I'd just stay, and wait for the Nexus, which could be released in the next week and a half. If your son is on Sprint, get the 3D, or even consider the Epic Touch 4G (Galaxy S2). It may be made by Samsung, but it's a far cry from the moment of 2009. I see listings on craigslist, of people wanting to trade their 3D for an Epic Touch 4G all the time (even one made by me....).

Yeah I really did pick the worst Samsung device, but in my defense when I bought the moment it had good reviews. I guess it wasn't that bad of a phone considering its still going strong today, minus working GPS.

It is ok, you can say it, you hated the piece of **** and you want the engineers that designed it to burn in a Christmas pageant fire. That will keep the topic on point for the holidays lol. The 3D camera is a neat little gimmick, but that's what it is, a gimmick. When glasses free 3D gets to the point of being very widespread, like all devices can display it regardless of being able to capture it, and the brightness, vivid color, and HD resolution comes along then we can consider it too cool to pass up. Even without the 3D, the hardware is still good so hopefully when that excitement wears off he will still be happy with it lol

I think you are right about the 3D feature being a gimmick but besides that I still am very happy to own one. I bought it for the specs not for the 3D. My son doesn't think its a gimmick. He says that's what makes this phone awesome. I will keep mine until HTC comes out with a LTE Evo.

Sense 3.6 not 4.0 on the sensation BTW. This confirmed by Jeff Gordon in a recent interview, who is in charge of global communications for HTC...also the guy is around this site too and posts some.
If 3D is pointless to you and you want to knock the device then why get it in the first place.
To the OP that choice is up to u as everyone has their own belief on it. It's like saying if u should get HTC or Samsung phone...endless debate and only one opinion matters and that's ur own.

I do love the phone itself. Just the amount of devs on the sensation makes me envious. The only thing I don't like bout the evo is spotty wimax.

That's a question for you to answer yourself. We can't tell you whether or not you like your phone. Me? I like this phone. It doesn't have the same impact as the OG Evo did on me (that being my first ever decent phone) but it's still a pretty solid phone. Been able to run ICS on it since I got it after the New Year. I see very little wrong with this phone.
Devs for the Evo are better. 'nuff said. Yeah. Thats right. I said at it. And I'm a badass too. Come at me.

This is a true statement. Some of the devs have been with us for a while being that they've stayed with Sprint all this time. We start getting to know everyone.

Everything in this post, except for the timeframe of ICS updates, is so untrue. Just saying.
I was drawn to EVO 3d becouse of its design, like it more than Sensation. Having 1gb of rom, opposite to Sensations 768mb, was a one more reason to have it. Not to mention that it should be HTC's flag ship. When all started heading down hill, seed of doubt was planted. Wanted to hear other people opinions.

Love my evo, just not happy with sprints data speeds in my area, sensation is getting ics sooner which doesnt make since to me, what do i know though. I never really use the 3d feature. Sprint has some catching up to do service wise. If i was in the market now for a new phone and carrier, i would look elsewhere. Im not hating sprint or evo. Dont take it that way. In my area, dataspeeds are horrible, may be ok for you though if your in a major metro area.

The 1gb of RAM compared to the sensations 768Mb did it for me. Usually its not a huge deal...but c'mon we're talking about two sense phones here lol.
I personally do like the 3D feature of the device two, pretty much to the point so far where I might only purchase another phone if it had 3D (which is unlikely since im a minority)
If I were you, I'd get the Sensation because it has a bigger user base = more devs.

Go where there is a more robust developing community. Not bashing anybody who develops on this phone since they made my EVO 3D a beast, but I realized that huge International phones like the Sensation and GSII are miles ahead in getting things done.
Guys, why did some of you buy the Evo 3D first hand at all - if not of for the 3D?
THAT should've been the main reason - best 3D compared to any other phone, and good overall performance for everything else (save the battery ). I was "back then" really drawn to the Sensation, but it had NO 3D. I'd have almost bought the LG, but luckily was saved by HTC
I never expected it to catch on, because the people apparently see 3D only as a gimmick (sic!), and a low priority one as that..."3D? Uh, yeah, cool... but does it play Angry Birds? Show me!"...
So, lessons learned: Next time buy the phone you need... I hope my 3D stays with me a long time.

Because of the hardware inside, not the screen, or sense. Well at least for me, it was the best option when going the price to performance route.
While we're waiting for our phones, I thought I would start a thread where we could just talk without worrying about going off-topic. If you want to talk about how other phones compare to the Evo, rant about rotten fruit and the vegetables that use them, etc, than this is the place.

saw it. watch them all here every week. What I thought was funnier was the phone they were using in the Speed social media center(social garage) was the Samsung Epic 4G Touch...least thats what it looked like when R. Wood was showing off the Nascar app....Found it real interesting they didn't give him an EVOLTE to use....esp if they had a ton of signage for it...

Yes I did and yes it was everywhere. Last year they were showing off the EVO 3d to all the drivers and even the announcers had them. its also in the best buy ad this morning. I bet a lot of people go there and are pissed when its not

I've been having problems with my OG Evo for like a month now. I didn't know about the charge dock problems even though I'm always here flashing new roms. I was anxiously waiting for the new one and then all of this happened. For a while, I was seriously considering cancelling my order but then I realized that that would be a win for Apple and I could not contribute to their gain. I decided to wait patiently for my phone.
In terms of the patent I think its BS, and this is coming from a software engineer. I don't want to go deep into that discussion but working with code is a whole different ballgame.
In terms of the whole GS3 vs. EvoLTE vs. iPhone5 thing, I think both the GS3 and the EvoLTE are good phones. I don't know much about the iphone5 specs yet. What I can say is that apple products are not that unarguably better overall for them to have so much money and crazy fanboys right now.
The best apple product was the iPod by far. It revolutionized the industry. Everything else from there has come off branding. You can argue about the OG iPhone and iPad being nice too but that feels like a century ago. Like I said, everything else is marketing. Its funny people buying expensive macs just to log in to facebook and serious customers run parallel half of the time to use windows programs.
Right now, we have competition and we have android developers working their a** off to get a small share of the pie and that's why I can't cancel my order. After I read this, I was shocked by how this blind fanaticism is hurting the industry around the world. I don't wanna be a part of that. Like I said, some Apple products are great, but they are not unarguably so ahead of the curve for them to be squashing everyone that easy. My two cents...

I'm pretty sure it's all Android manufacturers that are affected. The EVO LTE was delayed at customs because of this. And besides, we've already got JB leaks for our phone.

The EVO LTE was stopped at the border because of how they handled phone numbers in various applications.
Samsung lost a lawsuit because their phones look like iPhones (and yet they still sell phones with a physical home button...morons )

Actually it's Samsung that's doing more damage as they are sort of the face of Android these days. They lose a case for copying and people think all android phones are rip offs of iPhones. They even added a single home button to the bottom after removing all capacitive buttons.

Right, well anyone can be a victim of these broad patents.
I think it's funny that Samsung owns most of the cellular market share now.
Personally, I still hope for a later reversal of that final ruling, especially in light of the recent overturn of Koh's initial injunction. I hope that reversal is somewhat a bellwether against AAPL's frivolous nonsense.
Nonetheless, it'd still be nice to have JB on my evo lte... and beating the GS3 to it would be icing on the cake. Just not at all a fan of that phone.

And if my lte gets jb before the gs3 as an ota not a leaked Rom then more power to HTC, I'm just tired of all the publicity the gs3 is getting and all the negativity the evolte is getting. The lte blows the gs3 out of the water on benchmarks, and is an all around better device

Yes anyone can be a victim of broad patents but look at how similar the latest model is, they claim lawyers made sure nothing infringed and it's the closest looking clone that Samsung has made so far.

The only relevance is the home button. The Evo is shaped more like an iPhone, so Evo is just at fault as Samsung is. This is a petty argument. The point of this thread was to point out that the Evo is supposedly getting Jellybean first so let's leave it at that.

Wtf they suppose to look like to avoid getting a lawsuit because a company is jealous they can't compare and come out with outdated software on a 1/16" bigger phone, a damn triangle with a tent at the bottom for a home screen button?? Come on now... I don't remember EVER hearing Nokia and Motorola battling it out over the way their phones looked or were configured....

My argument exactly. Everyone's at risk, but Aplle is only going after the big guys. HTC and Samsung both have a rather large, competitive, market share.

To be honest and unbiased I owned HTC phones (Mogul, TP1,TP2,Evo,Evo3D,and EvoLTE) the past several years and now I am on my first Samsung phone. I hated not having a removable battery on the LTE and the nonexistent Sprint LTE and 3G in the DFW so I bounced and picked up a GS3 on TMO. The ELTE does things better than the GS3 and the GS3 does things better than the ELTE so it is was it is, you can't really trash either phone. In the mean time HTC is losing money and marketshare while Samsung is the No. 1 smartphone manufacturer worldwide. I could care less who gets Jelly Bean first...LOL

Who cares about quadrant scores? Try thinking about real life performance.
I currently have the EVO 4G LTE and the GSIII and can tell you that they are equal in speed and performance. And honestly, out of the box, the GSIII is much snappier. The LTE is a better device to me because of the kickstand, but that may be the only reason.
