[Q] App Installation Location? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I apologize if this is the wrong forum to place this, but I couldn't find one that seemed more appropriate.
I'm using the MIUI ROM on my Defy and don't like some of the icons it selects for my applications. Core apps I know where the APK is located so changing them isn't an issue. My question is with ones I install that aren't core apps. I found the data file, but it doesn't seem "hackable" and haven't found any way around this. Am I just stuck with whatever icon the ROM thinks is best, or can I change them somehow? Thanks!

Maybe try a different icon changer? Like using launcher pro to change them instead?

Having never used MIUI ROMs myself I am not sure if this applies but on a Collective/CM/AOSP roms and using one of the alternative launchers (e.g., Nova Launcher, APEX, etc.) you can simply long-press the icon you wish yo edit, click EDIT, then click on the icon symbol and this gives you a list of actions and allows to pick from gallery, files, icon packs, etc. Again, I'm not sure if that applies but thought it may be worth trying and doesn't require fiddling with files at all. Cheers and good luck.

[Q] Rom Cooking Questions

HI guys
I seem to try a lot of roms but would like an easy optioin to go back to my preferred layout. I dont want to use a backup program as I am also learning rom cooking.
OK so what I want to do is take overcome, pack adwlauncher into it AND modify its settings (add icon theme, move front screen icons, add some widgets to the homescreen etc)
I Have been experimenting and not having much luck.
First thing i did was edit the build.prop and modify the density to my liking. Works fine.
I deleted launcher.apk from and added adwlauncher.apk to /system/app.
It boots but no launcher , I assumed it would come up with the default "select program for this action" in first book allowing me to set adwlauncher, but it does not.
So useless to me, no launcher.
How do i do this?
I also assume that there is a better place to put adw so as to allow for updating? Where are market programs stored?
ALSO
How do I change adw's settings to my liking and pre package them?
I assume I can just setup adw how I like, take the config files off my galaxy AND package them into the overcome zip somewhere. Where might they be and where might I need to put them to.
Oh one other thing, adwthemes. These come from market I'm assuming as an apk. If I just add the apk to appropriate place is that enough for adw to see them so that once my config is in place the correct icons will be used.
Thanks very much for any help guys and excuse me if these answers are easy to find, I didnt have much luck with my search terms.
Hopefully one day I will be talented enough to build my own overcome. lol
Oh, for those who dont know, overcome is a rom for our galaxy tabs, forget the references I'm after generic help
I'm not sure, but I believe that putting apps in the /system/app folder makes it more difficult to update them.
I would create a folder called 'data' in your ZIP, with the APK in it. Not sure though, never tested it Perhaps you'll have to modify the update-script too, to make it work, but hey, that's the fun of cooking
I thought so, because that is a protected system folder..
Anyway I half figured this one out. I need to push /data/com.ADWFOLDER with an update script. Re the settings. Unfortunately, I have been told this is impossible..
Can anyone elaborate?
You could possibly try renaming it launcher.apk..

[Q] Custom Icon Pack

I'm working on creating my own Launcher Icons. How can I place them in an installable pack? As they are now, I have to save the images and then custom replace each one. I'd like to be able to switch back and forth when I feel like changing my theme.
I've been searching the forums and google for some help with this, but I can't seem to find anything that truly answers my question.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
On the plus side, the icons are coming out very nicely!

Check this out, not sure if this is what you're looking for though.

Thanks! It's a start! I use ADW so maybe there's a similar process.
i can suggest you a method to make a swappable theme.
Take an unused adwtheme.apk and edit it, changing the /res/drawable-hdpi .png icons you 'd like to use
Re-zip it and resign it (or simply drag an drop in the original apk i guess)
It worked for me. I can apply the icons using the adw option in themes, selecting iconpack only. And simply swap icons by applying another theme iconpack the same way
Hope it can help.

Remove Icons from Pop-up Taskbar

I uninstalled world clock, Calender, Pen Memo and Calculator with Titanium. By doing that, they vanished from the taskbar!

I second this, let us know when you figure out how to put new apps in there.

Found this to hide taskbar in Market: TaskBar Hider.
This does work in landscape mode-ideal for games and videos etc.

To each his own, it took me a few days to get used to the task bar but eventually I came to appreciate the value of these mini applications which unlike others will run on top of most open applications. Having access to your calendar, a NotePad or a calculator without jumping fully out of another application comes in handy.

From what I've read those are special TW mini-apps written by Samsung. They have never released the specs to developers to write their own and be able to add or replace the ones already there.

Kinda pissed samsung doesn't. They seem super awesome. We did not buy the tab for their touchWiz update, but for the hardware (but the touchwhiz update does do some nice extras) but fi they would release the code it would make ALL of android even better. like if they licensed or even sold how they did the apps in the taskbar and even how they modified and added the screenshot and notification toggles (as android should have this already included as its so handy).
Did anybody find a way to replace apps? Maybe renaming apps like the stock apps and the taskbar will fetch their links and icons thinking they are stock?
Until someone figures out how to modify the stock pop-up tray, there is a way to add a second pop-up task bar using an app called "Wizz Bar". I think that the Tab has to be rooted to run this app. It works quite well.

I think you'll find the apps are specifically made to address some proprietary Samsung addition to the taskbar framework which, as you mentioned, Samsung don't release the source to.
Renaming the apk won't do anything, they're just programs that run. You could rename all your system apps to kang1.apk, kang2.apk, etc and you'd probably notice no difference.
Of all the irritating rubbish in TouchWiz, they come up with one potentially useful feature but don't give us the source to extend it. Ironically frustrating.

Possible to create my own selectable screen layouts?

I tried to make the Subject Title as descriptive as possible, but am unsure how to explain what I mean in ~10 words.
Here is a post where I show my layout: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20336122#post20336122
I use Launcher Pro Plus, Desktop Visualizer, MultiPicture Live Wallpaper, and Folder Organizer to create my 7 screens w/ different wallpapers, links, and widgets on each page.
What I would like to do is be able to click a button/link, or go into an app and select a "pre-packaged" 3, 5, or 7 page layout that already has all the wallpapers, links, widgets, etc in place, and it all just loads up instantly.
I have searched, but cant figure out a search string that finds me results. Anyone know of a way to do this? If I haven't been clear enough, let me know and I'll try to clarify what I want.
Thanks!
so you want the option to click on an icon, and move to a different homescreen right?
do you want to be able to share this or somthing as if so
if you are using adw
go into settingfs of adw and click backup
go into my files or whatever on sdcard then go down to two files called adw.... cant remeber what theyr called but start with adw
if somone puts your files in same place on there tab and then restore from backup they should get your layouts

No. Take my current "setup" - 7 pages using Launcher Pro, 7 walls w/ multipicture live, plus links, icons, and widgets... I want to create completely different "setups" different page counts, different wallapers, different links, different widgets, etc, and be able to load up a completely different layout, AND be able to switch back to the previous.
As I currently understand it, I can create a layout, as explained (and exemplified in the link I provided above) - but if I want to CHANGE it to something different - different page count, different wallpapers, different icons, widgets, links, etc... then I LOSE my current setup/layout as displayed in the link above. I don't want to LOSE it, but rather SAVE it so I can LOAD it back up.
But no, I'm not talking about how to do "hubs".

I don't mind sharing them, but it's not a priority as what I create will definitely be very unique to me, my needs, and more importantly, the apps I've purchased and use.
I'm a photographer and use my tab for business situations, but it's 80+% used for personal use. So I want to have my 7page layout for daily personal use, then quickly switch to maybe a 2 page layout that only accesses my portfolio and web for when I hand the tab over to a client to browse. I want to have a fun layout for myself but be able to switch over to a more professional/limited layout very quickly.
Hope that all makes sense. Thanks.

Ok, so I'm not sure about Launcher Pro, but as Brobot stated this is possible with ADWex. In ADWex you simply backup your ADW settings and your desktop configuration. This will place 2 files in your /sdcard folder (adw_ex_launcher.db & adw_ex_settings.xml). Then it would just be a matter of saving them somewhere else (their own folder perhaps). When you wanted to switch "layouts" just move the files into your sdcard directory and restore them. A warning though, this is certainly not a perfect solution. This does not really work well with certain widgets like Desktop Visualizer and Minimalistic Text. Which is why I rarely use Desktop Visualizer anymore and instead incorporate the graphic/icon/whatever into the wallpaper and then place invisible icons over them. Seems to run a whole lot smoother in my opinion too.
Sounds like you want different user profiles.
I just read about this, you might want to try it out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1475890
SwitchMe lets you log into separate user profiles with completely custom setups for each user.
Oh, here's the market link: https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.switchme
Thanks union, but sounds very clunky and not too quick of a process.

This sounds right. I'll check that out, thanks. I remember on my HTC Hero I was able to create different profiles and switch back and forth, but 4 Android handsets and a tab later, I forgot about that. Maybe it was a feature of Sense. Thanks for the heads up on that app.

[Resolved] [Q] Non-transparent icons in ADW?

Hey, themers!
I've been having an odd problem recently with my ADW. Before I state my question, here are my device/version details:
ADW.Launcher version: 1.3.3.9
Device: Rooted Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight
Android version: 2.1 Eclair
Now, with that out of the way, here's my issue. I like changing my homescreen frequently; using new icons, new wallpaper, new widgets, etc. I've recently been enjoying vanessaem's LipseUI and Lucent Remix icons, as well as King Rollo's 7null icons. Thing is, I've been having to use Deskto VisualizeR (DVR) to get the icons to display correctly, mainly because 1) Android 2.1 doesn't support 97% of icon pack apps, so I have to buy them on one device, install them, copy the .apk out of /data/app, and decompile the .apk so I can use the icon .pngs on my Nook, and 2) When I do [Menu > Add > Custom shortcut > [tap on icon area] > Select and crop picture] in ADW, the transparency in the image I choose, whatever file extension it is, always displays as plain black (which, of course, ruins circular and King Rollo-style icons).
So, my question is: how can I force ADW to display the correct transparency in icons, and not display it as black?
Thanks ahead of time for any input!
Regards,
Nookie
P.S. One thing I've tried is taking one of david1171's Minimalist icon packs (his Minimalist and Minimalist_Black packs are the only icon pack .apks I've ever been able to actually install on my Nook), decompiling it, taking out all of the actual icon pack icons, pasting in all of, for example, the LipseUI icons, recompiling, and attempting to reinstall the .apk, but I always have gotten a parse error, most likely because I don't know how to resign the .apk after recompiling it. Can anyone help me with this option?
P.P.S. Also, please don't recommend I update my Android version - fact is, on my device, 2.1 is the highest Android version to which any devs have ever gotten it.
*cough*
@Ticklefish, perhaps?

Rules are one bump per day max. I would try not to make a habit out of it though IMO. Been a long time since I used 2.1 or adw. Sorry.

He's ok. It's one bump per 24hrs. and I think he's done that.
Anyway, I wish I could help. I'm unable to replicate the issue nor have I used ADW Launcher regularly in quite a long time. Have you tried using another launcher?
I know this may not be what you want to hear, or should I say see, but the fact of the matter is, many icon packs and perhaps ADW may not be fully compatible with Android 2.1. Some features like how things are displayed on the screen and general functionality have changed greatly since Android 2.1.
@rkucheran and @vanessaem, thank you both for your input. I am fully aware of all that you stated, Ms. V, but thanks for ensuring that.
I guess I'll have to do some .apk hacking.

SUMMON ME AND I APPEAR!!
Ahem...
Anyway...
I've never used ADW, so I can't give you any launcher-specific advice. My very first Android was on Eclair (that seems so long ago now) and it could run GO Launcher EX...which does cope with transparent icons. Maybe it's worth trying a different launcher?

I have a theming tool called Tickle My Android, which is very useful for this sort of thing. Check it out, it might help!

Thank you so much for your kind and insightful input - I'm testing GO Launcher EX right now, to see if it lives up to ADW's standards, and then after that I'll give Tickle My Android a go (it looks awesome!).
Thanks again!
EDIT - After running GO for several hours, I've decided to uninstall it. It takes up too much memory, too much RAM, and isn't as customizable as ADW (which I've had for years).
Time to try TMA!
@rkucheran @vanessaem @Ticklefish
I have solved my problem! :highfive:
By installing QuickPic, using ADW's "Select picture" function (versus the "Select and crop picture" function) and selecting QuickPic as the image chooser, I can now set my app icons correctly, with transparency and everything!
Thank you all for your help, and lastly, I'd like to ask Ms. V to close this thread. :good:

Nookie
Excellent...I'm glad everything worked out for you.
