[Q] can i update via kies while i am rooted - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,i am connecting my gs2 via kies and its says there is available firmaware,i am already rooted with original kernel, can i update?or i need update again with odin?and if its possible to update via kies what will happend?i will loss my root?
thank u

As long as you are on Stock firmware, root/un root doesn't matter. Do the update. Yes you will loss root after flashing the new firmware, so you need to re root.

and something else.i think my phone was sim locked from 3uk company,if i update and lose root i will be sim locked again?or no?

Not 100% sure but you may unroot after updating. someone can confirm.
i have locked bootloader, so i don't know if there are problems with unlocked, but my neo was rooted on .42 and stay rooted after .62 ota update.
If you unlocked your bootloader via se official way then no you will brick your phone with a fota update, if you unlocked with setool2 paid for method then you should be fine, but i'm not sure about the setool1 method.
Why not flash with flashtool ?
NO WAY DON´T DO THAT YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!
Use wotanserver or other way.

thanx for that info! Not really thinking of updating but dat notification kinda annoying..
any idea of removing/deleting that notification without moving to .62?
one more question... if i flash with flashtool the .62 firmware, will my bootloader still be unlocked?
Sure it will be unlocked.
The bootloader as nothing to do with the firmware.
To root you must to flash rootxperia.zip through recovery, it´s the easy way.
Search in the foruns and you will find the thread.

uninstall UpdateCenter.apk with titanium backup, or search for it with root explorer or any other explorer with root access.

I have a Neo bought unlocked with 2.3.3, I made OTA update and I briked my phone. After restore, first I flashed with a new 2.3.3 and after used x10 flash tool, I rooted with DoomLoRD_v4_ROOT. I received that is a new software update available, I was affraid to do it by OTA and I done with pc software update from SE. After update I still have superuser app but my neo is not rooted.
How can I root it again without any flashes or downgrade. Is out there any app working? I tried with Gingerbreak, SoperOneClick v2.3.3 and DoomLoRD_v4_ROOT, but no result.

How is you bootloader unlocked? Official way, s1tool or setool2?
And you can't root .62 without downgrading first to .42. But I guess that trick only works for bootloaders unlocked NOT BY OFFICIAL way, but still not sure, that's why I'm asking you.

Can't update over the air

Can't install update for my phone, via OTA. Anyone knows what's the problem? I flash it 58 fw and I root it, is it because of the root?

Dial *#*#7378423#*#* then click service info>configuration check rooting status. If it says bootloader unlocked : yes then it's unlocked. If bootloader unlock allowed: yes then it's locked.
It says bootloader allowed: yes
So I guess is Locked. Why can't I update?

Did you install CWM or change ANY stuff on /system partition? Like MODs or anything like that? Because i think this kind of stuff can make the OTA fail.

Yes, I install CWM, is that bad? Because I don't think I could install it after updating the system... :/

Please read my current post on such a stupid upgrade via PC Companion, flashed it back into .58, rooted again, installed ROM Manager, prior to upgrade it to .62 on the air... or you may simply cross your arms and wait for a few days to let SE engineers to fix that OTA bug
Get a "Generic US .58" firmware... you can use wotanserver... OTA update should be available with that.
Rooting the phone won't affect anything. So that's not the reason, it's the firmware.
OTA Update IS available for me, the problem is it can't install the update, anyway, I decided to stay with .58 fw version right now, I mean I don't have any problems at all using this version and I already deleted some system apps, so I think I'll wait for the ICS update.

I can't update by OTA to .62... at the end, the final step I guess, my handset stops and reboots normally, and a message appear on status bar: can't install.
Is a .377 (oooollldddd) st15a with root (by zergrush method), locked bootloader.
All stock, just with root.
So I decide to wait a custom ROM, the Mini ST15a/i Clean 'n' Tweaked, updated, by serajr.
Same here .... I am running a stock .58 fw
I have rooted the phone long ago but never unlocked the bootloader or installed the CWM.
Nonetheless, i start the update to .62 fw but the final step just says that is not possible ton install the update.
Any idea?
The only thing i did that MAY AFFECT the ota update is that i used titanium backup to integrate some app into the rom system and to delete some sony bloatware. This could really be the problem?

No it is not, and your friend is wrong. You can update to JellyBean any time you want, and YOU CHOOSE if you want to keep your phone rooted or not.
If you root, you can update to jellyBean using MobileOdin (available in the PlayStore), and choose to keep root or not.
You can also update using the PC version of Odin3, but that way it will NOT keep root.
So, sumarize, you can do anything want, rooted or not, upgraded or not!!!
Only problem is that OTA update may well fail on a rooted phone .

Why wait on OTA if you can do it using MobileOdin (to retain root) or Odin3 ?
I never had an OTA upgrade and yet I had all upgrades before everyone else.
Besides, you wrote "may", which is the proper word: when rooting and upgrading are done correctly, your binary counter is ZERO and the ROM is marked as official, so any OTA would work if I had patience to wait.
Yep, you can't update via Kies. But Kies sucks anyway so Odin is your no.1 choice

Some SIM unlock methods do not survive the upgrade to JB. Not knowing the method, it is impossible to answer.
You can always use Galaxsim unlock (search XDA for free) to unlock the SIM once upgraded. It needs root though, but its free.

I would recommend upgrading to the very latest version for your region, yes. You need to get off ICS ASAP really.
If you're making a big leap to say, 4.1.2 (recommended) then you may be best preparing to do a factory reset. This of course wipes the internal SD card too. So just backup what you can before flashing a ROM. Even though you may not need to reset, it is best practice due to settings incompatabilities.
Then, IF you have become sim locked, you can quickly root using cf-auto root, run GalaxSim unlock and unroot again (using super use app).

I was rooted with locked bootloader on an older version of the firmware, having used the EasyRootTool v12.2. I was using the paid version of SuperSU and had selected Survival Mode. I just upgraded to 4.4.4 (resigned to no more root) but much to my surprise I still had root after the upgrade. :good::laugh::good:
