[Q] which rom has a working gps? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA,
I'm looking for a rom with reliable gps.
I've used CM7 and Trigger and they both give me the same problems (probably cuz trigger is based off cm7).
I know people using CM7 are having issues getting a lock with the GPS but for me, my gps doesn't even try. for example, when i turn on my maps/navigation/gps test app, the blinking gps icon doesn't even show up. I can only get it to appear if i restart my phone and that's only the first time i run an app that uses gps. once it closes and i open an app to use gps again, nothing.
I'm going on a trip this weekend and I think it would be handy to have.
So my questions are.
1. If you're using cm7 or trigger, are you having the same experience? I assume people do get the icon in the notification bar but just can't lock satellites.
2. If your gps works, which rom are you using?
3. If you got your gps to work on cm7 or trigger, how did you do it? i think i've tried all the "working" ones from this forum. but i could be wrong/doing it wrong.
Thanks guys!
ps. I've done the hardware gps "fix" if that matters at all.

I am running MIUI revamped and managed to get it to work.
I think that some of the gps config tweaks were included in the 1.8.5 build.
I'm not entirely sure how (I tried a lot of the fixes), but right now it is locking, and can relock. I ran it this morning on my way to work and again on my way home.
Here's what I remember doing:
Replaced AngryGPS with AngryGPSMod (Then executed the apk in root explorer to install it into the apps list)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172428
Flashed the CM7 GPS fix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199613
Flashed the regional gps data file (I'm in Oklahoma, so mid-south states)
I don't remember where the thread was, you'll need to search for it.
Make sure to use the google supl server settings. You can find them in various ROM threads.
An alternate supl server is the nokia one (worked well for me in Froyo)
Settings are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912777&highlight=nokia+gps+settings
[I started with these settings and then changed to the google supl settings, which are working now.]
Use GPS Test to see if it locks onto the birds.
Good Luck

go back to 2.2 they have reliable gps.

Agreed. People keep claiming GB has GPS working reliably, but it doesn't. Even the devs who engineered the current GPS fixes admit they are "half-assed". No slight to the devs, but until Samsung mans up and releases GB for the Vibrant (which they won't because TMO hates us), it's not going to get better. Between this and the battery life, GB is just a toy. Go back to 2.2 like I did.

ODIN to JFD = No - Maybe - Yes depending on who you ask
Custom 2.2 / stock 2.2 = Yes
CM7/MIUI/Trigger = Maybe, not reliable.
If on 2.2 you have issues, the solution posted by digitaltoddy always works for me.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to try some of the things HeavyA suggested. In case it doesn't work, can you suggest a good rom that runs on 2.2? Thanks again!

The best froyo roms I tried were trigger and project v.
As for my suggestions, the regional GPS flashables are from the HD2 forum.

5. 3d gallery is more a 1 fps slide show.
6. when in gallery and i switch the phone sideways, it shows 6 images of the gallery distorted (unusable)
I did a fresh rom install, and still these problems persist.
cleared cache and all.
common problems or is it just this phone....
I have all the same issues with the exception of not being able to lock it. Change the camera from autofocus to touch focus, and get rid of the 3d gallery, Eris cannot handle it sadly.

I just found the gps fix here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=476754&d=1293732152
You may like the XTRsense ROM,
I've never tried it myself though

+1 xtrSENSE, IMHO you won't find a better 2.1 ROM, or if you want stock but without sense home itself, xtrROM. Both excellent.
xtrsense is really the smoothest Ive used too.
i wonder if kaosfroyo got its CM updated and what not if it would work better? I know its been on the back burner for some time.

I have issues with the browser closing after about 3 seconds after updating to Kaosfroyo v39. I noticed your update link to fix the GPS and browser, but that link is not working. Any other insight on fixing this? Many thanks! Carl
Hmm. I just clicked on the link and it downloaded the gps fix for me instantly, it won't actually open a page as its a direct download. Did you try accessing the link with your phone or comp? Try the phone, and while it may be a pain in the ass, use an alternate browser temporarily for the link such as Dolphin Mini.
PM me if you are still having problems and I will do my best to help.

It's pretty simple and essentially the same process that you used to install KF. You are already rooted, so you now need to download the xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726467
Copy that zip file to your SD card and then use the following procedure:
- shut down the phone
- restart in recovery by holding down VolUp while you start the phone until you see the Amon_RA recovery screen
- go to the Backup/Restore menu
- Choose Nandroid backup
- When that is done, press VolDn to return to the main menu
- Go to the Wipe menu
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Wipe Dalvik cache
- Press VolDn to go back to the main menu
- Choose Flash a zip from SD card
- Choose the xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip file
- restart the phone
I had kaosfroyo v39 for only a few minutes before i flashed a cyanogenmod7 gingerbread rom which made me much happier

I flip back and forth between xtrSENSE and one or two of the GB ROMs weekly; I, like many others, have been running the GB ROMs for many months now. They are very stable and much, much better than KF at this point.
I find it hard to find speed differences between ROMs after things have been running for a while. About the only difference I see is battery life - the GB ROMs are more efficient than xtrROM and xtrSENSE, all things being equal, on my phone. xtrSENSE is excellent, all of the GB ROMs are great and well-supported at this time. Sometimes there are updates to the GB ROMs that may break some functionality but they are always fixed by the next update - just read the comments in those threads to see and you can always download and flash an older version if you need something to work. You cannot go wrong with either choice.
well so far nearly 24hrs with the xtrsense rom and loving the speed and smoothness so far. there are a few things i liked to have kept from the froyo rom to this one but i'd rather have the smoothness and quickness than the few things i liked more from the froyo rom. still re-learning everything tho

Speedtest.net or equivalent

So this is odd. Speedtest.net wont show up in the market, None of the browsers I have installed will even go to their website and if I use my browser to go to the Android market and try to download the app it just tells me it will be downloaded in a minute or something like that.
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on why I cant use speedtest.net app on my Nook and/or suggest an alternative.
Thanks in advance.
Using CM7 RC4 download ok but fc
What rom are you using? I just got it to download using CM7, but can't actually run a speed test as it fc's before it finishes downloading the server list.
I never tried this before as I can just go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and use the flash based speed test. Assuming you're on Froyo or better that's probably the easiest thing to do.
Okay not to post like mad, but got curious and tried a few others:
- Speedtest by Xtreme Labs seems to work well.
- cnlab Spedtest fc's immediately upon opening.
- BenchBee SpeedTest only has a test server in Korea, so if you're anywhere other than Korea it's not gonna be a good representation of your actual speed.
Hope that helps you.
I should have stated im using Nookie Froyo Sorry. Ill give Xtreme Labs a shot and see how that does but then again maybe not. I think im going to flash CM7 tonight anyways and then ill play around.
I was using nookie froyo and CM7 is pretty darned nice. Things seem to work a bit better since I switched, epecially WiFi. I kept having problems when the nook would come out of sleep and the WiFi took forever to connect, that went away with CM7.
Thats good to know. I havent flashed yet like I planned but I will soon. I wonder if speedtest works on cm7?
FC on start = It trying to init GPS
There is an app for faking your location: http://www.appbrain.com/app/fake-gps-location/com.lexa.fakegps
I've also found that just turning on the TetherGPS client (not bothering with the server at all) will also work.
Several other apps also do this by the way.. Waze is one, Backcountry Navigator runs but will bomb if you try to turn on the GPS in the app, etc.
That makes sense. I didn't even think about that it was trying to find my location.
Fake GPS is exactly what I needed. Thanks!

CM7 Thunderbolt Help Thread

I'll preface with this:
1. I am not a dev.
2. I don't intend to take credit away from any of the CM7 devs.
3. I don't intend to take credit for any of the solutions posted here.
I like to keep up with the main thread, but it has become a little unruly, with the same questions being asked and answered repeatedly. I was thinking we could keep this thread as something of a troubleshooting thread, with known problems and solutions in the OP, in an attempt to keep the main CM7 thread (here) a bit more organized for dev related stuff.
Mods, if this thread is in the wrong forum or inappropriate, feel free to deal with it accordingly.
OK:

CM7 for Thunderbolt
Current Version: RC1.4 (MR2/2.5 Radio Only)
Merged to Mainline: No
Wipe Required: No if upgrading from RC1.2 or RC1.3 (although if you are having ANY problems, first troubleshooting step is to reinstall following a complete wipe). Yes if you are coming from ANY OTHER PREVIOUS VERSION OR ROM
Problems With Known Fixes
Problem:
I just installed CM7, where is the Market?!
Solution:
Not a problem, you just have to install gapps.
- Easiest way is to download and install through ROM Manager: Rom Manager -> Download ROM -> Google Apps.
- Alternatively, you can download and install manually. Link. Flash using Recovery.
Problem:
GPS is not getting a fix
Solution:
1. Be sure that you are on RC1.2, and that you did a full wipe prior to installing.
2. Backup CM7 in Clockwork Recovery.
3. Do a full wipe.
4. Flash a Sense based ROM, such as BAMF.
5. Boot into the Sense based ROM that you flashed in Step 4, and obtain a GPS fix.
6. While your GPS is locked, reboot to recovery. (Hold Power -> Reboot to Recovery)
7. Do a full wipe.
8. Restore the CM7 backup you made in step 1.
9. Boot into CM7. Your GPS should now be working.
Problem:
Inaccurate signal bars/I only have two bars on LTE
Solution:
FIXED ON RC1.3
Problem:
Non-GPS geolocation is (very) inaccurate

wraithdu said:
The inaccurate non-GPS location can be fixed by turning on WiFi (does not need to be connected, just ON). Obviously a temporary fix, but works for me - I can get location now in Beautiful Widgets, SiMi Clock, The Weather Channel, and the browser. I increased my WiFi scan interval to 3 minutes to try and help battery. But it beats getting the weather for Guam.

Problem:
Unlock lag and/or no backlit softkeys
Solution:
Turn off auto brightness, should take care of both of these issues. (thanks to Mustang302LX)
Problems With Fixes of Questionable Effectiveness
Problem:
Problems with in-browser flash
Solution:
chmod 000 /data/data/com.android.browser/app_plugins/com.adobe.flashplayer/.macromedia/Flash_Player/config.data
Varying reports of this working/not working
Problem:
Low volume
Solution:
Since perception of volume is subjective, it's difficult to say whether or not this is a true problem, and whether or not it's been fixed. Slayher has stated that it's been fixed since one of the earlier releases. Another possible solution is here (credit to utkanos), which has been used with varying results - again, volume perception is subjective.
Problem:
Included wireless tethering not working
Solution:
From what I've seen, you will be able to connect to the wireless network, but you will not be able to obtain an IP address. I have found that forcing an IP release/renew upon connecting generally takes care of this problem. On Windows, this can be done with the following:
1. Start -> Run -> "cmd"
2. ipconfig /release
3. ipconfig /renew
Problems Without Known Fixes
Problem:
Streaming audio over bluetooth is choppy

OK, post problems (and fixes, if there are any) and I'll do my best to keep the OP updated in an attempt to keep the main dev thread more organized. When posting an issue, please include:
CM7 version
Kernel
Radio
Wipe
all aosp roms including gingerbread roms reads data strength instead of cellar radio strength. that's why it appears to have less bars. if you search there are mods i believe to give you the appearance of higher signal strength on the forums here.
cm7 and Netflix issues
I believe this is a CM7 issue, as it only happens with is rom and previous versions but I'm not sure if its FPS or just choppiness but Id like to get this fixed other fixes like chmod 000 have not worked.
On a different note I would like to thank everyone involved with CM7 its by far the best ROM.

This is also true for embedded flash videos. If I use the chmod 000 it skips if I go above 360 but it works. Older versions don't let me go above 360 because the video menu, it just closes whenever I open it.
The one issue that bugs me the most about this ROM is that it does not find my location correctly. Not talking about GPS because that works perfectly, but how I'm found through the network does not work. Google Maps works perfectly at finding my location but apps like fancy widget and even google.com locate me in different places.
I live in Buffalo, NY but my phone insists I move frequently around the world. First I'm in Fort Wayne, IN, then Houston, TX, then Nairobi, Kenya, and sometimes in Lawndale, CA.
Something's wrong and no one seems to have a fix that'll work for me. I'm assuming that's cause no one cares about it because its so miniscule.
Tried different radios and GPS status but nothing has worked.
Fix? Slayher?
I am absolutely loving this rom, I flashed it on my girls Droid x and instantly had to have it on my tbolt. GPS works great, more than great, and no other issues except two things.
First, when streaming Pandora or slacker through bt the skip like crazy, but when played through the phones speaker they're fine. No big deal.
Secondly I must be doing something wrong because my battery life is terrible. I have an extended battery that the phone ate through in 8 hours moderate use. And my stock battery is dropping about 30% an hour...
I'm not a noob with screen time out to 10 mins and brightness all the way up, so its got to have something to do with my CPU settings. I'm using set CPU to over clock to 1450. Tried different goveners. I assume there's different kernels out there I'm gonna have to try out, what kernel is included? Running mr2 ota

In any case, easiest solution would be to install GAPPS from ROM Manager.

Try a full wipe before installing 1.2. I believe that was recommended by slayher.
Is it only your home wifi, or are you having trouble with all wifi connectivity?

[FIX] Navigation Force Closes on ERIS Gingerbread ROMS

PLEASE NOTE: This patch addresses application force closes on newer google maps applications (5.5-5.7) running on gingerbread-based ROMs for the ERIS. This does not address reboots/restarts (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1157099 for progress on this other problem)
After extensive testing on CondemnedCM7 V15, I believe that the Navigation force closes many of us experience on the newest maps version is fixable (at least on Condemned's ROM; GSB users report that problems still remain) by rolling back google maps framework files to a version used for Android 2.2 ROMS. I have been testing since last week and have not had a single navigation force close. My longest test was 1 hour 10 mins with multiple reroutes and no force close. One known issue, Map application (not navigation) will unexpectedly close (that is, will not offer a force close but will shut down) randomly while using the search box. I have not been able to consistently reproduce this
I am attaching two zip files flashable from AmonRa Recovery if you would like to try the fix. The first replaces the current maps framework with the froyo framework. The second rolls back the change to the latest gingerbread framework.
If you are using maps 5.2 which CS included in the system apps for v15 and are happy with the result, then you do not need to flash this file. If you would like to use the newest maps app (5.7), you may wish to try this.
In theory, this fix would work on an AOSP or Cyanogen gingerbread ROM, so if folks on other devices are having similar problems, they may want to try.
Good luck everyone!
NOTE: this is repeated from CondemnedSoul's CM7 thread. The attachments can be found there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15978440&postcount=535

Have to go get it myself.
klob, will upgrading to 5.8 overwrite the fix files, or should I have run the unfix before upgrading?
Either way all I did was upgrade and so far Nav has been running for 40 minutes. Not driving anywhere, just have Nav running while I'm in the house.
Upgrading maps app will not affect the fix, so if you want to find out if it works with stock gapps, you'll need to flash the unfix. Also, bftb0 on the gsb thread has demonstrated that desktop navigation is not a good test for force closes. I'd get it on the road to be sure.

I got to use Google Nav today and it wasn't the best. After 5 minutes it went shut off, just shut off and phone went to sleep. Opened Nav back up and after 14 minutes the map locked, never updated/moved, tough screen commands still came up along with menu but nothing worked. Rebooted and applied the fix that klobkelosh posted earlier and it didn't change anything, screen keeps freezing. This is all after full wipe and flashing latest CS v16 vanilla with 5.8 Maps.

Odd. I just full wipe installed ccm16sth with 5.8 maps and navigation worked fine. One thing I did was disable text to speech, maybe that's the culprit? You can disable by renaming system/lib/libtts.so.

GPS files the culprit?
Not sure if this will help but today running GSB 3.8 ODEX with Maps 5.8 (no framework mods.) my phone completely restarted in the middle of a walk. The thing is that I was not using Maps nor Nav. I WAS using TrackerBooster, an app that uses GPS to measure my walking distances. So maybe this is more related to GPS files than it is to Maps or Nav. As you can tell I am not a developer, so this may be all one and the same. Just thought posting it might lend a clue. Thanks for all you guys are doing to figure this out!

I tried Telenav with the same force close issue too

Something I noticed... making me wonder if it's memory allocation issue... after a reboot, going right into Nav, it still force closes but not until 30+ minutes,
If I haven't rebooted in a while and have been running other apps like, gmail, exchange, facebook, and the going driving with NAV the reboot happens right away

[Q] 407 Official - GPS Issues?

Hi,
After limited success with the custom GB roms, I've taken the plunge and installed the official Korean 407 rom. So far no problems, other than the occasional random reboot and the clock drift. Can live with the odd reboot as long as it's rare, and clocksync looks after the time.
Using Navigation though, I am finding that GPS drops out sometimes, and only by exiting and restarting Navigation does it pick it up (instantly). Anybody else had this? Any fixes floating around that might help?
Thanks in advance

I had issues with GPS on 407, especially getting it to start. I found if I toggled Bluetooth it seemed to sort out the connection, but it was flakey. The Bluetooth was unreliable too, as well as wifi and 3g - which is why I am now on CM7 - which is way, way better than stock - I was on 407 for over a month and I never much liked the experience!
CM7 is not perfect, the battery takes a bashing but it is way more reliable. If you go to cm7 then you'll need to edit the GPS.conf file in the /system/etc folder to put in a server in a more appropriate location, unless you are in Korea!

Disregard not sure what the heck I was thinking......
Well battery life is what I'm really looking for here, otherwise I'd stick with 354. Overall I do like the ROM though, nice and snappy. Need to be able to rely on Maps and Nav though.
