[Q] Successful root but no tethering - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Followed instructions here and rooted phone with no problems.
Have the superuser app installed, and have installed other apps requiring superuser permissions to make sure that it was working and it is.
But when I go to enable Mobile Hotspot, I get a "validating account" (or something along those lines) in the notification bar, and after a few (20 or so) seconds I get an "account not set up for mobile hot spot" notification...
Basically the only reason I rooted my phone was to tether/use mobile hotspot. Please advise.

In Superuser delete the entry for this app and then try again. I've had a couple instances were older versions of Superuser listed an app as being authorized but it didn't have root access.

The app does not even show up in superuser

I downloaded and installed the latest version of wifi tether and it seems to be working.
But is this app required to tether? Just curious as to whether or not the built in android setting of hotspot or tethering should be working with this root.

I'm personally not too sure but I use Wifi Tether as well. It's always worked for me with no troubles so I've never tried anything different.

This app FTW!!!!

Did you edit the entitlement check in the provider settings? You have to do that first to use the built in mobile hotspot app.

Spectre51 is correct.
Rooting does NOT automatically enable the builtin hotspot. You must remove the entitlement check or use a third party tethering app like Android WiFi Tether or Barnacle.

[Q] Wireless Tethering "No Access Control!" error message

Finally took the plunge and rooted on GB. Downloaded wireless tethering app and installing it, upon opening app I get error message "No Access Control! Sorry, but your kernel does not have all necessary features for the Access Control feature of this application. Access control will be disabled". I uninstalled and reinstall, rebooted my phone each time and still same message. Anyone have this problem? Thanks,
Access Control
I think you would have to be using a kernel that has Netfilter fully enabled. It should still let you tether you just can't control who has access to your network (without using WEP or WPA encryption)
Assume you are using WiFi tether? I get same message.
Barnacle works fine for me in 4.5.91.
Beamed from WinBorg 4G via XDA Premium
I'm having the same issue, and I think it's because I upgraded to a ROM (DarkSide 3.1) using system software 4.5.133 instead of the old 4.5.91 (Darkside 1.5 had this, worked fine).
Did you guys read the FAQ?
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/FAQ
"Why does the "access-control"-feature not work or is disabled.
If the kernel-feature "CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MAC" is missing the "access control"-feature will not work correctly (you will see a "failed"-status in "Show log" for "Enabling access control")."

I tried that too... still an alternative, but I am losing WPA encryption for WEP+MAC address control list. I am using Barnacle at the moment w/ WEP+MAC address control. It's not like I use tether a lot anyways, it's just when I need to for my iPad or laptop.

[Q] Enabling hotspot on att atrix 4g

Hi there,
I've an unlocked att atrix 4g which I use in India. I'm trying to enable the Mobile hotspot app in order to get Internet on my macbook.
When I try to enable the Mobile Hotspot button in this app, I get "account not setup for Mobile Hotspot", and in the notification bar I get "to enable go to att.com/wireless..." When I go to that site they ask me for my Mobile no. and password, which I don't have, because I'm not using the phone in the States.
Any suggestions how to get it enabled?
Thanks.
You can try the barnacle wifi tether app. Google it. Or Pdanet. Or the hotspot enabler in cm7.

Thanks, but these apps are removed from the Market, and I still don't have the CM7 on my phone.

Simple solution is to just flash a ROM with the entitlement check disabled. Such as any of the newer gingerbread-based ROMS. Or just disable the entitlement check yourself. Get SQLite or another program, it only takes a second or two and following some simple directions. I had to do it once and it was a snap. Good luck, and happy flashing.

Bhayankar-if the phone is unlocked then you can find barnacle online and install it. thats what im currently using.
You could also use the airplane mode + wifi, go I to the market and download barnacle

[Q] wifi hotspot tethering not working on unlocked i777

Hi, so I'm currently using an unlocked Samsung i777 outside the US. I'm loving this phone except for the fact that wifi tethering is not working. Every time I try to enable it, it says mobile data not available or invalid sim.
I can use my sim's 3G/HSDPA connecton just fine and my sim has a data plan and I can even use tethering on other mobile phones so I'm assuming that AT&T locked down the wifi tethering or something. How can I make it work preferably without rooting since I managed to unlock this ohome without root?
If I do need to root, well what are the apps that I need to make wifi hotspot work? Thanks.

You need to root, and you actually need to REMOVE an app (TetheringManager2.apk) to make it work.
It's AT&T's bigbrotherware
I hope you're using a local Sim and not planning on tethering while roaming, that would be a heart attack inducing bill waiting for you when you come home!!

I have same problem. But i can not find app TetheringManager2.ark in system/app. Can you tell what i should do? Thanks.
cannot tether after rooting and renamed TetheringManager2.apk
the file is there... i am in the same boat as you are. i bought an used i777.
you need to root the phone first, personally, i used Root Manager and located the file and renamed it (instead of deleting it)
BUT.. i still cannot tether :-( still getting the mobile data is not available or invalid SIM.
can anyone offer some insight to this issue ?
---------- Post added at 01:38 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:23 AM ----------
i tried to rename the file to something else, but did not get tethering to work.
i was mad and DELETED the file i renamed altogether and u know what - tethering works !
so i guess you will have to root the phone, DELETE the file, then you can get tethering to work.
have fun.
In the op it states she does not have root. Therefor what she wants to do is not possible. U need root to access the file she needs to remove.

UCLE5 remove the tetheringmanager.apk,is not work,open the wifi hostpot,setting is FC,why?
remove tether provisional app wifi hotspot still do not work EDIT:hotspot now work
hello everyone,
as the title shows I have remove the tether provision app with super manager as I can't find the tethering manager apk stated on this thread. Maybe it is on the stock GB rom I'am running stock ICS rom rooted and running on latest siyah kernel. When I tried to open wifi hotspot it just sits there unresponsive for several seconds then says "settings application stop working". I am on vacation here in the Philippines and using the local sim cards available here I have data on my phone but I can't share it on my other devices as the wifi hotspot is not functioning. I have searched several sites and install several root tethering apps to no avail. Any guide or help is greatly appreciated. Thnx
edit: I have now a functional wifi hotspot. I have downloaded FoxFi App from the market and it works. I have installed uninstalled reinstalled this app several times before but hangs and force closes upon activating the wifi hotspot. I have uninstalled the tether provision app on the root folder with Root Uninstaller as stated above. I don't know if it helps but when reinstalling the FoxFi App again, wifi hotspot on my phone now works. Though I just want to share as me myself badly needed this as my phone is not that big enough on surfing the net. Activating the phones native wifi hotspot is pretty sweet though.
2nd Edit: Though I just want to make it simple and share for everyone to know how do I make my wifi hotstpot work on stock at&t ics rom. This is a very simple step to make and works only if you are rooted. I am not responsible if you do something wrong with your phone. This do works for me..This is a guideline only for anyone wanting to have a wifi hotspot tethering on their phone as in my case running on stock at&t ics.
1. Download and install Unistaller Root app (or any root file manager app) and FoxFi tethering app ( other app may also work) from the google play market.
2. Open Uninstaller Root App and allow it SU permission then open system apps.
3. Navigate thru it and uninstall tethering provision apk.
4. Open FoxFi Tethering app , wifi hotspot should now work. Enjoy..... Do not use the native wifi hotspot from your phone as it will not work.
FYI: As in my case FoxFi will not work if you still have the Tethering Provision Apk in your phone it will just hang and forced closes when opening the app.
Hope anybody running Stock ICS will find this useful. Have a Great day....
How can I grant "SU" permission to the app?
My phone is not rooted but unlocked.
I am deadly in need of tethering. Please help me out. Thanks.

You must be rooted to obtain su permission. Also, if your signature is correct, you are in the wrong forum. This is the forum for Galaxy S2, and you have the S3.

[Guide] Root Wifi Tether for Z3v

Thanks to badjedi for pointing this out. I have verified that the X Tether module for the Xposed Framework will allow you to successfully tether using the stock app provided with the Z3v.
This is primarily for those of you who have a Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan with Verizon Wireless and would like to not have to pay for tethering while we wait for customs roms. I apologize in advance for not being able to post links. The required files are attached.
If you are not already rooted, please follow GigaSPX's guide on how to root your Z3v.
Please download and install wifi_tether_v3_1-beta14.apk from code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Open the installed app and verify that Disable Update-Check is selected under settings
Press the big button to start tethering. Click grant when prompted for root access. The big button will turn yellow. Press it again to stop tethering. You will get a bunch of errors during this process, this is normal. This will install the required binaries and config files to /data/data/com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether/
Restart your phone.
Verify that tether.edify is located in /data/data/com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether/conf/ using root explorer or another file manager of your choice. If it does not exist repeat the above steps.
Replace tether.edify with my modified version located in the attached tether.7z archive.
You can now tether over wifi using this app.
NOTE:
Enable WiFi-Encryption does not work.
Enable Access-Control does work and can be used to prevent unauthorized access to your network.
Make sure under Advanced Wi-Fi in your system settings the option Scanning always available is checked.
I followed your steps exactly, but it doesn't seem to be broadcasting. I don't see a wifi signal from the phone on my computer or ipod, even though it says it is broadcasting. I've uninstalled the app, cleared the data, and reinstalled app using the procedure above twice. Any suggestions?

Answer:
Make sure under Advanced Wi-Fi settings the option Scanning always available is checked.
Extra info:
This is needed because I haven't found the name of the wifi kernel module and this setting keeps the module loaded even when wifi is switched off. Also, if you are using windows 8.1 you may not be able to see and connect to an ad-hoc network without using the command prompt. For some reason Microsoft decided to remove this default functionality after Windows 7. Not relevant here but...It is the same for recent android kernels, no support to connect to ad-hoc networks through the Wifi settings without using shell commands.
I haven't had much time due to work, but I am certain infrastructure mode will work on this phone. I can't promise I'll get it done anytime soon though since work is going to be way to demanding for a couple months.
FYI, I've discovered that the Xposed mod X Tether works to enable the native hotspot without the entitlement check.

I sure would've loved if this discovery was made at least 2 weeks ago. The stupid entitlement checking wouldn't let me hotspot from a foreign sim card while I was in Thailand.

WiFi Tether app on Honor5x

Hello everyone. I was finally able to root my H5X, and the first app I tried was WiFi Tether paid app. Everything checked out fine, but after enabling it, i still can't seem to find the network. Any ideas? Or has anybody tried yet and has success?

If you are on AT&T you may need to be rooted and delete a folder in system/app called ATTEntitle. It should fix Hotspot in 3rd party tether app or (Free) Native Android Hotspot in settings. If you are on another carrier I don't know. I have been trying to get none working for a while. See here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3307384
I'm on T-Mobile. I have the grandfathered $80 unlimited 4g LTE with 7gbs hotspot. And I'm rooted. Busybox installed.

I think you CAN use Native Android Hotspot in instead of 3rd party tether but you need to change your "tether APN" to default "internet APN."
Maybe this thread can help http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...lopment/unrestricted-tethering-n920t-t3188301 But if you Try this you will want to monitor your data usage on T-Mobile website (or however you keep track). You don't want to run out of "tether data" if you can prevent it.

I tried using native hotspot last night and it worked great. Streamed about 4 movies last night. Verified my T-Mobile account this morning and I can confirm that my wifi hotspot shows 7.9mb/7GBs.
This is what my account shows
Very nice, so just using the app alone has stopped the tethering number from climbing?
