My current portable hard drive apparently uses too much power for the galaxy tab.
Are there any 500gig + hard drives that use the same power as a thumb drive or is this just wishful thinking?

You will have to use an USB Hub with power supply. All spinning HDD's require much more power than the tablet is supplying.
I know it is not cheap, but you can today buy 128GB USB flash drives - they will work well and store also a lot of HD movies!
i am curious how you are connection your HD to the tab? if you are usign the usb host usb adapter, the little paper that came with it supports up to 32gb fat32 drives. i dont know if thats true or not, but if it is, you wont even be able to use a 128 usb flash drive as previously suggested.
i can confirm that a 32gb fat32 usb flash drive works, used with my sandisk cruiser 32
For portability the Seagate wireless drive would work.

Using a powered hub will work just fine with portable hard drives. I have a 500GB Seagate that works very well
The USB 2.0 spec can only handle supplying 100mA x 5. So 500mA draw us the max it can supply to any drive. I don't know of any drives that are that low, might as well use a flash drive or SD card.

Hosts are actually not required to supply 500 mA even. They are required to supply 100, and may negotiate up to 500 during device enumeration.
PCs that don't support 500 are extremely rare, but mobile devices with OTG are a different story - many are limited to 100. This seems to include our device.
2.5" spinning hard drives that use less than 500 can be found. Less than 100 is not possible.
As to the 32GB limit - I have no idea why that's in the flyer, other than maybe the fact that it's VERY rare to see drives above this size formatted as FAT since Windows refuses to format drives of this size as FAT.
I have a 120GB WD external drive that works fine on my netbook (single USB port cable) I'll have to pick up a USB adapter and try it.
IIRC as the size (GB) of the drive goes up so does it's power draw.

Sounds awesome! So, I suppose any powered hub works. Did you format the HD in any specific way or by the help of some fancy software (just wondering as I think Fat32 cannot be formatted under Win7 if the harddisk exceeded size x) ?

If your tab is rooted you can get "usb mass storage otg" from the market which support your ntfs formatted drives no need for fat 32 crap anymore!

So it's true, you actually have to format your 500GB drive as FAT32 to get it working?
I guess this means no HD movies (files bigger than 4 GB) right?
i plug in the lod fashioned 3.5hdd externally powered and ntfs formatted,
not able to connect 2.5hdds yet. if anyone was successful,what is powered usb hub used, i was not able to connect using a local brand of powered usb hub.

I don't know about Vegan (still on stock TNT), but with stock TNT, you plug the FAT32-formatted drive in, and it appears under /usbdisk. Have you tried plugging your drive in (the USB port under the rubber cover on the side of the Gtab) and then looked at /usbdisk?

P.S. For your FAT32-formatted drive, make sure that there is only ONE FAT32 partition on it. I think that there was another user who wasn't able to see his drive, but found a hidden partition on the drive (not sure, I don't think he responded definitevely).

Since I originally posted I reformatted the hard drive to NTFS since 5.1 is suppose to support this now. I do try to find the drive under usbdisk but is does not show up... I am quessing we probably need to create a new mount point for the hard drive but I have no clue how to do this on Android.

Sorry that I won't be able to help you on that, since I'm not on Vegan ...
Probably need something like:
mkdir /mnt/ntfs
mount -t ntfs /dev/xxxxx??? /mnt/ntfs
though, I would have thought that vold would've automatically taken care of it.

But wait, it works fine on the computer, why not the G tab? So what gives?
For me the usb port on my G tab does not put out enough power to run the drive up to 100%. It's all about amperage, and I found that my G tab did not output enough milliamps @ 5 volts to make the drive read / write. Some drives use less, some more, just depends on what you have. If you have a external powered hard drive that shouldn't be a problem. If your drive is trying to operate solely on a usb host, then it may / may not work reliably.
Anyways that's my G tab / hard drive experience and I use external powered drives with no problems.
(hint) If your drive is making a slight clicking sound when plugged in to the G tab then you probably have same problem I did.

Does anybody know the maximum current supplied by the GTab's USB host port?
My 2.5" 500 GB External came with only a short (single) usb A to usb mini cable.
And it gets powered up fine from every laptop/netbook I have tried. They have always displayed 500 mA max current for each port.(when I look in Windows Device Manager, USB Root Hub).
Can the G-Tab supply up to 500 mA from it's USB host port??
I want to make sure it will work on a GTab before I buy it.
i tested my gtab and i get 488ma out of my usb port. that is the max i can pull. It's the same when charging or not.

Old thread but this is EXACTLY what I was looking for when I registered here. I have TONS of 16gb and 32gb USB drives, SDHC cards, microSD cards, a few USB thumbdrive adapter's for the SD cards....I watch movies on my gTab from these various drives but I wanted to buy a larger external HDD. Didn't know if I needed a self powered one or if the USB port on the gTab would power it alone.
Looks like I'm buying an external HDD with a power cord! Too bad my 2tb one I have now is formatted to NTFS and has A LOT of data on it already......

i only just found out these are a 'thing', they actually exist

Some people have reported success with USB host on Flyer with Honeycomb using a powered hub. I have not tried that myself.
Most NAS (network attached storage) drives can be used with android, but i recommend you get one of the file manager apps that supports them from the app market. Most have a web based interface as well, but this is usually slow and clunky.
Many are way cheaper than this Seagate item.
I use Dropbox cloud storage with great success.

are you 'sure' there is, or are you just assuming? because i can't find anything
other threads on xda say that a powered external drive 'should' work (but no one who has tried it has confirmed), and on androidforums they categorically say that it will not work
If you are only concerned with videos or music, get a DLNA compatible server and that will work with Flyer, problem with all of these is they need a wireless LAN and its hard to guess if they will work with the Flyer or any other device in a standalone mode. I"m betting the Flyer will refuse to connect to them ad-hoc.
This Seagate device does appear to have a unique ability to setup its own network allowing direct access without another router. Might be useful in that regard. Of course performance is going to be slow, but fast enough to stream one file.
Be sure and read the reviews of users for the android app before you buy one, they are very poor.

yes, i had read those app reviews, which has simply brought me back to the most basic of questions: other than 32GB SD cards, we have zero confirmed options on extending storage?
Unless you are sitting on a LAN via wifi, or you are running Honeycomb with a powered hub, you'd be a lot better off carrying extra SD cards. This is the same for MOST, not all tablets. Except for a couple of heavyweights, even those that have USB host don't have the power to run a external USB drive

It has 2 usb connectors one for power and data the other for just power.
I formatted it in Fat32 and found a 2 dollar adaptor to plug the data connector into my flyer.
I then plug the power connector into a usb power source (I’m using the charger from my EVO 4G phone)
Works great … all the files are displayed in Astro and Root Explorer.
I’ve seen the drives as cheap as 75 dollars. Just search around.

It’s really simple … if the device you are trying to use doesn’t have its own power supply it will draw power from the usb connection, however the Flyer doesn’t provide power.
So you will need to use a powered hub for your device to get power to operate

but if the external drive is connected to the powered hub, how will it also connect to the flyer? Y cable?

I’m running FlyHoney (haven't updated to latest leak yet) and after plugging in the device I go to settings > storage scroll down to usb storage then mount usb.
Then open Astro and scroll down ... there is new folder labeled USB.
OK, I have Honeycomb too, stock version, but the Host USB does not come online with either a standard cable or an OTG cable. The disk is powered by a Y cable or I can connected it the powered hub. The disk is formatted FAT32 as it should be , looking at the dmesg in terminal , the USB interface never even activates. I wonder if FlyHoney does anything special that stock HC does not do?

I use a 64gb Flash drive formatted to FAT32 thru one of those cheap ebay usb adapters and it works fine. Comes up as UsbDriveA.

Supposedly you can, however, in order to accomplish this, first the external HDD would have to be formatted in FAT32, or possibly EXT2/3/4; something which is natively recognized by the 7.7 Also, since the USB adapter only supplies a minimum amount of power (150mA I think), the HDD would have to be externally powered, either by its own power adapter, or by connecting through a powered USB hub (assuming the hub also has enough power to run the HDD).
It didn't recognize my external 500GB NTFS drive. I have a spare that I can format with FAT32 and will try that just for grins if I get a chance tomorrow. Otherwise, meh.
Update: I tried this with an external USB (self-powered) drive formatted in FAT32 and I got an error message saying "High Powered USB Device Connected: Cannot connect to...."

It works great on the 7.7 so exFAT is supported and even plays HD movies and lets you transfer files to the 7.7 and back.
I already had the 30pin to usb adapter.

How did you manage to get the 7.7 to read/write exFAT formatted disk? I can't seem to make it work here. Tried both Asian and European ROMs but in vain. Can anybody else who has a USB connector with an exFAT stick confirm this?

Just wanted to let everyone know that a USB A Male to A Female won't really help much...
For a matter of fact it won't do anything... it's like an elongation cable of 8cm which is crap!!! I guess I wanted to get a Female-Female but came out a bit of a retard...
I wanted to use the 30pin to USB cable, connect it to a Female-Female converter and shove my other USBs on the other end.... wondering if that will work....
Anyhow that's just my 2 dimes...

exFat doesnt work on micro sd cards in built-in slot so I guess it won't work on any other medium...

I have tried three different external hard drive assemblies ( one desktop, two portable) all with external power applied. One of the portables always triggers the High Power Device shutoff. So I think it depends on the drive box interface electronics.

I got it! I've tested it out and everything seems to be working out. However, I can't seem to get my 128 GB SD to be recognized with the SD Adapter.
It comes up as "SD card blank or unsupported filesystem"
I've formatted the card to NTFS and ext4 to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Edit: I got Fat32 to work with my 128 GB SD card. With the limitation of Fat32, I won't be able to transfer a file larger than 4 GB. Anyone how to get around this issue?
As stated by someone else earlier in this thread, try formatting with exFAT.
Is there anyway to connect 2.5 external HD?
I mean, using external power kinda defeat the purpose...

Did you buy a USB OTG cable? And did you check within a file explorer of your choice (I'm using EStrongs) whether you get the USB storage as a new directory? I unfortunately neither do carry the USB OTG cable nor a USB stick with me so I can't tell you the exact directory name.

Works with my firmware mod C232B005 and the new kernel-3.0.42.
I just tested that with some video from a 8Gb USB pen drive.
You need a mini USB-B to USB-A adapter/connector.
I'm using build number S7-301uV100R002C232B005, Android version 4.0.3, kernel version 3.0.8
I bought a USB OTG cable, don't have a file explorer but alogcat didn't show any activity when I plugged the drive in.
Works fine on mine. It was even working in HC3.2 rom. Keyboard, mouse, pendrives and usb card readers ( used to read my cybershot's card) works fine. But have to tap 'mount usb storage' several times to access my other phone's (HTC wildfire) SD card over usb.

OTG works fine even on stock rom. Tested with various USB flash drives and card readers/SD cards of various sizes. Also have played numerous media using the OTG too. I think format should be FAT/FAT32.
One thing that didn't work was an external hard drive (500gb). Maybe it needs its own power for it to mount on the mediapad though I haven't tried formatting it to FAT/FAT32 yet as its my backup drive.

This has been an issue with Android USB OTG since the beginning. Flash drives, mice, and keyboards will work fine by themselves, but anything that requires a little more juice like spinning platter drives needs to be run through a powered USB hub. As for drive format, only FAT/FAT32 is supported. However, some custom kernels have allowed for NTFS file support.
As a side note, I can also confirm that USB 3.0 drives work with the OTG cable. (Patriot Supersonic Express 32GB tested)

I already had an inclination that this should be the case but was not able to confirm as I don't have any external HDD with its own power nor do I have a powered USB hub. Thanks again for providing this explanation.

Does anybody know if the OTG support on the springboard goes beyond OS/file system support, and allows for third party android apps to connect to usb devices?
an example would be the DSLR Controller android app or Remote Release android app being able to see/control a Canon DSLR...

I tried both apps with my Rebel XSi/450D and had no luck with the OTG cable. Neither app recognizes that the camera is plugged into the tablet. I'm running HWMODs ROM with the MediaPad EX kernel. The last time I tried the app was with my Asus Transformer TF101, and it worked great (no OTG needed though).
Camera also doesn't mount as usb device for file transfers when plugged in.

FAT32 works perfectly with OTG cable. However, I can confirm that NTFS works just fine also. Not sure if it's built into the stock ROM but it works for me running HWMODs ROM and the MediaPad EX kernel.
Remote control works perfectly fine with my 550D over OTG cable. USB FAT32 sticks works fine as well. Don't remember about NTFS. DO NOT connect exFAT drives, as Huawei ROMs kills exFAT partitions! And I wasn't able to recover them. It won't recognize my card reader though...

hi i have just bought a huawei mediapad t1-8.0 and i change it to russian firmware-rooted with towellroot-installed with estrong but i cant see any usb device when i plug in my usb with usb otg cable. anything missing in my component to make it work? tnx for add in your rlpy.
I am not that skilled IT wise I wrongly assumed that my OTG device was a plug and go! Now I am stumped I had hoped to turn my Huawei T5 pad as A TV in my camper. 12v TV's are to expensive as I am retired on a limited income. Is there an easy fix in IT speak that may work for me???

I have been using OTG to transfer files from and to my galaxy devices and it is working very well
But the sad news is that our note pro cannot give enough power to portable HDD ( the ones i used were 1Tb and 2tb, on my note 3 and my note edge they work but not on the note pro)
You can connect flash memories and anything that consumes low voltage like a mouse or a keyboard or a flash memory

I'm not looking to connect hdd's.
I already have planned what I'm doing.
First of all I'm gonna find some way to strap it to the back of the tablet case, and then, I got 1 for now, ultra fit usb flash drive, which will go in one of the usb ports.
I got a memory stick pro duo adapter which I can slot two of my micro sd cards into, and then stick it in the otg.
And then one micro sd card in an sd card adapter to put in the sd card slot. :3
This thing makes no sense. It's great yeah, but it's weird, it can have three flash drives or usb devices running at once, but when it comes to cards of any kind, you can only use one at a time, even if one is in a usb adapter, it still won't allow two.
It makes no sense, usb all you want, but cards only one. Why?

Maybe the adapter requires extra power that the note pro cannot give
Can you send a picture of what you have and how you connected them to the note pro?
I will try it and see if i am having similar issue

Here are several methods I use; a 128Gb Sandisk USB 3 thumb drive [http://a.co/9OVzdu5 ] and a USB 3 OTA adapter [http://a.co/jfMs2Yq ] along with the 128gb micro card in the device. If you need terabytes, get a wireless battery powered portable hard drive [http://a.co/fzM9ZPi], it works on mine. I also had a spare 240gb mSATA card from when I replaced my laptop drive. I bought a case for it and use that - the tablet has enough power to use it. Finally, I have connected a self-powered 2 Tb desktop drive with good results via the OTG cable. It just takes a while when opening your file explorer. Last, but not least, you can connect to your NAS via WiFi [ I use QNAP, and have accessed it from everywhere that I've visited that had good inet speeds via the QNAP apps]

QNAP is a hardware vendor for Network Attached Storage units - look on Amazon or NewEgg. I got the empty 2 bay one and loaded some spare drives I had laying around so I have 2 Tbytes mirrored now. Their apps allow remote access for files, music and movies to their devices.

I am using a Y-cable that powers device and allow OTG at the same time with usb 3.0.It is sufficient to power my 2.5 HDD
