[Q] What is safe from here? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so before my Atrix was stock on Gingerbread 2.3.4 OTA update. I then sbf flashed the pudding ROM, and it flashed correctly but my Atrix said boot error 0X1000 and that it detected no OS. It gave me the options regularly seen on the boot screen (including recovery, bp bypass nv flash, etc). To remedy this I did fast boot oem unlock and then fast boot reboot. The phone was unlocked, and at first it was stuck on the dual core screen, but on second boot it booted into the new ROM. I then flashed a custom recovery (tenfar's) and installed the pre release CM7 ROM. I'm now rooted and unlocked running CM7. My question is, do I ever need to use sbf flash again or can I always just install through my custom clockwork mod recovery. Also, when I do install a ROM through cwm recovery, is it just like sbf flash, as in does it overwrite all previous data and I'm starting fresh with my new ROM (after cache and data wipes of course)? And if I ever do sbf flash to something higher than 1.8.3 (my fuse has already been burned since I did the OTA to 2.3.4, will it be safe)?
Lastly, an important question I need to ask pertains to the cwm recovery. Whenever I try to use a function on ROM Manager, it says I need to flash clockwork mod recovery, even though I already have Tenfar's cwm recovery flashed into my phone. Is it safe to flash cwm recovery that ROM Manager is asking me to flash even while I have Tenfar's custom recovery flashed on my phone?

Yes, threw cwm a full rom if you wipe all your data, it will be like a fresh install.
But it won't erase recovery or mess with bootloader
You can skip flash sbf's by using cwm zips, since every custom rom is in cwm and none in sbf.
If you update to a higher who knows?
You are already in gb. The sure if you downgrade with ota sbf you will hard brick!
In an upgrade, mmm let's say ICS, as they promised to unlock the BP, may they finally do it..
If they dont, or its not safe etc,
Don't worry . Devs will make again a safe cwm zip.
For rom manager.
Yes, it is safe, but..
It doesn't support sdcard-ext.. Only the internal.. So stay with tenfars or with the new one, of another guy in dev section.
ofcourse you can install eg rom managers recovery, and after that install using fastboot tenfars or the other one..
Its safe. If you know what you are doing.
One recovery will be installed each time..
Its up too you..

Danger!
To be honest...
you can use clockworkmod and take advantage of your unlocked bootloader, but the second that you brick (soft/hard) your device, you are in trouble. You wont be able to reflash it back to stock because the only SBFs that exist are for 4.5.57, and 4.5.52. Reflashing either of these downgrades WILL BREAK YOUR DEVICE FOR GOOD.
If you are lucky, you might be able to use fastboot to restore stock images, but if I were you, I would head on over to:
direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/motosupport/source/softwareupdate.asp
and use the update software to return your phone to factory ROM. With an OTA updated Atrix, there is too much chance that your phone will be rendered useless.
Do what you wish, but be mindful of the consequences.

This is all very confusing. There is a 4.5.91 SBF. It isn't a downgrade. It should only be flashed as a last resort though. It will remove the word "unlocked" from your boot screen, but it can't un-burn the fuse.
The far safer option is to use CWM for everything. This is the recommended approach.

As to your CWM question, I believe romracer's CWM is the new standard. I thought the CM7 instructions even said to use it to install CM7.

[Q] Recovery img flashing (Stock 2.1 rom)

Hi,
Due to HTC's special touches, the recovery image doesnt stay flashed, and on normal boot its flashed over (meaning if i try to go to recovery after a normal boot, i get the red triangle stuff, and have to pull the battery). I was wondering if this would potentially cause troubles if i was trying to flash a custom ROM from recovery? in other notes, i do find sometimes i have to pull the battery 4 or 5 times to get it to normally boot (thats without holding the buttons >.>).
Thanks in advance.
HTC HERO recovery image flashing problems
I am having exactly the same problem!
I did a quite a bit of research on how to root, backup and flash my HERO and every guide I found describes the process using Universal AndRoot + Rom Manager and it seems there should be no problems. I already rooted my phone successfully, installed Rom Manager and flashed either ClockworkMod 2.5.0.1 or RA Recovery 1.7.0.1 which are able to boot but only once. The next time I reboot I get the red triangle warning and it loads into stock recovery (by pressing vol_up + powroff buttons), so the custom recovery lasts only one boot cycle. I was able to backup but I don't want to risk to wipe and flash since there is a chance it might stuck in the bootscreen loop afterwards and I won't be able to do anything.
There is a thing with s-off and SPrecovery which helps to resolve the problem but it doesn't look like there is anything for HERO.
Any help would be appreciated.
ps I tried to manually flash recovery from inside the phone and from windows command line with the same result.
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/8182-how-to-root-your-hero
posted some similar comments over there, and the only init script that i can find when in recovery.
Yeah I posted my question there too.
I was able to find some information about the issue (he is talking about Villain ROM but I think it doesn't really matter):
pulser_g2:
Repeat the process again, as I think stock ROMs try and overwrite the recovery each time they boot. When you finish the process, immediately nandroid and flash VR12. That will then flash a new recovery, AmonRA 1.6.2a, and you will be sorted

So it looks like we should just go ahead and flash a custom rom which, in theory, will eliminate the problem.
yeah was tempted to just flash, but sending duck my system img for him to dissect anyway.
yeah worked fine, running cm6.1 now
Yeah once you root you have to flash a custom rom before reboot or u loose the root
I learnt it after lots of reboots and re roots.
but now I wanted to know if I could save the original rom which i have as nand backup to make as an update.zip like custom rom for safe keepimg
I flashed CM6.1 -based TastyFroyo 1.2 and I can confirm custom recovery stays flashed now.

[Q] Possible Atrix Softbrick, Please help?

I am running 2.2.2 Froyo with 1.77 build.
I unlocked and rooted via Gingerbreak.
I went into CWM Recovery, erased all cache and flashed Alien Rom v3 and immediately flashed the Alien theme over it (I think that is where I made my booboo). The Rom appeared to load perfectly yet when the phone restarted the Moto logo animation appeared to run then the screen would go dark. This process repeats every few seconds non stop.
I can get into Android Recovery, RSD, everything. I tried flashing the 1.8.3 sbf through RS Lite 5.3.1 and while it said "PASS" it still hangs at the Moto animation.
I have no idea what to do. I think I can get out of it as I have done A LOT of searching through the forums and google but I am terrible with CMD.
Any helpful and/or useful advice?

Are you unlocked and flashed cwm through fastboot, or did you use the system recovery app?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
System recovery app. I can access Androids recovery (obviously) but not many options...
Did you unlock your bootloader?
I ran into the same issue the first time I tried to flash Alien. Since you're flashing Alien, I assume your bootloader is unlocked (As it's required for Alien).
If you have an unlocked bootloader, do this:
EDITED: Apparently, I'm a new user and can't post links. Go to the address bar and replace the number with 1163342
Use Fastboot to flash the boot.img and the system.img files. This will give you Gingerbread/Motoblur like it comes out of the box. (It's a start!)
Thanks for the link. Will try when I get home. If I can just get past cmd...

[Q] Stuck On Motorola Dual Core with 2.3.6.. Bricked ?

Hello ... I hava an atrix 4g with 2.3.6 OTA update and Locked Bootloader .. I've rooted the phone and installed bootstrap recovery successfully and made a backup for official rom ...
The problem is after Flashing Ginger Blur Rom my phone stuck at "Dual Core motorola Screen " and as i read, flashing Official SBF File may cause hardbrick .. So is there any solution to enter Boot Strap recovery Using Fastboot and make a restore or anything else Safe ?
Thanks for this Professional Forum ....
Get the correct Kernel zip file, to flash over CWM.
Thanks you ... but my problem is that I cant access CWM Recovery because i Have a Locked Boot loader and there is no way to launch bootstrap recovery and reboot to CWM
You can use Android Recovery (3e) by default, HOLD down volume and shows fastboot than, Recovery. Its a stock.
Ok ... but what should I do with stock recovery I tried to wipe but the device still stuck and also i cant flash any rom using the stock recovery
You can flash stock kernel another way. By Android Recovery, with CWM.

Read OP boot loader is locked. He can't install cwm without unlocking boot loader. And I don't think flashing a stock kernel will help bring back the phone to stock.

You should have not flashed ginger blur with the locked boot loader…ill search around and look for a solution. Are you OK with unlocking your boot loader?
<edit> flashing the sbf should fix the issue. Make sure you DON'T flash sbf lower than 2.3.6 otherwise you'll brick your phone.

[Q] Moto quad core screen freeze

Phone: Atrix 4g, 4.5.141 ATT, Andriod Version: 2.3.6 Kernal 2.6.32.9, Unlocked, rooted, in USA running ROM manager, titanium backup pro, and ROMRACER. I have run Moto stock with updates until now.
Lurked here forever, haven't had to post until now. Since Moto has end of serviced the atrix I figure I would try my hand at CM7 and maybe CM10 once the big boys get all the drivers working.
I am trying to flash CM7 and I keep getting stuck when re-booting at Red Moto emblem with the quad core screen. I have left it run for 30 minutes. The only way out is to pull battery re-boot to CWM and re-flash ATT.GB236_45141_PureStock_v21.5_xanadu_upndwn4par and start again. I can back up upndwn4's ROM while it's running with ROMRACER, but I can't restore it. I get a system error from CWM when I try to re-flash it.
Tried:
Reset/Wipe cache/wipe davilik every time
multiple different ROMs including Ba2tF, CM-10-20121010-unofficial-olympus, MROM all downloaded a couple of times
Tenfar's CWM instead of ROMRACER
Flashing off of internal
Flashing off of external
When I flash the CM7 or CM10 ROM it takes about a minute to flash before CWM says it's completed. But when I flash back to stock it takes 4-6 min. to flash.
Can't figure out why I can't flash anything other than the stock ROM. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Lol. Quad core screen? You have a powerful atrix!
Anyways, try a fastboot erase system and fastboot erase userdata before flashing CM7/10.

Yep my dual core is gonna become a quad if I can't figure this out.
Tried fastboot erase system and userdata, then restore/wipe/wipe install from SD (internal)...nope, sitting here looking at the same dang M
Thanks for the suggestion...got any more?
i have exactly the same problem with my atrix, i have 4.5.141 ATT en.US with android 2.3.6 NottachTrix 1.3.1 (this is the only custom rom that works after flash) i want to install cm9 or jb so baddd !! i hope someone know how to get this over :-/
Don't forget, you need to clear userdata (fastboot -w) AND cache (fastboot erase cache). You could also do that through recovery. I recommend TWRP 2.3.0.0. You can install it via Goo Manager or download the image from here and install it via fastboot (fastboot erase recovery and then fastboot flash recovery #filename#.img)
Haven't tried TWRP yet. Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that next.
Ok some sucess. Re-flashed based on the 5th post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525804&highlight=moto-fastboot+stock except for the OEM part because I am all ready unlocked.
Rooted again using auto unlock 4.2 instead of Pete's tools because the link was dead.
Updated recovery to touch recovery 5.8.1.8
Made another backup existing functioning stock ROM
Tried to flash a new Faux123 CM7 Kernel downloaded from ROM manager - fail when to boot loop re-booting constantly
Recovery to CWM and restored from backup WORKING NOW yippie! At least I can recover without having to re-flash stock each time
Downloaded MIUI 2.10.12 from ROM Manager and installed....error in downloaded Miui ROM (status 7) installation aborted.
Rebooting...will restore again if necessary...sigh more research ahead of me a fear.
I win
Big thanks to vladeco,. Since fastboot -w and fastboot erase worked so well getting ROM Manager to restore it tried them again before flashing CM7. Done and done.
Now I have backups of Stock, CM7 and am moving on to CM10 epinter's.
Flashed Epinter's CM10 - now running chrome, no isses heck even the video camcorder works!
Done and DONE!

Question on Flashing a ROM

Been on the Samsung side of the street for the past four years so if it wasn't named after a accient Viking God then I'm lost However just a couple questions if I may: I am unlocked, rooted, recovery installed, & TA backed up however not real sure how the whole boot image flash works, does this need to be done everytime I go to flash a ROM? Also do I have to reflash recovery everytime I flash a ROM? just remember reading that somewhere, been trying to read all I can

You only need to flash a boot image once to get the recovery going if you have a locked bootloader then this will have to be done, if it is unlocked as you have said then you do not need to do this again. The recovery should stay how it is. Some kernels that you can flash have twrp and usually cwm included, when you flash it you'll have access to both.
Cool, welcome!
The recovery is included in the kernel (boot.img), so it's automatically updated/flashed every time you install a ROM zip through recovery. The very first time you install a CM/AOSP/etc ROM, you may have to first flash the boot image through fastboot, like you said, to get a recovery compatible with the ROM. I think you only have to do this when going from stock based recovery to AOSP based recovery.
Oops, got beaten.

Not quite correct but close
You have installed recovery (dual by [NUT]?). most ROMs are completable with both twrp and cwm. Just flash the zip for the rom (after making a backup. choose the recovery that is in the ROM*). if this fails then you can flash the boot.img from the zip with adb/fastboot (fastboot flash boot <boot_img_name>). most ROMs only contain one recovery
* CM based normally have cwm. Slim, omni, candy all use twrp from memory
Okay thanks guys very much appreciated, so if I'm understanding you correctly then I don't need to flash any "boot images" becuase I am already unlocked and on a non stock recovery(dual recovery by NUT) becuase the "boot image" is just the recovery? So since I already have nuts dual recovery then I should be good to
Enter TWRP
Nandroid, Wipe
Flash CM 11+Gapps
Reboot
???
If not correct please let me know, sorry just trying to make sure I'm understanding this correctly, and if not then my ass needs to go read some more ;+)

boot.img is the kernel (and ramdisk etc) + recovery
If you are going to flash CM the do it from cwm as then the nandroid backup can be flashed from the recovery that cm uses. other than that you are about right (wipe both caches and /data, dont wipe /system. the ROM will take care of this)
