Searched around a lot about this, and just really need some clarification.
When connecting to Kies I'm prompted about the latest firmware PDA:KG5 / phone:KG1 / CSC:KG1 (XSG.) Is this the official release of 2.3.4 or 2.3.5? and what is the proper term to call this update by, KG5 or KG1 (not sure if you use the PDA # or the phone/CSC # to state which firmware Im using during online conversation.)
Also I am currently rooted on PDA:KF3 / Phone:KF1 / CSC:KF2 (XSG.) Which is 2.3.3. I know I will loose my root / super user status if I do the firmware update via Kies.
If I do update to the KG5 firmware listed above, what is the best method to root? If the firmware update I listed above is 2.3.4, Can I use the same method as listed all over the place to root the leaked version of 2.3.4 that came out in early July (I believe it was KG3?) The method is pretty much Orion & super one click.
If the firmware update I listed above is 2.3.5, what is the best way to root it? All in all, I'm not sure if you can root a stock release from Samsung the same way as a leaked version.
Thanks in advance everyone, this is my first Android phone after years in IOS so I apologize in advance if my question makes no sense. I'm doing my best!
Don't get too much confused.
It's an official release and you should update. No way it will be 2.3.5. Then you could use Chainfire's kernel for root. Normally we quote the PDA version as firmware, so you could quote it as KG5.
Link to CF kernel thread,

Regards.
Thank You very much for the clarification.
I will try that out.
I would flash with odin, kies might brick your phone. by the way, you can flash cf kernel again, but first install original firmware. It must be three parts and a pit file,
Repartition box should be checked.
You will lose your data, secure your phone with titanium backup then you can restore you apps and give them back their memories.
hope it helps.

Hold on mate, Kies would brick your phone?
Well well well, I haven't heard this ever and I don't think it is true. Bricking a device is not an easy thing. Well I like Odin too, that's because of it has some other connection/drivers problem sometimes, but 'Bricking'? Nah, Negative.
The other thing is, I'd always recommend update via Kies if the user is new comer and have less idea about upgradation, he could do some mistakes in Odin, but never in Kies.
Regards.

Thanks ithehappy. I looked hard to find this thread and glad for it. I was about to flash from KF2 to the new one offered by the updated Kies software - firmware version KG5 in my case. Atm I have a rooted phone and replaced the stock XXKF2 kernal back using ODIN successfully using the one offered here somewhere on XDA. (got rid of the yellow triangle issue on boot).
Do you think if I flash using Kies all will be right??? Just got nervous from what the other poster said... I am not overly interested in rooting again, It was mere experimentation that made me do it in the first place. Cheers & thanks for your time.
To mooksy
if you have replaced the unofficial firmware or kernal back to the original everything will be fine. The only problem you will have is that if you havent replaced all the non-official with official then kies wont recognise your phone anyway and you wont be able to update that way.

Thanks cooza, I have read the thread on here concerning the KD5 update and a lot of people make the process sound really confusing to say the least, obsessive IMHO . Is it worth the trouble updating the SGS2 right now? Afterall my phone is fine and I thought rooting would be some kind of epiphany but to me its just... (shrugs shoulder)

Please don't advise people to use PIT files and Repartition unless you are going to back them up with a replacement phone.
Please remember, most pple who come here are really not very experienced and don't really know what they are doing.

1. It would be the release of 2.3.4 as as the other on has not been leaked yet,
there is only one trial version in the CM7 but it is a work in progress.
2. You would call it by its PDA # KG5. CSC and Phone can be any
combination depend on which country you are in.
3. yes, after flashing you will need to reroot again.
4. Just use chainfire Kg5 root. You will not need to use super one click as
chainfire has done all the work for you.
use this thread for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
5. you can root a stock version the same as a leaked version. You may have to
wait a day or so till chainfire has made a root for it. He is usually on top of
it as soon as someone sends him the kernal.

If you are happy with your phone and your not much of a flasher or rom changer and all that then just stay as you are if your happy.Unrooting and flashing to the lastest via kies is also a good idea cos kies is an official update so can only bring good things, right. If you feel the need then re-root.Kies is always a safe bet if your new to updates and at least they are all offiall so if something did happen samsung would have to cover it while odin is an "at your own risk" deal.
COOZA
Sorry off-topic (ish) I read that you bricked two of your phones using tar files for sgs2 on sgs, did you manage to jig it back to life and with any success? I want to root again after using Kies for KG5 update. but now i'll use CF's work on here. After reading that other sites could result in potential disaster I think I was lucky , i too just googled a random site for the rooting kit.
Unfortunatly for me i damaged the bootloader so the jig wont work.Im going to have to find someone with a riff box jtag and see if that works.I hope its does.If i cant find anyone with one ill just have to buy it myself.Worth the money when its 2 phones that need to be done.My bricking came from a site that mixed up phones with other phones firmwares.Wont be going back there again and that was before i hooked up to XDA anyway. Now all my downloads are done from here as this a good site to be with.

Yes. You can always flash the official firmwares. However, you'll need to root it again when you do.
IF u have updated firmware KE2 can u root like normal still? or do u have to downgrade first?
if you are wanting to upgrade officially, just do it through Kies. you will loose your root, but you can re-root and it will keep the latest firmware upgrade [like KE2]
Rumble
KE2 root then upgrade kernel to KE2 after root .
If you have an update through Kies or the original phone firmware then Kies is your update path .
If you have flashed firmware via Odin then you will usually find that codes no longer match and Kies has no firmware for the codes on the phone .

So u can put whatewer firmware u want in ur phone ? How i can see my firmware version , in seting about it say xxkd9 ^^ i dont know whats that and how i can buck it up leater :/ When i conect to kies it say this device canot be updated
OK! Thanks all for your replies!
So, now as I am on a rooted device, when I plug my phone to the computer and it finds an official firmware via Kies, I can safely install it without manually taking the root away? This is done by automatic? That's how I understand. It's not like my phone is angry and punished me by bricking?
Thanks again.
Seems pretty difficult to brick the SGS2. I bought a little jig off ebay for £4 which automatically puts the device into download mode - useful even if the three-button method doesn't work. Also resets the custom binary count
What happens to my root exclusive apps if a firmware update deletes the root access?
Flashed KE7....
...my first post.
So I flashed KE7 (newest firmware), ...I originally had Root on the KE2, as per the instructions in the ROM & Developers Section for the SGS2........after flashing KE7 I still have root, AND KE7, with no yellow triangle.
I am not complaing just pleasantly surprised I did not have to Re-Root....anyone else had this.
Since I cannot post in the Development section yet I thought I would comment here.
Also would like to say what a fantastic job the guys developing are doing on these sites, you provide alot of geeks and non-geeks with many happy evenings.

I just ordered mine and started reading more about Android. So may i ask what is KE2 and KE7? The SGII hasnt been out for more then a month or two i think so is there already several updates?
If so what do they add? very curious
KE2 and 7 are just firmware updates from Samsung, am not sure if they are generic or related to specific markets. KE7 works for me, I still have root and now I have the extra 4mb (833 to 837 mb)....so something worked.

Not sure if yours came with KE7 but if you upgraded did you loose all your data/settings? Comming from iPhone i'm used to loose them all when flashing but then i can simply connect to iTunes and restore everything just the way it was (game saves, all phone settings, appz&games, contact etc).
How is this achieved in Android enviroment (SGII) when you flash a new firmware?
(contact, calendar, bookmars i know will be synced back through google but i'm more intressted in my save data, appz and settings).I read Titanum backup does this but not sure if you can transfer from one firmware to another?
sorry for many questions but Android is a new world for me.
Kies firmware does not wipe data etc .
Odin update does not wipe data but depends upon the update .
Rule one RTFM
Rule two RTFM
Rule three Backup your EFS folder
Rule four have a copy of original firmware if possible
Rule five have a backup
Rule six read the FAQS on the post thats flashing current firmware custom rom or whatever .

Hi i bought a new samsung galaxy s2 the other day and immediately checked for updates ota. it said an update was available, so i downloaded it and clicked install. the phone rebooted and began updating but once it got to 14 percent it stopped, rebooted then said update was unsuccessful. So i connected to kies and it told me my phone wasnt compatible for updates via kies. any ideas?
Kies is useless, if you really want to update you can use odin yourself... up to you and voids warranty
Try uninstalling and reinstalling but too be honest, forget kies...
hmm. ok. any ideas on why the ota update stops at 14 percent? im on stock 2.3.4 and not rooted.
yes, because kies is rubbish....
settings - about phone - update... Over The Air update is probably not available lol ...
With odin you can flash stock updates... really simple, but get used to the phone and if you want to take the leap, its not difficult but do plenty of reading, it can a bit daunting initially...
Is there anything wrong with your phone or just hungry for the latest version?
OTA is not in use/working for many yet but is supposed to be working when ICS is released .

You said you're in the US? Then there isn't a stock ROM for the i9100 for your region. I'm in the US too. You should be able to use any from Intratech's official firmware thread just fine. I flashed from XWKE7 for the UK (2.3.3), that came with the phone, to XXKI3 for Poland (2.3.5). Haven't found a need to upgrade beyond that yet, but there are newer versions available.

As previously suggested, try other firmware. Forget Kies, its crap and only check for updates for your specific firmware, not elsewhere.
Try the link above i posted or http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9300here for newer releases.
Just follow the guide by Intratech (he also has some official firmware) for flashing with Odin. Could not be simpler. Just backup anything to PC before hand, and then follow instructions exactly.

i assume that with odin i can flash any of the firmwares and it dosent matter that my phone is locked to orange (well i believe it is). The phone itself has no orange branding or apps installed.
The other thing i am not sure about is which firmware i should use for a uk handset on orange. If i use a generic firmware will that cause problems with the radio's etc?
The other thing is how do i know what the latest is...i mean i might already have it on my device....it says i have 4.04 on it but are there various versions of this?
Sorry if it seems im being lazy about this but just want to be sure i am using the right one.

I believe so, should be same as SGS2. Phone lock should be "sim" lock not locked bootloader.
You can flash the modem or kernel as individual packages if need be.
In phone dialer, *#1234#
Ie. Firmware ending in LE7 is older than LE8
Don't forget to backup anything important to PC first. Best to factory reset first in recovery and then immediately boot into download mode to flash. Follow Intratech guide exactly and shouldn't be a problem.
Just make sure you flash any full package as .tar.md5 file. Zip won't work with Odin.

there are plenty of rooting video guides in the general section (to many to link just search) . Or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238 is probably the easiest way to root with the best guide.

Heard a few of my friends complaining that it did, but then again they probably where doing it wrong and had a USB connected or the phone turned on or something lol.
In the end I rooted it using the first method replied in this post, worked like a charm. Doesn't seem to have any kind of branded or locked bootloader from what I can tell, and root apps are working as they should.
A further question.. on my old iPhone, if I jailbroke it and update the firmware, it reversed the jailbreak.
I want to update the firmware on my GS3 to the latest, will it undo the root? Will I have to re-install root apps etc?
Or will the device stay rooted once i've upgrade?
Many thanks for your help, you guys/gals are a friendly bunch of clever-cloggs.
Here is a link to cwm flashable stock Roms, lg8 is what you want, you can flash these in recovery. I advise after flashing that you upgrade your modem to lh1 which is latest for uk and fixed some issues. Link also supplied

All matters regarding root etc, how to reset flash counter and return to stock for warranty can be found in i9300/General/stickies
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but whats the significance of this ROM?
Here's my device so far...
Stock ROM (never flashed anything custom) which I rooted using the above method.
I want to update to the latest firmware for the i9300, still stock though as I haven't found a feature in a custom ROM worth messing with it for me.
Then I was just going to re-root (if I needed to).
Does the ROM you posted mean that I won't have to re-root? And it will stay rooted?
And the modem thing... I don't understand.
I'm sorry to be a pain!
Thank you for your help,
the Rom listed are flashable through recovery, and there are a choice of odexed and deodexed stock Roms. Odex is the standard Rom, and Odex basically helps load apps a bit quicker, but has some drawbacks also. I could spend hours trying to fill you in but reading all the links and information I have supplied you with is the easier option
Unless you want to return the favor and spend the next few days explaining the mysteries of Windows to me, then I may consider some mutual spoon feeding
So.. to answer my question, does flashing through recov mean you do not have to re-root the device?
I wonder why the modem update is seperate? You would think they would include such things in the firmware update.
I'm a wizz on windows - fire away! haha.
I do genuinely appreciate your advice and help.
So.. to answer my question, does flashing through recov mean you do not have to re-root the device?
Yes if its not rooted .
Modems are part of firmware but can also be flashed as a separate item .
jje
JJE - My device is rooted though, which I explained
Also, the recov flashable firmware posted above lists this..
"Firmware info:
•Base Firmware: I9300XXBLG9 (4.0.4)
•Region Asia
•Country: Singapore
•Carrier: Unbranded
•Build Date: 30 July 2012
•Modem: DXLG2
•CSC: OLBBLG2
•Change List: 928452"
BLG8 has a version for Europe/UK.. but not BLG9...
Will I have to install the older one?
flash lg8 as I said, ...... lg9 is the Asian version. The modem was a separate ota update to remedy some problems.
I'm on uk Orange/t mobile so all is good
At op to your original Q... all you have to do is stay on your firmware unless you cant wait for the update to be released in the uk, then you can download the latest firmware either from xda or sammobile.com and flash with odin. Now if you stay on your firmware sometimes it will not update properly through kies because of root. In that case go on sammobile and download the firmware for your phone and flash with odin. You will lose root but you already have cf root on your computer so just root again.

Your phone should be able to receive OTA updates, Kies is for most users a pain in the xxx. Best way to update is to flash the updated rom through Odin (see item 2 and 3 in my signature). For custom roms see the developers thread, there are many good rom`s with all the stock features. My preference is what you see in my banner. First read up about rooting, flashing, CWM and stuff to avoid problems
Well, since you are asking in XDA, YES don't wait for OTA or Kies. Use odin to flash original firmware.
Root it as fast as you can
Try every custom roms until you found the one you like the most.
Happy flashing

Use the all in one toolkit and root then flash android revolution.

I appreciate all your answers. I'm not new to to flashing as my last phone was an S2 running wajk miui, just curious as to whether there was something wrong with my phone as it doesn't have the update in about device.
didn't want to root straight away as I'm not convinced I want to keep this phone yet, not impressed with it as I thought I'd be.

You say Kies does not work ???
No update well that begs the question is their an update for your phone .
No OTA in settings About Phone System Update that suggestions that the vendor has removed OTA updates .If so firmware updates are via Kies when the vendor decides to push them out .
