[Q] SD there but not there - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm running JT's vanilla Gingerbread. And after a day my SD card is not showing to be inserted thru gallery or if I try to download to. However I can play my music find ringtones on the card view pictures thru other apps and when I go to storage under setting it say card mounted and shows memory. Also something else weird is I can't delete anything from the card. Not really sure what's the problem and could use some advice Thx. (update) So two days now I've realized the problem has nothing to do with the SD card it self, everything is still there and I can do back ups from it as well as export contacts and flash in recovery. The problem seems to be somewhere in the rom. Gallery show a message "Sd unmount or not present" as well as I can't delete anything from the card thru the phone. Root explorer says it's deleted but it's not, every other way I try I get a "file can't be deleted" message. I can view pictures and video thru astro just not thru gallery. So I'm thinking this is not a wiped or fried Sd card issue but something with thew rom, I'll try flashing powerwashed rom and see if the problem continues and update.

If your running anything gingerbread expect your sd card to get wiped, do a backup asap.
Keep me Fascinated.

I am having the same problem

I would try backing up the card, then formatting. Not sure if it will work, but it's something to try.

I'm getting the mounting error on my internal SD card now.wont let me transfer files or music over without that dam mounting error. Tried everything.problem is I can't get the mountingfix to flash now using Rom Manager. Wont work.think its because its for e2 recovery and I'm now using e3 recovery. I am trying to flash the mountingfix.zip file by putting it onto my internal sd. Upon reboot into Android system recovery 3e, and choosing "reinstall packages."
I get the following problem:
E:failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Any fix for this issue please!

You can try pushing the file with adb and be sure of the directory, also it's case sensitive. And have you full formatted the sdcard to fat32?
I'm sorry, I know how it feels to lose someone close to you.

Just tried reformatting it through system recovering and also the SD card setting.didn't do fat32. And why do almost all the froyo Rom's have that mounting error. Even the T-Mobile froyo Rom has that issue. And yea i was close to my dad.

How would I reformat the internal SD card with fat32? That's the one I'm having issues with.the external SD card started work.so now i just need the internal one to work!
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Can't you fastboot flash the e2 recovery and try again? Or try another sdcard to see if the card is the problem or not. I know you're probably not that a rookie with this stuff but sometimes you can forget some simple solutions.

What kernel are you running? I had that same error when I ran eugene super kernel. Try a diff kernel. Also can you copy it.to your external then move it to your internal thru your phone. I had to do it that way on axura 2.1. Im sorry for loss bro. Ill keep you in my prayers.

First of all, I am very sorry for your loss.
I think that the problem may not be your sd. I think it's a problem with Clockwork. Check out this thread and see if it helps.
HOLY SH-T
this just happened to me too haha!
I was trying to get into ClockWork, by clicking reinstall packages, it said the same error as yours because i deleted the update.zip which you probably did...
Here's what i did to fix, on ROM Manager, i clicked INSTALL CLOCKWORK RECOVERY
and the update.zip appeared on my SD and it started working again.
Sorry about your dad.
Is this going to fix my internal SD card issue? How do I fix this issue without using the mountingfix.zip? I'm now using e3 recovery not e2 so wont let me install any update.zip file. Using Rom manager. Can't get clockwork recovery to work with my Stock Leaked Froyo Rom. So how do i fix this issue. Not looking to flash a new Rom just want my internal memory card to work right! Thanks a million

Q. SD Card damaged?

I installed CM7 recently and flashed CM7 OTB newest test 2.6.35.13 kernel. it's been great until a reboot I did just now...it says damaged sd card, reformat blah.
is there a way to revert it? I can't format my sd since I have important documents inside...
I had this problem too. I just pulled the sd card out and put it back in a few times and it started working again
Try it, can't hurt. Maybe I was just lucky though.

Oddly enough I have the same problem. No matter what my sd looks jacked. I mounted and saved to a pc but no matter what it won't save anymore and won't format.... Odd.
I'm terrified...I can't get into recovery and even if I do I have no access to files. Can someone tell me how to fix my sd card?...I need to recover my files inside.
Use a card reader and save your **** on a pc. If you can at this point.

[Q] Completely Clean Flash?

I'm wondering if anyone can walk me through completely cleaning out my phone before re-flashing Crazy 8. I read somewhere that you can format your internal and external sd cards to really clean things up. I've been having major slow downs and fc's and I want to try this to see if it helps. MY question is, do you format these cards and then go back to stock with ODIN or the other way around? Any tips would be most appreciated.
move critical stuff to pc
format internal/external
power down
odin to jfd
use the update.zip in my noob guide that lets you boot straight to cwr
flash rom
move any critical items back (ie titanium backup folder if you want your apps)

Awesome s15! Thanks so much. I will try this when I get home later. My internet has been down all day at work or I would've thanked you sooner!
Matty: I think you unmount the cards and then format them through the phone but I'll find out more later when I try it out.
You can format your internal/external SD card using either your phone or the computer. However, I think you should better use your phone to avoid any incompatibility issue.

Just boot into recovery, select mounts and storage. There is a format SD and format extSD choice. Always make sure you've removed anything critical to your PC first.

YAY! Formatting both SD Cards worked a charm. My phone is very speedy now and not having all the weird random re-boots and FC's! I can't buy anything from the market though, again, this is such a weird problem and I seem to be the only one having it.

Can't read sd card.

I am using twrp recovery. My phone won't go into disk drive when I plug it into my pc, but if I go into recovery and toggle sd card, my pc can read the files on my sd card.
I could sure use a little help. Or at least a push in the right direction.

That is a strange issue. If it were me, this is what I would try:
Use a card reader connected to your PC and copy all of the files over to your PC. Make sure you have your folder view set up to see hidden files.
Next, format the SD card. (you can use this free program "SD Formatter" https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/) or just use your normal formatting process.
After the card is formatted put it back in the phone and see if it can read the card. If it can, then copy the files you backed up on your PC back to the card.
If it can still read the card after putting everything back on, you're golden. If it can't, then there is some app or file on the card causing the problem.
Good luck and let us know what you find.
thanks for the advice mvansomeren. worked like a charm. i have no idea what happened. i changed a prl file rebooted, was too slow so i did the ##775# and i saw that i couldn't find my old prl file. i went to check for the file and couldn't find my astro. lol. then i noticed that the phone wasn't reading the card. well, if it happens again i'll know what to do. thanks again.

Thanks for letting us know how it worked out. I'm discovering that the SD card is the root of a lot of strange issues. I'm not sure if data is getting corrupted somehow or the quality of the cards is questionable but now, whenever I have a weird issue with the phone, the first thing I do is pull out the SD card and see how the phone behaves without it. If the phone returns to normal, I know its something to do with the SD card.

[Q] Clockworkmod won't flash ROM: "can't mount emmc"

I just returned my phone to stock using ODIN and Entropy's method. I was previously running SHOStock3v.1.3.5 and was having problems creating a viable backup via CWM; not sure why, I've backed up many times before. What changed recently is that I set the default backup format to "TAR" from "DUP" as mentioned here. After that, my backups went from around 17MB to 1.6GB. At some point, possibly even with that first backup, the process would hang while generating the .md5. I left it for about 1.5 hours one time and still it wouldn't finish; I got around this by holding the power button to reboot. I reset the default format back to "DUP" and my backup size went back to about 17MB, but still wouldn't finish generating the .md5. All of these backups seemed to be causing System Media Storage some severe heartburn, filling up the internal memory. Deleting the backups solved this issue, but I was left with a phone that I could not backup.
Finally, this morning I (regrettably) used ROM Manager to try backing up, not having seen the numerous posts about never using ROM Manager. So my phone became a brick, stuck in a bootloop at the Samsung logo. So now I'm at the point where I've returned the phone to stock w/root as mentioned above. I've also reflashed recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.3-galaxys2att.tar via ODIN. BUT, when I try to flash a new ROM I get an error message saying "E:Can't mount /emmc/".
I've looked at some similar threads like this one and this one, but they don't seem to contain the answers I need. I am about to attempt to wipe the sdcard using the dialer code *2767*3855# found in this post. Before I do that I want to verify that there isn't something less drastic that I could try first. Anybody know what's going on?
Eh sounds like you may have gotten the emmc brick.

Yuck. I did some research on that and it sounds mostly like what I've got (I have the ICS kernel - version 2.6.35.7). The difference between my situation and the one in a post I found is that my phone boots and acts normal, for the most part. I ran GotBrickbug? v1.2 and it verified that my eMMC chip is known to have the bug. I found a discussion thread for the Epic 4G on the subject which points to this fix, but it seems to be for those whose phones are really bricked... mine is not, do you have any suggestions on what I might try?
Well, the problem that caused it was in Samsung kernel source for ICS. Flash a custom kernel known not to have it and see what you get afterwards. Also, DO NOT do any memory wipes while on the stock kernel because then you will for sure get the bug, that's what causes it.

I resolved my issue, though it wasn't what I thought out was. For some reason when I selected "Choose zip from internal sdcard", CWM was trying to access the external sdcard, which I had pulled. The opposite was true as well. If my external card was in its slot I would have realized the switch around right away. My phone its back in business, I now have SHOstock3 installed and it's running just fine. Thanks for the help, really glad my emmc wasn't mangled!

Same to my Phone
So if want to solve this problem, you must have one external SD card which conten Zip file. Right?

Not necessarily. You can put the zip file on the internal card, then you have to choose external card from within CWM. You may have to have an external card installed for that option to show up though. Or, if you put the zip on the external card, then you choose internal in CWM.
