I spent the last few weeks trouble shooting why my phone started to have random lockups/reboots with a growing frequencey. I have through process of elimination found that my external 32gb sd card seems to be the culprit. I used it for 1 week and each day I had my phone reboot itself 5-8 times and randomly lockup while using apps to the point I had to do a battery pull. I then went all of last week and only had to restart my phone 1 time by battery pull *new app froze, found it to be poorly designed* and no random reboots on its own.
I spent last night backing up all the data on my sd card. I kept movies/music/pictures on it but did not run any apps off of the card. I told windows to format it fat32 and then test the card and it said it found no problems. I copied the videos and such back over to the card then installed it. Within 1 hour the phone had already frozen up and rebooted itself.
For reference I am currently running Trigger 3.2 Final with KB5. I have also tried with Project V *forget exact version* and with CM7. All produce the same issue.
If you can think of something else I could try I would be most grateful. I am out of ideas. Have any of you ever experienced something like this?
what brand & class is the SD card?
i saw a deal at target last weekend... $8 for a dane-elec brand 8gb class 4 microSD card at target
i bought it for my gf so she could double the capacity of her current 8gb sandisk class 2 card that she had in her nexus one.
i copied everything over to the new card and after 10 minutes her phone started acting weird. as soon as the screen timed out, it would not come back on. you could operate the phone if you guessed where the buttons were on the black screen; even answer calls!
but you could not get the screen to come back on unless you rebooted and kept it awake.
i thought it was funny that she never had issues until immediately after i put the new card in, so i powered the phone off and swapped the old one back in.
no problems for a whole day. i put the new card back in the next day and it started messing up again.
so we returned the dane-elec and i snagged a kingston 8gb class 4 and tried again. no problems.
i know hers is an N1 but i figured it could be related. good luck!
My card is a Sandisk 32gb Class 4
+24 Hour Bump back up to page 1. Still cant figure this one out.
Have you also formatted the internal and re-installed the rom?
My girlfriends phone was running Axura for like 5 months and started having issues fc/freeze/reboot. I did everything and tried different rom's and kernels still same problems. Formatted internal SD and reinstalled Axura and she's been good since May.
Back everything. Pull the titanium folder. When you reinstall just copy everything back and you should be good. Also check out Br1ck'ds Ginger Zen thread second or third post for ultra cleaning steps.

Had the same issue on project v. Random soft boots and freezes. Thought it was the rom. Tried a few things but noticed the external scanning was unusually long. Took out the card and reformat it. Evrything good again.

Yeah I have tried formatting both through phone and pc no noticible difference. It is the external card causing issues not internal. I could try to format internal but when I installed trigger last it was from a clean print to stock format reroot etc. Process. Not sure if that would be the same more or less.

Let me start out by saying that I have searched for any threads that have covered this, and have come up empty.
This has happened twice to me in the last two months. Running task650's V.9, which is an awesome ROM. I've got a Lexar Class 10 32gb card. Twice in two months have I booted up and the media scanner would show a broken sd card notice. I tried booting the phone without the card, and then re-installed the card. Same notice of bad sd card on boot.
At this point I took the card and stuck it in a laptop, which generated a "can not open due to corrupt or unreadable file" and "reformat drive" or something like that. I was forced to format, losing photos, vids, and TiBu folder. I synced to Dropbox and got the backup folder re-installed.
Any ideas about what could have corrupted the card? I suppose the card could be damaged. I paid good bucks, as it is not a low end card. Replace the card? Any guidance would be appreciated.
I have a Lexar Class 10 32GB card. Same issue, after first time reformatted and same thing happened a week or two later.
I did an RMA with Lexar, think there is a 1 year warranty. Got a new card, been working fine the past several months.
Ok. Thanks for the input. I've got a Kingston Class 10 on the way.
I was hoping it wasn't in the phone hardware.
Thanks, I just reminded myself to do a backup of that card itself to my PC.
Sorry to hear about your problem though.

Yeah, I lost some New Years day photos and vids with my wife. I'll NEVER find her in that good of a mood again!
It makes me wonder about my decision to place my TiBu folder on the external card, along with Nandroid backups. True, it syncs to Drop Box for TiBu but do I need the extra headache of wondering if my card is going to get smoked again? I suppose I should be backing it all up to pc..
I'm not sure but it seems to be a problem with the phone and class 10 cards.
My first one was a 16gb class 10 micro sd that one day just decided to stop working (lasted a month or so). Couldn't access it via the phone or PC.
So I went out and got a 32gb class 10 and after a month or so again it stopped working
Knowing this I refused to buy a class 10 card again. I went to Walmart and got the cheapest 32gb micro sd (Sandisk class 4) and so far so good. no problems at all
Lost everything I had too on the first 2 cards so learned the hard way to do backups to my PC.
Not the class, it's probably the brand. Some brands have terrible quality control, especially if you go for a cheaper one. I have one from Amazon Basic and it works just fine. My brother uses one from SanDisk with zero problem.
Class 10 is also newer. The technology to manufacture these is not that old. I suspect some manufacturers still need to refine their process.

Got a similar problem here.
Transcend Class 10 32GB Card
Works in PC, HTC Desire - no probs.
Put in Galaxy S2, it starts Media Scanning, a few seconds later reports SD Card Damaged, requires formatting.
It's right - take it back out (again, umpteenth time!), put it in PC or HTC - card is "damaged". (Nothing permanent, can reformat.)
Samsung support claim to not know anything - mind you they "play dumb" about the camera "pink spot" issue, until you challenge them to get real...
Oh, dear!

Sounds like a brand issue, but have you ever tried checking the drive for errors?
Given that even your PC gives you a "damaged" message, it may not work. Once inserted, go to "My Computer," get to properties, and check for errors (enable the "automatically fix file system errors" option). In the past, this has corrected "corrupted" SD cards for me.

The only corruptions I have experienced on this phone were when using MTP to transfer files from the PC. Since I stopped using MTP and use only USB Storage mounting, I have not had any more problems.
I've actually experienced this twice. Both times flashing to AOKP. I'm not blaming AOKP but just saying. The first time even my PC wouldn't read it and it needed to be reformatted. The second time my pc could read it and after nandroiding back to shostock2 it was fine.

Please note I have no custom kernel or ICS, my phone is stock.
I bought a SanDisk Mobile Ultra 64GB microSDXC Class 6 back in April. The card installed fine and everything was great until last week when I turned off the phone which I have always done with my phones every other day just to let it reset everything. The phone kept looping and would get an error msg saying adroid process kept failing. I tried turing it off and on agaid several times same effect. Finally after waiting about 5 minutes and turning it on again it came on and worked. Well the damn thing did it again this morning after freezing up on installing a game last night. It kept looping and looping. Screen unresponsive everytime and would not get a data connection. Only thing custom I had on this phone is widget locker. I tried unistalling that one time when it let me access before it looped again and that didn't work. So I decided to try taking out my card. Well that did it and the phone is working fine now. Has anyone else had this issue? It is a problem it seems when the phone trys to scan the Micro sd card that this starts. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like your card went bad. I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago. Just had to buy a new one and rma the bad one.

Would my computer still be able to read and write to the card if it was the card that was bad? I was able to pull and delete my photo's off the card when I stuck it in my PC's Micro SD slot. I am totally new with Android. I have always had Iphones.
Some times yes your computer can still read it but for a short time. Don't think a computer is as picky as your phone. Took them almost 4 weeks to send me a new card. I had already bought a new one. So got a backup.

Hi ,
My External SD card on galaxy s3 i9300 international version .... shows up on the notifation bar that Sd card removed unexpectedly.... this happens evry 10 mins or 15 mins....
Help appriciated
Have got the exact same issue and drains the battery quicker as it has to keep on rescanning the SD card...I have reformatted the card and it still doesn't help...did not have this issue until last week and don't know what happened for the SD card to keep on being removed every 10-15mins..I have realized that every time I wake the phone up I see the card icon in the status bar for a second.. Sadly I have read that this is a common issue and it eventually can fry the card and make it useless so I have decided to remove it and not use a SD card(main reason I got the phone was for this reason)...since then my battery has been amazing as the media scanner is not constantly running..so far no one seems to have a reason why this suddenly happens as I have not had an issue since I got the s3 which was over 6 months ago and out of nowhere this issue occured..I hope that this may be an software issue which can be fixed in the future or hopefully someone in xda can either find out whats the issue or find a fix till then I will keep my 32 GB sandisk card safe.

Do you use a Sandisk 32GB card by any chance?
I had these same issues, which went away once I changed to samsung cards.
If you can, return the card for replacement, as cards made after december 2012 dont have this issue anymore.
cheers
Interesting, i have exactly the same issue since january 1th. It worked for about a month without any problems (bought it late november).
Now this is killing me how it behaves every 5min. I have reset the phone, updated the phone, formatted the sd-card.. nothing helps.
So if i return my sandisk 32gb, should i ask for a new sandisk or go with the samsung?

Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying, this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the media scanning process.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card, and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:

I've seen my 64Gb Sandisk card auto unmount and remount itself a couple of times today, have seen it once before. Again was caining the battery on the phone with the media process rescanning it.
Thanks for the app I've installed it to monitor this from now on, to see if its potentially a faulty card.

This app is really great, proves the issue. Like others, I have this problem with a Sandisk Ultra 32gb. I tried popping in an old 4gb card (forget the manufacturer) and had no issues.
Saw somebody else suggesting that the Franco kernel fixed this issue, and sure enough it seemed to have cured it for me for a few weeks, but it's just started again today - your app showed unmounts/ejects happening every couple of minutes, so I've now submitted a request to Sandisk to return the card.
Hi,
Over the last week, I've had two SD cards die on me:
The first card I've had since I got my i9300 S3 (13 months). Prior to last week, it worked flawlessly (KomputerBay 32GB class 6). Then suddenly after rebooting I see an SD card damaged error. After trying chkdsk and fsck it looks like the card is certainly damaged but was able to recover some of the files.
Thinking it was just bad luck and the card dying, I purchased a 32gb class 10 Lexar card brand new. In the meantime, I used a 4GB Samsung SD card that came with the S3 for approximately 5 days and it worked fine with no errors or corruption.
With the new card, I copied over all my files, music etc. After an overnight using the phone, some calling etc. I rebooted the phone only to get the same error. Windows didn't even recognise the card let alone recover it. fsck likewise. Did a full format again and restored some files from original backup, it's been less than 24 hours and so far so good but I am not ready to relax just yet.
I'm really baffled as to what could be causing it as the card seems only to fail after a reboot. Prior to then, the card displays as mounted in system settings and files are accessible. The only other strange thing I've noticed is that when playing music/podcasts and turning off the screen the playback jitters for a moment or two before returning to normal. This started quite recently. I'm using UltimaROM 13.0 at the moment with Boeffla kernel. Have disabled all SD related optimisations and have no CPU or GPU overclocking or undervolting. I've been using Ultima for months with no major config changes recently.
I'm at the point now where I am almost scared to reboot! Last time I rebooted I unmounted the SD just in case. The only other possible difference in behaviour is that as I was travelling I had my phone on charge all night and although I can't be 100% sure rebooted with the phone charging (though again, its not the first time I've rebooted while charging). I've googled this far and wide and most SD related issues seem to be caused by the card randomly unmounting. I've never seen this in my instance.
Any ideas on what this might be or what I could do to troubleshoot further? I don't want to restore to stock, unroot, reset counters etc. and return to Samsung unless I can be at least reasonably confident its a hardware issue.
Thanks,

Do you mean http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1906058 ? If so, yes though the key difference for me is that my card doesn't seem to randomly unmount like most reports indicate. Also, it's very recent. Don't also see any possible solutions in there unless I'm missing something?
So I am having a problem where my Sandisk 32GB MicroSD card is getting dismounted from the phone. It gives me an error message like "SD card has been removed. Please use the Safely Eject SD card option to prevent data loss" or something like that. Then, it finds the card and runs the media scan, which renders my card useless for that time period. The screen also turns on for a minute or so during this time. Then it stays mounted for maybe up until 5 minutes before starting over again.
This absolutely rapes my battery, taking it from a full charge to dead battery in less than two hours. I thought maybe the SD card was going bad even though it's fairly new, so I took it out and tried it on my old Motorola smartphone, and it works fine and never dismounts. So I thought perhaps it's something with my phone, so I tried an older 8GB micro SD, and it works fine without dismounting at all.
Some info. Phone is running stock 4.0.4 with root and unlocked bootloader. The 32GB SD card worked fine for maybe 3 months until this problem suddenly started. Any ideas?

I went through four RMA replacement 64gb class 10 SanDisk cards, ate the $90 loss and spent $80 on the Samsung equivalent. It's faster and I have had zero problems with it. However, I used SanDisk cards for nearly a decade before those without any problems.
