One of the things I really appreciate about my EVO is the strength of the GPS when using Google Navigate - especially after my dismal experience with the Samsung Moment.
Although I've seen mostly positive reviews about call quality, signal strength, processor speed, etc., I haven't seen anyone on the forum comment about the Photon's GPS. Can any of you former EVO users comment on how the Photon's GPS compares to the EVO?
Thanks,
Flipper

I fired it up for the first time the other evening, to get directions somewhere. It got lock in under 30 seconds, which is satisfactory for me. My Evo was inconsistent and definitely took much (with stock drivers).
coming from the Vibrant here and anything is better then what I had. But as far as I can tell GPS locks on and really sticks. It is accurate to as it places me in my house and fallows when I walk around outside.
actually got a lock in my office building through the roof once, but never watched to see if it would wonder.
The gps is very fast to lock on and solid. My evo 3d before the photon was horrendous, wouldn't ever get a accurate reading inside and even outside was bad. My original evo was very good as well, both the evo 4g and photon will get a very accurate reading inside almost instantly and even follows me around when i walk.

My Evo4G was also excellent, but the MoPho is even better. It bested my Evo in all tests I've run.
Gps works great here too! Coming from the OG I noticed that lock ons are faster. Only issue is while in the car dock, and selecting my location the image loads in sections...its kind of crappy but I don't think its a gps issue rather a software issue.

My Photon GPS is horrible, especially compared to my EVO. If I'm driving and put the phone in my lap it looses signal until I hold it up to the windshield or slide back the sunroof cover. My EVO rarely lost the signal once it acquired a lock.

Well, based on everyone else's experiences and their posts on this forum and the android forum, it sounds like you may have a bad phone. If I were you, I'd probably bring it in and have someone at Sprint look at it.

I completely agree, I logged on just now to create a post about this exact thing, not only that I can put in an address and it works great. Then on to the next addresses and it won't even lock, just sits there. I am in sales and I bet no one on these forums uses navigation more than I do. On the photon it just sucks, period. One of the many reasons I am waiting for root. I absolutely love this phone, but the gps sucks.
If someone could post some tweaks maybe that would be great because I'm not trying to do what motorola wants us to do and just reboot every time.
Also, it isn't the phone, I have had two do this same exact thing, and my buddy at sprint let me use his for a few and his ended up doing the same thing.
I think most of the people commenting here have used it maybe twice.

I use my GPS whenever I'm in the car with Trapster and I also use Foursquare and the Photon has been rock solid. My Epic was a pain in the butt trying to rely on any kind of a quick GPS lock and with the Photon it just works whenever I need it. Now when I open Foursquare and go to check in someplace my list is up to date even when I'm in an area I've never been to without having to keep refreshing.

for the guy having problems, could it be you are in some type of dead zone? Or maybe its solar flares? I have not tried much but did want to add that for those testing in your home don't forget to turn off the location setting. The one that will use wifi and/or cell towers to triangulate your location.
My GPS does not work well either. It has been taking about 10 seconds to get a signal, and seems to always have a 1-2 second delay. I had one day I had to turn the phone off and back on to get a signal. I have tried the newest release and am getting the same thing. My EVO got a lock instantly and never had any delays. Even my old Touch Pro had faster GPS locks.

I think you should return the phone because its obviously defective. I'm returning mine because when the phone is shutdown it doesn't startup immediately when I press the power button. It actually takes a minute before I can use it.
Seriously, mine gets a lock in about 10 seconds inside the house while my Evo took about 15 seconds. When I traveled with the Evo and I turn it on in a new city, it could take 30 seconds to lock. I've not traveled with the mopho yet. 10 seconds to get a signal is nothing to complain about.
I have had no issues with my GPS, gets a lock quickly and never loses the signal afterwards. I've used it probably about a dozen times since I've gotten the phone a week ago and hae pretty much exclusively used the Telenav App and not really tried Google Nav.
My GPS is hit and miss
Comparing with my EVO 4G, this Photon GPS is not better. My EVO 4G performed very well. This photon may loose signal during driving in the tunnel but could acquire signal quick enough after leaving the tunnel. I had to disable and enable GPS and it locked right away. It happened several times. Not sure if worth to bring back to store.

I have had the captivate for over a year now and have been plagued with terrible gps performance.
Anyhow I am considering an upgrade to the sgs2. But before I upgrade I'd like to know how the performance is on the sgs2's gps. I'm sure samsung improved the gps for this model, but I was hoping to confirm it here.
Thanks

I also had a captivate for a year. I never had too big of issues with it. It always got a lock ... eventually. The GPS on the SGS II is definately better, but to me still feels like its slow to get a lock. My wife's iPhone 3GS locks faster than my SGS II.
You have 30 days up decide if you want you keep it. I don't think it will be possible for this phone to disappoint you.

A simple search would have shown a dozen or so threads on GPS performance. They all say the same thing.
the GPS on this phone is eons better than the captivate. On a 3 hour trip from NY to PA, it dropped the signal once. I had to actually reboot the phone to get the GPS to pick up again but it was fine after that. That was the first time I had to reboot to get the GPS to work. Otherwise, its fine.
I get very fast locks ... Even in my house

OK. So it gets fast locks which is good but the real acid test is navigation. And not on big straight highways but on surface streets with lots of turns. Does it do this well? Does it need to sit in line of sight to the sky in your car (i.e. on the dashboard) to work or can you drop it in a cup holder and have it track you accurately? GPS was the Achilles heel of the Captivate. I nearly threw mine out the window several times. This was the Captivate experience:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZXM_g3mqew
we all agree, GPS on the captivate was not good, although the model i got was OK but still took some time to get a lock and forget about starting the cappy GPS from a moving vehicle.
BUT - the GPS on the SGS2 is SICK !
Samsung went all out to make it a non issue. Will be interested what they did this time - did they use a better chip from a better maker or what, maybe soon we will know.
I had an unlocked vibrant for awhile and similarly to the captivate, the gospel was spotty.
The GS2 has substantially better gps. I haven't used it consistently to give you a full impression about it;however, it seems to lock and track well from past experience. My Atrix has excellent gps as well.

It was not just the us variants of the sgs that had issues the i9000 phones had crappy gps, and even my launch captivate had decent but nothing like my i777 sgs2. Not as quick of a GPS lock as the OG Evo, but it's still faster than any Samsung device.
Less than 15 seconds for GPS lock still.
Does it lock while moving? My EVO 3d had a hard time locking while moving quite often...
GPS is good, now that I have a working EvoLTE. My first unit was not getting me accurate readings and worst of all, Google Maps would freeze and force close! Super annoying. After 2.5 hours of arguing with Sprint over the phone, and about 3 days later Sprint got me a new and seemingly working device.
GPS is, of course, faster than the OG Evo.
I still think, like most new Android devices that come out, that Google needs to roll out an update that addresses the EvoLTE, but I'm sure Google will send out more updates soon. A Sprint store manager said that when the OG Evo first came out he noticed that there were Google Maps issues that were resolved over updates.
What hardware version do you have? What versions are currently being sold by Sprint? Any problems with yours?

I'm one of those people. I'm on my second 0003, my data speeds are still horrible, my phone has asked me 4-5 times today to set my time zone, and I still periodically get a roaming warning when trying to make calls from my house even though I have an Airave. I'm sticking with it though, I just hope my issues get resolved after and update or 2. Those issues are annoying but this phone is too good in every other way for me to let it go.

Turn off the automatic time zone under settings-->time and date. It stops the problem immediately. I had the same issue. No biggie now.

Anybody else notice that when it roams and asks you to set the timezone, that the central timezone uses Central America time rather Central Daylight Time as an option? You can go into the time settings as mentioned by PsiPhiDan to set it correctly, but things will be messed up for half the year if you use the default menu popout selections. Not sure if this is an ICS or Sense thing.

Don't know what it was but there must have been something specific that caused that. I had that time zone thing several times that one day but I haven't seen it since. Just as with just about everything, the software on this phone seems a bit buggy. I'm sure they'll get it ironed out soon. I could say that I wish they'd get all the bugs worked out before release but that would delay my precious.
Just returned from taking care of my bill at a corporate sprint store in Detroit Michigan area, and brought up concerns about issues since jb was released. Before I was able to tell my personal issues since the update the couple techs that were at the front door greeting/mingling with customers, told me they have been notified that a patch is being worked on for the Bluetooth, navigation, proximity sensor, wifi and various glitches others have been reporting. This was all said before I even mentioned those issues that myself and others on this forum have brought up. They've even been instructed to stop doing replacement handsets for people with the issues. So to me it sounds like the issues have been noticed/verified finally and HTC/sprint may be releasing something soon. Sounds legit considering the tech's themselves named off the issues and seemed to know a bit about the problems without me saying anything. Figured I'd pass on this tidbit of info and hopefully it becomes a reality.
Update 01/11 called HTC and they have a bulletin that's been sent out that proximity sensor was specifically being worked on (news for stock users at least)..the nav issue the guy said wasn't a for sure thing because it might be a google dropping the ball thing/capatability issue

I have to flash back to an ics rom then back to jelly bean while wiping as little as possible just to get mhl-hdmi adapter to work. And sometimes at that. Most of the time I have to reset the phone 3 times, unplug, plug in cable to phone. It just blows balls! I am about to just go back to ics and stay there. Jelly bean or at least this iteration of it sucks. Not to mention the worse battery life? Why are we excited about jb anyway? It looks good and sounds nice, but it is just like its abbreviation (jb) jailbait!
Does anyone else agree with me or are you all on the google strain of bud? Here's my list of issues over ics: Battery hog! Mhl-hdmi previously mentioned, New usb connection manager screwed my car audio. Have to update busybox everytime I reset just so root explorer displays remaining space in sd card.
I will quit my rant now though I guess. No one at sprint or htc or most the people here even give a rats **** about these issues because i obviously must be a noob who cant wipe and flash a rom properly or my phone has issues so I must be retarded or something. Tired of those attitudes on xda. But thats another topic. Good day to u all!
I updated to JB and I don't have any of the issues you are talking about. After hearing some of your experiences I think I will wait until a patch comes out to update my wife's phone.
I like JB on this phone. Google now is a welcome feature. Initially I experienced shorter battery life, but after adjusting the settings in Google Now I would say my battery life went back to normal or possibly even better than before.
The one thing I don't like about JB is the in scrolling background, but all the pluses more than make up for it.

I turned off any cards that would frequently update.
Ex. Traffic, weather and nearby places
I can't say for sure that these consume extra battery, but ever since adjusting the settings my battery has been performing well.
It's currently at 50% after 12h 36m off the charger with medium use.
I wish they would just fix this dam Proximity Sensor. I hate my calls hanging up when it touches my face and how it wont show the screen when I wish to hang up.
The CM10 proximity fix woked for me.
[MOD] [CM10] Proximity Sensor Fix
I tested using Proximity Sensor Finder before and after. Before nothing happened, after it went from 9 to 0 when covered.
I've seen all those issues the MeanBean Thread.
All 4.1 JB Devices Broke Bluetooth Voice Dial. As far I know only 4.2 fixes it.
I'd be really impressed if Sprint released 4.2 let alone any update.
I posted a [MOD] in the development section to get Cyberon to be the Default when you click the bluetooth button and it works great, better than it ever has and no longer relies on the Network. And I'm nolonger forced to keep my contacts in gmail. I prefer keep them only in my work's ExchangeMail account.
Nav has worked for me so far but I have not used it too heavily.
As far as Bluetooth Reliability during a Call JB is MUCH better. ICS would drop bluetooth headset as I passed WIFI HotSpots.
WIFI has been an issue on this device since day 1. JB release doesn't seem much better or worse, but it does seem different, but usable for me. I've had it get stuck once and would not let go of WIFI as I drove away, which jams the whole phone up until you shut WIFI off.
The Proximity Sensor seems to be a calibration issue. My guess is the OTA update might have accindentally wiped each devices calibration or something. You can recalibrate it. The default cal works for people. I have not had the issue or it's not a big enough issue for me to care.
Well I can verify after getting a couple refurbs because of the jb updates/roms having nav crashes (first refurb to replace my new launch date phone being a launch date activated one with nav crashes and faulty strip in touchscreen), I finally have one that the navigation works flawlessly on so far with several jb Roms I tried....the refurb date on this phone was in December with no usage/data etc....and I was the first to activate the phone (maybe damaged casing on phone etc and never was sold)...so the pattern of newer built elte's seems to be a pattern...at least for me...it was a battle to get a working phone but paid off in the end...

Stock with Goodies 2.08. Never has been a problem until today. I have recently upgraded to the latest firmware and radios, but had to downgrade in order to run this particular ROM, which I can't part with. I will try these things you mention.
Still experiencing this issue.
I have since upgraded to the latest firmware.
Any suggestions on trouble shooting for what is causing this or possible tests, fixes, anything!? :silly:
Edit: After using the apps mentioned above, the issue is still present and I notice no fix whatsoever.
Any ideas of that the values are supposed to be? That way I can troubleshoot if I have an issue.
Where are you when you are trying to pick up the GPS signal? A lot of factors play into getting a good GPS signal. How's the weather? Do you have cloud cover or is it clear? Are you inside or outside, near a window?
You can try an app called GPS test to check out your GPS signal. It will give you an indication of how well (or bad) of a signal you are picking up.
Here are two screenshots using my phone. The first is inside about 10 ft away from any windows. The second is about 3 ft from the window. You can see the difference it makes the further you go into a building.

I don't know what could've caused this except where I downgraded firmwares, to flash an old Rom. Which I said I'm running the latest currently. But nothing else is acting whacky at all. Or unless it's just a defective evo?

Oh, and both app captures were from outside under a clear sky.

I'm thinking you should be pulling in a better signal if you were outside on a clear day. I believe you should be pulling in 10 ft or better accuracy on a clear day.
Have you tried removing the rear cover and checking the connections to the cover? If this doesn't help, you may have a defective unit.

What're my options then with an s-off'd device?
