Sprint let me go ETF free - HTC EVO 3D

After a few different phones, reporting poor service, receiving an Airave (my house being one of the only places I get a decent speed at)...I decided today to call and complain about the service again, average 3g speeds here are 10-125kb and some places calls can't even be made (i live 45 min south of boston).
Apparently, the usage has gone up, so the already weak service here is far worse then it used to be. For the first time a tech support guy actually gave some legit information back to me. Said signal here ranged from fair to roaming.. and sent me to retention.
I moved my wife and I from T-Mobile/AT&T, payed $260 in ETF.. so this BLOWS, I love my EVO 3D, but the service is too poor to justify paying the bill.
Anyways, the point to my post.. if your service is super awful like mine, and you are new.. you may have a way out if you can't deal with awful service for the next 2 years.
Guess I'll be Ebaying the phones and waiting for the SGS2 or something... lames - please don't pm me about buying the phones, we're keeping them until the end of the month, and I probably don't trust you

I don't see how your getting a bad signal with an airave in the house. I got one and I have full bars everywhere in my 4 bedroom home. I start dropping bars about 50 ft from the house. If you have a airave then you have internet obviously, invest in a good wireless N router and your phone will be stupid fast on wifi.

Oh my house is great, but that is about it.
I fixed my first post... the issue isn't at my house.

Oh ok. I know what your sayin now. T-mobile is getting the evo 3d so its a win win for you.

I thought it was going to Canada or something, when is that supposed to come out? I just left T-Mobile after 7 years or something haha

http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_evo_3d_with_tmobile_usa_3g_band_passes_fcc_testing-news-2837.php

Cool, thanks. From the way I took it, I had until 9/7 to port my number. So all together right now I'm kinda in a bad spot, I'm not buying a phone I don't want. I sold my old phone, so I'll prob be crying for a month with a G1 in my hand until something worth buying comes out

G1 was an awsome phone, Im pretty sure its got gingerbread too lol. Well good luck to ya, I know if you sign a two year contract and already have a phone you can save your "upgrade" for the phone you want when it drops.

T mobile isn't getting the EVO,,that was for Canada so they reported
spreading the infection in 3D

Wait, is your evo 3d available for purchase? No need to ebay it, you have a potential buyer right here. I'm in the market for one. Send me a PM and let's discuss!

Did you read my link? I don't think the FCC and T-mobile USA have anything to do with Canada.

From a Sprint Tech
the reason why you still have poor data tx/rx rates even with an air rve is because the airraves do not support data, only voice and text. they are designed basically to do your calls/text via VIOP, and it transmits 1x cdma service(which does no web). you cant use the airrave with out good high speed internet, and you can use your wifi on the phone(assuming you have a wireless router) to make up the for the low data speeds. If you dont have a wireless router, you can go buy one for 35-110 bucks and that would resolve your issues.

I understand where the op is coming from, he said the airave works, its just his general area sprint is lacking in coverage. Im in somewhat in the same boat as him, but I plan on moving next year to a 4g area so I'm just going to hang in there, I like sprint phones and their unlimited plans.
Im also using an airave and wifi, and most places I go have wifi. So I get by.

I think I made it clear in my OP that the service in my area sucks, exceptionally bad.. except for at my house, where I have an airave (airvana actually) and my wireless n router
And maybe one or two other spots have a decent connection, but it'll be a mb of service 1 block, and the next it is 125kb
I'm not at fault for the poor signal which is why Sprint is allowing me to leave without an ETF

I don't blame you if you are moving to a 4g area, I'm actually moving at the end of the month, to the next city over, which has even worse coverage lol. Funny thing is, it isn't like I'm out in some obscure area either...
In general I think Sprint has over looked my area, Providence, RI has ****ty 3g/4g too, very mediocre .. though that is 40 min from me anyways.. sucks, at least I'm not a data hog so not having unlimited won't be an issue most of the time for me.

Im moving north of Atlanta, 4g and 3g are roaring fast there plus its civilization, ill just have to get used to stoplights and traffic again lol.
I was in the far west suburbs of Chicago a few months ago and the sprint and wimax data was painfully slow, almost unusable, So some populated areas are better than others.

This area was gigantic for Nextel years ago, we have like 4-6 Sprint stores within a 5-10 min drive of some sorts here.. its kind of amazing that the service here is so lacking. **** they just opened up a new Sprint store (2nd of the city) where I'm moving too.. and the house I'm buying hardly has even a bar outside of it.
T-Mobile I had 1-1.4 mb dl , and good voice just about everywhere and my CR-48 has comparable data speeds at least with the free Verizon coverage. My wife had a 3GS (I finally converted her with the EVO 3D!) which was probably slightly under Tmobile/Verizon.... I just don't think Sprint has enough juice in this area to cover all the people who got on the Evo/Evo 3D in the past year.
New Bedford isn't exactly in the middle of no where.. I'm moving across the bridge..

The sucks man well you have a change to try another carrier now, if verizon got lte where you live you should try then out, I have them too and speeds are amazing, my 3G varies usually I get almost a mb/s and sometimes 300kb/s but is not as often as before

Sprint Network

Sprint is really disappointing me. I've been through MetroPCS and Virgin Mobile which are prepaid and I was paying 40 a month unlimited everything and the speeds, and coverage are equal to Sprint and even better.. virgin mobile is running off of sprints towers and I was getting AMAZING speed, about 2 mbs all the time and peaked at 2.4 mbs.
Sprint has been in the game for a LONG time, but they must not know what they are doing or need a new CEO. Look at ATT, T-Mobile, and Verizon.. they are years ahead of Sprint..
I feel like im paying 100$ a month for just being able to use a badass phone that prepaid companies dont offer. I got better support/service using prepaid.. its sad.
today in school, my friend has his ATT Iphone 4s out and did a speedtest.. he was pulling off 5.5mbs!. I couldnt even start mine because i was on roaming with 0 bars... he had like 4/5 bars.. wtf... makes me extremely jealous
Anyone have any idea what could be behind the issues with Sprint and why things havent improved in the past 2 years?
Send them a message by canceling service and flashing your device to work on Metro.
If you don't tell Sprint (with your wallet) that there's something wrong, they will never hear your complaints.
Sprint has improved for me in the past 2 years. I'm in Chicago.

5.5mbs!? Man, he's gonna reach his cap in like 4.2 days of use. That's the plus with using Sprint, you can use your phone the whole month without having to worry about caps because... 1. They don't cap. 2. Even if they did, you still wouldn't hit it when you're pulling 56kbs.

Yes when I saw it my jaw dropped and yes your 100% right, lmao. I hope one day we will have speeds near this .. my 4G barely hit 6 mbs QQ
You need to buy a phone that meets your coverage needs. If your roaming in an area where your friends ATT has full service, and you spend a lot of time there, you need to switch.
I work in the wireless repair field, and i tell my customers to find a carrier that has coverage where they spend most of their time at, usually HOME and Work/school.
If your roaming in school you cant really complain about data speeds, as your not on Sprints Network.
I will agree that Sprint does have some 3G issues, could be over capacity, could be interference, could be a lot of things. But its intermitent for me and never prevents me from fully using my device.
The other day i got 2.3megs down at my apt.
The next morning eating breakfast near my office i had .2 megs down.
I deal with it because its a great unlimited plan, and its been reliable.
FYI, my personal phone is an EVO 3D, my work phone is an iPhone 4, Sure it gets 3-4 bars but it also drops a lot of calls. Cant say the same for my EVO 3D. Always reliable. So was the Epic Touch, Epic 4G and EVO 4G. Never had dropped call issues with them.
The 4G signal I get nearest to my home in Sacramento (Sadly it doesn't actually REACH my home) is typically about 12Mbit. Oddly enough, it's right near the Sprint store where I get these speeds. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
The sad thing is, I still can't stream any Shoutcast stations (or SiriusXM) for **** on 4G, have to turn it off, then it streams perfectly over 3G. I hate WiMax.

Exactly what he said. I live in long beach ca 10 years with sprint no issues, and rarely use 4 have, stream everyday while I drive. best bet get whatever works in your most visited area

Well for me it's the opposite. At my house I get usable 4g. The 4g speeds are around 5-8 megabit. My 3g speeds is worse than 56k and I drop calls often.
I have an Airave where if I send too many text messages the recipient gets 10 copies of each text but on my phone it says it wasn't able to send the text.
The network.sprint.com site says there was 25 upgrades near my area within the last six months and another 25 in the coming six months..... But there is no signal or service quality difference.
It gets worse where I work. I used to get at least 150 kilobytes per second at work then it dropped down to 50 now I barley get 5. No 4g service but I can make and receive calls....
I have no one but to blame but me. I've dealt with Sprint for about 7 years.
You should not be complaining about your friend with that pile iphone4s that doesn't have any access to 4g....
My dad and I are on the Sero plan, 49 bucks a month for unlimited plan but with 500 minutes talk time. Who talks on the phone anymore?

Currently I can't afford home internet that is as good as his cell. I had 50mbit through Cox cable, now I have 3.
Manually install different PRL files until you get one that works good for you. Try 11115 specifically, it works great. Or if your tired of Sprint do what I did and flash to Verizon's 00001 to run off Verizon towers first before Sprint's.
On 00001 I get more than double the speed of Sprint at my apartment, and better signal. But at work I get 3x worse than Sprint speed was, although it is about the same cell signal. Its all about finding the one that works best for you.
Personally, while I've had some problems with Sprint, I enjoy the service. I put my phone the data hell, and while in some places I'll admit that I would appreciate having better coverage, the fact that I used only my phone for internet for two weeks (and did a ridiculous amount on it and still do) means that I trust Sprint. Plus, the places that I don't have service, AT&T doesn't have service, and I would have to deal with a data cap. A friend has Metro and hates it. I'll stick with Sprint. It works for me, I love my phone, and I get a great discount because of where I work.
Interesting and informative thread. My compliments to the contributors.
I'm actually surprised that none of the Sprint zealots seem to have made it into this thread to ream you for daring to speak poorly of their beloved carrier.
Great info about using the Verizon PRL's...their service data service here is consistent where as Sprint obviously couldn't care less about their customers in the NOLA area.
Thank you for your time.

Bye Photon/Sprint

Well I had the Photon for about 3 weeks, great phone..
Anyways, I just got tired of Sprints trash network, crap signal inside building..
Got terminated etf free and instantsly went to ATT and grabbed sgsii skyrocket.
all I can say is... why didnt I do this months ago. Speeds are never below 3 megs and **** gets done when you click enter.. no buffering issues either.
Dont even mention lte.. wicked fast and extremely stable.
In my extremely dense school where sprint wouldnt even get signal roaming I have 3/4 bars of lte.. just makes me cream myself..
this is just a small review that I suggest everyone that is bothered by these network problems.
inb4 flame
inb4 sprint dickriders

Excellent. I'm very glad you're happy.
I'm different.
I'd rather deal with slower 3G speeds and iffy 4G coverage than have to count bytes each month. I don't want to worry about my usage. I know that my data usage is going to rise each month and I don't want that albatross around my neck.
For me, Sprint is better.
My signal is fine here, while AT&T's is terrible, if and when it exists at all.
Different areas get different results and nobody really cares.
Nice Phone. Very Nice phone. I question your comments on why, but you got a nice phone.
1. You already stated your in a dense area.
2. (and I have personally checked) All carriers on their map state, even with excellent strength, "May work inside some buildings"
3. I live in a dense area, my bars are usually packed? Sprint cannot control the mountains?
4. Hows the battery with that LTE?
Again, nice phone and no doubt better than most in the food chain, but.......JMO.

1. dense I meant the school building. Im in Houston so no mountains.
2. Oh no lol my sprint phone couldnt hold signal worth of poop in a lot of buildings. Even wrapping my giant hands around it, the signal would drop a couple of bars
3. Ah well Sprint is great in my opinion if your not inside a building. (signal) data is only good in the very late night and early mornings or low population areas
4. I wake up at 6 everyday and it lasts till about 7-9 pm depending on the usage.

I swallowed an ETF fee from verizon just to "stick-it-to-'em" when they switched to tiered data. I honestly appreciate the unlimited data and cheaper pricing and I'm a big fan of them and all... but sprints 3g is absolutely, pathetically insulting and painstakingly embarrassingly slow.
I dont live in a large market but verizon just fired up LTE in the area and my girls Bionic pulls down 14mbps. 14MBPS!!!! Thats faster than my home internet connection!
I just ran speed test on sprint, its in line with all my previous runs: 115kbps down.
One.
Hundred.
fifteen.
kbps.
I'm counting the days until my contract is up and sprint has better got some serious 4g improvement cause this is ridiculous.
*edit* the speeds I get with sprint dont even qualify as "3G." Wikipedia: To meet the IMT-2000 standards, a system is required to provide peak data rates of at least 200 kbit/s (about 0.2 Mbit/s) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3G)
That is why also im doing the etf on sprint and going back to big red. 4gb data right now for 30the and i used maybe 1.5 amonth on sprint. Data speeds are horid here in omaha and im just done with it
You think y'all got it bad?
Just tasted and got 34.9KB/s. Go go US Cellular. Loovvveee the phone and prices, haaatteeee the speed and 5/gb limit.

Lol....you almost sound disappointed.
It all depends on the area. Where I live Sprint doesn't have any 4g but the 3g speeds aren't too bad. Signal is actually pretty good no matter where I go. Sitting in my office right now I have full bars and hardly ever do I drop a call.
As for AT&T, not sure why anyone signs up with them. Possibly the worst customer service in the entire world not to mention they will steal your money if you are not looking (they have done it in the past and was proven in court). Have dealt with them numerous times over the years and I just can't do it. Sure, Sprint has their issues as well but nothing like AT&T. Just a terrible company.

Since the iPhone came out for sprint, and they singed up 700K new customers, the network has gone to CRAP. Not to mention getting rid of the premier program.
I'm an 8 year customer, and would bail in a heartbeat to a Verizon Nexus if it had unlimited internet.
But alias, they do not. I think sprint will fix things over this year, but it sucks in the interim.
Between the ICS development on the Photon, and my tethering... Sprint is hands down the way to go. I will grant you the fact that depending on your location... 3g speed is just plain bad. But between their 4g LTE rollout slated soon and my family plan with '6' lines... I will go with it.
Im counting days till when I can drop Sprint. I used to love the company and Ive been with them since 1998. However, Im tired of the slow data downloads, weak signal (which the tower is a half mile away form where I live) and what got me the most was the $10 extra for a 4g enabled phone without any 4g signals near me. I guess my friends always teasing me with their reliability on verizon doesnt help much either.

Now you are going to get flamed only because your last comment is inaccurate. Sprint is not relying on Lightsquared for LTE. This is not a Clearwire Wimax situation where Sprint relied entirely on Clearwire to provide 4G Wimax coverage.
Sprint is actually building out its own LTE network and Lightsquared was to be used for network hosting and be able to use part of the 1600 Mhz spectrum. All the Lightsquared situation is a lost revenue and spectrum capacity opportunity. In fact in your situation, Sprint is rolling out its LTE in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Kansas City, and Baltimore in June 2012 NOT 2013. Plus many markets will be announced later on this year by Sprint. Not only that but Sprint's new network vision tower infrastructure will improve 3G speeds dramatically with fiber/microwave backhaul.
I hope sprint improves it's 3g data before my contract is up and have some sort of 4g/lte in my area. I just lost my ns4g and looking to pick up a photon until then.
I know this thread is old but I wanted to just throw this out...
I switched to my friends extra Photon 4g he had lying around because my stupid girlfriend lost my phone. Anyways, I noticed that 3g speeds on THIS device is HORRIBLE. Before then I had the Evo3d and I was getting between 1.3-1.8 mbps on 3G. I've since then attributed the horrible 3g speeds to this phone just being bad with 3G and NOT Sprints network. Okay, maybe all those new iphone users may have slowed it down a bit but seriously, this phone makes me want to ****ing hurt someone.
For all those wondering if I tried tweaking my settings, I have. I did the whole ##3282## **** and messed around with the ip address's and the buffers and what have you but I still can't get passed the 800kbps mark. It actually sticks around 300-700 most of the time. This is totally unacceptable.
With that said, I don't blame Sprint and I actually like my $46 a month I pay for each line on my account (5 lines) WITH the extra 4g data charge. I can't really complain as my 4g is still fast. I'm just waiting to hop back on a HTC phone, the HTC Evo 4g LTE phone. I know the city where I'm currently at will not be getting lte anytime soon but I promise 3g speeds were never this horrible when I had my either my Evo 4g or my Evo 3d devices.
FU mopho 4g.
I just ETF with Sprint too (after 10 years with them) - Went and flash my photon with $40/mo using Metro, saved $40 a month and get the equivalent 3G service.

Is it even worth it if you live in an area without LTE anytime soon?

I live in Minnesota, there is Wimax coverage in the cities that I use a lot.
I know Sprint is rolling out new tower updates, but I don't think they have done jack squat in Minnesota.
I currently have a Epic 4G Touch with AOKP, my 3G speeds are horrible everywhere. I would be lucky if 3G speeds are .20 Mbps. The saving grace is Wimax that I use everyday for work. My work internet is slow, so I tether my Wimax, speeds are decent.
With that said, the EVO 4G LTE isn't even Wimax compatible, and I have no clue when they are going to start 3G tower upgrading let alone LTE here in Minnesota.
What's the point of having a data plan if I have to be on Wifi to use the phone effectively.
So to you owners without LTE and their new 3G, how are you handling it?
having this same dilemna. 3g is so so in my are. usually b/t 200-400kbps.
We have wimax but its not all that great either. I love my epic touch 4g but im just ready for something new. Decisions.
I love this EVO & I have good 3G.
If you have WiMAX now, dismal 3G & you aren't in a 1st, 2nd or pending wave NV/LTE region (don't focus on the city name on the rollout list, if you're near the city, you're fine) I say no.
Test the EVO LTE's speed in store as it runs 3G better, just to get an idea on if you could tolerate that performance, vs judging from your existing phone.

I have no WiMAX in my area so LTE won't matter to me. 3g is fast enough around here for when I'm not on WiFi.

Usually I am near a wifi so this isn't a big deal for me when wifi actually works. 3g is good enough to stream pandora and check email on the road.

its worth it. get the phone if you can.
i leave wifi on. this phone utilizes wifi so well and is so energy efficient compared to the evo 4g. im amazed. so i just leave it on.
3g gets turned on when im away from the house.
by the looks of it, lte round 2 rollout will probably be sooner than i thought. hopefully.
Well the short of it is if you truly use wimax every day and you are not in one of the first cities then keep your current phone...otherwise you'll have to go to wifi or suffer through the 3G in your area...
btw here is Mn NetworkVision rollout...http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...in-network-visionlte-in-the-2nd-half-of-2012/

click that link i posted up there....they start this month supposedly and have first sites live in July sometime....now if they do the same LTE blockout like they are right now till they are ready with more sites to bring on at once who knows...
My 3G coverage is perfectly fine here in Colorado Springs. I wasnt using wimax on my OG EVO anyway so Im not missing anything. And actually I feel like this phone is having a better signal on 3G than my OG was.
Yes.
I live in Minnesota (Eagan) and here are my recent results from a few minutes ago. With my nexus s 4g I never broke 1.2Mbps down and up was usually around 350 kbps. Something is better about the 3g in this phone. I can't believe the up results.

thank you for that info, i live in columbia heights and the 3g is so bad here its a joke. Would you say the call quality (dropped calls etc) is better vs your old device? And do we have anyone from the north metro reading here? My kid lives in coon rapids/ blaine area. I was wondering if the new evo is better there also.

I've only made two calls and they were both good. I discovered during the calls the tiny microphone hole is easy to cover with my pinky though which annoyed me but i will get used to that. I never had problems on my old phone with dropped calls though.
No.
Is it even worth it if you live in an area without LTE anytime soon?
No. After the newness wears off, it's just another late model Android phone. Seriously.
If it were on VZW's LTE network, it would be worth all the accolades. But on Sprint's third world data network, it's no faster than any other smartphone on their network. Sure apps open quickly, but need data? Get ready for the scrolling progress wheel.
I have one. It's a pleasure to hold, but I use my Droid 4 when I leave the house. It's world's faster than the EVO.
A separate question is, why would anyone be on Sprint, if not for price, these days? I know that's why I'm on it.
(And for the masses 'satisfied' with 3g - Sprint has you right where they want you. I'm sure there were lots of people on dial-up saying "I don't need DSL" 15 years ago... The difference is night and day.).
Figured they'd flip the switch in Atlanta already, in time for their delayed launch. No such luck!
If you want the best phone on the market today that will function until 800 LTE arrives then this phone is for you. This phone IMHO future proof until 2014 LTE roll out. SVDO, and HD voice smooth fluid software interaction, excellent appearance screen wise, build quality, and weight makes this the best Android phone on the market.
This is my opinion from ny handling it yesterday in a Sprint store. SGIII may be faster, but other than "SPEED" the EVO 4g LTE has feature thatmost people will love to have. The number one feature that it has is SVDO, number two HD voice future hardware built in.
If I needed a phone today even if it didn't have LTE this is the one to have! If I don't need a phone I could wait, and I am waiting, but I am leaning towards this and in a few weeks if there are no bugs.......my Photon in immaculate condition is out!
I would say it depends on the way you use your phone.
If you use data intensive apps like I do (netflix, plex, youtube) then no.
I use wimax multiple times thru out my day so I would sorely miss it.
I pr-ordered one from Wirefly because $119 was just too good to pass up.
But cancelled later on because I would be kicking myself after newness wore off and I was stuck on 3G for thenext couple of months until LTD is expected to be launched in NYC.
I say yes for obvious reasons but the one fun fact about this phone is.....You can talk AND surf the web at the same time on 3G!! I see people get upset about the fact they don't have LTE yet or it's not coming to their area anytime soon. Lest we forget my fellow EVO users we did the SAME EXACT THING when the OG EVO was released. WiMax was a big deal but at least LTE is rolled out already in some places. WiMax was non-existent at that time and that didn't stop any of us from pre-ordering and waiting in line for that breakthrough in technology. This phone is no different. It's cutting edge technology and, TRUST ME, when you use the phone and see that screen, you're not gonna give a rat's bottom about LTE. You would, like me, stick to WiFi or 3G and be cool with it until LTE comes to your town the same way we did with WiMax. This phone is light years ahead of the OG and the speed and functionality are unmatched, in my opinion. I find a new feature everyday and I've had my phone since the 25th. I say try it and feel it out. You don't like it return it for your money within the Return Policy and wait for the next big thing. You have nothing to lose and you can see for yourself if you wanna keep it or wait. I can almost guarantee once you use it, it's almost impossible to go back to the OG.

In depth comparison of 3g speed between OG Evo 4g and Evo 4g LTE

So I know alot of us are having issues with data speed on our Evo 4G LTE's
Im doing a comparison test using speedtest.net. Because I dont have both devices activated at the same time, I had to do it on one then activate the other and do it on that as well. The phones were placed in the exact same location using the exact same tower, which I am about 1000 feet from.

Now I know this information is slightly off because of the time difference but as you can see the speeds vary greatly. I am going to keep my Evo 4g LTE for a few more days to see if sprint does anything about this.
Things I have done to try and fix the speed issues:
-reset the phone
-reprovision the phone using my MSL
-update PRL
-update profile
-I tested another Evo 4g LTE and got the same dismal results
Sorry I forgot to mention the Sprint rep told me those speeds on the EVO 4g LTE are normal -_-
Wow that was sure "In depth"
In one of the posts on here, there's reference to some optimized network settings. I wonder if that will help.
I don't have the link handy, nor do I recall book marking/subscribing to it. Effectively, it optimizes tcp/ip settings, similar to what was done when going from dialup to dsl/cable; larger receive window buffers and a few other changes.
Sorry I started this thread comparing both phones from 4 different locations on different towers at the same time but for whatever reason none of the screen shots saved on my EVO 4G LTE and I had already switched phones out 4 times and was getting tired of it. But in 3 of the 4 locations the original EVO out shined the 4G LTE. Only in a parking lot with blue skys were the 2 devices similar in speed.
THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS! 3G IS USELESS FOR ME!

Poor Connections - hardware or software?
Massiveian-
Thanks a ton for doing that. I've been keeping a running log of my speed tests on the LTE and was planning to re-initialize the OG 4G to make a similar comparison. You saved me the effort.
Basically your data is pretty clear that the LTE is running approximately 5X fslower than the old 4G on the same exact network setup.
This in my view brings the problem squarely bacj to the phone.
Do you think its fixable? H/W (antenna etc. ) or a S/W problem?
I'm kind thinking that the device and radio are designed for the supposed LTE network and that it's simply suboptimal running on the 3G network and the only thing that's going top work is emergence of LTE network, but based on the "4G" i'm not going to hold my breath.
I'm seeing that this is a real dealbreaker for a lot of users. I'v had the phone since pre-order so its now probably like 2 weks and basically I can't get alot of use out of it.
I'm dialing *2 for sprint in the am and going back to the evo 4g until this is resolved.
I'm frustrated because I got a galaxy [email protected] and it also had really bad connections, now I thought lte would be the one, but looks like I'm going to wait longer.

I have ****ty data speeds too. I dont ha r data to back it up but my phone sucks add if I am not on WiFi.

That ping seems long even for the OG EVO getting 1+ MB/s. Is your GPS picking a server close to you?
For all the people with data connection problems, where are you located? There's been talk about 1st stage LTE rollout cities having their towers heavily worked on to push out LTE which I'm assuming which will affect our data connectivity.
I'm in San Francisco and have noticed horrible speeds in pockets of the city, but will be perfectly normal a few blocks over after switching towers. This makes me fairly certain it's a network issue and not phone issue.
Also, I work in San Jose which is a 2nd stage LTE city (weird how they split the Bay Area into 2 regions) and I've never seen data connectivity issues around there.
Damn those speeds suck, I switched my galaxy nexus for this phone cause I ended up getting better speeds, right now is late in Las Vegas so I'm getting almost 2mbps
This is what I got earlier in the morning
And this is my peak hour
If this speeds go lower I'm changing carriers I like this phone so I do want to keep it but I want to have the same speeds

Although the phone itself is fantastic I really cant recommend it based on the data/network performance... and its really unsettling because the build quality is fantastic and I wanted them to really outshine the competition. I bought a case for it, stuck a screen protector on it, made sure it was all good and ready for the long haul and now I'm thinking of returning it.
Here in Dallas with a 3G speed of 157kbps, you just cant do anything with it. I have to feed off my local wi-fi in order to do anything data related with my phone (thankfully that signal is amazing, 12Mbps).
But now after trying multiple roms, multiple settings, different PRL's I have ran out of options and my 14 days are almost up, I guess the only thing I can do is return it and get my NS4G back until I can test other phones.
It's a ****ing shame, I love the capabilities of this phone, but the speed I'm getting is horrendous.
Here is my speeds from numerous days worth of testing.
My speeds were approximately 1/4 of what I was getting on my OG Evo until yesterday afternoon when I went into settings and manually updated my PRL. Now my speeds are comparable to my OG Evo.

My speeds were also like most of you are reporting, 200k or so. Since having the "software reinstalled and phone re-activated" at the Sprint store this is what I get, same exact place I took prior tests.

Thank you for letting us know. There is a bunch of us ready to jump the gun and return the phone -I do not really want to, but we can't get locked on contract with this going on.-
Can you please provide us with updates on how it works on different locations?
Also, do you have any idea what kind of "reinstall" they did at the store? What if the ones of us who activated the phone by ourselves are the ones having the issue?
Thanks a lot,

All they do is use your MSL TO GET into the phone to provision it.
They did for me as well and did not work. I have also tried dojng this myself with no change
My speeds are so bad I hardly even do anything that requires data unless I'm connected to wifi.
Data seems much faster on the EVO LTE vs my photon and og EVO. Also, the ability to use 3G data while on the phone on the LTE is a HUGE benefit. Wait for the upgrades, speeds will increase for everyone on 3G as well as LTE.
Also, EVERY new phone has the same exact threads and discussions about how oh my god data is so much slower on this new phone -I'm gonna return it!! Well put the same phone on Verizon's PRL and it works just fine for data speeds. Point being, it's not the phone it's the network-WHICH IS BEING UPGRADED. wait for the upgrades or jump to Verizon.
My speeds are way faster than my OG and my 3D. But have only been so on PRL 24003. I know it's not supposed to work that way, but as soon as I change PRLs, my speed drop.
My speeds at home are the same or faster than I was getting on og EVO, however, the signal is worse. I might try roam control and force my phone on vzw network at work, then if sprint doesn't like it they can cancel my plan
Sent from my LTEvo using the XDA app
Same here in downtown Philly; 3G speeds were abysmal -- when it even connected to a network at all. Between this issue, the issue of WiFi not handing off to 3G (or going to/from roaming -- basically hand-offs were a coin-toss as to whether they'd work), and the random modem-crash reboots, I threw in the towel. The EVO LTE is back at Sprint and I've sadly gone back to my OG EVO. I suspect others will do the same.

Evo LTE vs. ATT one X

Highly considering taking back my LTE and picking up a One X on ATT. I just can't handle 200kbs speeds when ATT has HSPA+ in my area running 8000kbs. Hell most of the time my data won't even function. Compared to my OG and 3D Evo, that actually worked decently.
What would I sacrifice? Battery life? Obviously the camera button, kickstand, and SD card..
You'd be sacrificing the chances of being a part of Network Vision. Wait til it hits your area and try out the LTE and new 3G updates, then make your decision.
don't forget you also have to worry about the locked bootloader issue. Although there's a workaround available already, it looks very high-risk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671396
if you think the things you listed above is a good trade-off for 3/5gb of fast data, then go for it.
Who knows when so-called Network Vision goes live in unannounced markets. If you're not part of the 1st or 2nd wave and/or paying $50 or less/mo as part of some SERO plan, I'd return and go with a more mature data network.

i agree 100%. While I'm sure sprint is doing their best to revamp their network it wouldn't be wise to sign into another 2 year contract with them if your data speeds are that terrible and you don't know when the network vision upgrade will hit you...Also everybody is assuming that network vision is going to be the second coming of Jesus for sprint, but until they actually prove themselves you have no reason to believe that their network is going to get any better.
Wimax was absolutely useless for the large majority of sprint customers because of how unreliable it was. I'm sure LTE is going to be better, but i'm not going to take sprints word for it until it proves itself.
To each their own. I don't' mind the 3G so much, because everywhere I go has either open wifi, or there's wifi at work and at home. Problem solved - at least for me.

right, no unlimited data, and if there is a "unlimied" it slows down over time, aside from that...its hell expensive..but if you dont mind paying alot of extra for higher speeds...why not.. and from what i read i dont recomend the att one for the reason that it does not have external storage.
3 GB is plenty of data, I bet you don't even use half that per month on sprint. I'm not torrenting on my phone or anything, most apps are less than 20mb, and I'm not streaming full hd movies on a tiny screen.
Do yourself a favor, remember the best speed that you have ever had on sprint (hell even WiMax, I'll be lenient, 6Mbps). Now go into a Verizon or AT&T store and watch their 3g speed absolutely destroy that.
I;m in Dallas, so the city is an LTE firebed, I went into a AT&T store and ran a speed test on their network. I was getting anywhere from 32Mbps to 52 Mbps, yes, you read that correctly, approximately 8x the best speed of sprint.
Stop crippling your phones.

If your not doing ne thing like streaming or torrenting what do you need faster data for?
Id rather have slow data, and have it be unlimited...than have it fast and worry about going over. I dont argue that VZ or ATT dont have better networks...they do...but they also charge twice as much for it while giving you less.
Sprints 3g is fast enough for 99% of what i do on my phone (light browsing, email, fb, etc), and the other 1% im usually on wifi for or lte when it comes out in my area.
Would i like Sprint to be faster...sure...do i need it bad enough that id be willing to spend 2 times what i pay now..not a chance.

I hate to nit-pick, but EVDO Rev. A caps out at roughly 3000 kbps. I'm not sure where you're going to find a Verizon 3G device that will "destroy" 6 mbps considering that's what they're running on 3G devices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution-Data_Optimized
While you can also argue that HSPA+ isn't truly 4G, and actually a modified 3G network, and based on the 3GPP standard. AT&T loves to tout this as part of their 4G network, and have fooled most non-technical people. These networks can provide a theoretical 160+ mbps, so yes, any network that can truly take advantage of newer HSPA+ hardware (phone and tower) can pull down incredible speeds.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSPA+
We all know it's not fair to judge these figures against LTE networks, but as an example, my iPhone 4S will pull down about 1.3-1.6 mbps depending on the time of day. I'm excited that they're upgrading my phone after some hardware issues, and will be joining the Android fold once again with either a GNex or EVO LTE.
Ninja Edit: http://i.imgur.com/mHTEM.png - Recent 2 mbps Sprint speedtest. I'm only getting 1.5 mbps tonight though.
