ive noticed i my gps signal constantly drops out while navigating and the only way to get it back, is to hold it in the dash with absolutly nothing blocking it overhead. With my OG evo, i did not have any issues whatsoever, always a strong signal. does anyone else have this problem? im considering replacing it, unless its just a software issue that may be fixed in the next firmware update.
Same issue here.

Everyone's issue?
I want to love this phone but it seems im going to return it soon one i get it and get the optimus3d.
I do not want problems with any hardware or antenna.
I have some ideas. In /system/etc/gps.conf there are some lines that look like if changed would help. I changed the intermediate accuracy level to 100, and where it said disable.agps.in.wimax I changed that to false. It may also benefit to change the allowance if intermediate position to zero. And old hack we used to use was to add the line QOS_ACCURACY=16, but I think that's the same value hack as the one I just mentioned. Feel free to try these. I don't use gps much, so my modifications may go unnoticed. Ymmv

Waaahhh. How in the living hell do you know that an UNRELEASED device has "no GPS issues" - for real. Also, have fun with the awesome monthly premium you'll get for AT&T and their awesome network If you can develop a little patience, I would tell you HTC has awesome build quality, and the dev support for this phone is great, so GPS will get better. Maybe not by tuesday, but sometime.

I live in the netherlands where its already released and im getting it tuesday. Your posts doesnt make sense.
You cant improve hardware with software...you can tweak to make it work a bit better...but it doesmt chance the hardware...
well the thing is, i believe the gps hardware is just fine. its probably the same chip they use in other phones. hopefully were just a few tweaks away.

do you use your Google navigation often? If its an issue thats not widespread, then ill probably just take my phone. I just dont feel like going through the hassle of getting a new phone if the refurb is going to have the same exact issues.
I have the same issue. Constantly losing GPS when I didn't have this issue before in my area on an Epic 4G. Sprint TeleNAV and Google NAV do it.
I’m an extremely heavy GPS user. I used my Evo as my GPS every day for work, and now my Evo 3D. In the year that I had the original Evo, not once did I have an issue. And by an extremely heavy user, I use it to locate 20-40 (depending on the day) locations a day, every day.
I bought the Evo 3D on launch day, for the first week or so the GPS worked great, it lost the signal once or twice, but I ignored it. Then one day it kept losing the signal a lot. I’m talking like 5 times in an 8 mile stretch on the same road. It started taking forever to recalculate, there was an extremely noticeable lag (it would say for example, my next action was a left turn 1.3 miles away when I already passed the road I was supposed to turn on to). Not only did the signal drop out while driving, but it would drop out while just being parked, and then it takes forever to require the signal. And my personal favorite when your five miles into a 17 mile long run ON THE SAME road/highway it will just randomly recalculate. What’s up with that? i assume these are the same type of issues everyone is having?
Now I took the phone back to the Sprint Store, I was within 30 days so they swapped it out for a band new one for free. The new phone worked great for about 2 weeks, and the same issues started happening, but a lot less frequently, it was tolerable, but so far this week it has been pure hell. This afternoon I lost count, but I was up to 157 instances (this week alone) where the GPS has lost the signal, rerouted me randomly or incorrectly, failed to properly update me of my next action, or just took forever to acquire the satellite signal. This week has been extremely aggravating, to say the least.
Here is one thing I noticed this afternoon, I’m not sure if this is just a fluke or what. I always keep my phone connected to a car charger when driving. For some reason I unhooked it and was running on battery, the GPS worked perfectly to get me from my last two stops of the day, back to work, a total of about 60 miles worth of driving. Not one drop out, not one bit of lag. Prior to that I couldn't go 5 miles without some type of problem. Tomorrow, I will be in an area I’m sort of familiar with and won’t need the GPS much, but I’m going to map out my stops anyway just see how it behaves on battery, until the battery gets low. That final 60 miles today took me from 100% to 55%.

I don't know if this is in the right area so if it's not please move it. I know there is a lot of questions revolving around the GPS for the Vibrant.I was just curious to see how you guys are getting the best performance from your GPS using Bionix 1.3.1. So please post and tell me, my GPS sucks and I've tried all fixes that I know of including the hardware fix. THIS QUESTION IS FOR BIONIX 1.3.1 USERS ONLY THANK YOU!!!

my gps never worked until they sent me an exchange. now it is amazingly good. i even tried walking from one end of the driveway to the other using My Tracks and it had me the whole way. i think one night i even locked on to 9 out of 16 birds. i never even heard of anyone seeing more than 13 birds! sometimes when i first turn it on it has me a few blocks away but within ten seconds i'm locked on. even works pretty well inside. the warranty exchange definitely did the trick, although i believe i got a brand new phone, who knows? definitely a hardware issue IMHO

Any idea what kind of accuracy you get?
It will find sometimes up to 13 sats, but from that point it will never lock. I've left it on for 30 minutes before trying to get it to work. It never wants to lock though. The accuracy is always terrible to, it always ranges from 3500 to 2700 meters never gets below that.

Yeah, that is terrible. Did your GPS ever work? (Before Bionix)
I got it to lock one time. I had to leave it on for 45 minutes though before it would lock and after that it never locked again. I know this is one of the devices mfg before OCT 2010. I already called them and they want me to send it in. If there is a fix that I can use to get it working before I send it in though, that would be great.
Oh and I have tried the gps restore app from the market and that always fails too.

Well .. It's a little bit awkward, because everyone here says gps on bionix 1.3.1 it's working well but mine sucks. Utterly bitterly sucks. It always says "could not get your location" and stuff..
Mine works great with Bionix 1.3.1 & Sgps. I flash it at the same time I flash Bionix. I don't know if it makes a difference to do it that way. I'm also running Overstock. I can usually get a lock in 5 to 20 seconds even indoors. I've had lots of trouble getting it to work in the past but Sgps seems to work for me.
PS: Before launching my GPS app I use GPS test to get a lock then launch my GPS app of choice.
Hmmm... Sgps? Where is that? I'm gonna give it a shot.
Okay I guess I'll just have to send it off lol. I've tried all of the software fixes and I've done the hardware fix and none of that has helped in anway. I think the GPS in there is just bunk lol. Thanks for all your suggestions though guys. I appreciate it. Well a week without my phone, I don't know how I'll live.
en,GPS also drove me crazy at first, but when I reset APN without any software,it‘s working perfectly~
I sent it off couldn't find a fix that worked. Oh well hopefully it comes back working. I just don't know how I'm going to survive a week without my phone
I have an SGS1 now. Considering upgrading due to unfixable lag with it. Is the SGS2 free from major problems?
Experience may vary .. but for me, after 1 week (coming from HD2), it's a dream phone. Biggest problem seems to be battery life. My is comparable to HD2, but some people have considerate problems with it.
Battery life (fixable - there are some rogue processes that eat it up), banding (16bit color instead of 24bit - fixable, driver issue).
phone gets very hot when gaming, radio is a bit f***ed in that sometimes you cannot get the internet to work when going from wireless to 3g (workaround is to toggle flight mode, bit annoying to be honest). some are experiencing a yellowish left side of the screen, though i personally do not have that problem.
all in all it's a good phone with a few quirks, but comparing to sgs1, (had it previously as well) i must say that it is quite a leap in the right direction.
speaking of lag on sgs1, have you updated to 2.3.3? i gave the phone to my mom and installed 2.3.3 and the lag is almost gone to be honest.
My Wifi signal seems week ?

Have 2.3.3. but lag returns after a while...
OP, go visit a few forums for phones that have recently been released. The new question isn't "are there any major problems?", but "which major problems should I investigate?" I would challenge any existing SGS2 user to point out a dual-core phone that has fewer issues. You'll find "different" issues, but not "fewer." For now, for me, there's no phone currently out that I'd replace the SGS2 with.
And OP, the direct answer to your question is find the threads on display banding, Wi-FI performance, GPS, 2/3/4G radio, audio, camera, and battery life and if, based on your needs, you're OK with what's been discussed you should be fine.
OP, just read across this board and see! No need for a new thread.
Had it for a few days. My wifi works fine, no light leaking out of the sides, battery life is normal for an Android smartphone. I don't notice any banding (and I'm not going to go looking for it).
Coming from a Nexus One it's a massive upgrade. Couldn't be happier with it (aside from the loudspeaker quality, iPhone 4 is better in this regard).
By all means take the plunge. It's the best phone currently on the market.

Which network are you using? It could be an issue on the provider's end! I am on Telstra NextG and find that the issue occurs only in certain areas. I believe it is very tower-dependant as I can go into areas where it flips between 3G and HSPDA+ many many times without fail and then I can get into an area which I assume have not been upgraded and I will end up with the phone stuck in one of the two modes and not be able to transfer data.
I really want this phone when it comes to Canada. The issues seem either minor or limited to small percentage of units. No different than the SGS1 or any piece of technology for that matter. Defective units do make it out the door, that is why there are warranty and return periods.
As to the issue some of you guys are having with loss of data signal, the SGS1 had an issue while on Eclair where when you were in a no signal area the phone would totally freeze and you would have to reboot. It's been fixed since Froyo along with many other bugs.
Enjoy your phone, I hope to join ya'll in the not too distant future.

I am assuming the connectivity issue people are having is with the "up arrow" constantly lit up but not the down arrow. This problem I have seen in every single android handset I have used (G1, Optimus T, SGS1, and of course, the SGS2). The only common denominator is that I have used all of them while on T-Mobile USA's network. It almost always happens when I am in areas with spotty reception, or in other words, instances when I lose signal, momentarily.
However, that isn't the biggest issue for me. I bought the SGS2 to play the Gameloft games I bought on my SGS1, and I can tell you right now that this is the biggest shock to me when I did get my SGS2: none of my Gameloft games work (Asphalt 6, MC2, NOVA2, Eternal Legacy). Although I am finding out more and more about why this is the case now, this was not something I saw coming in the research I've done leading up to my purchase of this phone. 2D games seem to work fine, but if you intend to play 3D games on this phone, I suggest running some searches here with the the name of a game-in-question to see if there are any threads already about its compatibility with the SGS2.
That being said, I do not regret buying this phone one bit. It is hands down the smoothest Android experience I have ever had. I cannot slow this phone down even when I tried, and I am a very heavy user--I can drain my Vibrant's battery in under 3 hours, with di.fm playing while I use feedly and the browser while talking on beejive. This phone can handle that with no slowdown, and last much longer than my Vibrant to boot. I've actually gotten through a full workday with this usage pattern, on a single charge. This is the first phone to last me through an entire day. Even my iPhone needed charging mid-day.

That was the biggest pile of junk i had ever owned. In 5 months the charging port quit working. In 8 months power botten failed. So then, all the phone would do is boot over and over. Completly usless.
The GPS in my 3D is very weak. Even outside it does not lock well and the accuracy is poor. I tried using GPS Status app and re-initializing the data, which helped a little, but it is still poor. My EVO 4G locks almost immediaty under the same conditions. Any ideas?
I also have this issue, but it's not everywhere. The first week I got it, I was using the GPS in Detroit, and if the phone wasn't right by the windshield, GPS signal would be lost and it would have a tough time acquiring my location again until I put it up past the steering wheel, and even then, it had the little radius circle showing where I "approximately" was. I was really frustrated with that because it defeats the whole purpose of having GPS in a phone. My OG EVO never had this problem.
I tried it again around where I live in SW Michigan and it was perfectly fine in my lap. No radius, just a dead on lock. Not sure why it was having issues in Detroit.
I just tried it again. EVO 4G = immediate lock. 3D = no lock. It sees some sats, but after 1 min, no lock. WTF?

It upsets me that they put out somany devices yet they can't seem to fix any problems .
Speaker vol sucks
Gps sucks
Music playback sucks
4G sucks
No unlock bootrom
Battery life gotten better
Screen is alright (no retna display)
The phone is a downgrade from my EVO if it wasn't for the battery life I would have returned it
My main reason behind an android device is Gps and tether . If none of them work properly I might as well buy a iPhone it has better app support

What about music playback sucks? I haven't noticed any issues.
Bootloader will be unlocked and this isn't really something that needs fixed.
Do you know what resolution the screen would have to be to be >300 ppi? Problem is: HTC doesn't make a 1080x720 4.3" screen, in fact, no one does. Not yet at least. Take your pick: 4.3" or 300+ ppi
Not sure how its a downgrade.
If its so bad then why don't you get an iPhone? You can tether with a jailbroken iPhone and there are plenty of apps to provide turn by turn GPS navigation. Sounds like thats what you really want, so you should stop wasting your time with a phone that in your eyes is not good enough and go get one.
Bc I'm tired of feeding into apples gimmics . But HTC could spend a little more time working out issues with the device . Like I said the reason I'm keeoind the device is my EVO was best to death the battery lasts me the whole day and the processor is faster .. but if the iPhone was on sprint i would probably get it no way in hell I'm paying 100+ for my phone bill

For me it locked in under 10 seconds ( first time using GPS using GPS Status in my Car ) and accuracy was 5m. So its way faster than my N1 and way way way way faster than my Vibrant / Galaxy S
GPS on the 3vo is significantly worse than the 4G. The 3vo is slower to lock, significantly less accurate, and looses lock fairly often. It works better in Google Maps than other location apps, but is still relatively poor.
I brought the 3vo and 4G on a bike ride, and used Endomondo to track my ride. The 3vo was significantly less accurate than the 4G that was right next to it.
I hope they can fix the GPS issue (along with bluetooth connectivity, overheating, camera issues & radio issues I have experienced) in an update.

The GPS in your 3D is not 'very weak'...lol.
Google Maps is still trying to 'drive your bus', (so to speak), I'd bet.
This is a 3 step process; at least it was for me:
1) Delete Data from Google Maps apk.
2) NOW, you can use the GPS status trick.
3) Most important: You MUST update your profile. I just made sure my prl was correct at this moment before doing so.
reboot, enjoy.
It may take a bit for the profile update to 'catch', but I know that my GPS locks pretty much immediately now....This will solve any 'my 3g signal sucks, now' issues you may have as well.
Lmk if this helped.

I was wondering if that is normal or should it be more accurate? Or can i make it more accurate?
edit: don't mind about the duration, i forgot to turn the app off when i got inside!
My GPS isn't very accurate, but I am in the heart of Hong Kong, so I can't expect it to work well with so much interference. It would detect my exact location in Maps, but it the blue arrow won't lock, and jumps around to as far as two blocks away.
I've tried some gps improvement apps, but they do not work for me.
mine sgs2 does not have very good acuracy. My old htc desire was very acurated compared with sgs2

Wow, sorry but i kinda laugh when i saw the ziggyzag lines. No, the GPS shouldn't be that way, I've used mine several times while driving and it just flows smoothly, like a real GPS device! Once I even had 10 out of 10 satellites locked in a few seconds!
Maybe the GPS in your phone is defective or something, I say exchange your unit for a new one. Hopefully it's still under warranty

Interested in this thread.
I've had my SGS2 for a couple of weeks and have been testing the GPS for accuracy. From my experiences, the accuracy is OK when you are using a 'proper' satnav app (e.g. CoPilot) as the system knows to try and keep the arrow in the middle of the road.
However, one of my hobbies is Geocaching which I need an accurate GPS for and here's where I have had real problems. At a known cache location (i.e. standing exactly on top of it), my SGS2 showed 5 sats locked on, 25m accuracy & 32m to the cache !!! My HTC Wildfire (in my other hand) showed 8 sats locked on, 2m accuracy & 1m to cache.
Time to read more threads and see if this can be improved by software or if I'll have to think about keeping the HTC for caching (which would annoy my 11 year old who now has it) or consider selling the SGS2 and getting a HTC Sensation or Motorola Atrix.
There've been a fair number of positive results with the Vulcan Nerve Pinch, so this is to quantify the findings.
I can't edit the poll, but please take "permanent" to mean 2 days of regular use. So if a single application works for at least 2 days, then vote this, else vote temporary. If improvement didn't last for 2 days, then indicate how long it did last.
Detail of the issue and of the Vulcan Pinch:
The Prime's three antennas use pressure contacts (pogo pins) that can be marginal, causing weak wifi and/or weak or no GPS. Pressing/pinching on the three locations, or along the Prime's top edge (landscape), can improve reception in many cases. Per the poll so far, about 25%.
See pics in below link to find locations of the antenna contacts,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21847680&postcount=52
Well I just did it about 3 hours ago, so I don't know how "permanent" it is yet.
But, so far so good.
You're holding it wrong
unfortunately, no. my gps still doesn't see jack and wifi still slows to a crawl when there are walls between prime and the router.
Well what do you know, they named a Fix after me.
To what I understood there were two different kind of problems for GPS :
1) Some people had no GPS satellites detections at all.
2) other people had satellites detections with locks but at a low reception level.
I guess this fix is only working for the case number 1. In that case, people are now joining the case number 2.
For people who were already getting a few satellites (case number 2), it will change nothing as the back cover is still the same ...

Spock of Star Trek ~ How to render someone unconscious
Pinching didn't help. My GPS was fine until the last update. I ran GPS test before and after the update since the update was to fix GPS. I wanted to see the improvement, but I only got to see how it made my GPS completely unfuctionable. The same exact thing happened to my Dad's Prime. I sure wish Asus would get their **** together.
I tried the vulcan pinch a few days ago but did not affect GPS. I even drove block to block to see if google maps updated my location but no go. I dont think it affected my wifi either but I think my wifi was good to begin with and had thought it was bad as I was basing it on the signal bars.
Got a c1 model from BB last saturday. After ics update and vulcan pinch, Gps Went from zero sat to 11 views with 8 locks indoor. Unfortunately, view/locks are intermitents. WIFI didnt improved and is quite slow but stable. I noticed that i cant switch on/off the gps device from anywhere in the settings since the ics update, but it was still available before the update.(?)
Got my squeezer from Best Buy (serial BC). Wi-fi working fine, 4g LTE is sweet. Gps works only outside, but locks in and out with movement, bad. All the pinching for not. Dock works great. I will keep returning trying different units until Best Buy bars me.
BC model from Comet (UK) wifi works fine but had no GPS signal prior/after ICS update. After the big squeeze the GPS is now working indoors, albeit with weak signals (best result I had was 11 Satellites / 7-9 locks - range of 15-31 SNR). On the road it managed 5-7 satellites with locks dropping in and out.
I'm going to hold off on answering because although I have wifi analyzer and gps test pre and post Squeeze that shows it improved......I also have the similar results from 3 weeks ago or so when my gps and wifi were "fine" and then they went "bad".
So something changed for me even before the Squeeze (no, I didn't drop it ) So I'm hesitant to say if mine has been "fixed" temporarily or more. I think that IF this connection is the culprit then we all might find that our reception might be hit or miss over time. Hell, all I did was reboot a few days ago and I got a lock on a few satellites v. none prior to rebooting.

It still doesn't say how it applies in our device.

It's just the original technique that is applied to the Prime, that's all this Vulcan Nerve Pinch is.
