Ok, so I've been having some super odd problems with my GS3 that I've sort of narrowed down.
When plugging into a PC (to charge or copy files) I'll lose any and all sound, even after a reboot. Usually a power off/on will fix it, or I might have to pull the battery.
Also, sometimes it will start to freeze up. It will be butter smooth for a few seconds, then freeze for 3-5 seconds. Usually recording all of my touches, and then quickly doing them all when it un-freezes. This I usually can NOT get to stop without pulling the battery, and even then it might do it again. Sometimes after I unplug from the PC, and I get a notification for a text, it won't play the sound, and sit there and vibrate continuous for 5-10 seconds. Then the freezing will start.
The freezing comes and goes, but usually gets started shortly after I've been plugged into the PC. I've also seen the MTP app start, and freeze.
It did this stock. Now I've completely wiped and flashed Omega, and a Abyss kernel. Its still doing it. The sound always goes out, but the freezing seems to have subsided a bit. I did wipe my app backups, do new ones, and restore those.
Does this sound like a hardware issue, or software? I can't find ANY apps that are locking up/sucking up CPU time. What app could be causing something like this? Apex? Liteflow? I am having problems with Apex, where a few times a day when going back to the home screen it will stop working, and show a black screen till it loads. Its not the phone itself, notification bar still works and everything else works, but Apex just blacks out until reloading.
I did root when I got the phone, and restored my apps (apps ONLY) from a backup made with my HTC One X. I'm still using those apps/app data.
One more thing, I can safely say I only started having issue after I flashed my first .zip in recovery. It was for the Camera mod, someone had made a flashable .zip file. After I flashed that, the phone went crazy. No sound, locking up, nothing worked, and it took several reboots for it to settle down and start working.
None of this happens when plugging into power only, just a PC.
Ideas?
EDIT:
Ok, I'm pretty certain this problem is started by a notification. It only seems to start happening if I get a notification, and it will do the crazy 10 second vibration, followed by no sound, and freezing.
Also even when its working normally, everytime I get a notification I have odd problems. Maybe a stutter, sometimes the keyboard closes, etc.
Today it started shutting off by itself.
EDIT 2:
I have a new phone on the way from Negri. I'm returning this one to let them deal with the RMA to Samsung.
Try resetting your phone and then try again.
Ok, I've removed Apex for the time being, no different. Also, its doing it now without having plugged it into USB, so thats not it. Doing it right now actually. No sound, and freezing. I noticed it exactly happend while I was in the camera app, and a notification came through.
I don't understand, I wiped when I installed Omega??
EDIT: And just sitting there for awhile, its fine again. Didn't restart it at all, just let it sit for a few minutes.
And now, I'm using the camera again and it happened. Can this have something to do with the camera mod?
I'm going to subscribe to this thread. I'm also experiencing the same problems as you, because of this I'm going to re-flash Stock Firmware and see if the problem persists, because it could be due to a bad flash of the Software.
My thread can be found here on XDA. Please alert me if you find a fix, will do the same for you

Yeah your having the EXACT same issue. Mine won't always do the 6 second vibration for a text though. (has done it a few times)
What worries me is that I *have* wiped, and reflashed a ROM. So any software problem should be gone.
I'm going to do a hard reset tonight (wipe everything) and reflash the latest Omega. I'm not going to restore my TB backup either. We'll see what happens.

How do you do a hard reset? I have yet to flash my firmware yet, it still has 17 minutes on the download ticker, so I might do a hard reset and then install the firmware like yourself.
Also, I've noticed that due to this issue, I don't always receive notification sounds when the screen is off. Interestingly mine does not seem to be affected on USB, I've never had a problem with that and have synced with Kies many times. What was your battery level when this problem occurred?

Well today it started happening while using the camera and a notification came through. It hasn't been plugged into USB at all. Its happened at all different battery levels.
I think I'm going to download and flash a stock firmware and try that for awhile. I'll hard reset first.

Alright tell me how it goes. Mine has been going on for a few days now, however it only started happening today after the battery got below 50% so I thought maybe it was associated with that.
Thanks for the link!
Ok here is what I did:
Hard reset using the method listed above
Flashed the latest firmware w/Odin - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
Hard reset again
Enter my Gmail account, *no* apps restored
Lets see what happens. I'm *not* going to do a restore w/Titanium backup until I'm satisfied its fixed. (And then I will probably just unlock/flash recovery, and flash the latest Omega ROM)

I did the exact same process, and I'm not going to be backing up at all! Thought I had broken my phone at first as it wouldn't pick up any reception, turns out the mast down the road had rebooted
Must say, seems snappier already, probably a placebo effect though
Ok, I've used the camera, plugged it into the PC... done some other stuff. I'll use it for awhile tonight and get some notifications and see what happens.
So far so good.

All good for me as well. Trying to do everything with the phone, even posting this on the browser. The stock apps are killing me though...

My phone is definitely much faster, even the home screen isn't drawing my widgets every single time I go to it! My theory is it was just a bad factory flash, the first time I flashed back with Odin my Messages app kept force closing so I glad to re-flash again. I'll keep you posted if problems crop up again.

Everything was great, so I decided to root and do a TB restore. Things were still perfectly smooth, then I got a text and had the 6 second vibration, and lost sound. Had to restart. Never froze though.
Awesome.
EDIT:
Ok, after the reboot, the sound worked one time for the unlock screen, then went back out. And the phone froze.

Hmm, I've glad several notifications and haven't put my phone done since the re-flash and I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever. All I can suggest is that possibly the restore that you did has installed the bad files? I did a bit of research and apparently Odin will not wipe old files off your phone that it doesn't need to, but a factory restore will.. guess this fits in with the problem you have had if it was a bad factory flash that was causing this problem in the first place.

My TB restore is not a factory restore, all its doing is restoring apps+data. No system data at all.
The phone right now has no sound, and is pretty much unusable.

My bad, getting Nandroid and TB back ups mixed up! I don't really know what to suggest now, apart from the fact that I would imagine its directly linked to the restore you've done, as it was only after you did this the problems persisted and that back up comes from a system that also had that problem? I fixed the sound by removing my battery, or sometimes it worked by putting it on charge. Either way, maybe its best to just start again for you rather than installing a back up?

Yeah, I already did another hard reset. This time I let Google restore my apps. (right from the market, no data)
So far its ok, but to early to tell...
After rooting my stock ICS 211 razr, everything seemed to be great. now all of a sudden, the search and home buttons are completely useless and there is no longer a lockscreen, no matter what i set it to be.
i think i have the same problem as this guy; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775206
it could have something to do with the sms limit remover app i just ran, which caused my phone to reboot, i walked away so i cant remember if it was immediately after i ran that app :/ reboot does nothing. another thing i noticed was that my titanium backup freaked out and said my id number or something had changed and asked if i wanted to switch it back, so i did, but that didn't fix it. i would prefer not resetting it or restoring it or anything as whatever has happened might just be restored again. anybody have any ideas??
thanks

if i flash a new rom, would that fix it??
I took the small OTA last night and have since been having data connection problems as well as noise though the Beats headset while browsing. I am in a great 4G area but I am getting connection timeouts intermittently after my connection goes from indicating 3 bars of 4G then switching to 3 bars of 3G. It takes about 30-60 seconds for the connection to time out. While I'm using the data connection I hear a high pitched buzzing through the headset if I am listening to music or (anything that is sending audio to the headset). It sounds like the radio is creating interference.
Verizon is stumped. I'm sure they'll send out a new device but I would be careful about taking the OTA. Hopefully this is an isolated incident but who knows.
Do an adb backup & back up internal storage. Flash/Confirm stock recovery then in fastboot try a factory reset. Confirm boot and double check data. I remember having to do this when coming from GB firmware to ICS. This might apply for the OTA.
I'll give that a shot and report back...

I can only get data for a few seconds at a time now, so it's worth a try. The buzzing through the headphones while browsing and trying to use the data connection is bizarre.
By the way, all stock here: no root, etc.

Ah ok. Do the ADB backup before factory reset so you don't lose apps and system data.

I'm not sure if your isolated in this, as I have not had the circumstance to be listening and browsing yet, but the OTA is going to happen. You can deffer and deffer but one morning you'll wake up to the result of the OTA. That's just the way they roll. It sometimes sucks when you start reading about all of the bugs people are having, and/or the new problems these "tested" OTAs have.

Not sure what ADB is, but unless it is a root thing which the OP was not, nothing is going to stop you from loosing system or app data. As for just the apps, Google woke up a couple of years back and started saving all of your apps so that re-installing them is a snap. Amazon is doing the same. The nice thing about Google now is they are finally allowing you to delete apps you no longer want in your list. As for apps from other sources I only have two that I have to reinstall from the interweb.
My only question is why does Android not allow you to restore app data? Basically they are forcing people to root to have basic luxuries. Not having to set up 6 emails again and again, not making you sign into all of your personal apps, putting your screens back the way they were when you started. In one thread there was a person who said they actually enjoyed the latter part of that, saying that was how they got out of their rut with their set up. Which I can kind of see with the app installation, but the screen set up is a different story. Revisiting apps and deciding if this is something you really want to keep is one thing, but at the same time if it isn't bothering you, then you're not worried about it.
It's not a root function. Does not require root at all.

And you don't loss your app or system data? I'll have to look at that one.
I've had all sorts of data issues with this update as well (was already kinda crappy after the last update, now it's way worse).
Here's some info on the built in backup for ICS
I can't post links yet but just google "android ics backup" and go to the second link.
When I run it my phone starts then backs up a few gig of data then exits out, no confirmation message but also no error message. I think I'm just going to keep trying until I get two backups that are the same size :-/
Let me ask you this.......
What is your current hboot? Go double check.
What are your radio/baseband versions?

So this morning this update got pushed to my phone even though I was still on GB and it screwed it up.
Edit: Thanks to you guys and the RUU, I am now up and running again
History:
I've been lurking in the shadows commiserating with those experiencing these issues with sms and mms after recent flashing. I'm in AZ, have been dealing with these problems for the past month or so.
Like others posting before, flashing to the stock rooted 4.4 Ota rom restored everything to normal, but trying to go back to gummy rom or Viper jacked everything up. I would be able to receive one or two sms, one of two mms, and then nothing else until I wiped cache and rebooted. This actually only worked intermittently, sometimes bringing on the recurring multiple previous delivered message issue. I had accepted my fate, my DNA forever doomed to a stock rom, but was experiencing the horrible sensitivity issue with the capacitive buttons (gag).
Anyway, I gave it one last ditch effort to try to fix the text problem (and ditch the stock rom and the button sensitivity crap) and seem to have stumbled upon something that actually has worked for me. I'm freaked that one small mistake could throw me back into the text problems, but for now, I'm running a fully functional Viper 4.1 without any of the aforementioned issues. If there are those out there still looking for a fix (and not a new phone, like I was considering for a while) let me know with a post in this thread and i'll do my best to explain what I did and why. I am a long time user and have no technical explanation for why it worked, but it did.
My rationale (flawed or not) was to try to get the "lock" from vzw that allows text messages to be sent from the stock rom and transfer it to a custom rom. I figured that possibly when a phone is activated or new rom flashed or when caches are wiped, possibly the custom rom information is sent at that time to vzw and they then activate the cripple on messaging. SO, I did the following to try to get around that possibility:
0. Pull sim card
1. full wipe (cache, davlik, system) and flash of the stock rom
a. reboot system
2. First boot of Stock Rom: skip all adding of accounts, wifi etc.
3. reboot to system
4. after system completely booted, add sim card
5. test sms, mms, group messaging (thereby acquiring "lock" or permission from vzw to text)
a. I sent a ton. just to confirm all was working well. my wifes phone now has a billion random texts from me. i also opened up a text plus account (app on play) to allow testing of sent and received sms.
6. reboot to system
7. test again
a. after testing confirmed, reboot to recovery and PULL sim card
8. DO NOT WIPE CACHE OR DAVLIK OR ANYTHING and install custom rom (Viper for me:highfive
9. after flash in recovery, DO NOT WIPE
10. First boot to custom rom: skip all adding of accounts, wifi etc.
a. system will be wonky, possibly not even boot due to lack of wipe. i may have been able to get away with this because i flashed from sense rom to sense rom. I've not tested this with any cm-based roms, only viper 4.1.0
b. as before skip all adding of accounts or wifi (NO CONNECTION WITH vzw during initial boot - this could be KEY)
c. REBOOT TO SYSTEM, and add sim card
11. test sms, mms, group messaging
a. i was beyond stoked to see that messaging worked. still does work. confirmed with multiple (over the last 24 hours now) sms, mms, group messaging.
b. my keyboard was totally non-functional and it only gave me option to type with voice or send emojii (used google hangouts for all my testing)
c. despite function of messaging, the whole installation was totally unstable due to lack of wipe. soooooooo....
12. reboot to system
13. test again
14. reboot to recovery
15. DO NOT WIPE CACHE OR DAVLIK, perform a "Factory Reset" under the wipe menu
16. reboot to system - cry tears of joy if you now have a bugless, functional custom rom that can message again.
I know there are likely redundancies in my methodology, and i dont know if my theory is in fact what has made this work for me now when everything else failed before, but, fact remains that it worked (is working) for me. I am very hopeful this is at least a way around the problem for those that have been plagued with it as I have.
I'll keep everyone posted with whether or not this sticks forever (i'm only about 24 hours deep), and of any other developments as I likely get stupid/courageous enough to perform additional wipes, etc. Anyone else that has dealt with this issue, your feedback (hopefully successes) and thoughts on the issue are very much welcome. Let's kick this thing.
Doh! Why do I have to go to work?! Stupid railroad... I will attempt tonight when I come home!

works on every phone I've tested it with
Quick update on my end - I finally succumbed to the need to wipe cache on viper, and sure enough my old issues with sms and texting in general returned. I restored back to a nandroid made before the wipe and everything was OK again. I was emboldened to take a few risks since the ball was already rolling - I flashed Carbon Rom with all manner of wipes and with no particular consideration paid to the issue we've been discussing. Surprisingly, everything has been working perfectly with SMS and MMS. Really made me wonder what was going on back then - was it TWRP? was it the wipe? was it something solely on VZW's end that has now been cleared? Don't think I'll ever figure it out completely. Just glad that I seem to be past the issues. Has anyone else seen improvement?
Wow I'm about ready to toss this phone now. I keep getting an issue where messages starts to lag like crazy, and then CONSTANTLY force closes. I'm talking like every few words I type, it force closes. I'll open it back up, type a few more words, the FC again. The worst part is, I've already factory reset for this exact issue TWICE! Both times my phone ran beautifully for a few weeks, then all of a sudden out of nowhere messaging starts turning the phone to ****. I believe the first time this started was after the first minor update after the L release. I'm 100% stock. I don't really have any ideas for what else I can do since I've already done the factory resets and I'm not running any kind of modded software. I can't continue with factory resetting every few weeks.
Any ideas what's going on?
Not precisely sure what the problem may be. I have never had any major issues withe Messages app, but I've also never run the stock AT&T software for any significant length of time.
Try to run the latest RUU. Its a much cleaner way to update than OTA; and will re-image all software and hopefully fix the problem.
Well I might've figured it out myself. I noticed auto-delete messages was off. I cleared out my messages and magically it seems to be running smoothly for now. There must be some kind of bug once you hit a message limit or something...

I thought about that, since I remember at least on past HTC devices the Messages app would have major issues when there were too many messages.
But the factory reset would have wiped your messages; so I didn't mention it. Did you backup and restore your messages after the factory reset?

Yes I think I had restored following the factory reset at first. But then when I reset again, I don't think I did, which is probably why I've been ok for a few weeks now.
