Hey guys. Sorry if this is something everyone around here knows, because I haven't seen mention of it.
Most roms I've seen, including the one I'm using, keep getting updates yet continue to be based on 2.3.3...why haven't we moved along to 2.3.5 or even 2.3.4?
Im new to the evo 3d but I'm used to lightning fast releases with always the latest OTA included on the Evo 4G and this is puzzling.
Thanks!

Not until HTC releases an updated version for the devs to pick at, were stuck with 2.3.3 until then, or until an asop version is successfully ported.
Actually there's this thread two spots down, asking the same question, with the same answer I gave

Thanks for the info!

hi guys i got a replacement phone for my broken evo 4g and I'm getting the evo 3d tomorrow. i usually dislike when people do this but now i understand sometimes its nice to be given direction when u really don't know the development somewhere. what are the recommended or most used roms for the 3D. maybe a few sense and a few aosp rom names. i am very curious as to what the top dogs of the evo 3D are!
Sense roms:
Viper's redline (best imo)
Myn's warm 2.3
Virus' eternity
Aosp:
MIUI
Ics from joelz or decks
Kernel:
Chad's
Tiamat
Ziggy
Hope this helps

In addition to the list provided above, some rough methods of being able to gauge popularity/quality are by looking at view/post count on a thread.
Also, skim read through some of the posts in the thread looking for either issues or praise and the quality of the content.
Without being able to read source code, developers who post links to their source should generally be more reliable. Links will usually go to a git/svn/google code/github site for source.
If you're really curious, open up a developers user information section and look at their last 10 posts, and/or last 10 threads they started and that will start to paint a picture of how they spend their time participating in the forum.
I probably take more caution than most before I load software somebody has modified on my device. The above are all great general tips to help anybody who is "new" to a device start to familiarize themselves with the current development scene.
I was very happy to move from the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D. Good luck!
I'm in the same boat, my 3d should be waiting for me when I get home. I've been reading a lot about rooting it this morning, seems a little more involved than the 4g but doable. Then to pick a rom....so many choices, lol
We're comin from a pure power source.
I was just like you guys a few weeks ago, coming from a Evo 4G to a Evo 3D. Hope that you get a 3D without HBOOT 1.5, it's a bit harder to install ROMS and kernels on than you're used to, and you have to void you're warranty and unlock with HTC. Rooting with any other HBOOT is like rooting the Evo 4G, though.
Other than that, there's a lot of similarities between rooting the devices, but I love the Evo 3d a million times more and don't even miss the kickstand.
my $.02 and most is based on you being a seasoned flasher with the 4G.
Pros:
-Much faster and smoother ride overall
-Native 3.0 so you will finally see AND ENJOY all the bells and whistles
-A lot of the really solid 4G devs are either here now exclusive or also doing 3D so you will see some familiar faces
-Really can't go wrong with any rom you chose as they are all very solid in their own rights less the posted quirks that are just to be expected
Cons: (depending on stance)
-Still an EVO so it's not like you get the full "hey I got a new phone!" feeling
-Dev is still in it's infancy stage so not as up to speed as 4G
-HBOOT 1.5 isn't the toughest thing to bypass but does add a few steps to flashing so if you were a flash-a-holic as I was you will definitely slowwww down
-ICS is starting to come along but definitely slower than most phones
Overall you will enjoy the move. 3D you will get over probably about 5 minutes after you turn it on but it's still an Evo so the phone is a beast. The community itself is a little slow but the people here especially the devs are tops in helping out.
Currently I am running OLYPUS ODEX HD V2 and love it. I went from Vipers Redline which I personally experienced a little more solid running but not enough for me to lose the extra features OLYMPUS has.
Well I got lucky I think. The 3d I got has hboot 1.4!

Very Nice! i would stick with a sense 3.0 rom
ive been useing fresh just for the simple fact of stability not much tweaks done
unlike the evo 4g there isnt much of any feature complete aosp roms unless you like miui style
wow thanks a lot to all of you for the replies. i honestly didn't expect much. i feel very welcome here as a new 3D user. i just opened it and i love it! can't wait to root it and try these out. thanks again to all you i really appreciate it.

Have no idea where to post this thread as there is no forum for this device... but now with the easy root tools and as HTC has released the source code, any ideas on if/when we will see a custom rom or two? A CM perhaps?
Thanks!
also curious about this.
would like to see this too

Root and Rom HTC EVO Design 4G
Hello
I rooted the HTC EVO Design 4G as per this description:
http://androidforums.com/evo-design...tc-evo-design-4g-all-carriers-root-guide.html
The mentioned ROM xFuZiionZz 4 3 2 is fast but has issues with GSM calls on my Device as I'm traveling international I need this capability.
So I still use the original Sprint ROM. But with disabling all not needed apps (because of root) it runs now much faster than before.
Regards
Highc
Evervolv JB
JB rom here if you're interested. I got this phone and was stoked to see this after months of running stock. Almost a daily driver for me

Just read this article and can't wait for it to be released. One question I do have is once this update is released through Sprint, how long before we get a rooted version that we can flash on our rooted phones?
http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/mobility/52314-android-4-ice-cream-sandwich-upgrades
I don't think this is new... HTC has said before that they are planning to release ICS for the Evo 3d in the first quarter of 2012.
I would say within a week one of the devs will have a rooted version.
Honestly I would say there would be a full functional rooted version within 24-36hrs.
Our Dev's are awesome.
Regards,
Tee Jay
With the way Joelz and Chad are cranking it out I'd say we'll have one before the HTC release they're machines.
No doubt they are good but they won't have a fully functioning ROM with 4G and 3D until Sprint pushes it out.
Agreed. But if those 2 things aren't that important to you (no 4g here anytime soon and rarely use the 3d feature so not a big deal to me) then you'll have a perfectly good ics rom way before Sprint finally releases it.
Just give us a leak HTC so it can be on & popping!

Are there any AOSP ROMs that have WiMax / 4G support for the Evo 3D?
ClawDaddy has figured out that Sense is breaking bluetooth so the phone won't phone book sync with bluetooth 2.x cars. But, if you load an AOSP ROM, it syncs perfect as it should!
However, I couldn't find any AOSP Roms that have Wimax / 4G support. I don't care about giving up sense so I can finally bluetooth sync to my car again, but I don't want to give up 4G.
It's more likely htc didn't include the right code for Bluetooth to work with your car in the kernel than sense. Kinda 1 in the same but you might be able to try different kernels and find 1 that has this enabled. I don't know of 1 that does but might be what you're looking for.

the answer is a resounding "NO"
That's right. That's a big negative for your answer. We'll probably get it by years end since it takes a while to reverse engineer 4g goodness. Plus it's not a high priority right now. And probably never will.

No, but the wiimax is being developed in a kang build of CM7 dubbed "KM7" by some. Progress is being made, and it is the dev of this rom's main concern. Browse the Evo 3D CDMA Development forum and find a CyanogenMod 7 post by KMeyers. The most recent update to it, as of today, was made February 3rd, 2012. Keep an eye on it.

Can I just start flashing Sprint ROMs? How do I keep Wimax working?
I would mainly like a stock-based, Sense 3.6 ROM that's less "laggy" at screen transitions (in chat, in text messaging, and esp. bringing up the recently used apps menu, etc), with better battery life (so without Overclocking). Perhaps more conservative screen brightness would do the trick, I find 1 notch up from the lowest brightness setting to be all I ever need unless outside directly in the sun.
TBH I am surprised to find the GB-based Atrix 4G much smoother than this phone. (To be fair, it had SmoothScroll).
I suggest that you start with some ROM's that are designed for the Evo V 4G as those are less likely to cause issues with MMS and other things that are different between Sprint and Virgin Mobile. Harmonia and Mobster are two of the more popular ROM's that are not hosted on XDA.

If anything its VM version of evo 3d that has a slight improvement over sprint. Back in May when they gave VM the evo 3d, it came in with ICS upgrade while sprint users had to wait until July 31rst to get the update. In that time VM was able to give you another upgrade ( more than likely a fix on some bugs) while we are still with the buggy ICS debut. Now with that aside, alot of the custom ROMs on here if not most are compatible with vm. That's probably why there isn't a seperate forum because VM is CDMA and all CDMA networks fell under one forum (boost, page plus, metro and sprint etc.. you are entitled to all the custom features these ROMs offer. As long as they are also VM compatible. While ramjet was kind enough to provide you links on VM based ROMs, these ROMs work too. Check out the CDMA threads and youll see what I mean.

this is confusing to me. If my version is better, why is my software version 1.13.652, a version very similar to the old buggy sprint version?
If your talking about the very first gb stock ROM version that sprint evo 3d had over a year ago then yes. Your not getting that VM evo 3d came out back in May of this year with ICS. Your VM ICS 1.13 is the equivalent of sprint ICS 2.89 both are basically the same thing except Sprints evo 3d has been out way longer thus the higher build number.
For whatever reason your hung up on finding some way to figure out what could make VM evo 3d better is beyond me. I gave you a place to look for custom ROMs that have compatible VM network configurations. Ramjet gave you links to primary VM ICS roms. The only difference I see between the two are the network. Sprint and virgin mobile run off the same towers but VM is lower prioritized and sprints are first prioritized. (Their networks speeds are a joke to me) Go flash one of these ROMs and enjoy the awesome features. If your still stuck on VM vs sprint well I don't know what to tell you.

will it's mainly the hitchy-ness of the UI and the weird radio behavior.
I am investigating the build.prop tweaks and S-OFF for the radio.
I am surprised at the lack of polish on this stock ROM tbh
Hence the reason why most of us have gained s-off and chose to flash custom ROMs that have all these bugs fixed with faster and smoother experiences
