I'm having problems with the Camcorder. My config is:
- 351, installed from .pgk along with 351 baseband
- Stock kernel from 351
- DSP firmware from here: http://android.modaco.com/topic/323780-720p-fix-for-both-my-build-and-official-confirmed-working/
- StreakMod recovery installed
- Portrait mode hack
- Uninstalled some stuff with Root Uninstaller (but nothing related to camera as far as I'm aware)
I'm getting the following problems trying to use the Camcorder app:
- Camcorder starts but will not stop, have to turn off phone (<=VGA resolution)
- Screen shows grey repeating pattern, nothing records (>VGA resolution)
- Force Closes
- Phone slow or unresponsive after exiting from Camcorder app
Is anyone else having similar problems on 351? I tried updating my DSP firmware (see link above) but it had no noticeable effect. I don't think it's a hardware problem as Camcorder worked with the O2 Android 2.1 that was on the Streak when I got it. Still camera works OK.
I'd be grateful for any advice that will get my camcorder working

I had a similar experience. In my case, I believe it was the orientation control software trying to force the camera to portrait.
Try resetting the camera to defaults in the prefs.
I'm running the identical ROM and config as you, including portrait, etc. but I was ALSO using Orientation Control, which I have since removed.
Initially, my camera only showed CIF as a record format, but resetting the prefs got me to 720P.
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
Have just tried deleting application data for camera and then tried a factory reset + SD card format. Whatever I've done to break this, I think I'll need to reflash 351 to fix it
OK, flashing 351 has fixed it. Now to re-remove the worst of the bloatware without breaking the camcorder again!

Try an app such as Titanium Backup that has a 'freeze' feature. You can freeze apps and then test giving you the option to unfreeze then if something breaks.
Thanks - that's a good idea. I've had bad experience with Titanium Backup in past so not keen on using it again but now trying paid version of Root Uninstaller that supports 'freeze'.

Utilizing MIUI camera to configure flash provides two options. Auto and On. Yet neither work.
Does anyone have any information or a possible solution?
Thanks for reading.

try vignette for flash.
vignette isn't working. with the MIUI camera the dev's instructions are to switch off full screen due to some glitch that causes no picture. when i load this camera application i receive the same glitch, can not see picture what so ever.
i explored the settings in the app and there is no appropriate selection to be able to switch as i would with the MIUI camera. it seems this app isn't compatible with the rom.
I use the LED light app and just leave the light on while I take a pic >.>...
LED app like Torch? to activate the camera flash like an independent flash light?
Tried Torch, the app crashed. So I uninstalled it. Currently searching the market to see if anything is going to be compatible here. There must be some sort of fix as this flash problem wasnt listed in the dev's build release notes.
I use this https://market.android.com/details?id=jp.picolyl.led_light
even has a widget I put on my desktop... walk around my house at night like this...
i was hoping that would work
but it didn't
app installs. app loads. when i turn on the flash, nothing happens
leads me to assume there has to be a patch, because again, it must be rom related
Vignette seems to work for me. I have it set to auto flash and it comes on when I touch the screen.
Or is the point that you would rather use the miui camera?
Sorry if I misunderstood
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
when i start up Vignette i have absolutely no picture. just distorted colored stripes across the screen.
the miui camera was indicated as being faulty in full screen mode. within the release notes there were instructions to open the settings within MIUI camera and change off of full screen to resolve the picture issue.
as per developers ROM documentation:
Known bugs:
- Phone reboots when you press exit in Root Explorer (not included)
- MIUI camera has messed up screen (fix this by going into miui cam settings and turn off "Full screen"
that issue is the exact same thing that I am experiencing in Vignette. with MIUI camera i was able to make the appropriate change and restore full picture.
with Vignette no option presents itself to enable me to do this. i dont necessarily care which app i use to take pictures as long as i am able to operate the flash and sustain full camera functionality.
both miui camera the stock camera are not functioning with flash for me. i have set to automatic within miui camera and even still the flash fails to initiate.
even if i switch to "ON" within MIUI camera that doesn't work either. the stock camera app has no flash control option in its settings. and so far the third party apps i've tried such as "camera 360" resulted in a message saying my phone doesn't have flash. and Vignette was not resolving picture. i was unable to locate a respective setting similar to that of MIUI camera to initiate a functional view. therefore was forced to uninstall
Attached a temporary solution
Slightly improved brightness over my original: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996973
I'm working on flashlight fix to work with vignette. Hopefully Trip will fix it too in next release
nice thanks. would this apk just manually be pushed through ADB to sytem/apps? or do i have the option to install straight from SD?
im going to go ahead and try this out. thanks again.
side note: is it correct to assume a pending update for this build considering it was released as a "final version" it would be nice to see some fixes implemented to further stability and full functionality.
another issue ive experienced over the past couple days back and forth between this rom is particularly when files are in midst of being transferred to sd card. but not limited to. the phone seems to force reboot. and this does not cease. case in point. i initiated sd mounting and upon hitting confirm, phone went into power cycle.
update: *Torch works perfect. I hit thanks

i installed the demo. and i had the same screen glitch as stated in the miui release notes. ill try a second install but if theres nothing in the settings similar to miui camera im assuming im just going to see the same screen flicker present itself

I have bought the depreciated version and even though it works great on latest MIUI, flash still doesn't work.
so .... like you said .... depreciated?
turns out it doesn't work after all. wonderful
i can understand the picture part working, unlike the demo. but if flash doesn't work. it doesn't turn out to be an all in one solution. flash is the issue here. i can utilize either miui or even stock camera for the pictures. its the flash that is giving complications.

Use the torch app with it
i guess the torch app will suffice. its going to have to because every app ive tried doesn't recognize the flash function. its a smart work around.
i noticed an update pack released for the rom hopefully flash will be noted for a fix sometime in the future. thanks everyone

I don't think it worked with any roms did it? I don't even think it worked with stock
your right. it never worked. with anything.
although i must say i never tested it on 6.1.3 rom release. but with stock it was working for me. at least it would turn on
I'm using the void forever ROM with fserve's Goldenleaf .v110919 kernel.
When use the stock camera app, I can record video without any trouble, but if I try to take a photo, the focusing reticle shows up on screen and nothing happens. None of the buttons work except the Home button to exit the app.
I also have Lightbox photos installed and even that camera won't work.
On the other hand, I tried out lgCamera (from the Android Market) and I can take photos with that without trouble.
I barely ever use the camera (because let's face it, it's terrible) but does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?
I'm tempted to just put on a stock LG ROM and see if that fixes it, but barring that is there any way to troubleshoot this/figure out what could be wrong?
Uninstalling the Barcode Scanner app and re-installing it seems to have fixed the camera issue. Quite weird.
i too use void forever ROM with fserve's Goldenleaf kernel
and faced this problem
before
i just went into recovery
wiped /user data (factory reset)
wiped cache,d-cache,battery stats
and installed/flashed kernel again
now i dont have this issue
Instead of wiping the whole data partition you could simply wipe camera's data (Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Camera > Clean data and/or cache). Also try Camera360 or CameraZOOM, they provide some additional features.
So I am having a problem with my Thunderbolt.
To start off, not rooted, all stock.
The problem is the seemingly infamous black screen camera app problem. In a nutshell, when I try to open the camera, it goes and stays on a black screen forever, with no buttons other than Home working.
If I hit Home, the camcorder app seems to be running in the background and eats up battery like there's no tomorrow, phone is dead in a couple of hours at most. While the camcorder app runs, every other app that uses camera reports an error stating the camera is in use and to reboot the phone. If I reboot, and try to use any other camera app (from barcode scanner, to papercamera and so forth), it also does not work.
I have read on the issue quite a bit and here are the things I tried with no success:
- clear data for the camera app.
- pull battery for a while.
- install a new camera app and try it.
- use the voice recorder.
- delete all camera pictures and videos off the sd card and memory.
- try it without an sd card.
- gently press the camera to see if it was loosened.
I hope the camera hardware is not dead, and factory reset seems to be the last thing to try. Any ideas of a good way to record what apps I have installed so I can easily reinstall them after, or a backup/restore method?
Or any other suggestions on things to try? It worked fine up to Friday, then Sunday it had issues. Between Friday and Sunday I used my phone like normal and installed two non camera related apps which I have tried uninstalling to see if they were the culprits.
Root and install Titanium Backup. Use the batch operation to backup all of your apps (and data if you choose), then factory reset, see if the camera works, reinstall TB, restore your apps (and data), and see if it still works. The camera itself really can't come loose, at least not without losing the lens cover and quite a bit of force.
Hmm, did a factory reset and the issue continues. Any other suggestions? Or do I resign myself that the hardware is gone?
Since I updated OTA to 2.3.6 build 4.5.141, I have been experiencing a problem with the camera as it shows a black screen (both still and video) and crashes after that.
I am willing to root the phone and install flash a ROM if that could be helpful. I tried a factory reset, SD format/unmount, battery pull, reboot, and everything possible with an unrooted device.
Warranty period is over so I can't ask for a replacement.
Any help is appreciated.
Camera
I had similar problems with upgrading to ICS Roms.
I fixed the problems with installation of Videocam Illusion and ProCapture or FastBurst Camera. I don't know if it is suitable for your Rom.
The only problem I see now with these apps is that I can't open, let say, ProCapture or FastBurst and after any camera or camcorder apps. The only to get these apps to work is to reboot.
Not working
Thanks for your feedback.
But I tried installing all those apps but they all give the same problem (black screen, which later freezes). I tried changing the resolution of the camera and then the camera app did not open at all saying: camera unable to initialize.
Occasionally, it shows a large camera icon in front of the screen and then it just closes down saying 'Activity Camera (in application Camera) not responding.
I do still think it is a software (not a hardware) problem because the phone has not been exposed to any physical damage whatsoever and everything else works smoothly on it.
I am already considering getting a replacement camera but thought I'd exhaust all other options before doing so as it does take a while to get a replacement. Luckily, it is under warranty.
Thanks again.
Id you're looking for a good stock based rom id try nottachrix. I've been on it roughly 2 months no issues
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
Hi All,
Long time reader of the forum, finally registered an account.
I'm having an issue wherein the camera freezes and crashes while taking video in apps. Video works fine while recording using the camera app. I've noticed this while using the messaging app and vine. In vine the video starts recording for about .5 seconds before crashing.
I am rooted and using AOKP JB rom (latest). I would have posted in that forum but I'm not allowed since it's a new account (you guys are serious here). I've searched that forum, found a few related posts but no resolution. I have fully wiped, I have cleared app data. I think its a problem with a ROM or Kernel itself. Actually seems like a buffer issue since the video records briefly before crashing but who knows.
If anyone has had a similar issue maybe with another ROM let me know. thanks.
No one else has had this problem??
If there was another topic let me know, I've searched heavily but maybe I've missed it.
I'm just trying to determine if this is hardware or software (or kernel/ROM).
Can anyone confirm that they are NOT having this issue and let me know what software you're running?
Thanks.
The most reliable test of whether your problem is hardware or firmware related is to flash back to stock and try the video in the stock camera. You can make a nandroid backup and restore it afterwards to get back to where you are now.
On the stock GB ROM the camera works in SMS but malfunctions in some apps.
I just flashed the official JB ROM from samsung and everything works perfectly, so definitely software.
same issue here, for vine, snapchat, instagram.
Similar issue here, with a Samsung Galaxy 2 (SGH-T989D) running JB 4.1.2 with the official JB update, rooted.
Camera will work for 20-30 seconds and then the in-app video preview will freeze and the only way to get the camera to work again is to reboot. There is no zombie Camera process to kill. Fixing permissions doesn't help. Doesn't matter which app tries to access the camera, they all fail.
I've tried the diagnostics test (*#0*#) and have been able to determine that it's only the rear facing camera that fails, the front facing camera always works fine.
I tried various camera firmware versions (using the "Camera Firmware Standard" screen, *#34971539#), currently running version SEEH05. Other versions either didn't work at all or would perform equally poorly.
I thought it might be an SD card problem,
But after removing the external SD card, the camera performed even worse (crashed even faster).
On the other hand the phone is still under warranty from Telus, so I'm considering flashing back the unrooted ROM and returning it for repairs, unless someone can suggest something else to try.
Running PAC ROM (22.0 i think) from the ported development section and have the same issue with the rear camera but the front camera seems to work OK most of the time for Snapchat and such. A while back I tried one of the separate 4.2.2 camera APK's that's floating on this site and had the same issue still.
Has anyone tried the new leaked 4.3 camera to see if that works better/worse?
Not sure if this would work or not, but you could probably try.
Clear out all current videos and pictures on internal sd card(of course after taking backup), wipe/reset and then do a fresh rom install.
