I recently acquired both an X and an X2. Have to keep one and sell the other. I just moved from the Incredible, which has awesome development, so I'm a little spoiled.
Seems that the X is a little further along the development cycle (makes sense), but I REALLY like the screen, CPU, and GPU of the X2.
Do I keep the X2 and hope for more development (really wanting CM7 or MIUI), or do I keep the X, which already has some pretty stable ROMs? I worry that many of the Devs are just going to bypass the X2 and move on to a more dev-friendly device or on to the Bionic or something.
Please help me decide which to hold on to!! Incidently, I don't have to sell one off for another week or two, so there is a little more time to see if CM7 can come out for the X2 I guess.
I don't see much happening with the x2 honestly. I'll be selling my x2 once the galaxy s2 arrives unless we get a break in development on this phone.

Good im pretty sure the devs hate ungrateful people. There is alot happening on this phone. Only thing we are missing is the bootloader.

I Hate Ungrateful People, I Am So Happy And Appreciative For Everything Anyone Does ForThis Phone. I Try To Help Out By Either Providing New Information Or Helping Someone Figure Things Out So They Hold Onto The X2. This Device Definitely Needs Support To Sway Developers To Wanna Put Their Time In. Once Again Thank You To Everyone Who Has/Is Working On This To Make It Better For All.
its funny to me everyone keeps talking about switching from a new device to something even newer as if support for that will be any better every device takes time I'm sticking with x2 at least for another 5-6 months.

Guys, I'm completely new to both the X and the X2. I have no prior experience with either device, nor do I have a bias. I have read enough on all the various forums to see the hatred for one or both phones. Point is, I can only keep one of these bad boys. Like them both. Just hoping someone with more inside knowledge than myself can give me a better indication on future development potential.
From my fresh perspective on both of these phones, it is clear that the X has already had significant development (I love CM7 and MIUI Roms from my Incredible), and it seems like a gamble to hold onto the X2 because it may OR may not get to that point. Does this sound about right?? Again, not hating on either phone or community. This wasn't intended to be an "I'm moving on" thread. It's a "help me choose" thread. Thanks.

CM7 And BAMF Are Coming To The X2 "Soon"
It's Gonna Be A Couple More Weeks At LEAST Before We Are To See Either A Beta Or Stable Rom. I Hope That Clarifies What You Want To Know.

It does help some. It seems that one dev working on CM7 is needing some help though, and not getting it. That's what I'm reading into the posts anyway. No disrespect to the dev who's working on it. I just know that these things seem to require multiple devs working on teams. So if you can tell me definitively that CM7 will come, I'm a happy camper.

One Thing You Really Need To Understand There Is Nothing Definite With Developing. It Can Take Numerous Trial And Errors Before Done Or It May Never Happen At All.
we should all be happy that moto surprisingly did an awesome job with the GB update, it added so much polish that was lacking in previous builds and helped speed up our phones greatly. If you want MIUI so bad, there is a launcher that mimics MIUI ROM This phone has only been popular for like 2 months, that is NOT enough time for any development to happen lol so just get Rooted GB, Freeze Bloat, Supercharge this bad boy and if you want to run the MIUI Launcher and have one of the fastest phones on the market
It's really a no-brainer. The X2 is way above the X in performance. IMHO, it's the best phone that Verizon sells, unless you really must have 4G service. Both phones have the lousy Blur interface, but you can customize them, as you know, with aftermarket launchers and programs. Both phones have locked bootloaders, so not a lot of development.
There has recently been some increased development interest in the X2, however. Gingerbread (2.3.3) is the most recent OS, and there is now a pre-rooted version of Gingerbread readily available. As for ROMs, "Eclipse" is well liked and seems to be extremely well thought out. Most recent edition has done away with most of the Blur interface. More details here.
If you need to ask other peoples opinion on which phone you want.... don't pick the x2. Im tired of everyone whining. Don't buy just released gadgets if you can't handle bugs and lack of support. Wait! I have a great idea... sell both and buy an even newer phone that may or may not even be rooted yet. Yep that's a good plan.

Well that was rather immature and "toolish" ... just don't post if your feelings are that negative
On another note, I would say to keep the X2. It is a more powerful in all aspects.
X2 is one badass piece of hardware. Period.

Oh come on guys, this was by FAR the most useful reply I got
Seriously though, thanks for the input for those who actually took time to post something meaningful. I know the X2 is a great piece of hardware, but my rooted Incredible running AOSP was actually faster and more responsive than this thing is right now, so I guess I'm suffering from some withdrawl. I'll root, debloat, supercharge, etc and see how it goes. I'll probably hold on to the X2 and hope for the best because I'd hate to be kicking myself a month from now when CM7 and then MIUI get unleashed. Surely those two ROMs running on this hardware will perform better than my Incredible, not to mention better than the original X.
Of course, if development completely halts in a month then I'll probably just beat my head and cry for what might have been, had I kept the original X. Time will tell. I.....must.......be.........patient.............

I'm stuck with the phone for the next 18 months, so I won't let it die! How many possble character combinations could there be for the unlock code?
WOW, well the people who are complaining and moaning about not seeing much happening are welcome to leave, nitroglycerine is doing great things with what hes got and CM7 will be a gateway, I'd stick with the X2, it's got tons of potential and is definitely a top of the line device but everything that needs to be done won't just happen overnight, I would suggest hanging in there.

Agreed. As more development gets done more developers will get onboard, hopefully. And sooner or later, the bootloader will get cracked & then the fun starts. You'd kick yourself for missing that...& don't forget navendrob, thatdudebutch(team bamf ) & dragonzkiller are working on good things for us too.

Before i begin my rant, a precursor..This is not a post about the Devs not getting us unlocked BL or whatever may be... Far far from that.. My thanks and Enormous respect and gratitude go out to every single Dev and User who has helped not only myself, but every other user on XDA and other boards with the Droid X2.
The party seems to be over. I think the bulk of us knew, getting the X2 was more of a bridge in the gap til our next big phone, which I believed would be a 2nd Gen 4G LTE device. The droid Bionic hit today and yes, its obviously a much more robust product, kinda the same kinda different, then our beloved X/X2.
Where I live (Long Island) 4G is pretty prevelant.. I have used the Pantech 4G modem on a macbook and it got me 35 Meg down over air (6 meg up), which almost made me faint. This isnt about speed tho and the x2's lack of 4g..
The facts are the Devs are all killing themselves, trying so hard to come up with a way to make teh x2 better.. Untapped and unrealized potential we have in this device. Unfortunatley i dont see a light at the end of this tunnel.
Perhaps Ice Cream will save us end of the year, or Q1 of 2012, but thats doubtful. I came to the X2 on the sheer hope and belif that NVidia's Tegra 2 was gonna reign the supreme King of all processors on the mobile market.. Yet new phones are using TI more now. Why? Dunno.. Motorola has been hush as to why they didnt use the Tegra in the Bionic..
When i got the x2, as im sure most of you had, it was $199.. 4 weeks later its $99. Now its buy one get one free. Every since i have used smartphones (Since the old samsung SCH-i600 Win Mo 2002 phone), I have never seen the life of a phone come and go so fast..
Maybe thats my most annoying thins. It may not be true that the phone is Dead, or that dev will cease, but it sure as hell feels like it, don't it? Look at the facts:
-Hardly Any new topics across 6 different forums (XDA, DroidForums, Motorola, AndroidForums Etc).
-Buy one Get one Free (aka verizon saying PLEASE TAKE THIS OFF OUR HANDS)
I just wanted to get this off my mind.. I love my x2, it has been by far the best phone i ever had, not even CLOSE.. The surely untapped potential of this device, and its dual core capability + Nvidida 3d backing just leaves me craving oh so much more.
A few points in response....
1, I feel you pain a little bit. Im not terribly concerned about the phone itself because, I do like it (except for the damn music skipping..thats pretty annoying).
I also do not enjoy the lack of "chit chat" so to speak on the different forum boards. On the D1, I could make a comment (or a theme) and 20 minutes later the thread was on the 2nd page. I enjoy the communication.
As a themer, I enjoy making them but you are right here somewhat. It takes a lot of hours to make a theme and probably even more over the long run to maintain it. My D1 themes were downloaded 1000's of times. So far, as of last night anyway, my X2 theme has been downloaded 42 times. That makes it real tough to convince myself to keep doing it. Not a slam in anyway, just a limitation of the amount of X2 users.
I bought my D1 as a BOGO and it was over a year before anything came out that made people abondon ship en masse.
The Bionic and probably every 4G phone to come has a price point of $299. Tough pill to swallow when thinking about bailing on the X2.
Eclipse is pretty much the only ROM I use and Nitro seems to be banging it out left and right. I don't think hes going anywhere anytime soon.
Thanks for such a fast response honestly.. It's good to clear the cobwebs around here every once in a while..
You make fantastic points on all fronts.
I can only imagine the time and effort put into your themes and roms etc.. One for which i would never have the time nor patience to get involved in.
As with all technology, and myself being in the IT industry for over 20 years knows, that You get the best, but as soon as you get it, its not the best anymore.. I think what hurt most of all in this entire process, was after the fight and aching to get GB on the X2, its like that was the end of the fight.. Nothing left to look forward too.
The phone works. Every android device has software issues. We all know this. I think the thing every user here wants, is to know just how far and what this X2 can really do.. What happens if we put the pedal to the floor, will this thing burn rubber? Or have we hit the ceiling? Is this all the x2 has and should we months from now when our contracts start dwindling down, start looking at the future alternatives?
My comparison (to laugh), the X2 is like the old Commodore 128. Built on top of the Commodore 64, best selling computer ever, the 128 had promise.. Was faster, more robust, etc.. It never reached its potential because 95% of the time, it was being used in Commodore 64 Mode. Then we all went out and got an IBM.
i dont see the phone being dropped any time soon. it has the new dual core and gpu chipsets and its 100$. not everyone can afford a bionic. also 4g isnt in that many places. i still see people with droid2s. im sure there are people in the boat i was in. pretty much i didnt want a non smart phone for 2 years and verizon had this at 100$ why would you pass that up if you are tight on money
I hear ya, but its not really about not wanting one because of lack of 4g in your area or like that. Obviously the $99 price tag is amazing for what it is, but what i'm saying is that in the what, 4 months the phone has been out it is already shelved, being dismissed, and honestly slowed to a crawl any and all wonderful enhancements we were all waiting and anticipating.
Its the nature of the beast.. Every phone or electronic device goes thru this, i just can not remember one happening tho THIS FAST?
I was an Avid HTC Touch Pro 2 user on verizon.. That thing was honestly DOG SH*T slow since day 1, yet the community kept that alive for me for almost 3 Years of use, as painstaking as it was.. Roms, apps etc that just kept me wanting more and more...
I feel (and i don't think im the only one) like with the Lack of chatter, as a previous post said, the lack of push from motorola, now motogoogle, the locked device etc.. we are at an impasse. Its not anyones fault. It is what it is..
Maybe some of us thouhgt for the initial $199 (more like $320 after all the docs, extra batteries etc that some of us, like me, bought) and we would honestly have a solid year + of things to look forward too.. Instead, (and again this is just my perception, i may be 100% wrong, and or you can see it different) I feel like the development cycle has slowed down because no one can crack this sucker. There pushing us out the door like an after thought..
Hell Verizon ran that Father's Day X2 commercial, for what, 3 weeks maybe.. Not even 1 commercial about the X2 since (Except for 1 buy one get one free offer i saw about a week ago). Aka, Dismissed. Now i didnt expect Verizon to push the thing for 6 months, obviously.. but hey i thought this thing was a special peice of hardware.. C'mon, its NVIDIA ffs. The King of 3D Graphics.. I was (and still am) convinced that if anyone out there was to make a 3d capable device that could have an interface that wipes the iphone off the map, it would be via NVIDIA.
It could be me overthinking things, or just the fact that i Love this hardware... After years upon years of windows mobile bashing my brains to puree (i havent played with win phone 7, its suppose to be SALTY with the Mango update).. To have a device that WORKS is amazing to me still.. I just want more, and i want the users who share the experience with me to have the best possible usage out of a decice that deserved better then it has gotten.
I agree with subdivision. I have and am still having buyers remorse with my x2. The devs for this phone have been great and worked very hard to make this a great phone, but lets face it 4g is where everyone is going now. Not to mention making huge leaps in custom deving a phone truly takes a large dev pool, something that we just don't have.
We recently switched our family plan over to my brothers Wells Fargo corporate account, with that comes one year contracts and no charge for extra lines.
I look forward to next June when I can change this thing in for the next phone.

honestly a week or 2 ago verizon had nothing that was better than the x2 in my book with maybe the exception of the droid 3 but i hated the keyboard. now they have the bionic if you want to pay for it. i guess verizon just has ****ty phones
Ok I just got my DX2 Friday and I moved from the Droid Eris we spent 8mo to get a full working root for everyone s-on and leaked 2.1 users. Someone knows someone just like in our case who gave up an answer to what we were missing on vulnerability.
Has anyone gone outside of this forum to find Devs bftb0, TopazArron, JCase, Darchstar, rigmarts, tazzpatriot, punkaos, and zifnab06 these are all Super intelligent Devs/Hackers that I was in on the IRC with researching for months exploits.
Who do we have dev wise that has rooted a phone from a 0day? Are we setting up them an IRC server and letting only thoes members in? I see a lot of prommised money and that is all good but no traffic for a Dev to root a device is present. I am not aware of who found the current workarounds or if other exploits worked so if there are Devs active sorry didn't know just got the phone.
The Droid Eris had no commercial time at all I just found it cause it was cheaper than the Droid 1. Once an root was found the aboved mentioned move on to other devices but the Themers and ROM Devs steped in and are still going, all for a phone that isn't even sold anymore.
So instead of being all upset about it spend that time getting to know other devs from other forums and finding out exploits or befriending them to possibly work on our phone. I just tweeted Jcase to see what he is up to.
A good Dev will enjoy the challenge this Ef'n bootloader and Communist Motorola has created. And with the recent purchase of Motorola by Google could be a good thing, most of the Season Rooters have contacts in Google and could get info.
I just went to PM Jcase and he is currently active looking at the bounty page. Now since it is a bunch of people just offering money I would think if the second pot for a DX2 for the Dev to use has to be legit. They are going to have to have one or two if they do work on it.
I think our best hacker for x2 is navenedrob and he doesn't even own an x2 lol

Once again, i don't mean to be repetitive, but please do not take this thread as a "OMG THE DEVS ARENT DOING ANYTHING JUMP SHIP" post.. Totally not my intent.
Voicing my frustration at Verizon, Motorola.. and to a lesser extent NVidia and Google. No phone is perfect, again we all know that. This device COULD be one of if not a TOP Tier phone for the next 2 years if the proper people and channels got together and did something about it.
First off Verizon could have really pushed the Dual Core Phone as the future, and heads above the rest, since it out benchmarked every phone they had almost 5 fold.
Motorola could have been seen as a savior, instead of a villain, by giving us that true open source Option.. Unlocked Phone, Choice to remove Blur etc..
Google could have gotten off its pile of huge money and stock and said "Hey, we don't like how you are using our OS on this device, that has to change Pronto"..
NVidia could have said "Hey why are you not taking proper advantage of Our Tegra 2 chipset to show really what this bad boy can do?".
What IF's.. Thats all we have had with this phone.. What iF it was unlocked.. What IF both cores were truly being used correctly.. what if.. what if.. what if..
Our phone is a Very Very good phone. I Love it.. I have tailored it to suit me SO well that i honestly wouldn't change it for any device short of maybe the Galaxy S 2 only cause that seems to be the phone thats making everyone go gaga.. but i will say the Simple reason i didn't get a thunderbolt or wait for the bionic was the scary 4G battery life issue.
My upgrade was available in MARCH. I waited until JUNE to get the X2 to research and make a proper educated decision, along with my friend Ringo was was an AVID X User, and how much he loved it. I said OMG X + Nvidia = JESUS REINCARNATED AS A PHONE!
Maybe if anything, maybe my post can somehow get a snowball rolling down a hill. Maybe it will or can motivate that bunch of people to come out of the woodworks and say, u know what, this thing really deserves to show what it can do.
If in any way i could help this community, hardware, software, money whatever was to my ability, i would in a heartbeat.. only because i believe in every single user who visits XDA and these forums as users who truly are INTO their devices and only wants the best for the user base.
I prey a year from now, we are all on some great custom rome, running ice Ice Cream Sandwich and saying my god how this almost 2 year old device is still one of the best phones on the market.
I'm with ya Sub, we were probably shopping phones about the same time. When it became clear that the bionic was a ways out I plunked down my cash for the X2. It was a big jump coming from my trusty TP2. I would have to say that my TP2 was the best phone I've had. It was FAR more stable than this thing. My wife is about ready to throw it out the window when it crashes and reboots at night and makes the famous "drooiiid" sound and wakes her up. Coming from winmo it seemed like android was the way to go since WP7 was going to be completely locked down. I have been disappointed to see how weak android is out of the box, and to see that I can't even do a wifi hotspot with this phone (at least without paying).
I do think that there's some light at the end of the tunnel though. I've seen a LOT more marketing for the X2 in the last couple weeks. Yes, they're selling them cheap, and they're doing BOGO, but they're doing the same thing with the Droid3. So I don't think its dumping excess hardware. Hopefully its building user base and with more users they'll fix some of the phones problems. Verizon sent me a trade-in notice offering $100 or more trade in for a bionic, so if I pitched a fit maybe they'd let me in on one of those. I considered it for a short time, but 4G is pointless for me for probably years. And I really do like the docks for the X2, I just wish they weren't so buggy.
I think I'm going to try to hang in there for a while, and hopefully we see some progress. Maybe somebody will even figure out how to get the thing to play an mp3 track without skipping.
Thanks man..
There are 2 people here in the boat with us.. Those that are under contract who HAVE to wait for something new, and those who aren't but love the X2 to stay with it...
I for one wouldn't change it right now as i love the phone, i just want it to succeed where others have failed, and truly take advantage of the hardware we were given.
I still want to know why motorola only put 512M (or 414 whatever) in this thing, which just made ZERO sense to me... With ram being so available, and So cheap, why not toss at least 1GB, or 2GB.. Set it apart.

Lol right, the bootloader killed it, and everyone's busy with the 4g's thats what going on, vzw pushing 4g the "thunderbolt" No one cares about a dual core... I mean the d3 is deadish too, Bionic might save it, cuz it has same processor, but moto's dead atm, sh-t battery etc
I have PM jt1134 from the Fascinate forum. An effort to try and get another dev possibly interested in joining minds with others here. He's well respected there but I'm not sure of his interest here, if any. It's worth a shot!

I don't think bionic has Tehran. I believe it is TI omap
And moto is mum on why they didn't use tegra. Is it possible that ia where our buggy music problem resides? Since they don't seem to wanna admit that either
I'm pretty sure the tegra 2 didn't get along with 4g. That's why it was scrapped 9 mos ago.

Yeah, d3 has a ti
Honestly I wouldn't worry about this phone fading away man it has a lot going for it. I mean we have Nitro w/ Eclipse and Naven whom is going to uploaded all atrix ports which I am looking forward to (esp alien rom). I know someone is working on getting CM7! We have 2nd init going for us now, and if moto keeps true to it's word an unlocked bootloader soon? As for the switch to TI I think it has something to do w/ the partnership w/ Google. Yes the Bionic has a tad more power under it's belt, but nothing earth shattering imo. The newer blur probably coded better, but I want a full AOSP experience anyways so I'm not too worried about that.
X2 pretty much carries the specs of the Bionic concept I think? The Tegra 2, 512 MB of DDR2, qHD, it just lacks 4G which I could care less about since I have a 100 mbps connection at home. FFC I could care less about either, the 1GB of RAM woulda been nice though. I still love the X2 though it's GREAT as a phone, best in call quality I've experienced in awhile. So don't worry the X2 will have development and will be around for awhile.
I think the responses in this thread give us all reason for future hope, granted its not blowing up XDA, but it still shows i think some true and viable interest here.. It was and is a downer to see lack of new threads, and just overall activity for our beloved X2, hence why i think i created this tread..
Stirr the pot.. Kick the tires.. See if the motor is still runnin or are we about to get sent to the junk pile.
Here is what i would love to happen in a perfect world:
Unlocked Bootloader (DUH)
A myrad of custom roms of all walks and versions of Android
Customization like the old Win Mobile devices
True dual core coding and usage of apps and the os
Freedom to truly take this thing to a new level.
Freedom is the key.. How is it were on an open source device, that is basically closed thx to Motorola.. How can google not be really P.O'd about that?
I believe in this user base, especially those here @ XDA, where honestly the true and best mobile programmers, coders, and customizers seem to come when things are happenin the way it should.
For all the trash people talk about this device, if someone ever cracks the bootloader you know for a fact were gonna have 50 devs and 5000 people jump on this phone overnight

I'm really pissed at Moto for locking this bootloader while other manufs go ahead and unlock theirs. Seems we're screwed! I've got a couple days yet before I lose the ability to return this thing and am stuck with a very developer UNfriendly device for the next couple years. What to do? I'm not a huge ROM'er but I definately like to tweak and I don't like to envision everyone getting toys/tweaks/tricks on their HTC's,LG's,Sammys, etc etc while us poor souls on the Moto side get screwed over. I have a Droid Charge with unlocked bootloader and it still gets no development. I still thoroughly enjoy the phone though. Of the phones on the market, the razr is the one I like best. Moto knows how to make a smooth fast phone with great reception.
If you're a rom junkie, go for the nexus. However if you're patient enough, keep waiting with us till the bootloader gets unlocked and enjoy the full potencial of the Razr.
You should do a side by side comparison of the RAZR next to any other phone... that's what I did before buying my RAZR... I like having a removable SD card and HDMI out... the battery could sway you but I think with the maxx coming out someone will produce an after market cover, after all the battery isn't soldered in like the iphone is... I personally love the quality of Motorola phones... as far as development goes, I wouldn't let the locked bootloader get to you, I had my DroidX for 2 years with a locked bootloader and I still had quite a few roms to flash, doesn't anyone remember 2nd init? I'm sure the RAZR devs will find a way around the stupid bootloader... in the meantime everyone get into operation mosh, and let big red and Motorola know we mean business... I love my RAZR, I personally have a lot of faith in this product, I'm actually looking into learning how to develop for android just because I want to help anyone who takes up the torch to develop for this awesome device

Nitro is working on Eclipse. Once that gets released, you will be glad you kept the razr.

Can I ask what eclipse is? I'm kind of having the same feelings as the OP. I'm looking for a reason to keep my razr, but some of the other devices are calling for me.

The only thing the locked bootloader prevents different kennels from being used. There are two or three roms out now plus a deodexed or two that you install with the bootstrap.

I can tell you this. I tried out the Nexus for about a week, and took it back. While I LOVE ICS, the phone itself SUCKS. Esp next to the Razr. Slower, horrible battery life, cheap feel, lackluster camera...I could go on and on. I am pissed off too but it is still the best option out there so far.
Sorry for this extremely newb question. This is my first dabble in the Android world, I've always been an iPhone user since moving from dumb to smart phone.
I've been using the Arctic ROM for last couple of weeks and the latest version makes me never want to go back to the stock Rogers ROM. Now here's the question - given that even without an unlocked bootloader, one can still relatively easily flash a new ROM using CWM, what's this big deal about unlocked bootloader. Also what's special about this ever so elusive custom kernel that has been mentioned?
One of the biggest problems I'm seeing with the locked BL bs is that it appears to be scaring away developers who would rather go the easier route and develop on a unlocked machine. Yea you might get it to work on the Razr but it takes steps A-B-C-D-E and who knows how much more for the devs to get it working as opposed to A and B with a ULBL. Look around...we've got very very little in the way of development or ROMS....
If ROM'ing is really important to you, you really ought to get a GNex. Even if the bootloader does get unlocked (which is up in the air, since Moto's broken that promise in the past), there will be far more development for the GNex.
I got the RAZR for the killer hardware and the smooth user experience. I don't know that I'll ROM this even if they do unlock the bootloader, and I was a ROM junkie on my OG Droid.
ICS is rolling out to the Motorola Xoom tablet this weekend. The RAZR may be only a week or two away from getting ICS with a hardware accelerated GUI. That aside, it's a great phone - terrific reception, loud speakerphone, excellent voice quality. You really want to give up all that?
Oh, and a new thread just broke: The poster says he was contacted by the FCC and they are charging VZW with violations for having a locked bootloader. Hmmm...

I pray that you are right. Though I love this phone more than any other phone I've had before (HD2, HD7, Sensation, G2X, Bionic), it's killing me that I can't mess around with it. I paid top dollar for this prostitute. And I want to do whatever I feel like to her, regardless of what her pimp says.
Any word if the ICS update to the Xoom this weekend may have unlocked their bootloader? I know this was the thought and hopes of some for the ICS upgrade coming to the RAZR.

Sorry, I have no info on that.
the xoom already had an unlocked bootloader from the last update from what I can tell as on the motodev website, there is a file to relock it if needed

I'm rather new(6 months in) to the scene of flashing roms and sbf'ing and scripting and this sort of stuff. My question is this, since the Razr is Motorola's latest creation and it is said to be getting ICS starting today with an update, will this update play any role in possible development for a full blown ICS AOSP based rom (similar to CM7, I would guess) but with the elements of ICS all in one place. Without having to piece it all together to just look like ICS. Any insight on this would be cool to hear. I'm just curious, and can't upgrade until 2013
Thanks.

sir, first off you posted on the wrong forum, dx2 android dev, i ask a mod to move this to general
and tbh, i have no idea if this would affect us, but i do know the razr has an omap ti chip compared to our ****ty, locked down tegra2
I thought about where to post this and development seemed suitable. Sorry if I broke some rules or something, it just seemed like it might get more attention here being a development question and not just a general question.

which i fully understand, sir, but i dont think the razr will help us much, because of the chipset
I guess I should have clarified more, now that I think about it, I was thinking more like, would it be possible to take the pieces out of the ICS rom for the RAZR and some how incorporate them into the one of our current roms? Just different elements of the SBF file or systemui.apk. Like I said, I could be blowing smoke and sound completely ignorant about the topic, but I'm just gathering thoughts is all. And please, no need to call me sir. I'm a noob here. lol

it is my understanding that the Razr got ICS by searching project CHEESECAKE

This is kinda sorta what Dragonzkiller is doing with CM9 except he isn't pulling things directly from other systems.
I don't know how much alike the phones are but I'm willing to bet that at the very least the razrs framework might be worth glancing at.

Quick Answer: Not like you are thinking??
We won't get Official ICS, IF dzk ever gets the time away from class, we will see a PORT of cm9(which is ICS), but we will probably 'never' get ICS or any ICS Based ROM for a while. Too much stuff to do and not a lot of devs...also, personal life gets in the way a lot over on this end of Android.
It looks like the RAZR is already on the verge of taking the back seat to whatever Motorola/Verizon have on the horizon (Droid Fighter). I get an upgrade next month and have my fingers crossed in hopes that a variant of the HTC One X will come to Verzion (I would settle for an HTC Droid Incredible 4G at this point). This locked bootloader will be the death of development in the foreseeable future, if anything. Motorola makes solid hardware but doesn't want to us to play with it. It's a damn shame.

True its a shame. The locked bootloader is a big reason I gave up on my X2. The possibilities on the phone could be endless if they'd unlock it but that will never happen cuz Motorola is Big Reds B$%ch. But dragonzkiller still might pull it off for u guys with cm9 in his spare time, and hopefully he will.

It's been said already, but there is no way in hell the DX/DX2 are getting ICS from Motorola. Dragonkiller is probably the best bet and I know he mentioned in another thread he had lots of personal life stuff till at least summer.
Simple answer: No one should be buying Motorola. Send them a message. The Galaxy S III should be out soon and HTC has a decent quad core in the pipeline. Stop buying Motorola phones!
My DX2 does run better then my DX did but that's only because of DK's CM7 port. If VZW's insurance company did not give me the DX2 for a replacement of the DX I had, I would have never owned this phone. It sucks you have until 2013 but with any luck a CM9 p
ort will get done. In 2013 if the world has not ended yet and the time finally comes for your upgrade, I hope you remember Motorola screwing you and not buy another Motorola device. Don't buy into the owned by Google thing, they are still the same company and play by the same rules. Have they removed the encrypted bootloader? No and they won't because Google may own them but they are not interfering with any of Motorolas business practices. Also don't forget Google has become VZW's b*tch lately too so don't expect Google to stand up for you.

Although I'm half-way flattered about your comments about my work, this is posted in the wrong forum.
The X2 will never get official ICS and my CM9 port is the only ICS ROM that will probably ever be released for it. Maybe AOKP if I were to ever get the chance, but who in the hell ever knows.

Wow. I can't believe it's been this long that I've had this phone. The DroidX2, MB870, or whatever you want to call it has been a huge part of my life for the past two years. As strange as that may sound, you all know that it is true. I was sitting at my desk today, staring at it plugged into my computer when nostalgia'd hard core to the first day I got this phone and did the same thing. I thought back to all the things I went through for this phone (and for you guys) and how much I've learned. It's been through hell and probably worse but all in good fun.
I know that I had never really been a "consistent" developer by any means. Dropping in and out of chats, disappearing for months on end, but one thing that never left my side was this phone. When I got it back then I knew that I wanted to hack it, play with it, develop for it, change it, mold it, whatever. And I think I did just that. Not as much as a wanted to, not as much as I think I could have done, but boy did I have fun doing it. I remember building CyanogenMod 7.0-RC1 on a really old Toshiba with a Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM just trying to figure out how to even begin to make a ROM for this phone. It was painful. I remember my first SBF attempt failed because I didn't have my battery charged (now I have two phones and 3 batteries).
The first real thing I did was trying to tear apart the SBFs from a few similar phones and looking through the CDT tables for any answer to unlocking the phone. We never did find that answer (well... maybe, but that's a different story) but I wasn't going to be discouraged. The first real development effort I put into the X2 was with navendrob porting over the pull down settings from the new (still Gingerbread) Atrix ROMs. I tore through smali code, XML files, copying and pasting chunks of code from all over. And then, it happened. I got the pull downs to show up and work. I was incredibly excited (and I showed it all over the IRC) of what I had accomplished. Although this wasn't the first real effort on the X2 as keep in mind that many of us were using Eclipse at the time, I was incredibly happy that it was the first real development for the X2.
SIDE NOTE: I'm incredibly proud of nitroglycerin33. He took his experience from themeing (theming?) the X2 and brought it out to be a widely used ROM on MANY different devices. So props to him for achieving more than I have.
I went on to try to work on getting real ROMs working on the X2. This was around the time we started getting 2nd-init working (the magic behind most of the Motorola ROMs at the time). I remember the first time I got it working. All I did was set one property (something like does.this.work=1) and seeing it show up. But besides randomly popping up in the forums, I started working on ClockworkMod Recovery (which I barely got working, but never fully functional). At this time I created my Twitter account and posted this picture. The date was November 16, 2011 (wow). But I knew that I had to get 2nd-init working better before I could fully get CWMR fully working and updated everyone with why it was so hard to get working.
So I set out to get CyanogenMod actually working from a complete build from scratch (not some hacked Atrix thing) and I posted my progress in the development forum. With the help of my guinea pig Moonshadow-NM doing my actual ROM tests, I watched as we slowly got to the boot animation, and to the home screen. You cannot believe how excited I was. There were so many flaws, that it was barely usable, but I was so happy (I think I scared my roommate from all the excitement). I slowly worked out the kinks, and it's still perhaps the most stable ROM that the X2 has (although I love Jellybean and won't go back to CM7 despite the issues I have).
And the rest is history. I remember holding "release events" for my ROMs. Teasing everyone with new updates, features, fixes, you name it. The IRC chat room would be packed with people waiting for me to post the link. And I was excited to see where we would go. And even if we didn't go very far, we still went on (mostly) as a team. Through ICS, and now JB, I tried to provide what Motorola refused to give.
So this is my thank you to all of you. Past, and (very few) present. You all have helped me through my craziness and issues with this phone and I can never thank you guys enough for it all. I never thought I would have "internet friends" but you guys sure as hell came close. This isn't the end of my adventures with Android. I will be getting a new phone (hopefully) in the coming weeks/months and I want to be a vital part of that development community also. I'm keeping my Java/C/C++ skill sharp still by writing a JNI app. I'm not going to release it as it's mainly just for experimental purposes, but it allows me to practice those languages while focusing on SQL database integration, cryptography, and JNI integration in Android.
So from one X2 guy to another: thank you for all you've done, all you do, and all you will do.
Peace,
dragonzkiller
Thank you so much for all your hard work for the x2. You truly made it greater than Motorola could have. The x2 has had a great community with some great people. It was great seeing you make all of those breakthroughs. Honestly, even after you get a new phone, I'd not be completely surprised to see the tweet, "KLP on DX2", lol.
Anyway, thank you for all you've done. Many people have come along and talked big games, made promises they couldn't keep, went all Melvin on us, etc. You've talked very little game, but always made/make big deliveries.
Thanks for all of your work DZK. I've tried walking through your foot steps with a 4.2.2 port I got working TWICE, but haven't gotten it working again. I hope to someday be as good as you

I'm glad to see this post from you DK. It IS weird to think its been that long. As one of the users who was around back then, I have to say that it was fun seeing the DX2 move from Android version to Android version, even though this phone was stuck on Gingerbread in a lot of ways. Without you, this phone would probably still be stuck on 2.3.5. I have moved on from the DX2 and am in other sections of XDA now, but I will always think of the DX2 community to be the best, most helpful community there was/is. So not only thanks to DK, but thanks to all the DX2 users who made this forum enjoyable to be in. Its like your teenage years...you wish you could go back to that better time, but you know you just cant. At least we have the memories. Cheers.
Thanks DZK you really made a difference in my android hacking skills so to say. I remember contemplating on getting the Iphone 4s over the droid. Days after i got my X2 i found this site and tried CM7 for the first time. His roms inspired me to make my first port. This was the best fourm even though we didnt have stuff like and unlocked bootloader. The Razr M forum im at right now has NOTHING on this. Good luck on your adventure with a new phone! Bye!
dzk you've honestly brought me into my first realm of custom rommage. even though I've moved on since the dx2 I'm still excited by being able to look back on what you accomplished and was able to bring the dx2 to a whole new realm. being able to follow the progress of cm7, cm9, and now cm10 has been an exciting little journey that you and many of the other users (whether devs that were part of your "team" or the regular users like myself). all of you guys kick major ass and are awesome on your own rights. so a huge thank you to you dzk, and the og users who have made this bastard phone's forum awesome!
Its been a great experience with the roms you developed. The Dx2 was my first android phone and no matter how many phones I changed to or roms I load up, it will never compare to how I felt when waiting for a link to pop up with your new / updated peice of art.

You know I have move on also just recently as most, but I still have my X2. I am saving it for my son to show him with a good education and a little knowlege. He can accomplish almost anything, I never left CM7 needed the stability of what my phone offered for my sons memorys. I never tested the waters of developing. Just a few xml, png, changes to fit my desires.
You have a great deal to offer I hope it takes you far. I still check the X2 threads for new development just because I know you still play with it can't wait to see you hit the "Big Time" with your Talents. Good Luck and Thank You!!!!
It really has been over two years! My X2 had the search button wig out exactly 1yr and 3 days after I got it (3 days out of warranty) back in may 2012. Verizon nor Motorola would honor it for being out of warranty. I moved on then, but still checked back as this community is the first android community I joined.
I went through an HTC incredible and a LG Spectrum. Both were nothing compared to what you did with the X2.
After a little tinkering of my own, I got the X2 back up and running. (Took some soldering and precise hand movements to get the search button to work again. When a hardware key malfunctions, the phone will only boot into safe mode). I still use CM7 on my x2 (as an mp3 olater or a GPS unit) and it is on par with this Rezound in speed and responsiveness...
Sad to see you go, but happy you are moving on to bigger and newer projects. Best of luck on your new adventures.

Dragonzkiller, you made life fun with the X2. CM7 was awesome, as was Eclipse. Kudos for giving Nitro some props as he deserves it as well.
What you did, though, was awesome, Writing the image from scratch and making what was a damn stable ROM for the X2. I kept swapping back and forth between CM7 and Eclipse on the X2.
But, like you, times changed and I moved on. It was time for an upgrade and I needed a phone that had a better upgrade path, so it was with that I moved onto the Droid RAZR MAXX.
I'm still running that phone and probably will for some time since that was my last upgrade available to me. Currently, CM10.2 is being developed for it (4.3 kernel) and it's pretty stable.
Many thanks to you and to ALL the developers out there that put in so much of their time and effort into releasing things for us minions to run on our phones. I've learned a lot about how Android works, but with my full-time programming job, I've never had the time to actually learn it for myself. I still plan on doing so, but it just depends.
In any case, this is why I love the Android community. It's never a dull moment, and definitely, with the X2 and the entire bootloader unlocking fiasco that occurred that one night and caused Ash to go into a drunken tirade on Twitter, who can say the X2 was boring?
BTW, I say with a heavy heart that I no longer have my X2. Wish I did, but I traded it in at Best Buy. Got $75 out of it and used it towards getting my daughter her upgrade to a smartphone. Sadly, I couldn't convince her to go Droid. She went with the fruit, so I guess that's one failure for dear old Dad. Well, two because now my other daughter went to the fruit tree as well, even though I had her use my old OG Droid RAZR until her upgrade came up. I guess she got teased too much since all her friends had iP... oops, almost said the naughty word. You know what I mean! In any case, I do miss the X2. Might have to pick one up one day on eBay or something just to tinker with. Still have my crappy LG Vortex, which was my first Droid phone. I can't even give that one away!
