hey folks,
I've been trying around to get a tool working which does count my internet stats.
I've already tried the following ones:
- netcounter
- 3g watchdog
- stats free
- traffic monitor
My device is a galaxy tab 10.1 p7500 (3G) latest stock firmware. rooted + cwm (no custom rom). Does someone else has a similar problem? It's counting Wifi data but not mobile ones. it's not displayed as zero but something like 68KB and I watched videos (connected to mobile data, yes! ) and run varios other applications with internet connection required such as mail, facebook, etc.
Thanks for your support
hey guys,
nobody else having this problem? It wouldn't matter that much at the moment but my internet flat is limited to 300MB HSDPA, afterwards GPRS/EDGE ... so I would like to have an overview about how much data I have used.
Would appreciate if anybody could help me out and let me know if I should test some stuff.
thx a lot
I have a unlimited plan, so i have not tried using counters, but i will try it for you.
EDIT: I tried 3G Watchdog and you are right, it doesn't work. So it seems that data counters are not compatible.
I have another problem, on my device it seems that the signal strength display in asu is stuck at 4. DBm seems to show the correct value but asu shows always 4. Can you please check what yours shows?
thanks for your reply.
same for me. dBm changes but asu shows always '4'.
on my DHD asu is changing nearly everytime. same for the galaxy tab 7" with android 2.3.3 of a colleague, asu is changing and also counters are working.
have you tried installing and using netcounter or something similar on your device?

Thanks for the info, i'm glad to hear that it's not a problem with my tab (or at least i'm not the only one with this problem). Hope it can be fixed with a future software update.
No i haven't tried any other data counter apps, but if 3g watchdog doesn't work, i'm sure none will work. This is either a problem with Honeycomb or Samsung modifications. I'm going to try and search and find out if any other people with other HC tablets have had such problems.
I have the verizon model and used 3g watchdog but now switched over to verizons app. Both worked for me and are pretty accurate when compared to my bill. Just sucks i dont have unlimited.
Tried 3gwatchdog and it was not counting... will email the dev.

that would be awesome to have a fix for that!
also found a german blog entry yesterday that it's a known problem but there is no fix yet
if someone can read german:
http://www.android-hilfe.de/1437639-post1.html
I searced a little, it seems these apps work on Xoom, so it can't be a Honeycomb problem. I found people are having problems only with European GT10.1 and GT10.1V, so it seems to be Samsung specific problem.
In 3G watchdog there is the option in settings to "Use pre-Froyo traffic counting interface"

already tried that, will not help!
would be really nice to have a fix for that because even there may be users which do not have a mobile data limit ... there may be some that have one
same here. cell data not counting. using traffic counter pro. maybe the incorrect interface have been selected. couldnt fi d the correct one yet.
Same here. Let me know if anyone has a option. It is not fun browsing in the dark (not knowing where my data plan is)
Will a custom ROM solve this maybe?
Vissie
Seo fixed it over in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 V section.
To bad that he has the V version and not the normal.. he is a great developer..

New to android and I'm looking for a network traffic network meter that works on the galaxy s.g. I have tried 5 from the market and every one gives a different reading, some nothing at all. Any suggestions got what you use and how much you trust it.

I use 3G Watchdog and it seems pretty accurate.
I had two of them,
Data Counter Widget, Traffic Counter. They both were pretty accurate but the first one was more.
Regards.
3d watch dog was a no go for me. did not see any cell data activity at all on my phone..
no idea why.
traffic counter see my wifi and can track my tethered data but for whatever reason is very hit or miss with cell data.
so far the only ones that seem to be working are "traffic statistics" and traffcounter ( it reads 20% less than trans stat) and data counter widget, but it reads a lot less than the others 50% and it see none of my tethered data (which is only about 15-20%)
i read that the Gs2 had issues with traffic counters.. and for me it does
im still looking..

In 3G Watchdog, go into settings... all the way to the bottom.... uncheck "pre-froyo traffic counting" as gingerbread is after froyo. BAM... Problem solved

3g watch dog does not seem track tethered data. And has some issues of counting accurately if you turn off or change the access point for cell data
One problem i found is that 3g data is added to the wifi counters. Only edge/gsm is shown on the mobile interface.. :-(

I've tried them all and none of them are accurate you always have to keep manually entering inn what you've used after you checked yourself.
Hey, everyone. Using your AMAZING n00b guide and overall lurking of this website for several months since January I've done quite a few awesome things with this phone. Currently I am running Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0-Ba2tF-Olympus (any further information how I got there can be provided if necessary). I'm having a slight issue though. I've noticed that sometimes I'll randomly have no data or cellular service what-so-ever. To gain access to data and cellular service at that point I will then have to restart the phone, wait for it to boot, turn on WiFi, wait for that to connect, use an application like Browser or Facebook to test connectivity, if data transmits then I'm good, then AND ONLY after I go through all that can I disable WiFi and connect through regular data and cellular channels. I was wondering if this has happened to any of you and if anyone had any idea on how to fix it?
If you need clarification I'd be more than happy to try and sort my explanation out for you.
Thank you all in advance and I hope to hear from you soon!
Hello,
Did your APN settings are good ?
You can found it there : Setting / networks / Mobile Networks / Access Point Name.
Where are you from, what is your carrier ?
Regards.
I am thinking you need to flash a new radio.
Hi guys
Just got my S2 from USA and while using a 3g sim the data connection does not activate HSDPA (the H icon does not come out). On my Xperia Arc this comes with no problem.
Anything I am missing?
Am using my S2 outside USA.
Appreciate your help.
What does the phone display by the signal bar?
Alot may depend on the carrier you're using. Make sure the phone supports all the bands that the carrier uses.

Sounds like an APN issue. Copy the APN settings from your working device to your S2.
One of these links may be of help.
http://www.androidonhtc.com/old/carrier_network_settings
http://www.unlocked-dongle.co.uk/Se...-settings-for-mobile-broadband-operators.html
There is no icon on the bar. I have set up correctly the APN setting. Funny thing is that I can get connected on HSDPA on my other SE Xperia Arc and I get the H icon on this one.
The network option cannot be opened too.
I also tried the code *#301279# to change the HPA setting but to no avail.
Whats wrong?
Sound like you should talk to your carrier and see what they have to say.
In the meantime search online for known apn's for your carrier in your area.

Hi again.
As far as I understand my carrier does not deliver the band that my S2 requires to get connected on HSDPA mode.
Was wondering if rooting can be a solution? Am not really an expert but know the basics.
Any recpmendations/advise?
Thanks!

If it doesn't support the bands, it won't work.

Is there somewhere to see what the different signal icons look like? I used to get the little H on my Captivate (rooted and ROMd), but all I see on the S2 is the little green/red up/down arrows. I'm literally 100 feet from the cell tower and get blazing network speeds, but never see any H in the taskbar icon. Would be nice to see a reference of what the icons look like.

I think that if you decompile the framework-res.apk it contains the images, might be systemui, not completely sure

I was hoping for an easier way since "decompiling" is beyond my skill set.

You don't exactly have to "decompile," only extract using apk manager. Easy as pie instructions my signature (image replacement). Decompiling is for code editing. Extracting the apk gives you access to its images.
Hi Guys
Just to make it clear, my 3g does not connect data connection. Am still stuck with my S2 with no data connection while all other things work fine. What to do?
Need your HELP!
Thks
Did you check to make sure packet data is enabled in the Settings? I thought we already determined that your phone won't work on the bands available? Did you contact the network provider as you were told to do?
SOLVED!
Here is the case
My friend Sami just ticked the roaming case and voila the H+ icon poped up.
My understanding is that AT&T(with its factory OS) had blocked the network and by ticking roaming the s2 understand that by roaming you get the data connection. This might be another case.
Would be great if you guys can enlighten this situation.
Thks
Hi all,
Is it possible that my WIFI usage somehow faultily gets counted as data usage(3G), in any android device, particularly in Galaxy S2 I900?
I know it sounds silly, but here's what happened:
I just got 3G activated yesterday.
Through WIFI i downloaded about 600+ MB of data (Sygic)
Through 3G I browsed 2-3 small YouTube videos.
Today when i contacted my carrier (Vodafone India), They say my data usage is about 700 MB in last 2 days. That looks like my WIFI + 3G usage.
Hence this doubt.
Does anyone know of anything like this happening before?
Also, is there any way I can analyze my data usage for the past 3 days?
Now I have learnt my lesson and installed MyDataManager from android market, but it can only analyze data usage from the day of it's installation. Is there any other way I can analyze previous data usage?
PS: I swear I did the download through WIFI. I could see the WIFI signal strength indicator in my status bar. Neither the e(edge) nor the H(hsdpa) was seen.
Please help.
Thanks.
Network cannot charge for data downloaded over WiFi they do not know what WiFi you used . WiFi and network data re separate components .
You made a mistake and did not use WiFi but mobile data .
WiFi signal on and Data in use .

Sorry, im pretty sure i used WIFI.
That's the reason im asking, is it possible that due to some fault in the device, it will somehow log the data downloaded through WIFI as 3G data, because unless there is some fault at the device's end, the network couldn't even know of our WIFI usage.
Also would it be possible that the device does an auto switch from WIFI to carrier data (due to any reason like weak WIFI signal strength) and fails to reflet this on the notification bar(still shows as WIFI on the bar)?
Has anything like this happened to anyone? I just want to cross check before I contact my carrier further. Anyways once i get my connection logs from carrier, it should show the server from which data was downloaded and that should make it clear.
>> WIFI signal on and data in use.
Is this possible? Doesn't the device switch to WIFI whenever its on? I thought WIFI takes priority over data by default
Pretty sure yep thousands if not millions say that when they get a big bill from the network . Network measures data at source and charges they dont get the data from your phone and charge you .

Is it possible that the phone shows as WIFI on the notification bar while it is actually using carrier data?
I don't have any issues paying the bill if i have done the usage. I just want to analyze what happened here so that it won't repeat again.
I am pretty sure the notification bar had only the WIFI symbol and not the data indicator. since i had 3G activated recently, i was very conscious about it and watching it quite frequently.
Also previously i had similar over billing issues with my carrier and they promptly gave a reimbursement upon thorough analysis of the situation. so carrier mistakes isn't also something unusual.
I don't know how old your signature is but if you are running ICS rom then you can use built-in data usage monitor (in settings) to verify the volume of data used.

After much analysis and discussions with the carrier, I have finally found out the issue.
As pointed out by jje, the usage has actually happened at my end.
The WIFI had become unavailable many times in between the download, and the download had switched to carrier data.
To avoid any such occurrences again, and to help people manage their data usage better, I have compiled a simple list of best practices here:

Thanks mate... I have tried 3G watch dog and many more apps.
I find My Data Manager more likable.
It's simple, free and has all the same functionality - it notifies when ur usage is reaching threshold.
One good thing about it is that it stays cleanly in the notification area. When you pull down your notification bar, you can see it there, it shows 2 horizontal progress bars indicating 3G usage and WIFI usage each. It also shows number of days left in your bill cycle.
Pretty handy
Hi,
my data connection doesn't work.
when I unlock the sim I get cell reception. The data connection icon changes between unconnected wlan and '2g' back and forth and then stopps at the wlan icon. Obviously it struggles to connect and fails.
What can I do? Where are the apn settings?
Version: .80

Release notes :
Mobile data is generally not supported, data is available via Wi-Fi only. However, for instructions on how to enable 3G on devices, please see the following G+ post by Ricardo Salveti.
At the end of the comments Alan Pope says that this thread is 'outdated' and 'shouldn't be used anymore'.
And Tony Espy claims that 'Network Manager should take care of auto-connecting your mobile data connection'.
...
sorry then. i can't set it up either. what really confuses me are the different channels . for example trusty which is ubuntu 14.04 sometimes has less features than the saucy channel (comparing by diferent screenshots i've seen) and i don't even know what proposed and customized means
sorry if this is off topic but how do you have trusty r80 when the last released rivision is 79 (according to my dual boot app)
The trusty-proposed channel contains the 80 image.

this might help out a bit . trusty proposed is now on r100 which should have more features than r80 and according to this it should do fine
edit: i just installed r101 and still can't see anything related to mobile data except the switch.
Same with 105.
Got Vodafone Germany btw.
r106 should be the most stable cause it has passed 402 tests ... doesn't say anything about data though :/
