[Q] Rooting Issue....after reading 30+ posts - Streak 5 Themes and Apps

Hello friends: I'm attempting to root my EOL Dell Streak 5. I have read sveral dozen posts, tried unsucessfully (with variations) to install , and now I am here.
I feel I am missing something really obvious...this is what I get after trying to install:
SuperOneClick v1.7.0.0
Killing ADB Server...
* server not running *
OK
Starting ADB Server...
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
OK
Waiting for device...
(this is where I turn on my phone that is plugged in, debugging mode)
OK
Pushing rageagainstthecage...
error: closed
FAILED
(sigh....)
The exact steps I am following are here:
1. Get a copy of Super One Click 1.7.0
2. Turn off Phone
3. Start Super One Click BY RIGHT CLICKING ON THE PROGRAM AND SELECTING "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR"
4. When the program starts, check rageagainstthecage exploit
5. Click Run in Super One Click (do NOT turn the phone on yet)
6. When Super One Click says "waiting for device", plug in phone and turn it on
7. Wait for a while while the phone boots up. Tons of messages will go by. Sometimes it looks like it is hanging. It is not
This is an AT&T Streak, 2.2, build#15697.
Any advice or direction would be appreciated.

Use Gingerbreak instead
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13086954&postcount=1

The latest gingerbreak method has been reported to work on the Streak. This method uses an app installed on the phone. It originated as a way to root Gingerbread, but also works on Streaks with Froyo. If you have an AT&T Streak that does not allow non-market installs use Sideload Wonder Machine or install a non-AT&T ROM for unlocked phones.
If you are pulling your hair out and can not get SOC to work for you try the superuser.zip method. It uses Streakmod Recovery to flash the files needed for root to your phone. This is my preferred method. It has worked well for me on BB 345 and BB 351 and if you are on an AT&T Streak you don’t need to sideload an app.

That's odd. Gingerbreak didn't work for me on 351, but Super One Click 1.7.0 did!
Go figure.

Yeah, YMMV. I prefer the superuser.zip method myself.

Ive used soc 1.7.0 first time....but I like the superuser.zip the best....its the easiest

Root for 2.1 OTA Updated Phone???

Hello all, I'm new to this site and I've never rooted a phone. Actually, the Eris is my first smartphone. I've read a lot of forums about rooting the Eris and from what I understand I shouldn't have installed the 2.1 ota update. I bought this phone soon after they were released so maybe I have a 1.47 hboot? I'm unsure how to check this, but if so does this mean I can root using the 1.5 method?
I just bought a class 6 8GB microsd card with the hopes of installing a custom rom, overclocking, and installing apps2sd. Now I'm getting very discouraged because it seems 2.1 can't currently be rooted.
Hopefully a senior user can help me out. Please put your response in lamens terms. I've seen some other forums where junior users are getting bashed for asking stupid questions so I'm putting it out there....please don't bash me for this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684049
everything you need and more. To answer your next question. As long as your phone was never updated with leak, the process for root of 1.5 and 2.1 are the same.
happy rooting!
Thanks Spencer! If I root using the method at that page will I be able to flash other roms or will I be stuck with this 2.1 ROM? I'd like to install the evileris rom and (again I'm a newbie) I don't want to end up stuck like the people who installed the leaked 2.1.
you should be able to flash a custom rom to the phone as i believe you have to first load a custom recovery image to it. i could be wrong though just a guess.
SDK Not Working?
HELP!! I just rooted my phone, installed java, installed SDK and I can't get the command prompts to work. I followed the steps exactly (or so I think) and I'm opening sdksetup.exe. When I try to type I get nothing. Am I opening the wrong file or doing something wrong. I've not been able to install the recovery or custom rom to my phone yet, so I'm very vulnerable right now. Any ideas anyone?
Ok, maybe this is my problem...
Before the root, I could go into device manager from my computer and I got a yellow exclamation mark. After the root, I cannot find it. I can click on portable devices and it shows an Android Phone so I'm guessing my computer doesn't recognize it anymore. If that's the case I probably need to update the driver for SDK to work, but I need to find the device for that to work. I have USB debugging on. Any help is appreciated.
If it says android phone with no exclamation point that means it is recognized. Its when there is an exclamation point that means it is not recognized. I probably won't be able to help you further because I'm a rooting noob (I've only rooted my Eris and I had no problems) but I am a computer expert and I would suggest rebooting your computer and then trying it again... unless you already have.

Ok, calm down its not the end of the world, i ran into the same problem. What we need for us to help you, is at what point are you in trying to root your phone. Do you have SDK installed and updated?
I'm following the how to root instructions. I've completed I: Gaining Root and made it to 9. In II: Prerequisites. Java and SDK are both saved and extracted on my c: drive. I downloaded the USB drivers package in #6 of II. USB debugging was enabled and the phone was set to charge only. When I opened device manager on my pc, their was no yellow exclamation like the instructions indicated. I clicked on "Android Phone" and attempted to update the drivers found in SDK but Windows said they were up to date. I moved on to step III. Flashing a Custom Recovery and saved the zip file to my SD (should I save that to my c: drive?). I extracted it to tools in Android SDK and attempted to use the command prompt in SDK. It was unresponsive. It did not recognize my phone. I'm unsure if it does that automatically, if I need to take action, or if I should use the pc command prompt.
I went back to #9 of II and tried to troubleshoot. I tried every way I could think of to get the exclamation mark to show up in device manager so I could update the USB drivers. I hooked up my wife's unrooted Eris and it had the exclamation. I restarted my phone, restarted my computer, reflashed PB00IMG.zip and still had no luck.
Anybody had this probem? Any suggestions?

[Guide] Rooting Your Dell Streak

I take absolutely no credit for anything in here. I am simply re-posting the guide developed by Paul O'Brien at Modaco since I figured it will be a valuable resource for new and old members alike. Without further ado, I give you Paul's Streak Rooting Guide:
Introducing.... Superboot!
Superboot is a boot.img that when flashed, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK by ChainsDD). No need to flash the system partition, no need to use ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just flash the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!
The story behind this superboot is a little bit different to what has gone before... normally a Superboot is created based on a leaked ROM, but this wasn't possible on the Streak. What happened in this case is that I managed to find an exploit to give me root, which in turn allowed me to dump the device to images and create a Superboot image. This can be flashed because the Streak has a relatively open bootloader. This is pretty handy because it means that I don't have to reveal the root exploit... potentially saving it for further down the line if Dell choose to lock down the device a bit more.
APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Before download, you should check your device 'about' screen to determine which build number you are running. Although the Superboot may work on other builds than that for which it was designed, I cannot guarantee that!
Superboot (tested on build 3883) - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire Pro) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: 110e69808dc5145d1d0fca80f0d9ecb5
How to use Superboot - Windows, Linux and OSX
- Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory
- Put your device in bootloader mode - Unplug the device from your PC, remove the device battery, then replace it and turn device on with the camera button pressed. Select the 'fastboot' text on the top right, wait around 10 seconds then plug the device into your PC. The screen display should change to 'FASTBOOT MODE'. If it doesn't, repeat and retry (it's a bit temperamental!)
- WINDOWS - double click 'install-superboot-windows.bat'
- MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh' followed by './install-superboot-mac.sh'
- LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh' followed by './install-superboot-linux.sh'
Note: Be careful what you do now you have root! We don't as yet have a recovery image or recovery flash (but will soon), so if you badly break it, you might have to wait for a bit.
That's it, job done! Enjoy!
P
PS Although the Superboot image is 'insecure', the Streak seems to be blocking 'adb remount'. I am looking into this now, but in the interim you can remount system by using 'adb shell, 'su' then 'mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system'.

Fantastic
Glad this root was nothing like the X10, Paul got it within a day I think.
Looking forward to flashing new ROMs!

you need to get your head around how linux works really to understand this.
there's various degrees of permission granted to "users" to do various things (such as access parts of the operating system or file system)
Root is the boss, or "superuser" and has access to all these.
most devices don't come "rooted" because of a)potential security breaches b)you can mess up the device if you start mucking about too much
this is from the first g1 so is a bit old now, but the theory is relevant

SuperBoot - SuperQuick
This is an awesome root method, by far the fastest root i have done on any of my devices. I think the most difficult was trying to root my Magic [with perfect SPL on 1.6] which took me around 6 weeks of trying. This method took around fifteen minutes to make sure I had the correct drivers then 'click' and youre rooted.
Looks like this still isnt in the states yet so rom production will be slow to start with.
But hey - ROOT!!

If this is the same as the Nexus One... if you have a modified recovery then you wont be able to install the OTA update.

So when we hear that an OTA update is coming we need to go back to stock recovery? Or stock recovery and stock [unrooted] ROM?

Just wanted everyone to know that I have successfully rooted my AT&T Dell Streak [US] using the method posted at the begining of the thread. However, I used the r2-4399-streak-superboot.zip found here: http://android.modaco.com/content/d...-4399-how-to-root-your-dell-streak-superboot/

LED Always On
Rooted my Streak as above. The LED behavior has changed. The LEDs now flash during activity and the menu LED remains on even when on battery and the display shut off. Any one else see this one and/or have suggestions? Thanks!
Also experiencing light flashing after rooting
The button illumination has changed to oscillate between the middle and bottom buttons when there's activity.
Anyone else seeing this after rooting?

I found a post (search with Dogpile for "rooting the us streak") which detailed how to open device manager, select update driver, and select options to change the driver. This driver may be in the superboot file you have already downloaded. Anyway, once I changed the driver, it worked. (although I have the changed LED behavior detailed above. Do the web search and you'll find the post quickly. Hope this helps!

[Q] LG Vortex

Does anybody know how I can flash a custom recovery to this device? I have already gotten it rooted with the method for the Optimus. However any attempt to flash a recovery sets it back to default, it retains root, after the reset, but will not allow for a custom recovery. I know this isn't an awesome phone and I have a D1 that I use, but have been given this as a work phone and would love the same freedom with this device.
bump! I've had the phone for a month now, and am looking to try some custom roms now. doesn't appear as though cyanogen or clockworkmod support the lg, or do they?? It looks like the first stumbling block is the recovery image. Anybody know a way to backup the ROM on this phone??
what did you do to get you LG VORTEX rooted? i have tried several different ways to no avail. also my phone updated to android 2.2.1 is there any way to roll it back to 2.2 so that rooting may be easier?

Rooting hasn't really happened for 2.2.1 on the LG Vortex. You have to roll back to 2.2 to root (use the z4root, search the forums on how to use it). To roll back, check out the downgrading tutorial on breakneckmod dot co dot cc (I can't post links yet, but I feel like this one is necessary and doesn't constitute spam). If that seems a little hard to follow, or if you don't feel as advanced a user, there's an updated, more step-by-step, hold-your-hand kinda thing (which will take longer if you already know what you're doing), check the latest post on technoheads dot org.
You don't need to roll back to 2.2 to root this phone. I rooted it with no problems using Super One Click with rageagainstthecage. You may need to turn the usb debug mode on and off a couple times to get it to take during the process. After you see the message that you have succeeded you need to reboot your phone. Then you're good to go.
I just rooted with the latest update.
Unzip the SuperOneClick archive
Put the phone in debug mode (I had it in modem mode and enabled debugging)
using adb push psneuter to /data/local/tmp
then do
Code:
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 0777 ./psneuter
./psneuter
adb shell
id
if the last command says uid=0(root) then you are temp rooted
close out of the shell and do
Code:
adb remount
adb push su-v3 /system/bin
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app
adb shell sync
And you are rooted
Looking for a rom for the lg vortex
i need a stock ROM that i can use ROM Manager to install that will let me use the wifi hotspot i have it rooted
I used ARoot
Just rooted my Vortex running 2.2.2bFRG83G, using SOC. Apparently LG made it easy with their modem drivers available on their website. The only "trick" that i did (and was not documented in rooting procedures) is to enable modem mode in the USB connection chooser menu (with USB debugging of course).
I rooted my LG Vortex using Gingerbreak, but I had issues flashing the recovery. However, I did it using ADB and it worked wonders for me. I even have a custom ROM on the device now. I tried CM7 on it, but I kept getting random force closes, especially when going into the settings to try to change some things. I did find another one (Lightning) and it seems to be pretty stable right now.

I root my phone using SuperOneClick and then using something else (I forgot) to automatically install SU. I did have problems to start with using ADB but by reading and RE-reading the forums, I learned how to use it correctly. I then started deleting unwanted apps using this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=617026). Now some of you may have noticed that I didn't say anything about doing a backup.... that's because in my hurry to kill those few apps, I didn't do a backup. Well, now I want to start over from scratch because my home screen freezes and force-closes way too often. Where can I get a backup from?

Can't root retail Streak 2.2.2

I have been trying to read as much as possible before posting, but I am finally out of answers. I have a retail Dell Streak 5 unlocked running 2.2.2 build 17397, ver. 360, baseband GAUSB1A136000 that I have been trying to root for a while. So far I have tried SuperOneClick and Gingerbreak since those are the highest success methods. SOC won't allow me past step #5 and Gingerbreak hangs in the "rooting" screen for over 20 minutes until I give up.
I have tried Gingerbreak by installing from SD and direct via e-mail. The debug USB option on as required and the SD card formatted and mounted. I met the SOC Windows XP (only PC available at this time) requirements of .NET as well. I thought I would post all the details of my phone to see if you guys can see something that raises red flags. I have been reading around and not many people had ver. 360 at the time of rooting.

Manii's link details the only rooting method that has a 100% success rate: manually installing StreakMod Recovery then flashing Superuser.zip. One-click root solutions may be very successful, but the tried and true methods are infallible.
Thanks Strephon and Manii. I was wrong in thinking that StreakMod could only happen when rooted. After I got StreakMod on, it was gravy from there. Thanks for that link!

Unless something has changed, which is entirely possible, z4root uses the rage against the cage exploit which only roots FroYo. The generic 2.3 tablets are usually rootable with Gingerbreak or another program that roots 2.3. Try Gingerbreak or something similar.
If I were to get a tablet, I'd get a well known one that is already rooted with some developer support. But that's totally your choice, just giving you something to think about.

Tried gingerbreak to no prevail. Im posting on the Gingerbreak thread to see in anyones got any ideas. But i followed all the intrux but no dice again.
Thanks though plainjane!
Hi, got the same tablet.. yesterday...
found nothing online on how to root.
I can confirrm that Gingerbreak isn't working !
Not only does gingerbreak not work but i havnt been able to try superoneclick as i dont know if there are any usb drivers for this device.

check with this forum for the haipad m8, which contains a vimicro chip. To root the tablet, it is necessary to do a mix of gingerbreak and adb instructions :
ad hoc usb drivers may be available
http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/haipad-m8-vimicro-vc882-t10830.html
I have also a VIMICRO VC882 tablet but a 7 inches version with 5 point capacitive touch. No luck so far rooting the device. Gingerbreak does not work and try to do something with Super One Click it's impossible because no driver is installed for the tablet or the one that it's installed only allows me to share files and nothing more.
Any ideas?? Gingerbreak reboots and installs superuser but rooting it's not successfull.
the funny thing is i bought the same exact tablet from the same seller (McBub) and it came to me already rooted, but it strange, most apps (like root explorer) will say no root, but super manager makes the SU dialog pop up and from then on i have full root access, but alot of apps says that my tab is not rooted, maybe because i really didnt have busybox on it, but that im not sure.
i have tried doing a factory reset from recovery (turning on while holding down Menu button) when it was done i installed super manager and enabled the root option in settings, then the SU dialog pops up allowing super manager full root access, like i said this tablet is strange but im happy for the most part, after all it's just a small tablet, we need 12 billion more TO RULE THE WORLD!!!!![/evildramalizations]

It would be great to get somewhere with this. Super manager does get full root, but nothing else.
EDIT: Ok, sussed it.
Run Gingerbreak and let it reboot.
Use Super manager to navigate to /bin. It will use superuser so you can edit files.
Once you are in /bin rename the sim link "su" to whatever you like. Save and exit.
Use gingerbreak 1.20 again and it now works - install busybox. Mine is now fully rooted without connecting to a PC
The link to another site posted earlier gave me the idea - he used adb but super manager works a treat.
