I was wondering if it would be possible to.develop.an android
App that exploits a phones transmit and reciever to make carrierless calls direct
From mobile to mobile.
Sorry if I wasn't clear on the last post.
Let me elaborate, now that I'm sitting at real keyboard.....
I don't know enough about how the hardware in modern smartphones work,
but it seems to me that all phones have the capability of transmitting and receiving signals.
Has anyone thought of developing something that can make use of this without using a carrier in between?
An app that can transmit and receive directly to another mobile that is in radio range.
There are many apps that support various forms of communication without carriers, but they depend on bluetooth or wifi.
I am talking aout an app that uses the phones GSM/GPRS/ETC radio - the one that has enough power to reach a cell tower - only it's designed to be picked up directly by the other phone (provided it's in range).
I guess what I'm trying to find out is if an app can be developed to turn my fancy smartphone into a "walkie talkie" or "2 way radio".
The advantage is free calls when in radio range.Hope this makes sense and someone can point me in the right direction.
You mentioned push to talk which there are apps for that just go to the market and type in push to talk. Although I believe they require a carrier access. Although there's Google voice that if your within range of WiFi. There's free apps called text for free. If you go to related apps there might be something there. I'm not a hundred present sure if its possible. But hopefully with my suggestions it might help you find what you need

I just found the app that I think you are looking its called cb radio chat. It's a new app if you have problems the developer has his email on the description so s/he must have no problems finding a solution to what ever problem you might have.

For the past two days or so some of my apps like Pandora nd Youtube have stop working while I am connected to 3g. No issues with wifi and I don't have 4g where I live to test it. Is it our phone?, Sprint 3g network or the apps fault? Anyone with any insight has an answer?
On another note my gmail is having a hard time opening attachments generated by Microsoft office like excell and word. Again is it only me?
Thanks.

You need program that can open Ms stuff. Gmail app doesn't have that kind of functionality. The other answer, look in general section. There's answers there. I'm tired of typing out what you need to do. Proxy crap.
Thanks. Next time if you are too tired, simply don't answer.

Give the Sprint technical support team a call from a landline at 1-888-211-4727 or stop into a Sprint corporate store. There is a known issue with both the HTC 4G handsets in which any app that streams media data may sporadically fail. There is a temporary solution in place until a manufacturer release corrects it. Sprint's technical support representatives can push a soft patch to your handset which should correct the issue you're experiencing. It's called a soft patch because if you have to hard reset your HTC EVO Shift 4G for any reason, the patch will have to be repushed to it. Tell the technical support representative/retail store employee to type CEBU into their internet browser and they'll see the tool they need to use for the push. As far as the gmail issue goes, I'm not sure what may be the root of the issue as MO files don't seems to lag when opening.
Greetings all,
Yes, I have searched...
Is there an Android app that functions like MSVC only a little better? MSVC is a standalone application that requires NO carrier bandwidth to perform it's duties. I am considering a switch to android away from WM6.x. I have found MSVC useful on WM and don't want to loose this kind of capability. Again, I am looking for a standalone app that will not use any service outside the phone (except the connection to the BT earpiece of course). All the 'apps' I have found when searching appear to use Google or other services that, while powerful, force more bandwidth consumption($$) among other things.
Hopefully,
Peter
Cyberon voice command is the only one I'm aware of.

Actually it's not the only one. Try Vlingo which is default application used in Samsung Galaxy II. Works pretty good and better than Cyberon, much better

Bluenote73 thanks, but as I recall cyberon requires some Google service - indicating to me that it is not standalone...
Emt thanks also but again, Vlingo also seems to rely on network services. This from a review:
The first thing to note is that the application needs network access for faster processing of voice commands. The data usage is quiet low averaging around 1MB for over 150 voice commands.

There are times I need to rely on functions in my phone even if there is no cell service. Only a standalone App will fulfill this requirement. Yes, it may be that the data used is small but thankfully, 1 or .1 still does not equal 0!
Thanks,
Peter
Well, it works fine without data connection. Just try it out as you won't find anything better at the moment!
emt:
Glad to hear it! I will certainly try it. The devil is in the details with these things and sadly, precious few want to spend any time on them.
Thanks for your input.
Peter
You're welcome
Well, m1c4d0, I tried and it doesn't work! It will only if wi-fi is connected (I am avoiding a data plan -opted out on my account -ATM) and when I turn wi-fi off I have no VC. WiFi on = VC works.
This is disappointing. MSVC was far from perfect but was functional - for me anyway - and that on a device with far less power. I used it on both the Tilt and the Fuse.
Sadly,
Peter
I'm new to using NFC and discovered that apparantly there are issues with transfering data between different platforms (android to windows) and sometimes even between different versions of Android. Has anyone come up with a way to transfer files between different platforms or does anyone have any tips and tricks to make the best use of NFC? I know NFC tags are probably the easiest answer, does anyone know of the best tags or where to buy them? Thanks!

Can you please explain what you mean by issues with transferring data? Like what kind of data? NFC is for like sending contacts to another phone by tapping them together. NFC tags are pretty cool you can program them to do all sorts of thing from enabling WIFI when you get home or disabling it when you leave. NFC isnt for sending files back and forth from phone to phone... as far as im concerned you cant use it from phone to PC.
Sorry not to be clear on that. I'm referring to transferring data such as pictures and videos between android and Windows phone 8. I've also read that some different droid phones have issues doing this as well.

I'm also curious about NFC. I've never used it before and don't see any kind of app or settings regarding NFC in the menus. How does this stuff work?
It's actually easier to use than I thought. All i did was browse to a contact or webpage and then touch another NFC phone. Once you make contact you'll see your screen change at the top to say "touch to beam" just simply tap the screen to send. That assumes that you have NFC turned on in Settings > More. Also be sure to turn on the Check box for "android beam". My problem was that I thought we could transfer pictures and video from android to windows phone but apparently we can't do that yet, only android to android for that stuff.

Ah, the Settings > More part is where I'd missed it. Thanks!
Yea its really simple android makes it super easy and all you gotta do is turn it on. Currently not too much is supported by it because it is a newer technology give it another year and more stuff will be using it

I saw another thread about hiding apps in some guy's wife's phone to track her. I'm looking for something similar with my wife, but it does not need to be hidden. Mainly to be used because I commute quite a distance and this would let her know how close I am to home (rather than having me text while driving). Similarly for her when she's travelling.
Just an app that would:-
1. Allow me to see where she is (and vice-versa)
2. Use GPS if on, otherwise fall back on net information
3. Not use SMSes (some sort of internet-based communication between phones)
I could probably hack something up using Tasker but her phone isn't rooted like mine is so the capabilities for GPS etc are a bit more limited (and time is limited, of course).
Thanks!

You can actually do this with the built in google maps application. It's called local/latitude. You can share where you are and control who sees it an when. Go ahead and look into it. Much better then downloading another app IMHO.
See here: Google search latitude android
Thanks, yeah I know about latitude features but it seems to lack a way to "ping" the other party with the equivalent of "hey, I've reached road X"

Use an app called Backitude from the Play Store. Latitude updates pretty arbitrarily on its own. This app allows you to control how and when it updates, and also let's another person force an update on your phone by sending an SMS. It's all Internet based except the update triggering part. You can also use the tracking features of Cerberus, another app in the Play Store.

First off: If this kind of request is not allowed on XDA, or if I have this is posted in the wrong area, or if there are any other problems I haven't thought of, please let me know and/or delete this thread!
I would like to request that someone with the skills and know how please make a very small modification to a free android app for me... I know a little bit about coding, but I don't have the know how to decompile, edit, and recompile and android apk, but I know enough about coding to know that the actual change I would like to make should be fairly quick and easy to do.
The apps (two actual, since there is one phone and one tablet version), (SlingPlayer Free for Phones) and (SlingPlayer Free for Tablets), is a video streaming app for a device called a Slingbox which hooks up to your home cable box to allow streaming of all your home cable TV channels. The app has a feature built into it that allows you to check a box in the settings to limit the bandwidth used over mobile cellular internet connection to 1024 kbps so that it doesn't burn through all your mobile data really fast.
Basically what I want, is the exact same option but for limiting bandwidth over WIFI connection (by adding another check box to the settings, or even just making the current check box apply to both cellular and wifi if thats easier).
The reason being, is that when I use the app on my wifi only tablet via Mobile Hotspot from my phone, it sees the connection as wifi (of course) which allows it to stream at full speed which burns through my data way too fast, while not really providing any noticeable difference in streaming quality. I know there are apps out there that allow you to limit bandwidth at a system wide level, or even on a per app basis, but I've tried almost all of them and for whatever reason they just don't work as intended and cause the video stream to get choppy and buffer all the time. The cellular bandwidth limiting built into the app doesn't ever do that when enabled.
Also, just is case anyone is curious, I actually do own the paid version of the phone app (which I bought at a price of $29.99 back when it originally launch on Android! It's only $14.99 now). I'm only asking for a modified version on the free app because, though I'm not 100% sure on this, it just seems wrong to ask someone to hack and modify a high priced paid app, even though you'd be adding a feature, not removing anything... And I have also contacted the makers of this app repeatedly asking for this feature to be added, amount other things and bugs I'd found in the app, and they refuse to even respond, so I can't get any help out of them. Been trying for almost three years now.
I may be able to make a small donation to the person that adds this feature for me, if desired (and/or if allowed?)
Have you tried contacting the author of this app? What he said?
