It depends if the ROM includes a kernel or not. Check the OP of the ROM you want to flash.

I'm not sure if you can install it with the stock recovery because I use the ClockworkMod. You should just get Rom Manager from the market and flash it. It's simple. For Ext2 you can use it on a stock kernel fine with OCLF in the market. For Voodoo (Ext4) you need to flash a kernel that comes with it on a Rom that supports it. Like Bionix.

Whoops. Learn something new everyday. It didn't work for me on stock JI6 though, so I figured you needed a compatible ROM.

Bionix fusion 1.1

To run bionix fusion 1.1 do I install bionix rom and the fusion 1.1 kernel? Or is the kernel part of the rom? Or is the kernel the samerthing as the rom?

If you downloaded it from the team whiskey website, it should come with the kernel designated by the name of the file (Stock, JAC, or KK). If that's the case, you don't have to flash a kernel separately.
All Bionix roms come in kernal flavors....they are built into the roms themselves.
Pick the version you want--BE CAREFUL OF VOODOO--for future flashes you will need to disable it. Don't forget or you will be in a world of hurt to fix it.

I have been told that yes, the nandroid backup will backup the kernel as well. My wife's vibrant has the hardware lock fix and it didn't overwrite it when I flashed Bionix 1.9.1 so I would assume you won't lose the fix either, just try to get into recovery or download mode via hardware after the flash to see if it stuck.

Removing kernels

Is it possible to remove a kernel such as glitch or Bali without reflashing rom?

You could find out what the kernel the rom you flashed came with and search in development for it inside the bible. Download it and flash in clockwork. Think you wipe davlik and fix permissions after flash. you can flash new kernels on top of old ones won't change your rom.

Use sgs kernel flasher from the market. Back up your current kernel and flash whatever one you want. Just make sure its compatible with your rom and you should be good to go. Only takes 2min and you'll be done. Good luck!

It doesn't hurt but I never did. Just flash the kernel and let your phone reboot.

Change kernel on stock ROM

So, I installed stock 2.3.3 KPW, the newest firmware. I suppose that my phone would work better if I installed a new kernel. Can anyone tell me how to do it and can I even do it on KPW? I read about CF-ROOT but it's a little complicated.
Complicated or not, cfroot is the only custom kernel we had for now. If u already read about it u should already know howto install it.

But KPW works just fine with stock kernel. Anyway, you can flash CF-root if you want without any problems.
I just did and it all went fine. Converted to ext4 and voila, its faster and now I have BLN. I got almost 1600 in quadrant(which is of course irrelevant).
i thought u can use cwm to install stock rom back...am i wrong?

I never bother. Just makes the boot longer. I would only do it if you run into issues with an app, and even then I would just clear that app. But to each his own.
Ok. Thank you!
