Phone powers down or restarts on its own. - Motorola Photon 4G

i swear i have the worst luck. haven't even had the phone a day and already i went to check the time and the phone was off and wouldn't turn back on, had to pull the battery. now just a few min ago i felt a vibration in my pocket so i took the phone out and it was starting back up "starting services". it must have rebooted in my pocket.
if i go back into the sprint store for this they are not going to be happy to see me again after all the strings they pulled to get me into this phone after being well out of my 30 days with my 3d.
Edit: i just went to sprint and they tested the battery and said it was bad. maybe that's why it was charging so slow? hooked up to the charger the phone died while using it. that seems way too slow right?
Edit again. The new battery didn't fix my problem.

Ask for a new back cover. There have been numerous post about how some back covers are not a tight enough fit allowing the battery to break contact which results in a reboot. Sprint appears to be aware of this as there are reports of stores having spare back covers to give to people who request them.

mine had the updated cover with the rubber/foam inside. the phone was faulty, they replaced it and it looks like the problem is solved.
last night when i got the phone and i put it on the charger i started using it and it sucked the 15% of battery out when on the charger. i started charing at 7pm and by 2 am it was only at 50%. pretty sure some thing was wrong with the phone. this new one charged up in about an hour.

Mine does the same at random times of the day.... went to sprint and they told me it was a software bug... that sound right to you guys?

Mine has been fine since it was replaced.

I've had my phone reboot first thing in the morning when I first turn it on. When it happens, it reboots twice and then no problem thereafter. It's done this three mornings so far, rebooting twice each time. It's happened both before and after rooting. I wonder if it has to do with being fully charged and reboots until its no longer fully charged. Luckily it's not every morning and it's easy to live with until the update is released. I know we have the leak, but I'm waiting for the official update.

ok cool ill look to replace mine then.

I had the same issue with reboots when I first started it up after it activated it would restart few times. Then today I had 60% battery life left and I powered off the phone and started it up again it said I had 3% battery left. Not sure whats going on. Also I am having bluetooth headset issues. My top of the line motorola finiti constantly loses connection and has to regain it. I have also experienced the call audio issues on several occasions. Unfortunately for me I was given this phone by Sprint and can't return it for another device. My only recourse is to wait till Motorola comes out with a firmware update.

Shutoff EVO 3D, won't charge or Turn on without battery pull!!

This problem started tonight. I just returned my first EVO 3D on Monday morning, because of problems. I am on second EVO 3D. The first EVO 3D I got on the 24th had intermittent charging problems, where the light wouldn't go on all the time, and had problems charging. It turned out to be a bad port. I had no problems exchanging that EVO 3D. The second one seemed to be fine all day Monday and shut down and charged with not problems Monday night. Today I used it all day and just went to shut it down just like I always do, and plugged it in to the charger. No red light came on at all. I said, oh no, hear I go again. I went to turn on the EVO 3D and nothing happened. I would not start at all. I decided to pull the battery out and put it back in after a minute, and, of course, everything is fine now, at least for tonight. If this happens again, tomorrow night, Wednesday, I will bring it back to Sprint for one last exchange. This time I will try another Sprint Corporate store, instead of the one I got the first two. Hopefully the third time the charm. After three exchanges, I will give up on the EVO 3D, and probably wait until the Motorola Photon comes out. I really hope this doesn't happen, because I really don't like BLUR and I do like the EVO 3D.
Anyone else who had this problem in the last few days, are you still having this problem or have you already exchanged it?
I am hoping this is a one time thing,
Try turning fastboot off. It's under power in settings

On some phones, there is an issue where if the USB cable is plugged in, you won't be able to turn on the phone. Had this weird issue myself, but realized it's the USB cable.
check your mem card.
if you've had 2 devices do this I'd say the device is not likely the issue.
or its possible this was patched in the OTA updates
try it without your mem card
change your usb cable
change your outlet your using.
i had the same thing happen to me within an hour of getting my phone on launch day. took it right back and they swapped it out for a new one.
they said i was the only person this happened to, but i said check the internet, its happening to others.
they tried the taking out mem card, new mem card, diff cable, pulled the battery out and put it in a new 3d and it worked, so its not the battery, letting it sit for a while, nothing.
i think something just fries on the motherboard and kills the phone randomly, but if it doesn't happen within a few hours or so of you getting the phone you should be good.
I find it real funny that people are so butt hurt when things happen to a phone when it first releases lmao. Come on now its new tech you guys go through all the trouble of exchanging things when it doesn't work to your liking when you should know off top that it ain't gonna be perfect when you first get it.

when you say "aint work to your liking", you know were talking about not working at all right
I had a defective one that kept rebooting and i was using it on the charger. The finally it stopped rebooting but then screen would stay black but still backlit after Sprint message. Sometimes you just get a defective product out a bunch since things are made in bulk you usually find out in the first few days while charging. Happens on a lot things. Haven't any problems with my second. Btw photons tegra 2 isn't even close to as powerful as the Snapdragon 3 so you would be getting a lesser phone months later.
This happened to me earlier today. I powered it off to save battery for later since it was getting low. When I went to turn it on... it just wouldn't turn on. After pulling the battery, it turned on right away.
The first EVO 3D that I returned on Monday only had an intermittent charging problem. I never had a problem of it not turning on, it just would not charge at times. The one that I got as a replacement, brand new EVO 3D, worked great yesterday, with no problems. I shut it down like I normally would do at the end of the day. The battery level was at 20%. I plugged in the battery charger (HTC one that came with the phone) and nothing happened. I then switched to two different outlets. Still the same. I got a different USB cord to see if it was the cord. Still the same problem. I had a travel charger, and tried it to see if that would make a difference. Nope, it still didn't work. So, that is when I decided to pull the battery. After pulling the battery and putting it back in, everything worked fine. I did notice that the phone was warm last night after extensive use of the phone all day. My daughter and I put it through the ringer, testing all the different features, ie, games, pictures, movies, internet, email, music, etc. The battery life was actually great yesterday. I do have the Otterbox Commuter Case on the phone if that makes a difference.
This morning after recharging, the phone turned on with no problem. I will have to see if it does it again tonight, or was it a small glitch. I guess this is why I have a 30 day return/exchange policy. I did do everything that people had suggested. I put in a 16 GB 6 speed microSD card in it, and tried the 8 GB that came with the phone also.
Problem might be caused by Update!! Read My last post.
A little update. I was on the phone with Tech support about the problem of the phone not starting up and the battery pull was the only way to get it to work. So he wrote down all the of what I did. He had me shut the phone down to see what would happen, since I had it on since early this morning. Sure enough, it wouldn't start again. He told, don't do anything and leave the phone alone and go to the Sprint store to exchange it. Well, I am now off to the store to get my 3rd EVO 3D. Hopefully 3 is my lucky number. Anyone else having this many problems. I must be the most unluckiest person.
This happened to me today. I was on the phone, battery died. I plugged it into the car charger, never got a charging light. Waited till I got home and put it on my home charger, no light. Pulled battery, back to normal.
I had the same troubles. Wiped phone took updates and it was fine for a few hours then Frozen. Sprint sending me out a new one. Hopefully second times a charm.
This happened to me today, but differently. I had about 35% left on my battery, so I plugged it into my work computer to charge before I left for the day. I had left it alone for a few minutes, and went to go check Facebook. Interestingly, it wouldn't turn on, nor was the charging light on. I pulled it off the cable, still wouldn't turn on. Pulled the battery, put it back in, wouldn't turn on. I plugged it in, and the computer recognized it like it was turned on. It tried to install drivers for QHSUSB_DLOAD. But the screen wouldn't come on, nor would the charging light come on. Ended up having to take it to the Sprint store and they gave me a new one.
Definitely a shocking experience for a phone only 6 days old.
I have no problem from day 1

SAME thing happened to me, needed a replacement
and here was my experiment (Across multiple posts, none of which gathered many ****ing replies. Interesting how this one is)
At first I thought it had to do with my 32gb memory card, then I thought it had to do with fast boot, then I thought it had to with hacking, then I thought it had to do with certain cables, then I thought it had to do with the extension cord, then I thought it had to do with using a USB 3.0 extender cable. Needless to say it was none of those.
Check my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137683
I could reproduce this every single time without fail as long as I had fast boot off and powered down the phone with the charger in it.
After a while of trying to understand the cause, I broke it even more to the point where it wouldn't turn on regardless if I had a memory card in there or not, as long as a cable was plugged into the charging port, it would cease to turn on! At any rate, I went to the Sprint Store yesterday, and none of the floor models had that issue so I swapped it out. After battling it out with a Sprint Tech who thought he knew what he was doing, he eventually caved--as if I couldn't get a replacement anyway since within 30-day return policy. So far, my new EVO 3D isn't doing this, but you best believe if it does, I'm returning it and getting a Nexus S 4G instead.
I'm not sure if I should try a hard reset to see if it'll fix it... or just ask for a replacement.
I had something weird happen. Not exactly the same issue, but odd. My phone has been giving me awesome battery life, I typically have been getting 16 hours of medium or so use. I charged my phone to full and took it off the charger at 1am to put by my bedside so I can use the alarm clock. I wake up late, my alarm didnt go off, so I click the power button on the phone and nothing happens. Phone wont turn on, I tried a battery pull.
I took the phone to a Sprint store and the tech tells me it powered up when he plugged it in, and that my battery had died during the 7 hours it was sitting on my night stand, and I've been getting over 16 hours a day on the battery. I found this odd, he put it on the charger for 15 minutes and my phone was at 50% battery so I dont really believe that it was a completely dead battery. There are some weird issues with the phone, and I rely on it for my alarm. Should this happen again, I'll probably return the phone and just wait for newer hardware revisions, as I love the phone.
Well, I got my third replacement EVO 3D today. I took it to the Sprint Corporate store that I got the first two. I went right to the Manager and had her help me with the phone's problem. She said there was no problem in exchanging the EVO 3D after seeing it not start up. She pulled the battery, just like I told her she should do, and said it most likely would work fine after the pull. Sure enough it worked again. I talked to her about what would be causing the problem with now two returned phones. She said that other Managers were talking to her about the problem, and they believe that it was caused by the update Sprint and HTC pushed to the phone . She told me I should not do the update for the phone until a new update comes out. I am going on Vacation in two days and I need to make sure I have a working phone, so if my phone will work without the update, that is what I will do. Sprint hasn't admitted yet there is a problem, but it sounds like internally they know something is wrong. If anyone else is having this problem, I would go to Sprint store or wherever you got the phone, and get a new phone and not update until a new update is available. I intend to call Sprint and let them know after a week or two, if my phone is working properly, that the update was most likely the problem.
What's the AC charger you use? I cannot meet this issue with HTC EVO 3D official AC charger. Maybe you use another brand's Micro USB charger but not HTC EVO 3D official AC charger.

Won't boot after powering off or restarting

Ok sorry if this has already been discussed but I'm kinda in a hurry. I'm having an issue where if I tell the phone to reboot or even power off, it will just turn off and not come back up without a battery pull. Last time I told it to reboot (fastboot off btw), it turned off, then the red led came on for a few seconds, then it just stayed off. I've noticed that the only way around this is to pull the battery and then try to boot it up, which works fine but is annoying as hell. Is this a common issue or what, trying to get some opinions on whether or not to try to exchange it before I get off work and go outta town.
Try a factory reset. Still no luck, then take it back

Well, I hanging on to this 3VO for right now at least, still hoping to hear from more people. Actually, I hope this isn't a real problem with the 3D's in general and that mine is a somewhat isolated incident. Bad comes to worse, I swap for a new one or the GS2 at the end of the month.
I had that problem for a day on mine, and after that it never happened again.

Mine was having the problem where if I restarted it would just power down. Then it got to where I had to pull the battery to get it to turn back on. Took it back yesterday.

Phone Not Charging Thread

This is now happening on my replacement phone! I got the first phone replaced because it wasn't charging but now it's happening again on the replacement. It seems to only happen when the battery gets to 20% or lower. When it does this, it doesn't matter if it is USB or wall charging. I have been able to get the new phone to charge now twice by rebooting - one time it took three reboots. The first time it happened on my first phone the battery widget stuck on 50% and I didn't get the low battery warning and the battery went to 0 before I knew it and it took forever to begin charging again. I've been on different battery modes when it happens, so that isn't causing it.
I've mentioned this on a couple other threads and there's been others that responded it happened to them, so I thought I'd start a thread on this in case Motorola is monitoring this forum (they better be). Anyone else chime in here so we can get a feel for how widespread this may be.

Have you tried doing a hard reset and letting the phone sit for 20 minutes. It could be some kind of bug. I know mine had some force closes on the first day. I did a hard reset from recovery and let the phone sit at first boot. Then did a reboot and have had no problems since.
Master reset for photon 4g.

I haven't seen this problem on my phone. Best thing to do is report it to the Motorola forums and have them look at it especially if many others are experiencing the same issue.
In the mean time, you possibly could have another bad unit. Not sure why it would not charge when the battery hits 20% or lower. Also what battery widget are you using?

Good idea on the Moto forums. I have tried Battery Monitor widget, Circle Battery widget and Battery Notifier (big text) widget. No one widget was in use or installed for every instance I had a battery charge problem, but I guess it may be more than one widget with potential interferences. Has anyone else been using any of these widgets and not experienced this problem?
@Beartrap
What battery widgets etc have you installed? Sounds like a compatability issue with something that was installed. Try using the phone completely stock with no custom widgets installed. If you can get the phone back to stock out of box condition that would be the best way to troubleshoot this problem. I doubt it's another bad phone.

I agree it's not a bad phone, but some bug either in the phone or installed app/widget. I'd like to know what battery widgets people are using that haven't had this issue so I know what's safe.
Not exactly related to battery widgets but i have noticed that Estrong's, Astro and File Expert file managers do not work correctly on my Photon. They don't show the full capacity of my 16gb sd card and they also don't show all the files in my download folder. So I'm thinking theirs going to be more incompatability issues with this phone until app developers get some updates rolled out for this phone.
As for battery widgets, i don't use them. I use the stock battery ifo that is included with the Photon. Sorry I can't give any help with that. but I'm pretty sure the widgets in the Android Market will not be fully compatible with the Photon. Uninstall everything you installed from the market and use your phone for a day or so and see how it acts.
I'm having the same issue, i'm not using any sorta battery widget/app, just stock(non-rooted).
Its been charging for about 4 hours today and went from 20% to 30% and its hot, really hot.
I've had it since day one and seems to match what the OP is saying about once it goes below 20-30% it has a hard time charging but like i mentioned before, mine gets toasty when its failing at charging.
Also had an issue while streaming from google music beta, went from 100 to 20% in <2 hours and once again it was hot as the devil's **** then it wouldn't charge.

I did fail to mention that each time I did notice the back of the phone was pretty warm but not what I'd consider real hot. The third time this happened (on second phone), I cooled it down to room temperature and it still wouldn't charge.

Well it got hotter the my evo 4g ever did after flashing many roms and kernels and what not and even hotter the my pre minus when simultaneously charging and tethering. Havent had a phone get that hot before, i'll try to get a temp reading when it happens again.
Just pulled the battery little while ago and it started charging again. Seems to be hit or miss with the restarts and battery pulls the get the thing going.
I havent tried just turning it off and letting it charge past 30% yet, to see if it only does it when it on vs. when it off.
It's happened again. I was running speedtest.net repeatedly to test my radios and my battery temp climbed up to 118F. I checked if the phone would charge periodically and it did until the battery got less than 30%. It seems to be this combination that causes the malfunction. I rebooted and it charged fine, but the temp also fell to 115F, so I don't know if it was the reboot or lower temp, but at least now I know how to get it to recharge and not run th and it always charged, battery down to 0.
I tried to make this happen the other night by running quadrant repeatedly, but temps never went above 115. It always charged that night, so 115-118 is the magic number together with <30% battery.
BTW - our radios may kickass, but they also generate a lot of heat, so be on the alert to high battery temps when hitting the radios hard.
My first Photon had the problem where the battery went from 50% to DEAD immediately. I remember one time the phone was red hot to the touch right before it died, it was just idling. It wouldn't accept charge until I removed and replaced the battery.
My replacement Photon doesn't have the problem (yet) or any of the first Photon's problems. I am convinced there is a bad batch of Photons out there.
Unfortunately I'm on my second photon. I exchanged the first for this reason.

I am using the black Sprint case, but there's no magnet in it. I do think the case may aggrevate the heat buildup so if I hit it hard again and feel it getting warm, I'll be sure to remove the case.

This theory just got shot down. I hooked up the USB charging cable at 62% and 84F and it wouldn't charge. The phone recognized the connection and displayed the message it was in charge mode, but the battery in the notification bar didn't show it was charging nor did battery monitor widget. I then connected it to the OEM wall charger and cable and nothing. I rebooted and no change. I shutdown the phone and hooked it up to AC and it went into charge mode. I then booted and it's going into charge mode as it should. I'm back to square one again.

That doesn't matter, you have every right to exchange it 283892 times until you get one that works. within the 30 days, It is in our contract. Not sure why people don't understand this. It doesn't matter where you get it, what store you get it from, Sprint, Best Buy, Radio ****, bob's electronics supply..you can get it exchanged. Personally, I wouldn't have even hesitated nor made this post, I would have just exchanged it.
Then made this post to say what happened to a photon I used to have. lol
EDIT: People need to speak up and let companies understand that you just won't settle. I come across customers everyday that just settle. I work for Comcast, talk to customers daily about things. I get, oh yea and then our internet sucks, and this doesn't work and oh yea this broke and we don't get this channel but we pay for it. My first question is, "Did you call?"....their answer, "Call who?"..or just "No". LOL I'm like, how the hell do you think stuff will get fixed if no one knows you have any problems? haha
You are the consumer, you have a lot of rights to the product you paid money for.
This is a great phone, but like all electronics some stores might get a bad shipment, it happens.
Good Luck with whatever you choose to do.
I have exchanged mine 2 times, 1 had a messed up screen, the other 1 had some problem that I couldn't make calls. So far this one is good to go! The Charm

Uh, Don't let your battery completely drain... Face - to - Palm.

If this device has gets completely drained, it is painful to recover. You will have to try possibly 100 times various chargers, removing the battery etc.
The screen stayed black with an occasional light, but wouldn't power on at all.
It finally worked but you really have to be tenacious.
2 batteries 1 smirk.
edit--
i'd still be messed in this case, unless one also had the standalone charger...
now i'm terrified of letting the battery drain!
Knock on wood...but I've never had this problem.

Yeah I never had this problem and my phone has died several times. I just let the blinking light go solid and turn it back on. I did notice that my old LG chargers are a bit finicky with this phone though.
i though this happened to mine too. my phone died, i plugged my charger in but nothing happened. eventually the orange light came on, it just takes a while.

Just let it sit on the charger for a few minutes.
The light will blink for a while, but it will still charge. If after 10 minutes the LED is still blinking, unplug the charger and plug it back in.
Run mine dead at least once a week. Which should be common practice. Never a problem. You should definitely let it charge a while before expecting it to fire back up.

Don't be "that guy".
I exchanged my one-week-old phone yesterday because of this: my phone went dead overnight, so I plugged it in in the morning and got nothing (no lights or anything). I left it charging for about 20 minutes while I got ready for work and still got nothing. When I got to work, I stuck it on the charger again for about 3 hours, and still got nothing. I went to the nearest Verizon store to see what they could do about it, and they didn't even look at the phone, just replaced it.
Works for me, I guess.
Have had this happen twice now (with oem batteries). My problem was though, left them on the charger all day, then they wouldnt turn on or do anything.
sometimes i wonder if the people who said their phones never came back on, actually just freaked because it didn't turn RIGHT back on and frantically started plugging it into tons of chargers thinking all sorts of things could be wrong, when really nothing was.
I have never had a phone NOT come back on, and this is with 2 years of HTC phones (at least 2 dozen phones when you consider all the replacements for various things here and there) and not a single one has failed to charge back up.
not saying anyone is lying, but when something happens that were unfamiliar with, its easy to start getting freaked out.
Think about it, would a manufacturer make a device that has a high tendency to fully discharge, "break" should it actually discharge? Sounds a bit silly...
Ran mine sead before and recharged no problem. You just have to plug it in and wait. It's not gonna turn on immediately. Let it charge.

Someone has to be that Guy...we don't need 30 threads on the same topic cause people are to lazy to see if someone figuired something out before them.

In almost every thread on here, someone has to complain and tell the OP to search. There are thousands of threads to go through. Even after narrowing it down with a search they could still miss the answer to their question.
No, this is a problem I've had as well, twice in fact.
The first time my battery ran down from 99% to dead because I was unaware that it lost and was searching for a signal. I couldn't get it to turn on after hours and hours of charging. I finally took it into a Verizon store, and they used a different charger to get it turned back on.
It happened again last night. I was downloading something, the signal was lost, and the battery died prematurely. I used the stock charger to charge it overnight, but when I woke up this morning, the phone refused to turn on. I charged it with my HP Touchpad charger, and it came on about five minutes later.
The stock charger failed to revive the battery BOTH times.
So my solutions are, 1. don't let the battery die. But things happen and sometimes it's unavoidable. 2. If the battery dies and you can't get it charged after hours, try using a compatible charging cord from a different device to get it moving.
Things that are unavoidable happen, but I make darn sure my battery never dies 100% after something that happened with my Droid Charge.
It was custom ROMed and all tweaked out etc and I fell asleep one night when it only had about 10% left. It ran all night and was off in the morning.
When I plugged It in and started it up, every single app started force closing on me. This had never happened before and it was so bad the thing was totally unusable.
Luckily, I had made a nandroid BU the day before and restoring it fixed it.
No idea how true this is, but I've read a few other posts with people having this issue and they found that if you pop the back, pop the battery, plug in, insert battery and replace back. Then you let it sit for 20 or so minutes and it should start up again. Love to know if this resolves the issue for those having it though.

Phone died! No charging light!

I know I've read it once before somewhere on the Internet. Well it happened to me.
My first EVO was returned because the light leak finally got to me. I too was part of the group who had the big sticker on the box. Other than that the phone was perfect.
The second EVO was pretty much perfect. I had 1 system reboot a day or so into owning it. Figured it was nothing. Less than a week in, I went to charge the phone and the phone restarted. Didn't know what to think. Unplugged it and played with it a little. Plugged it in again and it restarted again. Now I was perplexed. Once it restarted, I unplugged it and plugged it in to see what would happen. It just shut down. No shutdown animation. Just went black. No charging light or anything came on. Won't power up and won't accept a charge from any charger. Now I have a new replacement but I figured I'd share my experience.

Had to this happen to me. Left the phone alone for 20 mins, even turned on a fan to cool the phone. Starting charging.

Wasn't so lucky. Left it over night and still nothing.

Had the same thing happen to me...all you have to do is hold down the power button for 10 seconds and wait for the buttons on the bottom to flash and then the phone should restart.
What's the "sticker on the box" issue?
Happened to me too...started up google latitude on the phone then all the sudden it went black and no calls went through, even though it rang. I was able to turn it on 30 min later, but after I held the power button down for like half a minute.

Negative. Tried that too. Was tempted to throw it in the freezer too. Someone who had a similar issue said the phone came alive after that.
The phone was completely non responsive.

I think some members mentioned that there were different batches. May be a coincidence but some of the phones that were reporting problems came with the larger sticker seal on the phones cardboard box.

i picked up my phone from best buy on 5/24 like 2 or 3 days into owning it i had my phone reboot randomly 1x. after the reboot it looked fine. 10 min after that it was non responsive and getting hot on the back. nothing i could do would reset it. not even holding the power button down. the row of buttons would flash but no reboot. i then put it on the charger no charge light came on and nothing whatsoever happened. i figured i had a phone that was DOA. after 20 or 30 minutes i pulled the phone off the charger it booted up and i have not had a problem to this day. My phone is not rooted and i am not doing anything crazy with it at this point. i Do have what appears to be a larger sticker on my box. Another problem i had before this was people said my voice faded in and out during calls. i tried everything. finally blowing long and hard into the microphone hole seems to have resolved the issue. just putting my experiences out there. hopefully this was an isolated incident and i will have no further issues. but i will not hold my breath.
