I just recently got the vibrant and got the OTA the same day, the gallery freezes about half the time, and about half of the time that it freezes i have to pull the battery, i cant get to task manager or put the phone to sleep and wake it up.
I searched google and there are alot of links regarding it but i didnt find any that gave any ideas to fix it.
I searched this forum and nothing came up. Anyway, I have a class 6 card, the gallery on my nexus is very quick and has never frozen, so it is definitely the phone.
In my experience with the g1, MT3g, N1 and now this vibrant, any time ive received an OTA it has come with costs, it always brings fixes and features but also causes new problems, large and small. So I dont doubt what I found while searching, that the gallery issue is a result of the recent OTA for the GPS fix. Anyway, its kind of silly that this awesome, technologically advanced device freezes when you open up one of the native apps. But can we do anything about it? And if not, is it likely that Samsung will address it in another OTA? thanks
edit: ive also just recently had my phone just turn off every day or so, and it wont power back on until i pull the battery. Maybe these 2 issues mean i have a defective device? Or is this par for the course with the tmobile galaxy s?
Overclock your phone to only run at 800-1000MHz. It completely solved this for me, 400-1000MHz still hiccups.
thank you, yet another reason to root i suppose...
So no way to fix that with stock phone? =(

That is odd, I've never had my gallery freeze or my phone reboot... Are you sure you don't have some rogue app? Perhaps you should factory reset and start fresh? Do you have any "junk" apps on your phone (stupid apps)?
I had a freeze on opening gallery right after the JI6 was released. I think it was trying to recreate the thumbnails from scratch and download pics from my Picasa acct.
Happened one time only and I actually had to pull the battery since it went unresponsive. Never had a problem after that.
~SB
perhaps unmount and remount the INTERNAL memory card. I've done this before just because I saw it as a suggestion and it recreated my gallery.
I having the same issue. I am ready to delete it and use a different app. Is that possible?

If you're rooted you can probably remove it.
I have tried factory reset so I don't think its a rogue app. I got the ota the day I got the phone so I can't compare before and after. If some people aren't having the issue period maybe a warranty replacement would resolve it. Of course, if we do end up getting froyo maybe that's something that will improve. Love the phone either way, I just get fed up with stuff like gallery freeze, random reboot, GPS issues, etc... stuff that i would think shouldn't get past product testing.
OP, this is discussed at the thread below. (use the search next time)
You are not the only one having this issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805784
Quick Summary:
- Even with the removable card blank, the Gallery still have the same issues.
- I did a complete wipe and still have the same issues.
- I cleared data through System Settings which recreated thumbnails and other data, still have the same issues.

Wow i am so sick of reading some loser tell somebody to "search next time". You'll be so very relieved to know that I actually did search, and all i found out is that you dont have any friends. But honestly I did find your thread, however it didnt seem to me to be on point with what i wanted to ask specifically. Your post says that "watchdog" told you your gallery is a "resource hog" and that you have to kill it. I dont know what watchdog is, nothing told me anything i just cant get into my gallery app very often, so that didnt seem applicable. Also, i got ji6 the day i got my phone so putting the gallery issue in the context you did ("since ji6 update") didnt mean anything to me, i dont anything about this phone pre-ji6 update. All I know is that my gallery app sucks, your thread was a bit technical for me to be able to apply to my particular issue
Anyway, now my gallery freezes every single time i initially try to open it, i have had to pull the battery 6 times in a row, it works after the pull. This has been my favorite android phone (of 4) but now i just want to set it on fire and run over it with my car. I guess Samsung and Android arent interested in making their $600 products work, does anybody know how i can fix my phone so that it does what it is supposed to? Also im not rooted which i assume probably makes it impossible for me to fix? thanks for any help.

I have gone through countless battery reconditions, following various methods, very tediously, various roms (nero, bionix, trigger, etc.) trying to get acceptable battery life. After a lot of detective work I finally pinned down the problem to the 'mediaserver' process within the system processes. It runs CONSTANTLY and drains the batter within half a day from a full charge. This problem has been documented on google code: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6765
The process cannot be killed via any task manager as it seems to be a sub-process. So I finally mustered the courage to move the file from its directory into the parent directory to see if that would do the trick and restarted.
Now I'm stuck on the boot screen.
Can someone please help find a solution for this issue? I think I can recover from the boot screen issue but I know I will just encounter the same issue again and again.
I am currently on trigger 2.6.1.
Help?
I should also ask if it is possible to even ODIN back to stock from a ROM that has the voodoo fix enabled?
Just odin back, root, flash a rom, freeze the app with titanium backup.
Edit, n/m, just realized you weren't talking about an app. I'll read the link you posted.
I'm on trigger 2.6.1, no issues here. You sure it's not a bad app man?
As far as I can tell, no. It certainly could be but the I've been having battery issues since bionix 3 I think.
However I did read on that google link that certain media centric apps can cause it to go nuts. I am using the winamp beta app and youtube pretty heavily (although thats obviously unlikely to be the culprit).
I thought about freezing it but ya, its a sub process under the 'system processes'...process so I can't freeze it without taking down the whole thing and probably causing way more issues.
Thanks for the response though, appreciated.
Dude, winamp and youtube are going to use a lot of power.. How long is a full charge for you?
About 8 hours. I pull it off the charger at 7:30am, use winamp for music for about 1 - 1.5 hours and other moderate use. Dead by the time I leave work at 5. Get home, charge it up until I hit the gym (usually get it to roughly 50%) and listen to music, watch a couple videos and its begging for the charger by the time I get home.
Furthermore, I use the system panel app to find out exactly what is eating CPU cycles. That 'mediaprocess' thing is exponentially above everything else. So either a bad app is causing it to run and keep it running or something else is triggering it. I formatted both SD Cards per some of the suggestions elsewhere, but no dice.
seems like your getting normal battery life.
heavy usage on your phone will eat up the battery. especially watching videos.
So what do I make of the mediaserver process that is using up 40-50% of the battery? Watching videos, listening to music or not, I get the same results. I really don't think its that.
Are you sure you're completely killing the apps when you're not using them? Use the task manager and be sure the app is not running. Otherwise, be sure to freeze media hub and the DRM storage with TB. It should help with drain while the phone is on standby.

Ya I'm sure. I don't even have mediahub installed on the phone however I am going to try freezing / removing the DRM storage thing.
Mediaserver constantly running is the reasons the battery drains. I didn't know if anyone has any solution as to how to kill it, or how to keep it from running continuously. This is a known bug as shown in the link in OP.
I'm guessing everytime I open up winamp or something it starts, then never stops after that. Who knows.

No sir. I've deleted pretty much anything DRM, Mediahub or Allshare related. Most of it is already removed with Trigger (ROM I'm using right now) and I removed a couple more services / apps in the quest for better battery life.
Hi there,
Up until a few weeks ago, I was an iPhone user, but never really enjoyed it that much. I got myself a SGS2 with Telstra, so far network and phone have been alright. Downloads at around 8.6MB consistently.
My phone specs are as follows:
Model: GT-I8100T
Version: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100TDVKF2
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100TDVKF4-CL301812 [email protected] #2
Build number: Gingerbread.DVKF4
1)
I am new to all this and would like to understand more about what all the above actually means. Does anyone have a tutorial or link explaining it all?
2)
I have heard about "rooting" your phone. Can someone either tell me or direct me to somewhere that can outline what rooting is, why someone would do it and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
3)
There are things about this phone I cannot stand:
The browser always crashes (so I have replaced with with Dolphin HD).
You cant turn of Camera snapshot sound.
When ever i unplug earphones and plug them back in the media volume automatically decreases.
The stock media player does a terrible job at being good, moved to winamp (are there any better ones, perhaps a rip of the iphone music player?).
Battery Life is terrible (if I use GPS guidance, phone would be lucky to last a day).
I find that the phone takes a long time to "load media from sd card" is that normal? (I have a class 4 mini sd 32gb).
Last of all, Facebook for android runs terribly on this phone. Can't upload photos, or even view my own. I can't work out why. Tried reinstalling.
I thank you in advance for any help or links you can provide me with.
Cheers.

I can't say I ever noticed the stock Samsung browser crashing on my device.
If you are rooted, you can permanently disable the camera noise by renaming the shutter sound ogg file in /system/media/audio/ui. Rename it to .ogg.bak and it should stop the noise.
I liked the stock media player but there are other popular music players like PowerAmp. Or even the music player from the MIUI ROM.
Welcome to smart phones. Battery life sucks. Get the official extended battery, root the phone, remove some bloat, install a custom kernel like SpeedMod. Also check Kies to see if your carrier has released an update for your phone. Android 2.3.3 is old and not very battery friendly.
I have a class 10 SD card and it doesn't take long to load at all.
Facebook for Android has always sucked but I have never had any problem with photos.

Thanks for the replies, been reading up a lot the last couple of hours.
Just a few questions for you:
1)
What exactly constitutes "bloat"? My phone comes with a few Telstra (my provider) apps like news bulletins, navigon (with free maps in AUS), but are there processors behind the scenes that I can't see that really slow it down that much?
2)
When you say "install a custom Kernal" I am not sure I understand entirely. I read the thread posted above, but is installing a different kernel the same as installing a new ROM? Do some ROMS include different Kernels? Do I need a new/different rom (from the stock) in order to install new kernels? Please explain in basic terms. I am guessing I need to root the phone in order to install kernels. By installing kernels, am I losing anything on my phone?
Thanks.

Consider rooting as jailbreak. Normally you don't have root access privileges on OS. But some programs or you yourself need to have root access to change something on OS.

Unlike iOS, android supports various hardwares, phones, tablets etc. iOS supports only the hardware used by apple. Therefore all unnecessary code has been pulled off from kernel and OS. That's why it feels faster and battery friendly.
In android there are some tricks to save your battery. Be patient and keep reading the forum, you'll learn in time

It depends on how many files you have on that storage, and yes it's annoying. However you can disable it with like this https://market.android.com/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot

So I have a Droid X2, now un-rooted and back on stock 2.3.4 and this is an issue I have had since I had the phone and have never found a fix. I have asked this multiple times on the Verizon forum for the DX and never get an answer...
SO every day I seem to have issues with my notifications going mute, sometimes, but not always, my ringer even goes mute. Usually once a day I have to reboot my phone because it is the only way I can fix it. I thought at first it had to do with my blutooth, but since SBFing and going back to stock I have not re-added my blutooth and it still happens. I took it into the store and he suggested that it is an app causing a conflict and I should uninstall 10 or so apps at a time to try and narrow it down... but I just went ahead and did a factory restore to see if it would help... but it happened again today...
Now, the notifications I use are ones I put on the phone. I have tried putting them on the SD and the internal and it seems to happen with both. I have also put them directly on and also tried ringdroid but it still does the same thing. The sound and notification levels will be all the way up, and when you go into the settings and try to pick a notification sound or ringtone, even the stock ones, you wont hear anything (and you would usually hear a preview of the sound)... The only way I can get the sounds to work is to reboot the phone and when it comes back, it will be fine... for a while. Sometimes have to reboot multiple times a day, but almost always at least once a day to get them back up...
Since you all seem smarter than the Verizon folks and have been a huge help to me thus far, I thought I would ask here and see if anyone else has ran into this and has a fix or if there are any known apps that would cause this. I have done searches but found nothing...

Awesome... thank you!
I've had a similar issue but not exactly the same. I normally keep my phone on silent mode but sometimes during the day it will automatically go off silent mode. Seems to happen most often when the battery level is below half. I just learned to live with it. My alarm would deactivate by itself in Froyo, so at least this isn't going to cause me to be late for work like that.
Problem is solved here after last week's upgrade. I'd suggest flashing a new build if possible. I guess for some unknow reason, parts of the OS gets corrupted or maybe its a bug in device drivers for our android phones thats been addressed in later builds.

I'm certainly no dev, just an avid user who likes learning and tweaking to get the most from his phone. I recall having similar problems with FROYO stock or rooted which as I remember went away when GINGERBREAD came out. I've been running DZK's CM7 beta as my daily driver since it was released with virtually no problems and unlike most other ROM's does not need multiple tweaks and scripts to scream with the exception of a wifi and/or dialer glitch that looks like Moonshadow has recently fixed. Sooooo unless HDMI is a deal breaker I'd suggest you flash CM7 and see if that takes care of your problems just remember to abide by the cautions regarding use of TBU to restore apps. And lastly as a rule of thumb I reboot my phone every morning once I get to 100% charge...force of habit I guess.
Good luck

Did not uninstall any apps, and have not had any updates (as far as I know... well besides app updates) and for some reason it hasnt been happening lately. Again, no idea what changed. Still unrooted on stock 2.3.4 gingerbread and phone seems fine now. Been happening for months and when I finally come here to get help, the problem seemed to have went away. I will keep you all updated if this changes. Hopefully if it is happening to anyone else, it has also been fixed... Thanks again for all your help. Really appreciate you guys helping out this noob

Hey, I have tried searching the forums but did not exactly come across the answer I was looking for. So, I am on my Samsung Galaxy SII and I just rooted my phone recently. I was having the problem of wifi sharing sucking up my battery, so I rooted my phone but at the same time I decided to try freezing up a few apps that I did not need to free up more ram and get more battery life. So, I followed the "safe to remove app" thread and I removed apps that were said to be safe from the spreadsheet, but could someone please tell me what is needed to run Youtube and the IM applications? For Youtube, everything works fine, until I get to the video part. I click on the video, and it never loads, the circle keeps spinning. I would think I disabled something important for loading the videos there as I can still load Youtube videos when I go to the website. Also, with IM I almost have the same problem. When I click on the application, the entire screen is black, with just the loading circle in the middle, but nothing ever happens. These two things seem to be the only problems I encountered so far. I only froze apps that were said to be for sure safe to remove. Nothing under caution or no. I hope someone could help me with this problem! Thank you guys so much for all your help! I do not know much about my phone as I just rooted it.
Not sure about IM app, i suggest try imo messenger.
For Youtube, did you remove video app?
(Videos; com.sec.android.app.videoplayer; VideoPlayer.apk)
Although im not 100% sure, I would bet that it's the cause of the video playback problem.
I think better to re-run all the frozen apps so that you will know that those frozen apps caused the issue. If not, then you have a corrupted system.
Alright, thanks for your help guys! I guess in the back of my head, I already knew I had to go back and test out each and every quarantined app again. I was just hoping someone knew exactly what was needed for those applications. Thanks though!
