Hi there
I'm new here, and I own a HTC Hero (GSM) which I really like it! I was waiting for the official 2.1 update from HTC but I soon found out that HTC keep postponing the release date and I really can't wait anymore.
I really want to root my phone and install a custom rom,I've keep searching for guides and "how to" toipics from XDA and google but I really don't understand a lot of what they were saying.
Alright here is my question
1. What is Vanilla,Espresso and this Kitchen thingy?
2. What does this full wipe means? does it really wipe all my data on my phone?
3. What is a busybox,VPN,APN, and AOSP?
4. What is this Launcher 2 and HelixLauncher thing?
5. Does the Custom Rom (Android 2.1 custom rom) have bluetooth file sharing features?
6. How do I install this "Apps 2 SD"?
7. Which is better way to root the phone? The unlokr.com (one click rooting) way or the XDA ones?
8. What is JIT? I've seen a lot of rom have this JIT enabled thingy...
9. Which is the best custom rom on XDA? (doesn't matter if it wasn't a Sense UI one,I just want a stable, fast, less buggy custom rom)
Sorry for asking a lot of qustions, but I really want to make sure what am I doing before rooting and installing custom rom on my HTC Hero.
many thanks in advance!

1.Vanilla=Type of ROM where is no HTC stuff like Sense included.
Espresso= Version of Android
Kitchen= Select which apps u want to use on certain custom ROM´s.
2: This mean u shoud wipe data/factory reset, wipe Dalvik(APP)Cache, Wipe SD:ExT Partition (If its there)
3.Busybox= Root Features for your Hero, VPN= ?, APN=Mobile Network Connection Points?, AOSP= Android Open Source Project
4.Launcher2= HomeApp with 5 Homescreens, HelixLauncher= Another Home App
5.Yes they have but u should not use them.
6. Different on every ROM. APPS2SD means that u can install apps on your SDcard.
7.One Click Rooting should not work anymore so u should use the XDA´s one.
8.JIT is a combile method that translate directly to maschine code i think please use google.
9.Best is Kimera 1.6 or Modaco 3.2 - u should not use 2.1 ROMS they are quiete to buggy!
I sell my Hero next Week when my Desire is Arrived =) But have fun with the Hero ;-)
PS: Sry for my bad English.
1. Vanilla means stock android, without any visual or functional enhancements. Espresso is a User Interface, just like Sense. The kitchen is used for adding or removing ROM components(and other stuff too).
2. Full wipe means erasing all data and cache. Yes, you lose all your installed apps, contacts, texts and such. Basically it's a factory reset.
3. Busybox extends the android shell functionality. VPN = virtual private network, APN = access point name, AOSP = android open source project -- you could google for all
As you can see, all the information i've provided you can be found by searching google. So, to help you enhance your 'googling' skills, I will let you answer the remaining questions by yourself.
Moreover, this is the development section. Next time post these kinds of questions in the Q&A section.

Should I wait?
Alright, sorry for double posting but I really want to ask this qustions, well actually I should ask this question myself but I want some opinion from u guys
Should I wait for the official release from HTC for the Android 2.1 with Sense for the HTC Hero?
just stay on original/stock rom . 2.73.xxx.xx
This is better. and wait for 2.1 update
it's my opinion.

You're asking mostly people who haven't waited... do you really think you'll get an objective answer?
How pissed off are you with 1.5? Have you seen/used 2.1? Did you like it? etc etc etc

Then if you install 2.1 stock, it'll lock the phone down removing the possibility of ever rooting it, no?
Personally I'd root it and go with modaco latest if you want it roughly as stock but with some bugfixes then you've got the option of using custom roms in the future or whatever you want. you only need to root it once then you can do whatever you like.

Use the official 1.5 rom for a week to two weeks, then root and install a few different custom roms for a week to two weeks and then see what you prefer, you can either stay rooted on a custom rom or you can revert back to the original 1.5 official
there is a reason why Google was invented. e.g. you would be able to find stuff on ROMs like http://android.modaco.com/content/h.../304106/revote-for-best-2-1-rom-w-benchmarks/

Is that an app or built in?
if built in, maybe - check with the rom creator first
if app - yes...
then,
does Kimera custom rom (android 1.5) have chinese input support?
and how about the Modaco custom rom (also android 1.5),does it also have chinese input support too?
and if u say that there is an app to enable chinese input, what is the name of the app?

OIC - i've no idea. Sometimes the custom rom's have support for other languages and keyboards, some have better support than others. Check the market before or check with your preferred rom developer before flashing!
Hello,
I'm new to XDA and to the android world and just bought a Samsung Galaxy Ace,
I did a little searching and discovered rooting and custom roms and installed one or two to check them out.
But one thing that i really didn't like was that i wasn't able to put the default samsung theme,
I'm unaware if any rom has the default theme installed, and if anyone knows that would be great and if not how can i get it ? (I mean with defult icons and everything).
Thanks in advance
Use Blackhawk Rom or Gingerreal 2.0
If you are using CM7 you can use this theme. If you want the same launcher like Touchwiz you have just to use this. It will look like the original Touchwiz, instead of the statusbar. There will be other control panel, but the battery icon etc. is like Touchwiz.
Thanks for your answers but is Gingerreal very stable ?
I'm seeing negative comments on the topic and i can't really find the Blackhawk rom.

After the Factory reset no personal data will be saved.. may be IMEI.. i have to check.
But i don't need anymore a backup.
My phone was stuck in bootloop after installing Xposed Tweakbox i tried to full wipe end to reinstall a stock rom, but zip file was rejected by cwm.. i resolved reflashing everything including the recovery.
After that i tried Yabe rom, fast and light, but there are some minor bugs..
Right now i'm in the latest optimised stock rom.
No bugs, run very smoothly, but i still want to try lewa (miui based) rom.. i'm looking for possibility to customize long press of back softkeys (to force app to close) and long press of volume keys (to change song).
stock optimized

Yes, I´m running it for the last 5 days... quite fast, absolut stable, and the battery drain´s gone... It just lasts for about 4 day with "normal" usage... before, I´d to reload it after about 1 1/2 to 2 days....

yes it is better ! faster and save more battery.:good:
Yes using the same ROM, smooth and good battery life.No problem at all with it. Probably will stay with it until JB ROM (official) becomes available.
By the way, switched to Lewa recovery, from Lewa package I like TWRP more than CWM (got used with it on Nexus 7).
PS. There are a few threads related to J3 would be nice if somebody could create (if possible) a centralized place for this. Not sure the forum allows this for "chinese" phones, however.
Hi, I have just received my G3. I can't make cellular data work, even it is set "on" and with correct APN.
Other thing is that gtalk is not installed --> is there any way to install it? .
I'll try flashing the latest official ROM (20121129).
EDIT:
cellular data is now working, there was a mistake in the pre-configured APN.
Now the problem is when using cellular data on SIM1 (wcdma), SIM2 hardly can receive calls unless I check "GPRS transfer prefer mode (Call prefer)".
Hi.
I'm about to root my Galaxy S I9100 with one of these roms, but I'm not sure about what gapps I have to get for it? I mean is it gapps for android 4.2.2 or 4.3?
http: // www . get . cm/?device=i9100&type=RC (remove spaces, as I'm not allowed to submit url's)
I prefer release candidate builds, as I want my phone to be stable.
One extra question. When installing the custom rom, will I be able to select my own language? (Danish)
Thank you for taking time to answer my questions.
If you're installing 10.1.RC3, then that's android 4.2.2. From that you should be able to tell yourself which gapps you need
On the install screen after the rom has been flashed, yes there is a list of languages available. I can't guarantee 100% about Danish as I don't speak it... The list of languages is long so I imagine it's an option
Sent from a galaxy far, far away

Hello Hopper.
Thank you for a fast reply. I hope the language is available, or I will have to disable spell checking in sms / email.
BTW: Are gapps mandatory, or can I just go to market and select what I need?
Have a nice day.

No problem mate I would be very surprised if it's not available. They're technically not mandatory, however you won't have a play store if you don't flash gapps. The other thing is that flashing ROM only won't give you an installer setup wizard. Flashing gapps will give you the wizard and allow you to pick a language. Much better off to flash them :good:
As a side note, thank you for the courteous way you have been posting. Very nice to read, and a pleasure to help. Keep it up That's the reason I have hit the thanks button for you. Don't do it for me now (i.e. I'm not asking for your thanks), but you may like to use that button when someone helps you

OK, better install gapps then, seems too much trouble if not doing so.
I guess the language is there, it is in the stock rom, so I guess they didn't use time removing it.

Judging by how Japanese/Chinese/Korean ROMs look and behave like, I have a feeling that they are perfectionist. They change the UI completely with their own recents, status bars etc. Props to those guys, I just wish these kind of ROMs had native english support and not some broken English translation. [AOSP-based stuff like Settings, StatusBar still has native English but not the whole ROM has that support]
