AlphaRev Development - HTC EVO 3D

<Warning> People on Evo 3D getting the new OTA: do not update yet, unless you've already ran Revolutionary to S-OFF.

Yezzir, just saw that

(I am Un-Rooted, But I want to root today!) Am I reading this correctly? do NOT update with the OTA (8/18/2011) update, UNLESS I am already rooted?
So if I root today is it safe to update with that OTA update that came out today *8/18/2011?

I think the update does patch the current root method.
Plus for piece of mind don't ever accept OTA updates from sprint or HTC if you like your root and s-off.
I don't know why some people insist on running a update knowing in the back of their mind they'll possibly/probably loose root, and who knows for how long. Just wait a day or two for the devs to implement it in their ROMs.

You can still take the update because HTC just released the bootloader unlocked method for the HTC EVO 3d.

HTC unlocker = clusterfuck
Revolution = the correct way.

yea not understanding htc way ... unlocked bootloader but you still have s-on ?

Nobody even knows how HTC's unlock even works. There are Sensation users with S-Off and they used HTC's method. Unfortunately, there's about 10 posts like those above to 1 post of actual information about it.

Its looks like its a partial unlock.

I'm sticking with revolutionary, I have root, everything is working awesome, n I didn't lose my warranty

So your saying since I have s-off with revolutionary, I can take the update and still have s-off? Also will this update break root?

If you take the ota through system updates and if you have a custom ROM and recovery it will not allow you to update. It will give you an error message. If you decide to lose the custom recovery and go forward with the ota it will lock your phone with S-on and you will have no way going back to 2.3.3. You will be stuck with lastest ota 2.3.4 with S-on and no root. Then if you decide after that you can't get back to 2.3.3 and think since you can't go back might as well go forward with HTC's bootloader unlock method. It will unlock the bootloader but you still will have S-on and noway of flashing a custom recovery which means no root. If your dying for this update check out the dev section and I believe you can update the prl, kernel, firmware mins the hboot. Check it out. If it was me I would wait for revolutionary or a team that knows what they are doing to release an rooted ota.

[Q] Does Revolutionary unlock work after 2.08.651.2 Update?

Has anyone tried to root their phone after installing this update? Is there an equivalent update for rooted phones?
I read in another thread that someone tried and revolutionary does NOT work (yet) with Hboot 1.50.

No it won't work yet.
Yes there are equivalent updates for rooted phones. Check the first couple pages in the dev section and you should find them.

They also said themselves not to take the update. At least that is what I remember seeing.
Still don't understand why ppl are using htcs unlock. Alpharevs way is easy, n doesn't void warranty. From what I've read its tough to install a recovery and basically screws you.

Well from the legal standing alpharevs does void warranty just harder to tell. Another reason to figure this out is soon all new evo 3ds sold will already have the hboot 1.50. Most be something otherwise it would be lame as hell to have htc unlock a bootloader that does nothing.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Htc's method needs to stop being compared to rev's method... Htc only unlocked it. Meaning that the devs will still need to come up with the method for the rest. (s-off and the rest) think of it like the old evo unlocked but still needed dev work for soff and recovery...

Will Revolutionary be working on a way to root hboot 1.5.000?

Will Revolutionary be working on a way to root hboot 1.5.000?
I updated my phone like an idiot, lost root, and now I want root again.
I'm not stupid enough to do the HTC unlock though.
Yeah just hold off for now.

Is your hboot still S-off? If so, youre probably able to reflash recovery and regain root
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
You just need to follow the "UNROOT" instructions which will roll your Hboot back and then run Revolution again.... (*Or at least thats what I understand from all the reading I have done.) The method they used to get us permanent NAND unlock seems to truly be permanent so you just have to use the HTC Bootloader unlock, then use that to roll the HBOOT back in order to use Revolutionary.
*I have not done this and never will have to but this is my understanding. As always YMMV and if you BRICK IT,well, you already BOUGHT IT.

Hit up that guy who posted that reply. I am pretty sure he did it and redid it a couple times. (*I think)
FORGET IT! That guy actually still had his S-off from Revolutionary and DID NOT take the OTA which is how your NAND was relocked. For now, either sit tight and wait, again, for Rev and Unrevoked to hopefully cook something up or use the HTC method and enjoy half root.
Sorry bud....
I hope so... I was chatting yesterday with them at their IRC channel and they were saying it may not happen....

You currently can't root 1.5 without using HTC's method. Revolutionary is supposedly working on it but its been along time and there doesn't seem to be that much of a rush since HTC released their method.

It is possible to flash CM7 with the HTC Unlock . You have to do it through fastboot . But I agree with everyone here Im not really liking the idea of using the HTC unlock . I to have found myself on HTC's website but just cant bring myself to trust them . I have been waiting patiently for Alpha/Unrevoked to work some magic . That or hope like hell something goes wrong with mine and I get another warranty claim and get 1.40 bootloader on the replacement LOL
How long have you guys been waiting?
Also I don't see no threads out there about alpha/rev working on hboot 1.50 so that ish is driving me crazy....

don't take the update. if you are running a custom rom you have no reason to remove ciq because it is probably already gone.
also, the update patches all known exploits to root the device... so if you are stock, and you are are not rooted, you might screw yourself.

Actually, the previous update with the 1.50 hboot patched all known exploits. This OTA doesn't update the hboot, so if you did the HTC unlock method because of your 1.50 hboot, you should be fine installing this. Granted, it might make some OTHER change to patch a future possibility, but that can't be guaranteed.
Shame on htc....

If you are already on 2.09 hboot, I think you have to use the hboot downgrade method to brick your phone and install an earlier hboot which will let you run dirty racun. It is by no means easy, and I don't know if there is still support for that method.

The only way to downgrade your HBOOT on this device IS to brick your phone (if you're S-ON, that is). I think you misunderstood. This device is much more locked down than the OG. "Forget everything you think you know."
But at this point, the downgrade method isn't supported (yet). I already bricked my Jewel trying it (granted, that was after the downgrade was completed successfully, but still).
The team that put together the downgrading tool is still working vigorously on confirming a method that will work reliably with the new HBOOT. Stay tuned.

^^^ This. The OG EVO and this phone are not the same. What worked on one won't necessarily work on the other. Just wait for an S-off exploit for the new Hboot, otherwise you'll end up with an expensive paperweight, like the Captain did:banghead:
