My phone told me that it had an update today but i didn't bother updating.
So I've been reading forum after forum and can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong and decided to do a post.
I have a X10a and recently rooted it with the following guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711907
Everything seemed to work fine and now I have the superuser.apk as well as the ADW launcher on my phone.
I've been trying to install xrecovery so that I can load some custom roms onto my phone and have tried both the manual method and using the .apk installer here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
I have had no luck doing so.
I can sideload apps fine (so I guess I have superuser permission?) but my phone won't allow me to install xrecovery. Busybox also says my phone is not rooted. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've spend a couple hours every day this week working on this and searching forums and can't seem to come up with a solution. Thanks!
Hey, I had a few problems with getting xrecovery to install as well. Are you 100% sure you rooted ur x10 correctly, given that busybox says its not rooted? I used z4root to root my x10. If you used a different app to root ur X10, try this one instead. It tells you on the front screen whether ur phone is rooted or not. If it isn't rooted, try rooting it with this app. I can't post links unfortunately but you can find it easily with a google search. If not, I'd be more than happy to help you with this outside of the forum on the likes of a messenger program. Just drop me a PM if you're okay to do this.
Please explain what is going on better than I can't install. I can probably help, if I know your situation.

you must be rooted, have busybox and superuser permissons.
Everytime I try to install it using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
which I'm assuming is the latest, I get the error message that I can't install this app on my phone (the same standard error message that you would get by trying to sideload an app before you rooted your phone). Busybox also won't install and says my phone isn't rooted. I've downloaded a few other apps that require root for functionality and I get the same error with all of them.
I do have the superuser .apk on my phone so I'm not sure what the issue is. I've re-flashed the phone three times now to try and root it and every time it seems to work, but the end product is a phone that still won't let me install third party apps.
I have the x10a in the states and don't have access to the official 2.1 update yet so I can't use any of the one click rooting methods out there. I did find this though and might try it tonight (not sure if it will work though, or if I can even utilize it). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
If I need to explain more, I will do my best. Thanks for your help!
same
Hi all,
Same issue here except that busybox is installed.
I've tried to install manually but pressing back while booting doesn't do anything but regular boot.
Help would be appreciated
install busybox from the market
Also, I can't use Z4 or anything similar as I don't have the official 2.1 update. Sony hasn't rolled it out in the states yet and considering that the end of life for the phone with AT&T is fast approaching (March or something now) I'm doubtful that they will.
So I found some other apps that allow you to check for Root Access. According to all the evidence I've collected (inability to sideload, busybox won't install, multiple root checker apps say my phone is NOT rooted) my phone wasn't rooted correctly.
I've gone through the guide to root x10a's with 1.6 3 times though and have the superuser .apk on my phone. Hope this additional information helps
Just to be precise... I've got root (titanium, copy to system works) busybox from market but it always says can't install on that phone. Tried manual installation without success. Tried gscript way but no luck.

Solved for me !!!
I finally managed to install xRecovery and Custom ROM using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
Thx rendeiro2005 and all the other
Everything goes fine with "easy way" procedure.
Then installed busybox from market plus installed xRecovery.
To access it press power button and then I use to clic several time back key until I can see the recovery menus.
I think my issue was because the previous root method I used gave me a 1.6 android system and therefore xRecovery installer may not work with it.
Thanks all.
hello rooted android 2.1
Never mind I got it working. Wasn't aware there were better flash tools out there and I found one that worked for me. Thanks to everyone who tried to help
the new Flashtool version 0.2.6 works pretty well
its does the rooting, and can help to install busybox, xrecovery.
Yes Flashtool can provide "all-in-one" tool.
Flash, root, clean junk files, install apk files in just one click, install xRecovery, etc, etc, etc...
DONĀ“T install busybox if you have xrecovery installed!!!
xrecovery
Hi everyone. I am at my wits end. I have followed everything to the letter to install xRecovery and it is not working. I have superuser working my phone is rooted and busybox is installed (root check says it is working) but the first time i tried the three apps in xRecovery were not all ticked. busy box had a cross saying something along the lines of no such directory. I reflashed my phone and went through the whole thing again and now i have red crosses on all three saying permission denied. I have gone into root explorer and everything is R/W however if i acces the three files on sdcard/data/com.zoz etc and go to permissions to turn them all on it says some file systems eg sdcards do not allow permission changes. I dont know if i need to do this but its the last thing i can think of. HELP!!!
I usualy root my phone through flashtool, its just a one click, be sure to enable the bugging and and click root. Make sure if superuser appears on ur phone, that u allow it 2!
Edit: Just read that uve successfully rooted ur phone. Did you try to install recovery through flashtool?
To make sure uve rooted ur phone, enter flashtool (enable debbugging first), click on Ask Root Perms, if ur phone IS rooted it will say so. Click on xRecovery (in flashtool ofcourse), and u will have it installed
Hey, there seems to be a few of us(or maybe it's just me) confused about how we can root after the new update.
I just wanted to know if there was a confirmed safe way to restore root.
Thanks
Update:
Thanks to superkev. Manual way works. I can also confirm it also.
Also remember to keep your phone awake (ie. not in the locked screen)

I tried the manual instructions from here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
Step 6 failed for me, possibly because I had used this method to root 2.3.4. The rest of it went perfectly. I think the 2.3.6 update changed the permissions of the su binary, so these instructions just reset that to what they're supposed to be. I am rooted again!

I can't seem to find any root information on bell atrix 2.3.6 either.
saw some unconfirmed reports that superoneclick worked, but it doesn't work for me just sits at "Failed to set prot mask"
and then "WaitforDevice" forever...
if anyone has legit root info for the bell atrix 2.3.6 posting it would be greatly appreciated.
All I want is to install it! But im in usa so I need someone to make a fruitcake of it for me. Oh and I have also read super one click is supposedly working for some.

I've got super one click working but superuser keeps denying all my root permissions without giving me a prompt.
DANGER!
So I tried SuperOneClick 2.3.1 and got my Bell Atrix 2.3.6 rooted.... all seemed good and Root Checker told me I was rooted. Light Flow got Super User permission and I thought I was gold!
Then my phone started freezing up and rebooting. Now I can't use the phone because it is crashing every 30 seconds. I would say avoid SuperOneClick (at least this version) for now!!
Oh, and SuperOneClick won't unroot my device so I'm kind of stuck. I would rather not reset my device and have to reinstall all my apps (which are backed up with Titanium Back-up, but which of course needs root to work...).
I'm just trying GingerBreak to unroot so we'll see how that goes.....
---------- Post added at 02:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:44 AM ----------
... OK... so GingerBreak unrooted my phone but it is still completely hooped and the crashing woes continue... anyone with a solution on which system files I might be able to replace to fix this?!?!?
Aaaarrrg!
I tried wit Pete's first and it failed but super one click worked right from the first attempt. Before doing that though, I did a factory reset and started from scratch. Then I restored my apps only with TB. All is OK except that in market my apps list is empty with a message saying that my purchased apps will appear here. I have read that it is a known problem, but not necessarily with this update or because of rooting. In my experience super one click has otherwise been OK. Hope that helps. Don't have a solution for you except maybe trying to do a factory reset first if you are able to and then try again.

Hey thanks. Yes, I ended up having to do a reset from the boot menu (power+vol down) and do an 'Android Recovery' which apparently wipes the system files and reinstalls the OS. My TB backups are still sitting on the internal SD but I am hesitant to re-root so I can reinstall TB and restore... what build of SuperOneClick did you use?
I tried with SuperOneClick 2.3.1.0 (latest). It says that it worked, but even after rebooting, my apps are being denied root access.
UPDATE:
I tried the manual instructions from here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root

I just updated to 2.3.6 and used the Briefmobile method to root and can also confirm that it is working. I had previously used this method to do 2.3.4 and had no issues on 2.3.6. Cheers
I might caution those who are not on AT&T about using the "manual" root method from BriefMobile. It was built with AT&T 2.3.4 files. Flashing the root.img in fastboot flashes those files to your /preinstall folder possibly hosing your Bell specific files. This has in the past, and possibly could in the future cause issues when trying to install future updates.
For those of you who have done it, can you look in /preinstall/md5 and see if you have att files?

superoneclick 2.3.1.0
this works flawlessly and on first attempt. so easy!
gingerbreak 1.2 didn't work this time, but it was useful to me for unrooting.
just make sure you do that before installing the update, and follow the superoneclick instructions.
too early to comment on battery life, and other than the keyboard I don't notice any aesthetic changes.
bell atrix
Remember to flash back the original preinstall image to avoid update issues.
Cheers!

That directory does contain some ATT and Cingular files. However, I used this method to root 2.3.4 and it didn't prevent me from installing the 2.3.6 update. I'm hoping I won't have any trouble going to ICS (fingers crossed that such a thing will even happen!)

Good deal. I had to help a few revert that folder when updating from 2.2.2 to 2.3.4 due to missing the gameloft stuff, but if it didn't effect your update that's good news.
Just in case, here's the 2.3.6 Bell stock preinstall.img to flash via moto-fastboot (thanks to NFHimself's new Gobstopper): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=C098P9IV

I used the manual way to root with the 2.3.6 update but TB is saying it can't can't gain root access and su keeps fc'ing on me. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I also tried the superone click method but during the exe install on my pc it keeps stopping saying i don't have an internet connection????

that's weird. you definitely don't need internet access to perform the root (i was offline), provided you have superoneclick and phone drivers installed i'd say. does the driver check feature complain about it too?
Yeah, i thought it was strange too. It doesn't give me that error with the driver check, only when it is going through the install process of the exe.
Sometimes you need to treat your phone like a computer when it starts acting weird, save yourself some hassle and just do a format/factory reset and start fresh.
i used Doomlord's Rooting Toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1319653 it worked in 30 sec
Link to the exact Superoneclick you used? I tried the Doomloader link but it's broken.
Hi, i have used the process on this website to try to root as well as SuperOneRoot and Vibrant one click root and none of them seem to work!
When i have to go into recovery mode it says E:\ signature verification failed
According to superoneroot my phone is rooted even though it has no superuser. Also, i downloaded a terminal emulator and typed in su and it says permission denied. Furthermore, i downloaded a root checker and tried that and it doesn't seem to work...
After looking on the internets for this problem it seems to have something to do with the update tmobile sent out after there froyo update. But i didn't really understand how to solve the problem...
so, can someone explain to me how to root the phone as of now?
Well... you could flash CWR and then flash a ROM (damn near all of them) that already comes rooted
YouTube a tutorial.

Get vibrant tool box make sure you go on your vibrant and turn on usb debugging, hit root in the program and BAM! (also install drivers if you need to)
The vibrant is the easiest phone to root YouTube it like randomfied said
SuperOneClick
Hey make sure you get the latest version of SuperOneClick, make sure USB Debugging is enabled, and make sure you computer recognizes your vibrant (The best way is to get the drivers from samsung/t-mobile and install them anyway). I have rooted from 2.1 and 2.2 both with SuperOneClick.
Hi guys I recently rooted my phone and thought that if I could refresh my tablet a bit with a new rom Id use it more so I decided to root that too.
I have followed a lot of the guides on here but am really having issues. The Superuser app just will not work, I have copying and pasting in the new version and rooting again, I have tried unrooting and doing it again with no superuser.apk file at all or a bin superuser file and still no.
I cant even check if the device is rooted correctly as root checker just will not come up with a result it just loads forever.
I tried installing SuperSU instead but it gets stuck on installing then it says there is another programme that may be conflicting and then it just gives up too.
What to I need to do to root this thing and have a working supersu/user app?!?
Thanks

I had the exact same issue just the other day. Is the rom a 4.3 version. They are apparently a little finicky. First, open developer options, and under the root part allow apps and adb. Then I flashed the supersu from this site here , and finally I simply re flashed the rom I wanted, and it worked.
