Uninstalled Lookout and Installed AVG antivirus in SGS2 (both free Versions) which is Better Lookout or AVG? and Is there any other Best Free Antivirus other than this two?
ESAT's nod32 when it comes out should be very good. However the beta may lock you out of the handset.

Lookout is the only AV worth its keep.
Avg only looks at the name of the app. Lookout actually scans the apps properly

Any additional app/service that runs in the background will increase battery drain, there's no way around that. The only relevant question is how much extra drain a particular app will cause.
That being said, I haven't used this particular app (yet...considering installing it now), but I imagine that any anti-virus software is going to place a relatively high demand on the battery; meaning you probably will notice a decrease in battery life.
You may be able to mitigate the effect by tweaking some settings within the application, but if you turn off too much you defeat the purpose of having the antivirus in the first place.
Do you really need an Antivirus in GSII?
I will never install one anyway.

An OS is an OS.. With Android being much more open the iOS, it would be a good idea.. But if you're careful, and know whats what, you should be fine C:
I suggest McAfee. It's free so far, works and looks fine. (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wsandroid.suite&feature=search_result)

I would prefer not to use one, but i am worried data stealing apps or ones that cost you money by making phone calls or texts.
There seems to be lots of free and payed ones around.
The battery life on the SGS2 is bad enough without extra software running in the background if i don't need it.
thanks
John.
Nope but some like to .

I've been using Android for quite a while now and would say it's not necessary at all.
As long as you're diligent in checking app permissions before installing anything you're not gonna have any problems. It's also a good idea to read through a few of the reviews on the market for any given app before installing to see if any other users are having any problems/concerns with it.
I'm using lookout, wouldnt say it uses much battery really. Never found anything yet though that is hopefully a good thing

Hi iam new to this forum.. sorry if it is not the right section to post this .
i want some free anti theft and anti virus softwares for Samsung galaxy s3 (which i got today ). iam new to android so please guide me. and also pls suggest me some useful hints regarding mobile maintenance. :silly:
(This should be moved to the Q&A forum)
Hey,
welcome to XDA forums.
A good experience I made with so far is avast as it provides some extra options besides antivirus, e.g. firewall to block certain apps to establish an internet connection, block certain calls (S3 has this now built in as native option however) etc.
Lookout on the other hand appeared rather bulky and not all features are free.
Yet the best part of avast is the anti theft feature (works also as standalone). It can be completely stealth and works with SMS commands. It especially benefits from rooted phones as that offers more options (e.g. full stealth, survives factory reset) but root isn't mandatory.
And it's all free of charge.
thank you for the reply...
i have few more doubts about the rooting..
1. how many rooting methods are there and which is the best and easy.
2.will i get official updates (like OTA i think) to rooted devicees.
3.iam very much confused abt the procedures explained in internet (i dont know much abt phone in depth...) pls explain the best rooted method.
and in the past hours with my mobile i noticed the battery drain... ie. within 7hrs 100% battery comes to 60's and 58% or so. is it normal?.i recharged. now what i have to do.
i just rooted my device... with no problems. thanks to the guide you people provided. but i have small issue regarding the avast anti-theft setup. i attached the screen shot of the problem. please guide me.

I use avast for antivirus and firewall. Lbe for application access. And prey for tracking. Prey is awesome I also watch all my computers with it.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I'm using WatchDroid for tracking and locking. It is (or at least at the time of buying it was) the only app properly supporting SMS-commands without active data network.
I prefer the (free) Dr.Web beta antivirus but it has less features than Avast.
Here's a rather detailed and independed antivirus test report for Android:
http://www.av-test.org/en/tests/android/
You can see in the PDF that Avast + Dr.Web both rank very high while other common names with good reputation such as AVG and Bitdefender are only good midfield.
You'd be surprised how many seemingly harmless apps are reported as Adware (usually push-notification spammers).
To date I've yet to get a real spy- or malware tough.
I think as long add you check permissions of apps, don't blindly install, you should be OK, I tend to run dr web every 2-3 weeks, I don't want a useless AC app clogging my phone up! for tracking, try phone locator pro, full refund within 24 hours I think, won top awards and far better than any others I've tried, plus support is top notch.

Thanks for the replies.
Till now iam good. I installed avast and rooted to enjoy more features.
I also solved my battery drain problm.
But i have a small doubt... in settings>battery>screen is showing 50 - 80% usage. l reduced the brightness and so. Is it normal? If not please tell me the solution. Thanks again for everything.

What makes you feel Android is a secure OS, and there "arent any virus coming in"? There have been several trojans for Android, and most users are woefully unaware of permissions and will agree to ANYTHING. Not that it would help if they didn't, considering that the permission system in Android is far from perfect.
As far as "Android is secure" is concerned: Every rooting toolkit proves otherwise. Android is not secure. Whether an anti-virus program will help to remedy this is another issue.

My real main reason for root is being able to block apps and this app works extremely well for that. Used to use it on my note 4 too. It blocks all ads in browsers and across all apps. You get a 30 day free trial but I went ahead and paid the 10 bucks he wants for the app. To me it's totally worth it. Oh and you don't need root to use it which is the best part!

You won't see a link in the play store because they don't allow ad blocking apps. Try this though.

I found something called webguard on the play store that seems to work exactly like you are explaining. Maybe they renamed it?
Since it's a app always running in the background and not a hosts file, how much does it affect battery life?
Not sure yet. I have adguard now also. I will do some initial tests on them and check back. Both seem to operate in the same exact manner. They create a local VPN connection to localhost and route all traffic through the VPN that is running on your phone. If the code is written well it should have very little impact on the battery.

I'm not sure. I've had it since day 1 with the phone so I can't really compare. He explains on his website that it will look like it's using lots of battery in your battery stats though because it's now routing all ad traffic through adguard so it will look like it's using a ton of battery. I don't really see that though.
Sent from my LGLS992 using XDA Free mobile app
I've used it for ages. I have 5 licences for 3 mobiles and two laptops. I swear by it.
It has no negative effect on battery. If it did, I wouldn't use it (it just looks like it does as all apps data is shown under the Adguard heading)... don't sweat it.
Don't forget to enable https filtering (I think that might currently be a Beta option only)... that way you won't get any Youtube advertisements. It's great.
Adguard and Battery
Adguard is showing up as one of the biggest battery users on my phone. About 15-20% using the phones allocation of battery usage. It is just below android system. I have been wondering about this. I still get decent battery. About 5 hour SOT without doing anything too processor intensive. If we get root I will probably go back to Adaway which has always worked well with no hit on battery.

LOL
There is no additional battery use. Read the Adguard FAQ, or even better, experiment for yourself and you will find out that there is actually a battery saving as the ads aren't downloaded (saving you juice and data).
The battery usage you are seeing as reported by the Android system is not generated by Adguard itself, it is generated by the apps concerned and this is 'assumed' by Adguard as it pipes all the data (and therefore battery reporting stats) on behalf of the apps.
LOL

Well I like how adguard shows stats per app. I am giving both of them a good thorough test starting with adguard. Seems great so far. I do see quite a few apps I never use pulling data and ads. Retailmenot for example pulled 24 ads in the first 5 minutes. I have never opened it on this phone.

Just to make it clear, this app has nothing to do with Adguard except they are from the same city
The fact that it is still in Google Play is surprising as it violates Google's "no ad blockers" term.

Thanks

Your app (adguard) seems much more finished. The I only reason I mentioned webguard is that I could not find adguard in the app store. I have adguard installed now and I am loving it. Crazy how fast websites load now!
I've been using Greenify for some time with pleasure but not sure I'm doing it efficiently and my device and OS is getting and getting old every day and although I used a heavily debloated version of stock ROM (Simpl ROM) my battery seems to lack of performance lately. So I need a real deal instruction to get maximum efficiency since I don't want to change my phone. I'd really appreciate any help for fine tuning in Greenify.
Not: Note 4 with stock-based 6.0.1 Simpl ROM and Rooted with SuperSU. Also, I installed Space Lemon kernel.

Everything gets old and dies including the battery in your device. Greenify will not save you from that fate. Nor will it substantially improve battery endurance on Android 6+ assuming your app portfolio is well behaved. Make sure 'doze on the go' is enabled in Greenify. The remaining knobs and dials will only yield minor benefits.

After market batteries are often not fresh and/or do not meet OEM specs. You should understand what is draining the battery before pursuing a replacement if a recent change made little/no difference. There are numerous XDA threads dedicated to this subject.

I had changed the battery twice during my usage period but I always bought it from the official Samsung service store. However, I decided to decrease the number of apps installed on my phone. After that, I try battery life again.
