What SGSII radio for AT&T? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I currently have the SGSII and Nexus S I 9020A on AT&T. Since I have flashed the KB3 radio on the Nexus S it has been nothing short of phenomenal.
I really want to keep the SGSII but the spotty radio performance has me waffling...
So which is the best radio in the US for AT&T?

Bumb for this. Ideas anyone?

I'd like to know this too. I've flashed KG6 and KH3 and both of them seem to be the same and neither give me very good data rates.

what data rates are you looking for?

Well i went through the whole thing with AT&T to get myself on the H+ APN that the new phones are on. Unfortunatly i'm only getting about 3 down 1 up at my best. Others have reported speeds of 7 down 2.5 up.

any help getting rid of constant drops to 3G from H+ would also be much appreciated

I added the unlimited 4g data plan by using a samsung infuse imei. So my plan is "4g" however I'm getting about 1.5 down and .800-1.0 up.
I even changed apn settings to match those in this thread.
I'm just wondering if this is a hardware problem or can a different modem correct these issues...

The Galaxy SII should work just fine with the at&t medianet settings. These are the settings I'm in and sometimes I can get download speeds of up to 7.5Mbps down.
Also, you don't need to be on that expensive quasi-4G plan b/c you can just use the medianet non-smartphone plan and it'll work just fine on the GSII.

in fact with newer sgsii firmwares if you dont have the 4g plan.. you will need to change apn this this to get it to work on older plans like media net and my unlimited family plan data.

Yeah i had to use those before hand and i didn't get any difference in speed. Maybe it's just my towers in this area or the radio i'm using.

any conclusive answers?

[FIX] AT&T SGS2 Data Speed Issue's (Correct APN Settings)

Hey all, hope this is the correct forum to post.
This is a Fix it guide I wrote for AT&T user's. These are the correct settings for your AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II
I hope this helps everyone who has been possibly experiencing slower speed's on AT&T Mobility.
1'st, make sure you are on the CORRECT data plan.
1. HSPA+ 4G 2GB plan OR for Unlimited Customer's
2. Smartphone Personal Data plan with 4G SOC code : HSDPPB
Then under your APN settings, I have found personally that WAP.CINGULAR is not the right APN. When your tethering you can tell what the correct gateway you should be connected to by visiting speedtest.net tethered to a PC and seeing when you run the test by your IP, it should show SERVICE PROVIDER and NOT AT&T GLOBAL NETWORK SERVICES.
Wap.Cingular connects you to the older gateway made for 7.2 phone's. I found in real world AT&T testing it caps/throttles you at around 7.5Mbit/s or slower.
FIX:
Under you Access Point Settings click on each APN you already have then in the menu, delete them.
Next create a new APN:
Menu Key, New APN.
Name : AT&T HSPA+
Important step: tap APN and enter exactly : phone
That's it! It's literally just "phone", not kidding. Leave everything else blank including Username and Password!
Scroll down to APN Type, Select Internet only
Hit the Menu Key, and hit SAVE
Your will return to APN settings, go to the APN you just created called AT&T HSPA+, tap the dot next to the APN and make sure it turns green!
Now for the MMS settings
Step 2 : MMS Settings
At the APN settings hit the menu key again and create a new APN, call it MMS
Under APN again just type : phone
go down to MMSC and fill the fields as follows
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: MMS only
Now again hit the menu key and save. This will be your default MMS setting and you will not need to select it.
Once your back at the APN menu with the fields you just created, make sure AT&T HSPA+ still has a green got by it.
Now hit the home key, then turn your phone off and back on.
You should have full internet access if you have the correct data plan. While you may not experience faster data speed's in every area. This APN will allow you to have more consistent and through speed's, especially in an AT&T "4G" HSPA+ enhanced backhaul area.
Here show's the difference in the two APN's. The first SpeedTest is the Wap.cingular, the second is the one we just created.
Old APN:

New APN: Better ping and better speed, Notice Service Provider vs. AT&T Gobal
If you guys have any questions feel free to ask me in the forum or PM me.
I really hope this help all of you Galaxy S 2 users on AT&T!!
UPDATE 07/17/2011 - Possible slow data speed explanation theory..
Ok. So I think I may have found a reason why the SGSII is slower than phone's like the Infuse and has so many radio problems.
You guys remember with the Apple iFail 3G through the iPhone 4 on AT&T and other GSM providers, with the severe signal issues and dropped calls??
It was later tied to the Infineon modem in the handset powering the devices..
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10015301-37.html
Well unfortunately, stupid Samsung put an Infineon baseband modem chipset in the Samsung Galaxy S II's.
To me I have the SAME issue's I was having with the iPhone 4.... Coincidence or not?? You decide. But the SGSII has the chip, it is HSPA+ capable but of course since Infineon makes it, it likely cant hit H+ speeds.
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/03/silicon-art-samsung/
The chip, the Infineon PMB5703, provides radio-frequency transmission and reception functions relating to the devices’ baseband and 3G features.

i had to do this when i went from o2 to three lol but does need doing to make everything work ok
Just tried it; my download speed has roughly 50% (4 Mbps to 6), but upload hasn't changed much. I'm in Duluth, GA, just outside downtown, and I don't think we've gotten HSPA+ yet. The Speedtest app results say it's a UMTS connection. However, the H+ icon on the phone stays on.
I've gotten HSPA connections at my office a few miles down the road in Norcross; I'll try it from there on Monday. The HSPA in Norcross isn't too fast -- I've never gotten more than 2.1 Mbps out of it.
FWIW, I'm on the old $30/month smartphone personal plan.
WoW! Thanks - I just got a SGSII and spent 1+ hours on the phone with AT&T yesterday trying to get this info and I got nowhere with them - had me put in the same old wap.cingular. This is great
Didn't experience any difference from the default and this here on the beach Miami, FL. Will try at a different place later.

Ironically, those applications would almost require unlimited plan, not the 2GB (or 4GB tethering) plan.
Now you need to ask yourself, "Do I want to pay $25-$30 more per month for less allowance and slight bump in speed?"

Mine seemed to automatically fix the settings when i put in the three sim. Is there a special setting or something? How is your speed?
It required that I put MCC and MNC values.
Then
Had no Internet connection whatsoever
Please guide
Thanks
No difference in speeds at all for me here in the SF Bay Area which is an HSPA+ covered zone.
I am getting slower speeds on the SDS2 than the Infuse.
I posted this a week ago when I took the settings from my infuse, had a few people say it didn't work for them but its been working great on my phone. Figures.
Long Island today:
5824/1555
3734/2218
5016/2144
the signal isn't consistent. i'll get a very fast connection for awhile then it will drop back to mid 2's for download and 1.1-1.2 for upload.
Changing the settings made a big difference. I also have an atrix and swapping my SIM into the atrix (which has the same apn settings for default) yields similar results.
Just tried this out, i can't seem to receive an MMS photo, it just says downloading.
*EDIT1* i seem to have no data at all now, gonna check to make sure i added everything correctly

Many of us are on the $15 or $10 unlimited data non-smartphone plan. I'm assuming there's no way to use these HSPA+ settings without switching to an official "4G" smartphone data plan?
I rechecked the settings 3 times now and i can't seem to get a data connection. I'm on the AT&T website right now trying to see if i have the right data plan but this site is so confusing it's hard to tell.
haha,
Just got off the phone with AT&T, after putting me on hold for 20 minutes they finally told me there's nothing they can do to help me get data back because i'm not on an AT&T phone. Trying to find my old atrix to copy the apn, hopefully that fixes it.
*EDIT2* Changed the APN type to wap.cingular and i'm finally showing the H+ and 3G notifications up top. Data speed is crazy slow however. I guess it doesn't like 'phone' as the apn type

Mine is sat on ATT PHONE by default and I am getting 5down 1up in a "non HSPA+" area (that was HSPA though...they are turning it on and off while testing it.)

thanks for the info. I normally get anywhere between 1.5-2 Mbps down, 1.5Mbps up, but lately it's been around 300 kbps down... quite frustrating. I wasn't sure if it was the ROM I was running (thus an APN issue) or ATT network here in Denver. I'm leaning towards the latter.
edit: oh, and Denver is supposedly a HSPA+ city according to the ATT network map... my speeds shouldn't have gone down when they "increased that backhaul"

I just checked your area and there are a couple of towers having issues right now in Denver, but a simple reboot should through you to a different tower.
The APN settings for AT&T SGS2 will not work on an international SGS2 unless you're on an official 4G plan. If you're on a grandfathered unlimited 3G plan or the data for non-Smart Phones plan you'll lose data connectivity. Also, you can't return to the Cingular 410 default because the network now recognizes the international SGS2 as a 4G phone. If the default's changed, you'll have to build a new APN with the old Cingular 410 settings. If you need them, they're in a thread in the SGS2 forum.

You can call and change from the grandfather 3g unlmited to the 4G plan and not lose the unlimited. You MUST be on the 4g plan to see 4g speeds out of the phone.

I was talking about the data speeds, not migrating a 3G plan to a 4G plan. There's a lot of discussion regarding that on the international SGS2 forum. The data for non-Smartphones plan is the only one that's still available. On that plan, I'm getting fake-4G speeds (where available).

[Q] Slow data speed on AT&T

Hello all,
I just received my S yesterday and cut down my AT&T SIM to a MicroSIM
The phone recognized it immediately, but I had to enter in the APN settings by hand.
It connected to the network fine and I have an "H" icon, but the data speeds seem much slower than with my X10.
I ran a test with the Speed Test.net APP and get anywhere from 0.15 mb/s to 0.8 mb/s. On my X10 (same SIM, same plan) I'd consistantly get over 1.5 mb/s.
I am on the MediaNet data plan. Like a mentioned, my X10 worked fine and was much faster.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for confirming that I had that right.
I just checked AT&T's coverage map and I'm right on the edge of a new HSPA+ expansion, so I'm hoping it's a coincidence and they're in middle of transitioning.
This is mine.
Another one in a different location.
Incredibly slow speeds
I just got my microsim from ATT today and I've got abismal results.
168kbps down and 139 up.
Checked and rechecked the settings, but they're the same you all are using.
Not sure what's wrong here...
Any ideas?
$15 MediaNet plan or smartphone plan?
I have the smartphone plan and I only ran one test in one location. Results were 2.4 mbps download and 1.1 mbps upload.

Neither seems to make much difference. Can't get to 1mbps reliably and mostly comes in at around 700.
Not sure what the problem is, but it's KILLING ME!

We're in the same boat - this is driving me nuts!
I'm travelling for work today and I'm at the Houston airport and getting anywhere from 1.5 Mbps to 3.5 Mbps down and a ~380ms ping using the speedtest.net app.
I tried re-entering the settings that Augie suggested but they were exactly what I had before.
Maybe it would help to get a new SIM card from AT&T? I'm using the same 3G card that I got with my w810 walkman phone back around 2006.
Well you'regetting better results than me. I don't think it's the sim card as I just got a new one today.

I just got the phone, and configured an APN with just "phone" nothing else filled and got between 2.6 and 4.1 mpbs downloading and 1mbps uploading, so I don't think the problem is with the APN but your local network, antennas around.
I really like the look of the S but like the spec of the Ion. Don't know which one to get. Where and how much you guy pay for yours? I think best price I look was about $600.00 free shipping.
Well, I seem to be getting better speeds now (consistently over 3mbps). Like I mentioned, I'm traveling right now, so I don't know if it well be better when I get back home. I guess we'll see.

And, what kind of speeds are you getting?

Fido LTE with S3? (canadian users)

Just received my S3 and having had a iPhone 4 in the past I've always kept my microsim and just managed to put it in whatever phone I've had. anyways popped the sim in the S3, to find my internet wouldn't work checked the APN settings and there was one for FIDO LTE? none the less i added my fido.internet.ca apn and it started working but with really bad speeds as usual. Am i using the wrong APN for H+?
point of thread i never knew FIDO had LTE?

I don't think that Rogers has allowed Fido phone access to their LTE network

I have the same one as you the international version the I9300
Fido has no LTE, and no access to LTE phones or rogers LTE Network. Not sure about LTE Phones being able to access hspa+ 4g networks,

Nah. But apn settings get filled as soon as you enter sim card and boot.
This gives us a clue that eventually, probably with next Iphone launch, fido will get access to lte, which would open the doors for the rest of the lte devices.

fido-core-appl1.apn
No password
No user name
its shold work.
Wap.fido is for wap
internet.fido is mostly for H
fido-core-appl1.apn usually for H+
The Lte since rogers has Lte for sure fido will have it too.

LTE APN settings for Fido:
APN: ltemobile.apn
MMSC: http://mms.fido.ca
MMS Proxy: 205.151.11.13
MMS Port: 80
APN Type: internet + mms
And yes: Fido does have LTE. they've had it for months.
But, do we get access to the LTE network with our international phones? I thought we didn't have the right antennas or something. I already m on those settings but I get H+ max

[Question] Network speed on AT&T network

I unlocked and flashed alliance ROM on my TMo S5. I set up the APN as per AT&T S5 settings.
Now, though it shows 4G LTE, it still gives me HSPA speeds only. I used to have like 45+ Mbps speeds on my S3 and on my AT&T S5. But on this one I am barely hitting 12 Mbps.
Did anyone get any better speeds than this?
Wondering this as well. Copies my friends apn settings from his AT&T Galaxy S5 and after doing a speed test I'm getting roughly 14down and 5up. Then again this is sort of out in the middle of nowhere and not where I live(but it still shows LTE)

If you have the modem that comes with the NE5 update, you're gonna have to roll back to the previous one.

Yes I went back to the NCH Modem and got my 30+ down and 10+ up speeds back. If your phone came with the NE5 update then you will get vary low speed this is a bug in the new modem which T-Mobile is aware of and will change. Check out the dev Forum.

I assume you're on AT&T network as well, can you post your APN settings?
The relevant fields on mine are as follows:
APN: phone
mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authetication type: none
APN type: default, mms,supl,hipri,fota
Under about(rooted and on Alliance), baseband shows ANCH.
This is where I got my APN settings from and haven't had any issues. I was even on the new modem and was still hovering around the same data speeds.

After returning home and checking LTE in my general living area, my speeds are back up to par. Seeing between 40-50down and 10-15up.
I am on NCH modem. Even the APN settings are the same as mentioned above.

While inside the house(where I live) the galaxy s5 sees 14-16 down and 4-6up. My lumia 1020(AT&T version) keeps a steady 26 down and 10up with the same APN.
When I went out of my home to a busy hub about 2 miles from home, I got 18 down. Looks like modem isn't optimized for at&t networks.
The top result in attachment is 2 miles from my home, and the bottom one when I'm inside my home.

Speeds aren't bad but they could be better. I guess we're stuck on waiting for a better modem that is optimized for them.
AT&T
I bought a 900T for use on AT&T, I'm rooted and unlocked and input my APN settings but they won't stick or save. Every time i save them they disappear. Any input?
Ok. So here it is. After talking to AT&T customer care, and then he fiddling something, I got back close to LTE speeds on my TMo S5. Post screenshot. The top two are the recent ones, AFTER the call, and the rest from BEFORE the call.
