[Q] PC Folder sync over wifi? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I asked this question in the 7" tab forums, didn't release there was a 10.1
Has anyone had any luck with automatic syncing of folders from their PC to their tab over their home wifi connection?
We don't have unlimited data here, so can't use a service such as Dropbox.
I basically want to setup a folder on my PC which holds recorded TV, digital books, etc... and when I get home and my tablet picks up the wifi network - it sync the content in that folder.
Running Windows 7... all the applications I've tried either time out, or corrupt the data on the tab... I've also been unable to get the FTP versions working stable.

Try SugarSync. You'll be amazed

SugarSync in great but it is cloud based app.
If you need "pure" wi-fi sync try SimpleSync.

Doesnt seem to be compatible with the 10.1?

I can't tell you for sure. Sorry. I don't have 10.1. What is exactly the problem?

Market wont allow me to download, says its incompatible.

Synx might fit the bill?

Thanks - ended up returning my tablet because of the display issues, 2 with dead pixels, 1 with newton rings...
Might go for the Asus Transformer...or wait for something else, will try them.

Sorry to hear that, I returned 2 Asus Transformers with similar issues. I hope you get a good Tablet whatever the manufacturer.

What would be the difference in using a sync program to download music/videos versus just copying it to the tab?

Because copying it to the tab would requre the USB connection.
Instead of a wifi sync, why not just mount a windows/cifs network folder onto your tab. This is what I do.
Of course this requires a custom kernel that has cifs module.. but totally worth it.

Gotcha. So its just easier to copy through wifi, so you can freely add and move songs and have it update w/o having to connect. Which SYNC program do you use? I would use dropbox, but I dont want it to sync all my other drop box stuff.

I'm not sure you get wheat I am saying. I don't use a sync program but simply share via my network drive that is mounted on my tab. When I want to copy to local storage, I just use any file manager app.

Could you explain how to mount a windows/cifs network folder onto your tab? Thanks.

You can try this - websharing
It's free in android market.

I set up network shares on my windows PC, then I use File Manager HD to copy files from the network shares to my tablet.
This seems like a better and easier option to me than trying to get a custom kernel and setting up a share on the tablet.
I assume setting up a network share would be something that was always on and open. On a tablet it could be a constant drain as it would be another constant running process, and also it could be a security risk as you take your tablet out onto open public wifi access points.
leaving the sharing to your home PC, on only your home network seems like the better option.

I haven't tried it but the WD Live drive with the WD2go software is listed as being able to sync folders with mobile devices.
I have tried the WDphotos with one of our WD NAS drives at work and it did work.

[Q] WiFi Transfer?

Hello all,
I would like to have your suggestions regarding any app that is able to enable WiFi transfer between my Windows 7 PC and the phone.
I had an app on my old phone that was enabling WebDav access and it was allowing you to map a network drive on my computer so you can just open it and drop in whatever you wanted without cables. I don't recall the name of the app.
Any suggestions?
Kies air is the best for this. I'm attempting to find it on the phone, or Samsung Apps store right now.

If you mean KIES via wifi then its built in under the more settings menu on the phone settings. Thanks but this still needs the kies suite to be running and you cant even see thumbnails of the photos. I would like something better than that.
Remote Web Desktop. Been using the full version for a long time, can't fault it.

Apparently Kies Air is browser based on the PC so no need to install Kies Suite IIRC? its in the Google Play store but I haven't installed it yet.
Thanks all for your replies! You gave me nice ideas.
I was thinking something more like a WebDav Server app that was allowing you to create a network drive of the phone on "My Computer".
I did find a few with the best being this one but I still found it a bit slow.
Then I tried Kies Air a couple of days ago and I really liked the interface it has. I copied over a 750MB file using both Kies Air and WebDav Server and Kies Air was a couple of minutes faster on copying it to the device. It took around 3-4 minutes which is pretty cool.
Given the nicely done layout and the speed, I don't really care it's browser based and I'm going to use it.
It even allows you to create a shortcut on the desktop.
Thanks again all!
I'm glad that you were able to get it. I didn't know that it was in the Play Store. I have now downloaded it. I used to get it from the Samsung Apps on my GSII. Please press thanks since I recommended this app to you.
I use the app ES File Explorer which have WebDAV & FTP. Really good app. It can be also used in a rooted device.

Airdroid

I think it's great. Anyone else using it got any tips?
I use it... Sadly, the QR function doesn't work (the camera won't start) and the screenshot thing doesn't work too (even if rooted).
I just downloaded it based on your suggestion and I have to say, this app kicks ass. No more USB cable, ADB, exporting files from dropbox, everything syncs seamlessly. Just what I was looking for.
I use it for a while and I love it. I also have the with cam to scan code.. This must be linked to our device as utilisé working on my mobile phone

Look the email I sent to the developers. I hope they answer, at least :fingers-crossed:
Airdroid on Asus Transformer Pad TF300T
Hi there! First, I want to THANK YOU for this amazing app you created. I use it all the time, and I love it.
I'm sending this email because the QR Code reader of the app doesn't work on my TF300T: it opens a black screen, without the camera. This is the only problem I have with your app, and it would be really great if you fix this (since it will be easy to connect to airdroid, no password needed).
I would also like tomake a little sugestion. When the app runs on a tablet in landscape mode (horizontally), airdroid forces the screen to use the portrait mode (vertically). This is really annoying, especially if I have the dock keyboard connected with the tablet.
Well, thanks in advance, and good luck with your project

im talking about multiple directories at one time, as sometimes I transfer folders and files and it only lets you transfer multiple files, not multiple folders,
best option is to use ftp server/client as this works, until fixed,
please explain
Could you explain how you connect thru "ftp server/client". Thanks
Check out swiftftp, works a treat on both my tf300and sgs2
Thanks. Will do.
unfortunately for me this app is really slow when trying to access anything from their website. Takes ages for messages and files to show up on the site. I'm using a fibre optic connection so shouldnt be an issue!

Which - airdroid?

OMG! Just discovered "Wireless Storage" in the QSlide menu... holy sh**!

I haven't seen anyone point this out yet, but this is almost the single coolest thing on this phone...
Basically, when you enable it, it makes your sdcard accessible via a CIFS/SMB share! So when you turn it on, you can access your sdcard contents wirelessly via your Windows/Linux/Mac workstation just as if it were any other file share.
Just turn it on, open Windows Explorer (or equivalent on other OS) and mount the phone using its IP:
\\ip.address.of.phone\
You'll see a vs980_4g_lte folder and inside is sdcard0. This is *so* much faster than dealing with MTP to copy things to/from the phone. Go ahead and mount it as a drive letter if you want, or just use it via the UNC path.
I am in awe... why isn't this part of AOSP? Yet another reason to hang on to the stock OS...
Reason #16 for me to get this phone!!!

Wait... ah yes, okay. I see. It's in that "tool bar" thing where the "QSlide Settings" button is. My mistake.
Thanks for this. I wondered what it was but didn't bother to really check it out. This is brilliant. However, I've been having issues in general pushing large folders (several gigs) to the the phone whether it's via ADB, MTP, or now wireless storage. It seems to get stuck on certain files for some reason and can never finish. Anyone else experiencing this? I might have to start my own thread because this is really irking me.
Followup: Now it seems to be going through and speeds are pretty decent but still slower than ADB push. I'll try it larger files later and see if the speed improves.

What kind of speed do you get? I tried copying some music files to phone, and averaged about 1.2 MB/s over wireless N.
Anyone had any issue with their phone showing up on their network? Laptop/desktop/printer show up just fine.....phone is nowhere to be found, yet it connects to wifi just fine. Am I missing a setting on the phone that allows it to be detected?

[Q] Kindle 8.9 HDX Questions

I have a couple of questions...
Under Music it says "No Music was found on your device" and it doesn't seem to allow me to click any of the buttons to open more menus etc. I can login via my PC and see my Cloud Music, I can login via the web, but not via the Kindle. Any ideas? I am in New Zealand.

Hello mate!
as for the music, i use google music, but the few times i tried cloud stuff in the tablet, it seems you have to either transfer stuff via USB or download stuff so then it all gets saved into the cloud service... again i havent paid much attention to this, so perhaps any other member may provide some more input...
I have installed Switkey and is rocking!
only issue is that, due to the nav bar, you loose space out of the screen and thus need to move a bit to the left the keyboard in order to fully see all the keys, other than that dont worry, it wont harm your device nor OS.

Which Cloud service are you referring to?
I side-loaded CloudAround and have been using that to stream music from my box.com account. It's working pretty well so far, though I had some issues getting it to read all of the ID3 tags initially. I found that I could just re-save any unrecognized tag data using MP3Tag, and CloudAround would pick it up after that.

Question Android Transfer Doesn't Connect

I have an S23U with up-to-date software and a Mac Book Pro running OS Ventura 13.2.1. I have installed 'Android File Transfer' on the laptop as directed by the software but the laptop and phone will not connect, despite my switching both off and on, trying other USB-C cables, etc. Has anyone any suggestions as to why this might be, please? As things stand I can only transfer files wirelessly (and slowly) via Google Drive. Edit - I have now tried uninstalling and re-installing AFT, removing Kies and Smart Switch apps from the laptop and enabling developer status on the phone to allow USB de-bugging. Nothing has allowed the phone to be connected to the Mac Book Pro. BTW, I assume I don't need to install AFT on the phone as well, as that isn't mentioned on their site?
When you have the usb plugged into the pc and phone do you have a notification on the phone that says something like usb connect or charging or something? If so I'd tap that notification and it opens an android setting that lets you choose what to do with that usb connection charging, file transfer, etc. Make sure that it is on file transfer. Default is charging. And if this isn't the issue then I'm no more help because i have no other ideas

If all else fails you could always set up a local network folder so you don't have to use gdrive so it wouldn't have to go to internet and back it would just be over your network

Yes, I've removed both of those from the laptop and the phone has never had them. It seems hard to avoid the conclusion that Samsung have made it impossible to connect the S23U (and other S23s?) with AFT to transfer files - a commercial decision, perhaps? Looks like I'll have to go back to GD. I'm a keen photographer and have ony just taken the plunge into phone photography (I still use my proper cameras most of the time) so I use the 200mp setting a lot - hence large files and slow transfer on GD, but so be it.

There's another app called openMTP. You could try that or file transfer using ADB. ADB is foolproof and will work as long as the computer recognizes your device.
Thanks for this. I looked up MTP and below is an interesting extract from the blurb - is it correct that AFT is "officially dead"? If so that would explain why I have wasted so much effort trying, but failing, to use it!
OpenMTP overviewOpenMTP is a Free and Open-source alternative to Google's officially dead Android File Transfer app for macOS. Use OpenMTP to transfer files between macOS and Android phone using your phone's USB cable.

OK, again - thank you. I have tried OpenMTP and it doesn't work, despite my having followed all the FAQs, etc. ADB is above my abilities, requiring as it does a knowledge of 'programming-speak'. Looks like I only have GD as my option - perhaps I am unusual in having an Android phone and an Apple laptop, but I wouldn't have thought it was that rare. Is it thought on this forum, I wonder, that Samsung have pulled out all the stops to make their new products as incompatible as possible with Apple's?

Have you enabled Firewall on your Mac?
If so, you'll have to add this app as an exception, so your phone can communicate with it.
Alternatively, you can setup/ enable SMB service on your Mac and then connect to it using a file manager on your phone. This doesn't require internet to work. Same holds true for other file transfer protocols like SFTP, FTP, etc.
If you're not aware of these, let me know and I'll help you set it up.
