[Q] How to block data only for few apps? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I search how to block data only for few apps.
I don't found on forum ( may be too much things on xda )
My idea is that I can use facebook when I'm roaming and the other apps can't have an access to data because my plan have not data roaming include.
Anyone have a solution to choose which apps can have an access to data?
Thank you
Space
ps: sorry for my bad english

Hey..
In CM7 ther is a function called Permissions Management where you can manage the usual android permissions for each app individually..
There is also an app on the market ("LBE Privacy Guard") which can do this..
It needs your phone to be rooted.
But I don´t know if you can control acces to data roaming..
And yeah, my English isn´t better..

Thanks for your answer.
I will try LBE privacy guard.
If other people have other app for it, I take it too

I use droidwall from the market
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App

I've tried LBE and droidwall.
LBE is an awesome firewall and the possibilities are very big. Too big for me.
Droidwall is good too and it's perfect for me
Thank you so much all

How to control apps access to GPRS?

I want to have the control of which apps can access GPRS and which cannot. As soon as I switch on the Mobile data connection I want only certain apps to have access to GPRS. How can I do that?
you can turn off background data but some apps like bollywoodji will still user the data connection whenever it is active.
Try Droidwall from the market.

Sounds perfect!! Any other alternate apps which don't require rooting?
There should be enough firewalls on the market that don't require root. Although root is good .
Just search for Firewall and you shall find. Block the apps you need and you're done!
Cheers.

The apps that I saw in the market mostly needed rooting. Or only monitored calls and sms. Can u recommend and app?

what you are trying to do is to make android filter some of its outbound communications.
There are two ways:
1. revoking permission
2. change the router settings so that the app can't connect
1. is nearly impossible without errors. too bad.
2. is possible only with root. no root = no goodies. root your phone.

Droidwall Alternative

For those of us who want to block network connection, certain permissions, etc. but can't use droidwall (because our kernel doesn't support it) we now have two alternatives!
Permissions denied (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.stericson.permissions) and LBE Privacy Guard (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lbe.security)
I use LBE Privacy Guard and it works like a charm on my X10MP running CM7 v14.5 by slade87. Haven't tried Permissions denied but it looks like it has similar functions.
I am also usimg lbe privacy guard in minicm7 in x10 mini and it works flawless. Also never knew that many of the installed apps take so many information from our device. This app has lots of options to give full control over the installed apps. Great app. Kudos to dev.
Another vote for LBE Privacy Guard here
It's a real eye opener what many apps try to access!
Do they have a whitelist of allowed applications that can use data over 3g?
With droidwall you can sett those programs that can use 3 and block all others, would want something like that .

You can set which apps have access to data. Unfortunately, it doesn't distinguish between wifi and 3g. So the app either has access or not.
Another vote for LB
Im using CM6 1.01 of notbodyall, and LB privacy guard do a great job. Thanks for the suggestion.

Found that out,-thats one app i would need. To be able to use 3g and only allow some apps to use data.

completely ban internet access to certain applicaitons

i have xperia sola ICS 4.0.4 ,
although we can restrict background data , but cant restrict wifi or foreground data ..
how do i restrict internet access completely to an application so that it doesn't automatically takes my precious internet data !!
blacklist or whitelist features ??
so ?? how to do this ??
Droidwall or something like Avast Mobile security with an in built firewalll.
As mentioned above, use Droidwall on your rooted phone...

how's the battery consumption of this app , is it light on resources ??
i guess it will be like , apps continuously asking for internet and firewall will block it , hence more battery usage ??

No its very light on resources, Droidwall only needs to apply an iptables tweak when you start your phone or change settings. You can actually disable Droidwall and your settings will stick until the next reboot.
And root firewall is doig the same as droidwall

[Q] Popup asking for Internet Access?

I like LBE Privacy Guard, especially for its on-demand permission requests when an app asks to access my SMS Inbox or whatnot; I like that I can ensure that it never accesses it, always does without asking, or continues to ask each time.
I'm also using the firewall with mixed results; I don't like having to choose each app and whether it's allowed to access the internet via 3g/wifi ahead of time. I'd like a popup request with similar options (though I guess it would be more like a timeout rather than per-session, e.g. "yes it can access the internet over my 3g connection but only for the next 10 minutes."
Is there already an app that does this? I've checked a few firewall apps like Droid Wall (and a few similar apps) and they don't offer this on-demand (or on-app-accessing-internet, I suppose!)
I'm rooted, of course, so I'm not constrained there.
+1!!! Looking for the same thing! Trying to hunt the hog that sucks my data!
Thanks!!!

I reckon that LBE Privacy Guard should help you with that: you can switch on traffic monitoring and get a listing of how much data each app has used.
I'd advise you to do this for a week and then switch it off (after you've worked out what's costing you money), as the data monitor drains battery faster!
Thanks. I already use LBE and My Data Manager. Turning APS ON one by one I try to find the sucker
But it would be easier with pop-up type app.

[Q] When apps can use their permissions?

I'm always very careful about what apps I install and their permissions, but I got this doubt for a long time. I already know what some Android permissions do and which of these are potentially dangerous.
Now let's assume an app asks for permissions to read my contacts, access the internet, read the identity of the phone, read the user position, etc.
When I use an app (mostly games) I always turn off wifi, bluetooth, gps and sometimes even the sim via airplane-mode. Now that app can easily collect all the data it wants but would never be able to send them. Am I correct?
My doubt is, when apps can send data? Is it only when the app is effectively running (also in background) or can do the same while, for example, updating the app via Google Play?
If it doesn't, I would probably download most of the apps I discarded because of their stupid permissions...
App permissions are always headache!
apps will always ask for various stupid permissions.even though they not require such permissions.
I think,,
how the apps collect and send data is upto the developer!!
Even though you put ur phone in AirPlane mode.the apps may or may not collect the contacts details frm your phone & may update to their server when data connection is detected..
Some applications will run in background as a seevice, even though they are not opened or running in foreground.
when u install an app you must be aware of the permissions granted.dont install apps that requires suspicious permissions.
if u are rooted there are some apps which can block permissions requisted by apps.
good luck....

I already heard of such apps but never found one. Could you please tell me some of them?
Thanks for the answer, anyway it really sounds like "I don't know and we'll never know"... it's sad
Is there anybody really sure about what the apps can do and give a nice rest to my neverending question?
Yes.. I already mentioned.
the permission requirements by the app can be explained only by the developer of that particular app.
I had developed an app myself 9 months before.which requires gps location along with hardware control permission etc...
as a developer of this app I can steadly says that my app will update ur device location soon after u switch on ur data conn.
you can find some apps and their reviews here... http://www.howtogeek.com/115888/
Oh, so my hopes are totally crushed.
Looks like they are more problematic than I imagined. I'll keep skipping 90% of the apps on the market.
Thanks a lot for that link!
Edit: I'd add, Jesus Christ, how funny to see that on Android spyware is legalised:
"Angry Birds Space – along with many other apps – has permission to view the device’s serial number and monitor the phone numbers you call."
