I've flashed my Galaxy S2 with Odin several times and it has worked fine until yesterday, when I tried to flash again, and everything just froze.
I followed the normal instructions for flashing and the phone just stopped at the "downloading" screen where it says, "Do not turn of target!!".
So it has been, for several hours now. The Odin window on my computer seems to be waiting... but for what? Will it ever time out?
Is it normal that a flash session can take several hours?
Is it safe to interrupt it?

Odin will flash, takes less than 5 minutes.
Is there any data running that you can see? I mean at the bottom left. I would suggest you turn off the phone, battery pull, wait for 5 minutes, and reflash back.
If it semi bricked, use JIG to revive it.
Either way, you can't be letting the phone there for the next few days etc right?
Did you click Start in Odin??
Although i don't have an s2(will be getting one soon) did you try to reset your pc? When i was flasing my sgsl i was stuck in this situation where odin seems to freeze everytime. I restarted my pc and poof, flashed without a problem
Edit: was flashing successful? If so maybe you should follow the instruction from the post below.

This might sound stupid but did you have 'auto-reboot' checked? It happened to me once even though I have flashed hundreds of times. Odin was still open after flashing a kernel and never reset.
Start was clicked - yes.
Re boot was checked - yes.
I reset my computer and restarted my phone and - now it's still frozen, but with an icon on the center showing three icons in a line. First is a phone, second is a exlamation mark and third is a computer. Yiipiiiee. It doesn't boot. I can't get into recovery mode. Download mode does work however, but still the same behaviour. It freezes if I try to flash it.
Now what? Where is that reset-button which resets the phone and clears its brain down to original mode? A simple "brain wash" would be nice.
Is there anyway out of this "freeze of death" ?
Flash CWM kernel, download CM7 rom, copy it on SDCard (mount USB storage in CWM, connect to PC via USB, copy ROM), flash ROM from CWM

Try to go into recovery mode and factory reset and clear cache and try flashing again (make sure you are on download mode)
Sent from my GT-I9003 using XDA Premium App
Hold power button to off it (hold a lil longer for this).
Then Go into recovery mode (power, home button and volume up at same time). Try do wipe all data, cache and even dalvik. Reboot and see if that works.
Alternatively, at the same place, go into restore backup.

Recovery mode doesn't work - nope. But thanks anyway. It's nice to see that people at least try to help. Big hugs to you all.
If I try to flash CWM, I come into the same freeze again. Mindbending stuff ala Samsung, huh. They clearly don't make idiot-safe products. I'm stuck. My next phone might be a StarTAC...
Has happened to me before. KIES was opened. I closed all KIES files and the flashing fun started again~
Good point, make sure Kies isn't running when using Odin!
Also, now that you've flashed CWM, can't you boot on it?
Kies is not running and whatever I flash - it freezes. The green progress bar in Odin reaches maybe 1 cm, but no blue progress bar is visible on the phone as usually happens when flashing. It just says, "Downloading... Don't turn off target!!"
Am I slowly heading towards the brutal-axe-method?
Sounds like the NAND is damaged to me, but I'm no expert...
"NAND" means? Why does it sound like it's damaged? How can it get repaired?
NAND is the flash chip (internal sdcard). Seems that its damaged because you're unable to fully flash it.
I don't think you can have that repaired (if the NAND is truly damaged, like I said I'm no expert), you'd have to get the phone replaced.
With all respect, let's hope you aren't an expert, but better. But has anyone else interrupted a flash process and went though a "freeze"?
I'm looking for a way to reset the phone to use only what was burnt into ROM from first delivery. I just can't accept that it is so easy to mess up a phone, and I doubt Samsung would be so crazy not to build it with a rescue kinda last savior. Am I totally naive? Is my baby dead? :'(
lol I hope for you that I'm wrong also!

Something similar had happened with me too. The phone was stuck b/w flashing with odin. And the startscreen was showing those 3 icons. It was soft bricked.
But I then finally fixed it by flashing CF and then a ROM

I'm really stuck here guys, and I seriously could use some help. I was messing around (yes, I know what I'm doing) I installed Bionix's Rom and I liked VooDoo but not the Rom. So I thought, I could just flash the kernel with stock JI6. I was wrong because I couldn't find anything on the post stating it didn't work or I would need a certain file (which I did, and have now) So the phone was going through the Voodoo robot girl steps and then just stood on the Vibrant logo. I took the battery out and went into download mode. Tried to restore back to JI6 on odin but it failed then the phone wasn't recognized. Rebooted again and now I have some weird error, it's a phone with a exclamation mark in the middle and a pc next to it. Any ideas? I've seriously searched and haven't found anything. Getting a little panicky :-|
Edit -- Forget it guys! Thankfully I was able to get back to download mode and it's working again :-D
Edit 2 -- I spoke to soon. I'm having another issue now. I use Odin to get it back to stock JI6 it passes and the phone boots up, show the T-Mobile logo then just goes black like if it died but it isn't dead. I don't know what to do :-( I used Odin 3 times already and it's the same thing.
Great !
All the best then..

Try to boot into stock recovery select wipe all user data. This should take your phone back to factory mode. Else there are plenty of links, that will tell you how to go back to stock using ODIN. Go back to stock using ODIN, then upgrade to JI6 using ODIN. Hope this helps.

I was able to fix it. Only took me 3 hours LOL. I kept going back to stock with Odin. Then I used Odin 1.0 to flash Froyo that doesn't brick because 1.30 kept failing then it gave me some error e:\ something so I flashed stock JI6 with Odin 1.30 and got the same error. Wiped user data and cache, rebooted and it worked. Never want to go through that again!
Edit -- Forgot to mention I flashed JFD then went JI6. I believe... LOL it was late and I didnt sleep all day but couldnt sleep until I fixed it. I used JFD, JI2, JI6, Froyo that doesnt brick through out the whole 3 hour process.

What I used that always worked for me was pull out the battery. Leave the phone alone for 15 seconds then plug the USB in, hold both volume buttons and put the battery in. Should go into download mode immediately.

I am stuck on the "phone with a exclamation mark in the middle and a pc next to it" screen, I cant get my computer to recognize the phone anymore, and I cant get the phone to go to download mode anymore, PLEASE HELP ...
I was in the process of putting the stock version again on the phone after my phone started to freeze up on the Vibrant screen after the voodoo update
If your phone isnt hardware locked. Just hold down the volume keys and power button at the same time (with USB in) wait until the phone pc exclamation mark screen is gone and let go of the power button. Worked for me all the time.

I had the same issue. I'm not sure why it happens either. What I did was install Froyo that doesn't brick and flash that using Odin then I got an error on that. So I went back into download mode and flashed stock JFD and click repartition. It have me an error again and I wiped user data and cache then clicked reboot and it worked for me. Both those files can be found in the Development section. If you can't get it to work just keep trying man, flashing back and fourth until it works because like I said I did exactly that and it took me 3 hours to fix on my own. It's a real *****.

What ROM do you get that error on? If it's the Froyo that doesn't brick just install JFD over it by pulling out the battery, waiting 15 secs then put the USB on, hold volume buttons and put battery on. Should get you into download mode. If its the stock JFD or JI just go down to clear user data, then clear cache and then click reboot. You should see those options in the recovery.

Hello again fellas, I'm hoping someone helps me out of a bind I'm currently in. I just flashed JFD, but the phone is stuck in a boot loop. Here are the symptoms:
After Odin3 shows PASS:
1) Phone turns off, but instead of rebooting, shows transparent battery icon with spinning splash, blank screen, transparent battery icon with spinning splash.
2) If I disconnect from the PC, then turn on, the phone shows a WHITE screen, then the VIBRANT screen with Samsung at the bottom, then white screen, and back to the Vibrant screen.
I have obtained the same results wether "Re-Partition" was clicked or not. I am in the process of d/l AIO Vibrant Toolbox from Bay-Wolf. In the meantime, if anybody has any ideas, I'm all ears (eyes in this case). Thanks.
Did you put the proper pit and tar files in their place? Just try to flash again, you might have just had a bad flash.
Hey, thanks for the reply. After reading your reply, I checked the .pit and .tar files but it checks out.
I have also tried using AIO toolbox and used the files provided by the program but I get the same results. The odd thing is that Odin shows pass. Could it be bootloaders? I know those are sometimes an issue with Captivates, but I don't know about Vibrants.
I have a similar problem, haven't been able to solve it but try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8698655&postcount=150
Hope it helps.
Just to be sure...can you try with the files available on this post, following the provided steps:

Look fellas this has been said hundreds of times around here.
When you flash JFD, untick reboot, when using Odin, because then it gives you a chance to do the data wipe and then the cache wipe, this has been the main culprit in almost all boot looping. and do the same with other roms as well, people just immediately reboot after a successful load, and forget to wipe this data factory reset and cache, clearing this out allows no other ghost data from previous install and the present loaders to interfere with the first time boot up, I used to make this mistake, but since doing this it stopped the boot looping.
I want to thank you guys for replying and trying to help. I will look into the links provided above, and see what I can do. I apologize if I have asked a question that has already been covered here. I'm a frequent visitor to the Captivate forums, and I'm aware what's expected of every member before they ask aquestion. However, I am doing this as a favor to friend, and I'm not familiar with the nuances of flashing a Vibrant back to stock. I also didn't have the time to peruse the forums untill I came across a solution. Thanks for all the help, and I'll update you soon on my progress.

Can you clarify what you mean be "it gives you a chance to do the data wipe..."?
I tried Odin and unticked reboot and then after Odin says successful, nothing happens. There is no window that pops up on the computer or the phone that gives the option to do a data wipe.
I know there's a data wipe and cache wipe option in CWM, but I can't get into CWM or any sort of recovery mode right now...
you're clarification would be greatly appreciated so that I can get out of this bootloop nightmare
So....

Did this get resolved? I am in the same boat working on a friend's phone. Have never had an issue with Odin that I couldn't figure out. But now I'm four days in and about to pull my hair out so the magic fix would be greatly reassuring right now! Help.
You need to enter recovery mode and do data wipe. If it still don't work, try another Odin image.
My phone was running at about 60% battery last night, and working fine. It was in my pocket and it vibrated. I was unable to turn it on or reboot it, even after removing the battery. I tried using the battery from my wife's S2 but still no luck. I tried connecting the power supply but it still wouldn't boot so I left it charging overnight.
This morning it alternately flashed a fully green battery and a fully black battery. If I press and hold the power button it starts the boot process - I get past the Samsung splash screen and see the first "Resurrection Remix" splash screen, but then it reverts to displaying the green battery.
Any ideas for how I can revive the phone??

Ok We cant say its bricked!! Because its booting up but not coming to homescreen rite? Are u able to get into recovery or download mode?? If ur able o then wipe the data cache and dalvik cache, reinstall the ROM again.. If Recovery doesnt shw up.. Then Use ODIN to flash original fw!! Even if u still couldn get it.. Order a USB JIG from Ebay and try getting into DOWNLOAD MODE!! Even after this its still working means ITS BRICKED !!
Start download mode and the flash a new stock firmware . And your phone isnt bricked .!
This is why I always make a backup.
If you can get into download mode you can fix it, if you can't it's a service centre job. Pretty simple really.
Try cleaning charging port..

Any ideas???
Yes stop messing
1: If you dint have to save anything, wipe better to full wipe
Flash a stock Rom using Odin, than start again with custom roms.
OR
2: download your custom Rom again and flash, might be corrupt download.

So it's OK to interrupt this ROM flash, even though it's stuck at 50%? Should I just hold the power button or remove the battery??
pull the battery
But I say flash stock Rom first, lengthy procedure I know, but safer
OK I decided to reflash RR 2.3, which had been running fine for a couple of weeks previously. Immediately after flashing (which worked OK) the boot process wouldn't complete - it got as far as the RR splash screen then died (screen blank, and needed a long press on the power button to restart).
This happened several times. Eventually I removed and replaced the battery and it finally booted.
Does this sound like a hardware problem? I've noticed that the phone often runs quite warm, but I don't know if that's normal.
You have to flash stock rom, only way to know if there is something wrong with your phone, run it for couple days.
Now to the heat issue, it is due to
1: modem
2: kernel
3: both
Hello,
I have a S3 which is stuck in a bootloop at the samsung logo.
when i turn it on it shows the logo for some seconds then the screen goes black and the logo re-appears.
i can not boot into recovery mode, but download mode is working without a problem every time.
i tried flashing stock firmwares with odin and also tried kies emergency firmware recovery. the flashing always went without any problem, but it had effect. whatever i try, i am never able to boot into recovery and still stuck in the bootloop.
in some tries after flashing the screen just shows the samsung logo forever, but after rebooting it once it then is stuck in a bootloop again (shows the logo - screen goes black - shows the logo...)
i also tried flashing TWRP and CWM via odin, but again i can never boot into recovery mode.
what should i try next?
thx alot for any helpful comment

You can Try this:
1.) Pull out battery
2.) Put it in again
3.) Press Vol up + home + power
4.) When the Samsung Logo appears let it off

i really tried everything, it's not working. btw with i am stuck at the very first image, where it says "samsung Galaxy sII GT-I9300".
i dont think it's just the way i press the buttons because i can reach it on my s1 and s2 without a problem, it's just not working on this device.
could some setting like "nand erase all" in odin help? in other threads there is sometimes mentioned that the internal file system might be screwed up and in those cases a simple odin reflash does not help anymore...
Nand erase will usually hard brick it. Try the rescue firmware from general forum, sticky thread. Follow the guide exactly as it includes a pit file.

thx, but i already did that (multiple times) and flashing via odin always succeeds. then the phone reboots and is stuck at the first samsung galaxy s.. screen. twice i managed somehow to get into recovery (after flashing cwm6) but it then randomly rebooted.
and i dont think that the power button is stuck because when i am in download mode it is perfectly fine it never reboots itself unexpectedly.
Had a similar issue on my tab2 p3100. It all happened when I tried flashing a custom recovery from rom manager.
A bad flash of anything related to recovery or bootloader could be a probable cause.
I remember a knowledge share on one of the threads describing this issue and as mentioned on it all I had to do is this:
1) switch off the device and plug in the charger. This would light up the display showing you the charging status. The status has to show if at least your bootloader part of the phone is fine.
2) plug out the charger and immediately press the three buttons (home + vol up + power) get into recovery mode. This step has to work and help you get to recovery mode.
***Note : the interval within which this step has to be performed is too short since the display would turn off immediately as soon as you plug out the charger. A bit tricky too so you have to be fast. If this misses getting you into recovery, pull out the battery and put it back again. Repeat step1 and 2 again.
3) upon successfully getting into recovery, perform wipe data, cache and select reboot phone from option available on recovery again.
Allow the device to boot. This could take a while since you have performed a data wipe and may prompt for first time set up.
I was able to restore functionality on my tab after these steps and like ppl learn from their mistakes, I then learnt that recoveries and bootloaders are things that needs to be done with a pc only.
Worth a try if you have tried other alternatives and found no go. may help. Who knows..
all the best.
thats also not working. i tried to get into recovery since two days now...
i also tried the steps from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/solved-pit-bricked-dead-problem-gt-t2535367
but again, after i flash the cf-root (successfully) the phone does neither boot into recovery by itself nor can i do it by hand...
its crazy... in download mode i can see the model number (GT-I9300) and i thought as long as the model number is there and i can enter download mode there should be a way to recover the device.
but i cannot think of anything to try that i have not done yet

Same here, still didn't found how to fix it.. I guess our motherboard just died..
Howewer I have a solution that "almost" worked for me.
Get a stock firmware in odin and turn on Nand erase and T-flash
When it's done phone reboots and you'll see just "Downloading..." mode when you turn it on.
Then got to Kies and Select firmware recovery...
Enter s/n and model name and wait for the flash to complete.
With it , I got past boot logo and actually booted into android but the phone crashed because I guess I have a memory issue..
Well , gl. If you don't find anything else helpful , try going with this method..
Hello
My situation goes as follows: I'm on a Cyanogenmod 11 nightly, as I flash a new ROM from time to time. So I know how to get into recovery and that kind of things. I've installed TWRP recovery, instead of the CWM one. I'm on a mac by the way.
As I was a little bit fast, I accidentally rebooted into download mode instead of recovery. Now my phone remains that way, only without the info in the top left (normally it says ODIN Mode and four other lines of information).
I tried to get the battery out and to drain the battery, both gave the same result: it booted in "downloading... do not turn off target !!"
I tried ODIN, Kies, Heimdall and adb trough terminal, and even the CM installer; none of these things seemed to recognize my phone.
I've been googling for over two hours now and I'm getting desperate. Is my phone ready for the bricks? I can't go to a shop tomorrow as it is the national holiday in Belgium. So still 32 hours of trying ahead of me...
Any ideas? If you guys have any additional questions, please ask.
Thanks in advance

Have you tried the hard rester method?
Whilst in download mode hold power button for about 1 minute until it vibrates? Maybe your buttons are stuck.

Hard reset as in tried to flash trough Kies, I can't do anything else, right?
I tried the pwoer button, but it just loops in download mode, without the information on the top left.
I do get it into download mode WITH the information, but than Kies simply says there's no phone attached.

Are you familiar with the PC flashing tool Odin? It's specifically for Samsung devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539
Download and install Odin onto your PC it will flash a stock image onto your device (No root, Stock recovery)
http://www.sammobile.com
Head to Sammobile and download your ROM firmware specific to your device.
Run ODIN on your computer and connect your phone.
When it recognizes it, check "Auto Reboot" and "F.Reset Time".
Everything else should be left unchecked.
On your computer, unzip the ROM file you downloaded. It should give you something with the extension of
.tar.md5
Press "PDA" on ODIN and select this file.
Everything should be as shown here: http://gyazo.com/fea7a1c8b7a7b5bb287fb0a0c70056dc
Click Start and wait for it to do it's thing. It'll take quite a few minutes.
When it's finished, you're done.
If it hangs on boot ones it flashed, reboot to Stock Recovery and do a factory reset it should boot up fine now, (also 1st boot takes about 3 minutes.)
Let me know how it goes
