Being an iPhone 3G and then 4 user for over 3 years, I decided to switch to android. First bought an HTC incredible S because the Atrix wasn't unlocked back then yet.
The HTC was nice but it was kinda awkward to hold in the hand, having a thinner body all around.
Now I got the atrix and its pretty awesome.
I got a Bell Atrix, unlocked it, and installed the latest cherrypi 0.7 on it. I also carrier unlocked it to use it on fido network. There are a couple of issues:
1) I didn't setup motoblur when I first booted cherrypi, or was there the option? I forgot already. But now, when I go to accounts and tap on the facebook icon to set it up nothing happens. I wanted to setup facebook in order to get it sync with my contacts so I can get the pictures onto my contacts. Is this right? HTC sense seems to work flawlessly in this regard. I remember with bell stock rom 2.2.2 I did setup motoblur and the contacts did show their facebook displays. Should I reflash cherrypi and setup blur? I dont see any way of setting up now.
2) I tried to use the mobile hotspot, everything seems fine, but when my laptop or iphone 4 connects to it, there's still no internet. Connection seems fine and it gets the IP too, but nothing works...
3) The wireless settings section seems to be missing a lot of options... such as enable/disable data, data roaming etc.... using a toggle widget for data works, but how come the option is not in settings?
4) I purchased extended controls widget, and it seems that the flash button is not working on my atrix? it used to work fine on the incredible s. Droidlight seems to work though...
5) Sometimes when I reboot I get greeted with a bunch of "problem loading widget". This is really annoying coz I have to delete them and put add the widgets all over again. This happened with the inc S too when I modded/played with the rom too much and got it fixed when i did a full wipe and rom flash again. I'm tempted to do this now with the atrix, see if it fixes some issues.
6) Is it possible to add android native support for more languages? I have searched a bit and it seems that ppl say "cyanogen" or "more locale" more locale useless for me, coz you dont get the keyboard... ( i want traditional chinese inputs ) and cyanogen for the atrix is not stable yet right? Can't we just just for example extract the languages from lets say a taiwanese atrix rom or an HTC rom and add it into the current rom? I could just use the chinese input in the market... but it's not ideal... also, i wonder if it's possible to get speech recognition for chinese language and not just english?
ok this is getting too long, I will leave it at that for now..
It'd be great of anyone could give me some insight into these problems... I'm fairly new to android... sorry if some of the questions have been answered... but I have tried searching already. Could these be a bell atrix problem only? I just wish bell could release an official GB update already... Threads specific to bell atrix is fairly limited here too.
million thanks in advance!
1) I haven't tried cherrypi, but could it be one of those ROMs where an attempt has been made to strip out Motoblur, so Motoblur doesn't work on that ROM?
2) I don't know, but I know it works on stock 2.2.2 and the leaked Bell 2.3.4 because I've used it with my laptop.
3) Data roaming and stuff like that are under Settings > Wireless Networks > Mobile Networks ... At least on the stock ROMs.
4) - 6) I don't know about these.
Since it's so easy to flash ROMs with clockwork mod, why don't you go back to 2.2.2 or 2.3.4 and verify that all your accounts are setup properly? Also check your tethering at that time and other settings. If Motoblur is setup properly once, when you sign into Motoblur from any ROM the next time all your accounts will carry over.
thanks for the reply.
blur works on that rom, it's just that i didn't set it up at the beginning.
Actually, I just did a wipe and installed cherrypi again and this time i did setup motoblur, so i have the facebook account setup in there now. I do get facebook profile pictures now, but it doesn't seem to be consistent. depending on which widget i use, sometimes facebook profile pics are not used for contact displays. It seems that android contact list is kinda messed up. Is there anyway to actually force the sync and merge of all the contacts from different networks and put them up on google contacts? and what is the difference between "favorites" and "android starred"?
@maledyris how's the leaked bell 2.3.4? how's the battery life? any issues? I did see a post somewhere saying it wasn't good. no specifics...
As for roaming settings, I found it hidden under "battery and data management"???? lol...
After re-flashing cherrypi i found a strange behaviour of the battery.
I did a battery calibration before flashing and it showed around 4200 mAh in battery calibration app... then i did the flash of cherrypi when my battery was around 50%...
After booting up again... the indicator showed 80%!!... went to battery calibration app and it showed 3730mAh..... so then I kept using and reinstalling apps... and started charging again at 40%... when it reached 100% the battery calibration app showed 4170mAh!! What's going on?
If you're happy with cherry at the moment, I would stick with that, or try something else. The leaked Bell 2.3.4 is still kind of buggy.
Battery life is better than the leaked French Orange 2.3.4. Sometimes I get good battery, other times, not so good... I didn't fully track down what was causing it.
WebTop was broken. Plugging the device into USB or unplugging it may cause a random reboot. My phone froze and reboot occasionally when using the YouTube app. On some occasions at night when I wasn't using the phone (ie. it was on a table or something) I would notice it rebooting. It's pretty unstable at the moment.
That battery calibration issue where battery goes up after a reboot, that's a known bug in these 2.3.4 based ROMs, but I believe there is a fix for that. I never tried it though. Search for battery fix, it should be on one of the first few pages of the dev forum.
Oh, almost forgot, that Facebook profile picture stuff you were talking about. Look for Photo Unlocker by ChainsDD. Basically this unlocks profile pictures that have been marked as restricted for use by third party apps. Not sure about the merging of contacts thing... Don't they merge in the contacts on your phone already? I see some Google+ and my normal contacts in my Android contacts so I know it's at least merging those...
oops, i just noticed that the batterycalibration apps displays mV not mAh... so not the capacity.... so the max mV is 4200 is seems.
I'm gonna try the ninja rom just to see.
They seems to be merged on the phone, it's just that not all the contact widgets access the contacts the same way I guess.. so on some of them, it doesnt show... like on the LP people widget.
I did another reboot on the newly flashed cherrypi and again... my widgets failed to load except LP widgets... anyone knows what causes widgets not to load?
I also installed GO Launcher EX and played with switching launchers with Home Switcher... but everytime i press on "set default" in there it just crashes Home Switcher.
I will try the photo unlocker like you said and see. EDIT: photo unlocker did the trick!! thanks man!

In the stock bell ROM, you can disable data in Settings -> Data Manager -> Data Delivery. Same for roaming/background data. I can also see disabling the data roaming option in Settings -> Wireless & network settings -> Mobile Networks.

I think the issue is called "data drop"? Anyways, although I am currently running Axura 2.0.3, it doesn't seem to matter, all 2.2's seem to do it. There will come a point in the day when I try to open something web-based, the 3G activity on the notification bar just does nothing. I suppose rebooting solves it for a while, but going to settings>wireless & network>mobile networks>network operators>search now and then re-choosing T Mobile somehow resets it as well.
-Can somebody explain what the bigger issue is here (why it does this on 2.2)? -Is there some type of a "fix" out there, or one contemplated?
-If there isn't, is there a better way to re-set the data than either of the 2 things above? If re-registering solves it, how does it get un-registered in the first place?
-On 2.1 ROMS (and even stock) I was routinely getting data speeds of between 4-5M. On 2.2 it's hardly ever more than 3. Is this something inherent in 2.2? Seems like we went backwards a bit???
Hmm, I haven't seen it yet. I did experience Airplane mode once on one of the earlier Onyx releases, and the only thing that solved it was to reboot the device.
I have experienced a strange issue with the browsers though, I will get a notification that internet connection is required, but the page loads, I even tried to download and install an alternative browser, and got the same annoying pop-up, mind you I was on 3G, and also used the market to download the app to install it at the same time in the same location.

That also happened to me yesterday. The pages in the browser does load but it's annoying that a pop up message will always appear when using the browser. I'm using Froyo now for almost a week and it happened the first time yesterday. Then i reboot then it's fixed.
I am getting a lot of disconnects too. But it also happens when I am on wifi, sometimes wifi refuses to start and errors out. Onyx 3.1.
Just happened trying to post this - wifi.

Did your area recently have 4G go live? I've had data problems on both mine using froyo and my girlfriends running stock ji6. So I don't feel the froyo roms are the cause. Last night neither of us could get data to work for more than a few minutes at a time.

I too have noticed this on all the 2.2 roms. What I see is the up/green arrow on the 3G icon light up but not the down/orange arrow. I'll try loading stuff up on the web/market and nothing but all the while that green arrow is lighting up. I'm guessing green = upload and orange = download? Idk, but its annoying as hell.

I just came back to the office and was able to use it without the annoying pop-up.
It is strange, the page loads in the background while the pop-up comes up.
Ahhh, the Froyo gooodies LOL

Not yet. Philly always gets hit up last. I did some more searching and found this in the early part of the Axura thread:
"The Lib & Bin fixes are for the battery.
I haven't had any problem.
It seems to be a hit & miss type of thing.
He told me That is was probably the same issue that was causing his network location to not work, and that he fixed in with the lib and bins. Just waiting on a release. Everything else seems great in this rom. Runs much smoother that the JPM build."
I have no idea what this means or if it's relevant, but there's something ain't right...
Running Axura. Since 2.2 does not see the hsdpa, I loaded the ji6 modem and all is working great. No data issues at all.

No update on this thread. Anyone got a fix?
I am experiencing the same problem with all the 2.2 ROMs, currently on bionix-v 1.2.1 with KB1 modem.
When it is in the "data drop" condition, sometimes voice calls would not connect and SMS fails to send. But signal status still showing full bars (I live next to the tower).
I'm on an UMTS/HSPA network, so it does look to be a ROM rather than a radio problem. I've tried almost all the available modems - same problem. Yes, I use my phone heavily so there is always one or two apps trying to access the network - and they would be all be stuck (or errors) at the same time.
If I'm tethered, either via 2.2 AP Mode or USB tether, the session is stuck until reset/reboot.
However, the free "WiFi Tether for rooted users" app from the market gets around this condition all the time... somehow :
Okay, my phone is on the 2.3.4 OTA update it is also rooted and unlocked ... have recently wiped it clean to try to track down the issue ...
since updating it ... now when i go to the marketplace it will 'hang' and not download anything for a bit ... the H+ icon on the top is in black letters ... after a while the icon will update and show the H+ in blue and the arrows start to light up and the download will finally start ...
if i connect it to wifi it works just fine
i notice if i let the phone sleep for a legnth of time it will do this over again, but if i keep it 'awake' it continues to work as normal...
is there a setting someplace that i am overlooking that allows you to suspend cellular data while sleeping ?
It seems similar to what a lot of us OTA-ers are experiencing. Definitely wondering about this as well.

ok so it is not just me .... searched on the forum for a bit and did not find a post about it.
Is it only when you go to the Market?
Are you using the new Market app? (New Market app can cause data to drop).
More info please.
when i first applied the OTA it had the old market but was doing this ... (i did a reset because of it and the fingerprint scanner not working) ... after the reset the first time i went to the market it downloaded the new version and worked for a bit ... but now it is back to making the H+ turn black which i am guessing is showing that there is no data ??? because nothing else will work for a bit after that happens ...
oh, and the fingerprint scanner still doesn't work but thats another issue i need to figure out.
Make sure that your phone is logged into Google Talk by following these steps:
Go to your phone’s app launcher, and press the Talk app
If you’re already logged into Talk, press Menu, and then touch Sign out
Launch Talk again to sign in
Check the markets support page, its under known issues, had the same problem and it worked for me
Whenever I toggle 2G thru notification power widget, and reboot... I get an endless loop of force closes of com.google.phone or something. I have to factory reset to untoggle that... Sorry pretty new to this CM7 stuff. Is it because of the new market?

I don't think the Atrix is capable of operating on 2g only. I have been trying to find a way to do this since day 1. I believe it has more to do with AT&T's network. If you go to settings>wireless and networks there's the option to enable 2g only but it won't "stick" meaning if you back out of the menu and go back the box will be unchecked. I had the same issue with the Alien ROM and well as stock trying the *#*#4636#*# method, all to no avail. So I have simply given up on it. I'm already getting fantastic battery life with CM7 and that's the only reason I wanted to do it in the first place.
Hey guys
I just installed the leaked AT&T ICS (the CWM version that's been posted), and so far everything's generally great.
However, ever since I upgraded to ICS, my phone has been downloading data like crazy over WiFi. Oddly enough, this has happened on my phone before as well when I was using GB, and I believe it also occurred then right after a reinstall.
It's incredibly annoying because whatever the phone's downloading, it seems like it's using a lot of bandwidth because any other internet-related activities I try and do take *forever*. I've rebooted the phone several times, tried stopping every service that I can, and turned off all auto account sync stuff. It's been several hours since I installed ICS, and it's still going.
I'm going to let it sit overnight and see what it's doing in the morning, but even if this is only a temporary problem it's REALLY annoying. Especially since if it's not done doing whatever it's doing by morning, I won't be able to use cellular data on it because I only have the 200 MB plan and don't feel like losing my entire volume for the month because I can't stop my phone from downloading.
Any ideas as to what's causing this? Like I said I'm pretty sure this isn't an ICS-specific problem because it happened under 2.3.4 also, I just want to be able to shut down whatever's doing this excessive downloading. And I'd love to know *what* exactly is being downloaded that's it's taking so long and using so much bandwidth.
Thanks for any help you guys can lend
If you do switch to data to let it pull it down, you can use the data usage in the settings to see what app is doing it. My Data Manager (free in the Play Store) can also monitor data, on cell data and wifi. That would also tell you what app is doing it.
I would guess you either have a ton of data in your Google account, such as contacts, calendar, Gmail, or you have an app that is trying to sync data down. I'm guessing you are restoring apps, then notice the data draw. Think about any apps you have that may sync data back and forth. If you sign into your Google account at initial set up, it should (depending on settings) automatically download and install your apps. But, that should be apparent, you should see the downloads as it does them app by app.
All that is based on guesses of what I would consider "normal" behavior after installing a new ROM.
Good luck tracking it down.

Or avoid all that and use the native ICS data monitor.
The weird thing is that I hadn't really done anything to the phone when it started using all the data. My Google account doesn't really have much in it (don't have a ton of contacts, don't use it to back up apps/etc.), and I think the only things I'd done app-wise were updating a couple preinstalled apps (Facebook and Maps, I think), but I hadn't installed anything new yet.
I installed My Data Manager, but it looks like it's already done whatever it was doing. Though, even now the download arrow is constantly lit up on WiFi, but I think whatever it's doing now has something to do with the network I'm on (dorm room) as I've noticed almost constant non-zero download bandwidth being used on my desktop as well when it's on the network. If I turn WiFi off now it isn't constantly using cellular data any more, so thankfully it looks like it's finished with whatever it was doing and the constant WiFi downloading is a network, not phone, issue.
On an unrelated note, I was going to reinstall a tethering app, but figured I'd give a try to the built-in tethering first (don't have a plan). On GB it wouldn't even let me start up the tethering without a plan IIRC, but under ICS the tethering not only starts up, I can even connect my laptop to it. Unfortunately I couldn't get internet access on my laptop though, so I'm guessing there's still a restriction on it. Just found it interesting that you can actually enable the tethering without a plan now.
But there's a more serious problem, however. Is ATT clamping down on third-party tethering? I used to use Barnacle WiFi Tether, so I went to install that from the market. Well, Play tells me the app isn't able to be installed on my device because of carrier restrictions (lame). No problem, I figure, I go to their website and download the apk from there and manually install.
Well, when I try and start tethering using Barnacle, it says "WiFi: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0: Operation not supported on transport endpoint"
Does this mean I'm screwed? Will any third-party tethering apps work? To be honest I'm not really into trying out 5 million different ROMs on my phone and don't really mind TW at all, so I'd prefer to keep it stock. But I use my phone overseas and need to be able to use tethering, and if ATT is really clamping down on third-party apps then I'll be installing a completely stock kernel once one's easily available.
Thoughts? Anyone else experimented with tethering on UCLC2 yet?
Well, never mind regarding the tethering stuff - I'd still be interested anyway to know if ATT is trying to actively prevent you from using it in ICS, but I just flashed the SHOstock2 ROM and I gotta say I'm blown away. Even after using it for a half hour I'm pretty sure I'll never go back to stock again (I'm sure most of you would say DUH to that), has everything I'd want in a ROM and nothing I don't. Default tethering works right out of the box too, so I don't even have to worry about installing another app.
Only kinda weird thing is the data indicator keeps switching between H+ and 3G (I'd post on the actual ROM thread but I don't have 10 posts yet...). I'm only on the 200 MB data plan so I switched it to the wap.cingular APN, but even after doing that it still switches. Data seems fast - and I'm not one to be super-concerned with data speeds since I'm mostly just checking e-mail - so it's not a huge deal, but figured I'd mention it anyway.

The data switching is normal. The device idles on 3g to save battery and kicks up to 4g when it needs the speed. Stock roms hide this behavior by showing the 4g icon even on 3g

I never thought to press the menu key in there, there is no indication there are more options. By default it doesn't show wifi data, but on my TouchPad running CM9, that's all it shows. Guess I shouldn't have assumed the ICS wouldn't be without menu use fragmentation like every other android version.
Yeah, the data switching on a custom ROM is normal. Just showing you what the phone actually does. It can save power by reverting back to the 3G vs H when you are idle. The first thing most custom ROMs add is tethering on the built in method. If the leak let you start it up, I'm guessing its incomplete. I would bet att does the same in ICS as GB and has an app to check your account before letting you turn on tethering. Att can detect tethering on the back end too, so if you are caught they warn you first, but you can end up being put on the tethering plan if you keep tethering.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Ahh, thanks for the info on the data switching, never knew about that!
I don't use tethering in the US, but I do overseas, which is why I was concerned about ATT blocking tethering apps. However, I realized it's probably not an issue anyway because I'm guessing that tethering wouldn't be blocked with a non-ATT SIM card. Anyway, SHOstock rocks, so it's all good
Also good to know that ICS can monitor WiFi traffic by default - didn't think to hit the settings button on that screen. I gotta admit, that's one huge interface design flaw of Android. There should be some kind of indicator on the screen when there's a menu available, really poor interface design choice to have to hit the menu button randomly to see if any menus are there.

With new ICS developed devices, most don't include touch buttons... The Nexus for example (using on screen buttons) only shows a menu button when a menu is available...
Cheers.
ALSO- I also noticed what appears to be constant "spurts" of Wifi data usage as well (at least according to my Wifi status bar indicator)... It doesn't seem to affect my Mobile Data, and every data monitoring App (including stock ICS data monitoring) doesn't show the culprit, which leads me to believe that we may be dealing with a system app that is accessing data in the background almost constantly... But only on Wifi. Maybe a location service, or something to do with Syncing? I say system because not even stock Data Monitoring is recognizing an app using data...
Another reason I say this is because I pointlessly wiped my device and started over due to this... "bug"... Only to find that running stock CM9 (with no installed apps) my Wifi indicator still led me to believe my device as downloading spurts of data constantly.
I haven't been able to narrow it down, and am hoping that the issue is fixed in a future software update. - But it is more than likely not an app, just an ICS/CM9 bug.
UPDATE- Just checked a Samsung Epic 4G running CM9 and the bug isn't there... So, it's something specifically within our device and ICS... Again, maybe a System app or Kernel bug...
You needn't read this thread. There is nothing of any import here.
I was unable to learn how to delete it, or I would have.
As I mentioned below, I manually updated this phone to Nougat using the LG Bridge program. It complicates matters that I can't remember the exact time-frame for issues. I do remember getting real-time traffic updates using google maps even after I upgraded to Android 7. And I did stream Netflix once while on a 12 hour roadtrip, but I can't remember if that was before or after the road-trip. I have found and tried many APN's for the H2O service. Some are supposedly specifically for the G5, others just for mms or internet. Most recently, I did a factory reset after backing up my personal data and media. Twice now actually. The first time, I ran the backup software soon after resetting and when things hadn't changed, I surmised that maybe I was just importing the problem back onto the phone in my settings or something, so I reset again and this time only chose two of the settings categories near the top of the list since they seemed separate to the navigation programming.
I'm going to reset again now and see if the maps work with a stock setup, then see if I can slowly add things one at a time and continually monitor the data functionality.
If a moderator sees this and can delete this post, I would appreciate it since it doesn't seem like it could be helpful to anyone else the way it is. If I am successful in getting the data working and this thread still remains, I will post the process I had followed to achieve that in an "Issue Solved" heading at the bottom. Everything between the snowflakes (*****) is the older post and edits.
*****
History of Issue(s):
>This is my first smartphone and my first Android device
> Bought phone used off swappa running MM 6.?
>Have owned phone for around 8 months
>Volume down button wasn't working, figured I could live with pressing vol up and moving it down manually.
> Thought it would be good idea to upgrade manually to Nougat (10h update) Using LG bridge (about 5 months ago?)
> My carrier is H2Owireless, an AT&T MVNO
> Used to have internet, google maps real-time traffic used to work, Netfilx used to work (both without WiFi).
> Could make calls, send texts, listen to Pandora or Spotify and use my Maps for commuting to work.
> Couldn't send MMS pic msgs.
> Began to learn about APN's and what the different network settings did.
>Tried many APN's and fotzed around with Global, LTE/CDMA, LTE/GSM/UMTS and the submode settings
>Can get 4G and LTE , often have to switch back to Global setting to send SMS/MMS
> Had H2O set up APN as best they knew and network settings to what they felt would work best
> Can do anything and evrything when Wifi is enabled (that's never been an issue)
> I thought phone had bricked about 2 months ago while on a roadtrip.
> Discovered on forum that I could swap cam plus for chin and power on that way.
> Turned out power button was no longer functional
> Learned about vol up + charger to power on phone (use an app to power off and restart phone)
> took off cam plus so I could have phone in case.
And now, I'm standing at the edge of a very deep rabbit hole with a phone that can't use mobile data for most internet access (spotify works, Pandora never worked very well). I've discovered that the version of Nougat I'm running is problematic (update 10h Brightpoint) and that my forcing the update to Nougat might be largely responsible for these issues.
I see myself having a choice between learning how to flash the phone back to Marshmallow, or learning how to flash it up to update 21c... or live without mobile data for most of the functionality I wanted from the phone...
I seek advice from the the forum for which of these options people think I might best choose. Do I need to acquaint myself with these programs used to flash the ROM? Does it seem to you readers that my problems are symptomatic of those which are best rectified by flashing up? Or rolling back to Marshmallow...
I just want to be able to google something while I'm away from wifi.. to get traffic updates while I'm using the navigation.. to listen to spotify.. maybe even watch something on netflix... (calling, SMS and MMS functionality is a given, but I do still have them for the most part).
I can pick things up if I read tutorials / guides... I've flashed PC BIOS before... I could figure it out if I needed to...
But maybe I just need a new chin or clean it? Maybe I should factory reset? Maybe there's other potential causes I'm unaware of?
Any and all suggestions are welcome. It's late here and I won't be reading any responses until tomorrow at work.
Thanking you very much in advance. --Wayne
Edit: I was about to check LG Bridge to see if there was an update available for nougat.. thought I would get this out there first since I was pretty sure I wouldn't get both done tonight..
3rd edit: I checked for LG update, nothing available. I finally decided to factory reset before getting into flashing. That seemed to fix the google maps issue as it seemed to be working without WiFi enabled (I say 'seemed' because my office is slightly below grade and getting a good signal is tough. If it's not working, the address remains grayed out and the connection just buffers, the address filled in after the reset. Then I decided to move some of the things I had backed up from the SD card but neglected to deselect the settings box. After restoring much of what I had backed up, It seemed more like how it had been before the reset. I noticed a small icon next to the signal type and strength meter at the top which hadn't been there before the reset (a small white square with rounded edges that has a zig-zag line going through it that kind of looks like a jagged "N"). Instead of saying offline, the app says poor connection, so I will test it on my way home.. I am hopeful. It seems promising. If I have to reset again, I will deselect settings and set things up fresh; I think that will help. I am beginning to think this isn't so much about my OS or any hardware failure as it is the H2O at&t mvno being throttled or something similar. Even when I'm getting 4 bars of 4G, the maps loads very slowly.. nothing at all like it does on WiFi.
I'll post a final edit after I try it out on the ride home this evening.
