just to clear things up before my 101 arrives in a few days : is the cinema plugin needed only for the mpeg2/ac3 5.1 combo or also for mpeg2 video in combination with some other type audio, and ac3 5.1 audio in combination with some other type video? in other words, is any of the two in a media file enough for the cinema plugin to be needed or do they both have to be present? h.264/ac3 5.1 combo works without the plugin? i guess not but i'd like to make certain...
thanks!

no.
thanks for the answer!
now, i have several video clips with h.264/ac3 5.1 in an mkv container. i'm trying to transcode these clips into mkvs or mp4s with the same video stream (so, video direct stream copy) and transcoded audio to either ac3 2.0 or aac that archos supports without the cinema plugin. none of the transcoders i tried seemed to be able to do this: mediacoder, super, handbrake (i'm not even sure if handbrake supports direct video stream copy, i wasn't able to find it) - they all failed. has anyone tried to do this and can recommend a good transcoder? i don't want to re-encode the video, just the audio stream.
thanks!
try vlc, ok it's a bit complicated but it definitly supports reuse of streams on the fly.
and do not reencode to ac3, afaik ac3 is completely depending on the cinema plugin
You can also use rock player free, although it leaves buttons on edge

yes, i read that everything above 540p is choppy without hw accel on a101.
i used a workaround that works but it's not ideal: i demuxed the ac3 5.1 audio stream from the mkv and re-encoded it into aac, then remuxed it back into the mkv. this works but it would be nice to have a one-step process to do this. i'm not sure what goes wrong with all the transcoders if you use direct video stram copying, i must be doing something wrong ... i'll be grateful if someone has any ideas. oh, and i haven't tried vlc yet - didn't even know it features transcoding, too...
thanks!
...or i'll just buy the freaking cinema plugin, it's only 15€ after all ... it's just that i like fooling around with free tools before i buy something which is not necessary and is something which should've come free with the product imo... oh, well
cheers
You got two options:
a) transcode all your movies/videos and spend couple of hours fooling around (how much $$$ is an hour? )
b) spend 15$ and be happy with the best video player available on archos' android devices
Okay, I have to ask. Can someone give a link to where you can buy the cinema pack? I've been trying to find it at store.archos.com or whatever and I can't find it. And yes...I feel pretty stupid about it since it seems everyone else knows where to buy it.

You have to put in your product key and it should give you the option for the plugin.
Don't feel stupid; the Archos site is awful and half the links don't work right. The above link that blazingwolf posted should work. Note that when you do successfully purchase the pack, you will get a download link presented on the web page - that one does NOT work, or at least it didn't for me... it kept saying invalid product ID.
I had to use the link in the email they sent out after the order was completed. That one downloaded fine.

Thanks Wolf! Or is it Blazing? Either way, thanks. I'm tempted to get it, but on the flip side I'm not sure if I will keep the 101 or upgrade to the Xoom WiFi only tablet. I don't really NEED more than the 101, but you know...in reality I probably didn't even NEED the 101 to begin with. I'm kind of rambling...so I'll post now and put down the keyboard...

Im taking a long flight soon, and will be bringing my TouchPad with me. I was wondering what the optimum setting was for converting video's to play on the TouchPad? What codex and resolution is best for good video? Also, what video player (I installed Kalem) and the name of a good conversion program ppl like to use. Thanks in advance!
Why convert? Kalem plays both those just fine.
If you want to convert though, I recommend Handbrake, and just using the iPad setting.
Tks. I have been doing video's on my HD2 (android) and you need to convert them in a VERY spacific way or it will play like crud. I know this HouchPad has quite a bit more power (OC'd to 1.7) but im just making sure. Converting movies can take a lot of time and I dont want to sit there and constantly convert one over and over to find the best settings.
If anyone can help me with this question I would greatly appreciate it. I am trying to figure out if I can install an odexed apk (blurCamera) into a deodexed rom (eclipse 1.1). The reason for this is because the only camera app that records video without freezing and lag is the stock blurCamera.apk from 2.3.4, but only the odexed version. So if I can install this apk into eclipse what permissions do I have to set for the odex file? Or if u know of a camera app that actually works that would be great too. Any help would be great. I have a 9 month old son that I want to take video of, but stock 2.3.4 just doesn't function near as good as eclipse, even with supercharger and speedy installed.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Have you tried the apk from the stock, deodexed zip put up by peperm1nt? It should work but it won't display the thumbnail preview at the lower right if you're using the aosp gallery.

Nope I didn't even see that one. I'll give it a shot though and see how that works. Thanks!
I have found that HD recording seems to always be jumpy for me.
using the DVD or VGA settings allow for smoother recordings
Well what us the point in having a phone that claims it can record in 720p hd when u have to set it to record in standard def just to get a decent quality video? If I knew how to adjust the bitrate it records in I think I could fix it, but that us way above me. I read in another post that the bitrate is too high.... Just an idea if anyone with some expertise on this wants to help me I will be glad to do anything I can. I do know some coding stuff, but I'm still a noob
I get no issues on 720p recordings with the stock camera. I get some tearing on playback on the phone periodically but when played back on a pc, etc it looks great.

Has anyone tried this yet? Does it improve the sound quality significantly?
Saw it, haven't tested it myself as I really don't care about audio quality! 192kbs mp3 format is good enough for my ears, lol!
I try it and it works pretty good... it sounds pretty good
I have this on my atrix its ok!

Tried it: fantastic sound!!!
Sweet thanks guys!
Seems the guy removed his thread, anyone still got the .zip and can put it up somewhere? cheers.
edit: other dev has it up on the forum it seems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525226
Hello, I have a weird problem that recently developed, and this is the only thing I can think of that could cause it. Many formats previously compatible now give me a "format not supported" when attwmping to play them in the stock media players. Some examples are mkv, avi, and even some wav! Has anyone else experienced this after appying this mod, or is it something else I've done?
UPDATE: YES! I uninstalled the beats mod, and confirm (for me anyway) that this does make some audio/video files incompatible with the stock players.
O I thought that had something to do with the files. I just switched to MX video player to solve the problem.
Another problem: this mod makes hardware video playback impossible even with the build.prop tweak to enable it.
I am wanting to rip some movies to watch on my tablet or color and am just wanting to know which video format and resolution I should convert them to. I have never done this so help will be appreciated! Thanks

He resolution will just fit your screen accordingly. 720p should work fine. On the succulant build of cm10+ I've seen you can use 1080p mp4 using handbreak 9.4 (I don't know what this is though.)
Pretty much, use whatever resolution you want. 720p should be good though.

Thanks! I am using ojosoft to ripp to a format and it has like a whole bunch of different formats and different resolutions as subcategories(as seen in the attached captures) and this is only about a 3rd of the resolutions available. It is kinda cornfusing for someone who is just starting to do this kindas stuff.

I see what you're doing now. AVI HD Video 720p will work just fine for the device.
