Donation X2 for a developer - Motorola Droid X2

This was originally on the bootloader unlock bounty thread, splitting it into its own thread since its a separate issue.
Donations offered for buying a used x2 to send to a developer so that they can unlock the bootloader :
20.00 mattchenzo
10.00 hapyman
15.00 0vermind
25.00 spr0k3t
10.00 Mr_GreenJeans
Total:
$80
renofreak has a new X2 he is offering for $250, as soon as we raise that we can sendwhichever the phone to whichever dev. seems the most interested/able... at least that seems to be the current plan.
Let's support our developers!

Unless the atrix or a similar moto unlocked bootloader would work with the x2 this is a lost cause.

Well, our bootstrap recovery thing came from the ATRIX, right? So there's that...

I didn't see the thread that is for the purchase of the phone, but I am willing to put 25 down for the phone and 25 for the finished product. As well as my never-ending gratitude. I am also willing to shell out my phone, if that is what it takes. I can use my original Droid til it is done.

Locked bootloader newbie question

Just an educational question, but why can't we just overwrite the kernel and bootloader the way the phone is right now? How exactly is it that motorola keeping us from uploading custom kernels and such?
If I'm not mistaken, they've signed the boot partition with an encrypted key. In order to overwrite it, you have access it & in order to access it, it's got to be unlocked & in order to unlock it you have to have the product-specific key. Without it you can't get permission to mount it as r/w. Think Motorola's chastity belt.

Im hopeful but not counting on it. I feel like a lot of dev might focus on bionic beast due out later this week. I really hope it happens within a week tho that would be amazing.
A weeks being very optimistic not that there's anything wrong with that tho.. because that would awesome; and hopefully the bionic will bring more attention to Motorola/tegra as a whole, rather than steal it from dx2, which would hopefully be in our favor.

ICS launch event

Who watched the ICS launch and is even more angry about having a locked bootloader?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
I watched the event. Now hoping that the X2 is on the list to get the update.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
I am going to say that the X2 wont get it, at least not anytime soon until Moto breaks it down and skins it(so maybe next summer). The fact that there is so much built into the phone to function without buttons means that Moto has to build in and map their functionality. And, since supposedly the Xoom is the first to get it on tablet, you would think it would go to the Razr, then Bionic/Atrix 2/Photon 4g, THEN the lower end devices. Needless to say, I don't think you should get your hopes up.
I watched it though. I was VERY impressed with some of the things I saw! The lock screen portion with the video was really cool! However, I don't think I would want my phone to do that everytime, seems too tedious still. Maybe after the phone has been passive for 20 minutes or something like that.

Yeah, take it with a grain of salt for sure. Worth a read at least.
Here is why it had me thinking. Moto always blames Verizon for the BL. HTC and Sammy phones get unlocked all day. So why would Verizon bias Moto? It gets the gears churning boys...

I don't believe any Moto phone has their bl unlocked, do they? The lock is all Moto. My gut is telling me if it were up to Google they would have all phones
unlocked and completely open.
Either way, thx for sharing! Good to see you lingering around here yet.

Back on topic, I heard that all phones running 2.3 will get ics...that means us. So I have my hopes up. I also have my hopes that moto will make good on their deadline to unlock their devices.

My thoughts are, with the patent wars, Google is trying to cover their ass right now. Until the proposed deal is approved, they are wanting to make sure that nothing slips thru the cracks that could be harmful to their cause in the hands of the opposition. Not to mention, they probably have some new devices in testing along with new hardware components that would be in Google's best interest not to have leaked until they are certified by the FCC. I am going to have to give Google the benefit of the doubt, and say until the deal is approved, they are doing what they can to cover their asses.
As far as VZW being to blame for Moto, I think it has to do with the fact that Moto is an American company, and they can be pressured by big Red. Whereas HTC and Samsung typically have a broader market share outside of the US. Especially with Sammy being a monstrosity of a Korean company in all terms. I lived in Korea for 2 years(Army), LG and Sammy run their world over their! LG is even the biggest ISP! They are leaps and bounds beyond what we have in the US over there though. Thanks to the FCC and FTC! My computer monitors are 2 Innopix 24" OLED 1920x1200 and I bought them there almost 4 years ago for $150/ea! I built my entire computer setup there Feb 2008, I still score a 6.8 on Windows experience index. Cost me less than $1,500 for what would have cost $4,000 easily to buy off of Best Buys shelf... Not to mention Apple, ugh.

The simple fact that they locked the Razr before it is even released, lends me to believe your hopes will be crushed. Sorry man, no reason to lock a phone during the same period you stated you would unlock them.
Now, if 4.0 is still a "Google Experience" as other phones update to it, without their blur's and sense's like honeycomb was for tablets, MAYBE.
Didn't I read ICS requires 1G of RAM?

According to a spokesman, the lockdown was at the request of the carrier -- VZW, in this case. I am so sick of the shenanigans ...
I sent a tweet to moto asking if they have a list of phones that is going to get the ICS update. Maybe they will respond.

I understand the locked bootloaders because VZW probably spends thousands of dollars replacing phones for people who don't know what they are doing, just trying to impress friends. But still, we payed for it, its ours, we should be able to break it if we want
And I think we will get ICS, it just might take longer than expected.

Droid x2's worth

Sent from my XT910 using XDA
Unlocked Droid x2s are going for about $150 US on Ebay today.
I haven't had any luck with craigslist at just below $100 so I'm not sure Ebay can pull off $150, might be wrong though.
They key word might be unlocked though, but I'm not sure how you would go about doing that.
I dunno, but even some Verizon variants are hitting $150.

I came across an X2 on craigslist for 100 bucks.

I see the original Droid X sell for $100 all the time on a local classifieds site. So I'm sure you could get at least $150 for an X2
I would say around $100-$150 but its gonna be hard to find someone that would want to buy it. You gotta me a salesmen!
On Swappa, which is like an Ebay/craigslist type site that only sells phones, they're going for $100-150

$100 Credit for Upgrade (For Everyone)

https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/ci/documents/detail/2/motorola-jelly-bean-rebate_en-US
Basically, if Motorola doesn't upgrade your 2011 Motorola smartphone to Jelly Bean they will (most likely) give you a $100 credit towards a new phone. Limited details right now but I signed up for alerts. Rumors are X2 will be one of these phones.
So if you are looking to a new phone I would wait a few weeks. I'm probably going to be switching to the Razr Maxx HD (complicated name!) when it comes out and a $100 credit would be amazing!
Opinions? Anyone still use an X2 besides me?
I'm not so sure if it would be worth it. You need to trade in your old phone and the x2 is selling for at least 100 on swappa and other sites so why not choose cash over a gift card?
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
It's tempting...the $100 plus I do like how strong the build quality of this motorola phone is and the razr's do seem pretty tough as well, but I will probably pass and get something like a samsung note 2 or an htc incredible x that does/will have an unlocked bootloader. Plus I dont want to trade in my X2...rather keep it as a backup or wifi device that my kid can play on.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda app-developers app
We're definitely not getting JB. $100 is nice, but it's probably towards only moto devices. Which is fine. Razr HD for me when my upgrade is active.

How long does the offer last? My upgrade isnt available until April of next year. $100 off a $550 phone is still expensive. I'll probably end up switching from Motorola anyway when the time comes.

Your upgrade should bring it down to $200, plus the $100 off. And since you have moto now, they should honor it well into next year. My upgrade is in March, but I might swing in around January and see if I can get it a month or two early.
Definitely sticking with moto. I've had numerous Samsung devices that I've needed to have replaced. Not a single problem with my DX2, and it takes a serious beating. Moto definitely makes the best physical handsets, period.
