Hi, I just got the hp touchpad and I am trying to find a good ebook reader. I have calibre on my PC so I can convert to most formats. I tried out preader but it doesn't render the text very well and very laggy.

Did you try preader Native? I tried another preader version and wasn't happy. Then I found com.mhwsoft.preader-native_0.9.9_all.ipk at
precentral.net/preader-native-alpha (new user so I can't post links)
and think it will serve me fine until Android is ported.

prereader on the market was the best I could find and it was junk. I'll have to check that out.
Anybody figure out how to side load into the Kindle app?
Ya, tried that but it wasn't loading my .epub book when I added it to the library.
yep, that beta/alpha version of preader is best. Its still total junk but at least its free....really though, at the point that its that awfully inefficient the guy is probably better off trying to generate html and just toss it to WebKit. I mean come on, so slow and buggy with the progress.

I ended up buying the Touchpad Demo version from RadioShack, not realizing that it would not allow me to access the HP Market. As such, I can't download the Kindle app from there. Anyone know how I can get it to my Touchpad? I think the apps for Wed OS are .ipk, as opposed to android's .apk's. Does anyone have the Kindle.ipk?
P.S. I don't think this qualifies as asking for freeware in violation of the rules as the Kindle App is free on the market, and I just need the installation file to be able to use it. If that is incorrect, mods please remove this request. Thanks.
UPDATE:
Never mind, thanks to some of the guys here at XDA I was able to install a clean copy of the latest Web OS on my "Demo" Tablet, and register for a new Web OS account. A Demo no more, but a full fledged Web OS Tablet. I downloaded the Kindle app from the market, but now trying to figure out how to get .mobi books to show up on the Kindle App.

There is some info on this at precentral.net in the TouchPad subforum. You might take a gander as it sounds like the demo units were not supposed to be sold and may be permanently locked out of accessing the app store.

Well you can just download a free amazon book, and rename your mobi books to the /.palmkindle directory, but they show up as the name of the amazon book, and I'm pretty sure its impossible to change that because the name of the book is in the main database file for webos. This isn't a real satisfactory solution. I whonder how HP could sell the Touchbook without a working ebook reader preinstalled. I guess its things like these, that made people refrain from WebOS.

I use my touchpad for viewing my digital textbooks (.PDF) in class. I'm currently using adobe reader but it lags considerably. I've tried using calibre to convert them to .mobi but it didn't work.
so I'm looking for one as well..
Managed to pick up a cheap 32GB... So disappointed about the lack of a half-decent book reader, and the Kindle app doesn't seem to be available to people in the UK
I had this same problem. I tried pReader, but the version in the market took forever to load even one .mobi ebook, and froze when I tried to load a second.
The Alpha version from the preware store refused to load .mobi files at all for me - it let me select them, and said it was loading, but they never appeared in the list.
I ended up using Calibre to convert all of my ebooks to .epub, and loading these into the Alpha version of pReader - it loaded all of them (about 200) quickly, and they look OK. It is still a bit laggy and rough around the edges, but its good enough for me until someone comes up with something better (or the pReader devs release an update).
How do you get back to the main menu in the preader native version? Im stuck inside one of the books and cant get out.
edit: Nevermind I just uninstalled it and reinstalled it. I think by putting it into fulllscreen I couldnt get into the drop-down to go back. So... DO NOT PUT INTO FULLSCREEN IN DISPLAY PREFERENCES!!!
Also, if you are using pReader and haven't done this already, try setting the encoding to UTF-8.
I had all of the special characters showing up as junk before this.

This took me a bit to figure out, but I did. I double-tapped toward the top half of the screen and it pulled the top menu bar back up. Similar to the bottom, where if you tap, it activates or deactivates the progress bar. What a pain in the ass and rather unintuitive if you don't know what you're doing.

I checked out the previous threads on Overdrive here, and the latest one seemed to still be about the clunky interface Overdrive used to make you go through to get your library epubs.
No more! Found the Overdrive app in Google Market works fantastically on CM7 Nook Color --- basically it's a one-stop shop to borrow library books and even more convenient now than it is to borrow for the Kindle app.
Aside from being a general epub reader, it allows you to read DRMed (your Adobe ID is required) epubs from your local elibrary. It asked for my library location, then my library ID (library card #), and from there I was able (still within Overdrive app) to peruse the selection of available ebooks as well as put ones on hold that weren't available.
After selecting a number of titles, I put them in the Bookbag, then checked out. I was then able to download each title by clicking on a download button within Overdrive, and they appeared within my app library list.
Better yet, MP3 audiobooks from the library system also work flawlessly within this app!
Really, really happy with this app --- CM7 Nook Color really gives the best of all worlds for ereading: Ability to purchase from B&N and Amazon (and third-party non-DRMd publishers), ability to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from local library with ease for multiple formats (availabilities differ, so this is a huge perk).
Yeah, I was looking at this over the last couple of days too. Do you know if I can open the epubs in the nook app rather than Overdrive (it's still my preferred reader for e-books)? I tried just copying the epub over to the Adobe Digital Editions folder, which got the nook app to recognize it, but it hits an error opening it.
This is the first I have heard of such an app. Sounds interesting, so checking it out as soon as I finish typing this post

I'm not sure you can, I don't use the Nook app for reading anymore since they had that *long* period with the bug where the menus were massively slow to respond, if at all.
According to Overdrive's site, the native nook color app is compatible with almost all the formats Overdrive provides, but no mention is made of the generic nook app for android:

Which browser are you using? Try poking around in the menu settings for "user agent" - I usually have mine set to desktop. This tells websites that you're a desktop user and not a mobile user.
i tried the default stock browser , with Linux Desktop , Mac desktop and IE6 user agent
it still said that it was a mobile site and i cant download. I am able to see the desktop version on other sites.
Overdrive available for Nook Tablet?

I am new here. I'm considering purchasing the Nook Tablet for my 13 year old. Our school tech director said the biggest drawback is that it does not have the Overdrive App, which would allow us to download library books directly to the Nook Tablet. She said we would have to download to a computer and then download to the Nook Tablet.
I see on this thread that it appears that someone has been able to use the Overdrive App on their Nook Color. Am I understanding that correctly? Do you know if it is possible to get Overdrive on the Nook Tablet? I talked to the Nook guy at B&N yesterday and he said the Overdrive App is still not available for the Nook.
Any insight is appreciated! I like the Nook Tablet better than the Kindle Fire, but I'm concerned about the ease of downloading.

The Overdrive app -- which yes, lets you download library DRM'ed epubs directly to your Nook Color -- is available in Google Market, not B&N store. The people in this thread are using it either on a rooted (like a jailbroken iphone, allows you to install 3rd-party apps) Nook Color or are using an entirely different OS (CM7) on the Nook Color than what it originally came with.
The unrooted, what we call "stock" (OS) Nook Color won't be able to use the Overdrive app even if you sideload it because the OS won't allow you to install 3rd-party applications.
This area of XDA (Nook Color forums) has a lot of information on how to root your Nook Color, or otherwise --- so you don't invalidate your warranty --- run CM7 on an SD card in your Nook Color. The second option is the best for beginners who want to see what can be done with their Nook Colors, as you retain an untouched stock OS in the Nook Color, but can run a different OS that allows you to use Google Market and other 3rd-party app sources from SD card.

Edit: I forgot to mention about the Nook Tablet, I believe the ability to root it has been found but because B&N has made it more difficult to modify (it has a locked bootloader, which prevents you from installing custom ROMs) many people who are using rooted Nook Colors haven't switched over. You'd be in the same boat regarding Overdrive app as with an unrooted Nook Color (i.e. unable to install and use it).

Okay; I'm able to view and download using the stock browser set to Android and Opera Mobile set to either tablet or desktop. Setting the stock browser to iPad gives me an error once I get to the download screen. So try Android as the user agent, and if that doesn't work, I do highly recommend Opera Mobile as a great tablet browser (converted me from Dolphin HD).

If you run cm7 you can download overdrive app from market. I download books from my local library all thr time. Works great!

FYI, for those that want the overdrive app and find their home library isn't on the list....you CAN contact a library on the list and do a long distance membership. most things are working well, but i cannot get Kobo reader to actually run. i un-installed and re-installed it many times (5-ish?), hoping to get it right, but no.
i wonder if it's the same problem as this one on nookColor.

You will probably need to root it (I suggest doing this asap, and following the thread on blocking the updates, for other reasons as well). It works fine on rooted NTs.
Anyone know of a good epub or pdf reader that does the paper/page animation when swiping between pages?
I tested a couple online and they either garble up my epubs or just crash or loop when loading
The stock Asus "my library" has a great page turning animation function and is good for reading epubs and PDF 's. You can select it by opening any PDF or epub in the file manager.
I also found "mantano reader" which has a great note taking ability within the epub or PDF, however it does not have a cool page turn animation. I need this function for notes at school...

I just tried nook (on my phone) and it seems to work great but, I'm reading a watchtower epub and it has like a paragraph then you can click on the scripture and it takes you to it but how do I get back? I see no options to get back to the page I orginally clicked it on.
My Library locks up and FC's on me sometimes lol its not really cutting it for what I want it for maybe I have to tweak it or something?

Moon+ is the best on the market, especially if you have any illegal copies of ebooks. If you go pro it's even better. I've tried about every ebook reader on the market, the best are laputa(extinct now), Moon+ Pro, and Alkido.
No others come close. Also Moon+ had an easy change cover option and great note taking, plus the pro version has tts.

I've always used Aldiko but I'll have to check out Moon+. Aldiko wouldn't read a couple of my pdfs and epubs (like 2/50 so far).
WOW on this long road to finding what I need I think I got my combo.

ezPDF Reader is really nice and slick (Pay App) (I got it for free on Amazon awhile ago)
For EPUB Files
Convert to Mobi Using Calibre
Then Use Kindle
Kindle is slick and seems to be tablet friendly AND shows all my photos for all my epubs

i'm not rooted and use the paid ver. of Alkido, i have yet to actually buy a book, d/l'd everything and side-loaded it, reads all of my pdf's and epubs, not sure if i got mobi to work or not, all covers shown and nice layout....went through 3-4 of them and fooled around with the stock one for a few days before i settled on this one, i'll check out moon+ as working with unscrupulous files is a big deal to me on a tablet device (why are epub's more expensive then a hard back or paper back on the market? wtf?...enough of that talk though...)
i bought my device mainly for reading comics (200 gigs +) , video games , and wanking off during meetings at work, figuratively not literally, sicko's, lol...update this thread with your impressions after a while i may have to switch again ;-)
Moon reader+ is good. It can even use TTS to read books for you in the pro version.

If you're into comic reading, there is nothing better on the market than ComicRack (has a paired desktop app to for organizing and sync) it's the best one I've used (wanted to read Blackest Night & Civil War events on my Droid) none of the others worked as good as it does.
Given your comics are in the comic format (cbz, cbr, etc).

I figured this topic deserved a post of it's own, so as not to get lost within the CM7 support thread, so I created it.
The only real concern I had, before switching to CM7, was what about Adobe PDF ebook format? There is some DRM in there that can only be opened (as far as I can tell) by the stock B&N Reader app. So I suppose my questions are these:
1.Is the stock B&N Reader app already included in the CM7 ROM? If so, can it open Adobe PDF ebook format?
And if not, then...
2.Are there any other (vanilla Android) app(s) that can open these kind of files?
3.If you backup the stock B&N Reader app (using TiBu, etc.), then restore it back into your newly installed CM7, does it still work with the Adobe PDF ebook format (and possibly other forms of DRM as well)?
Apparently, this Adobe PDF ebook is one of the predominant formats used by libraries to allow checking out of materials available electronically (something I have just been looking into lately) and so I thought it would be an important issue for others as well.

Yes Adobe's Digital Addition it is very important.
Without this capability you will limit your access to reading material to basically purchased; I think you will find the BN free book list wanting. I limit my book purchases to a few authors (the electronic books are expensive compared to printed from what I can tell they can not be resold).
The Adobe digital addition will not load onto a stock nook. I was hoping that could be fixed at some point. The Nook reader is well worth keeping.
most libraries, in the NY area at least, have some ebook lending capabilities available through their website. There's an app called OverDrive available on Android Market (and iphone/ipad App Store) that links in to many of these libraries and handles the DRM and serves as the reader. It's fairly well-featured and allows to search for your local library in the US by ZIP code. All can be done OTA in this case, without a need to hook up to USB to move over the Adobe Digital Edition files.
If you really prefer the Kindle app, many of the ebooks the library lends can also be sent to your Kindle account, which any Kindle or Kindle app can pick up.

If this is a concern I think you could always just flash back to a nandroid of the stock rom or wait for a cm7 bootable SD card and just pull it and put into stock when you need this.

You can do all this from your NT. Download Aldiko from the market. Download the acsm file from your public digital library. Use a file explorer - I use Root Explorer, Astro does not work for some reason - to select acsm then wait a few seconds as you receive epub.

Using a program like Calibre, you can strip the DRM and load the pdf onto your nook, or convert it into a different format.
I personally haven't had a chance to try the Overdrive app for a pdf file, only epub, but for the most part it works well.

Overdrive is merely a middleman. I think Aldiko offers a superior reader.

SD card version of CM7 is currently in the final testing stages. Look for it to be released by Celtic very soon.
I don't currently have any pdf files with DRM in them. I have never had one far as I know. I have always been able to read pdfs one way or another on any android device. As far as the B&N stock app being included with CM7, no, that app in particular will not work. However the B&N app in the market works for most things. DRM protected epubs purchased from B&N, purchasing, reading etc.
For me, the switch to CM7 has been almost all Pros and very few Cons. The NT boots quicker, touch screen seems much more responsive and I can tweak just about any setting I can imagine. The only Con has been an intermittent wifi issue but a simple reboot fixes that if/when it pops up.

Con of CM7 is stability. I was taking notes for about 10 minutes and it locked up and reboot.

Cons of cm7:
No B&N content.
intermittent wifi issues.
you need to remove and replace the sd card at times
you have too many choices to decide what to do with your tablet.
Cons of Stock.
B&N content
you have to deal with barnes and noble's restrictions on everything they could possibly restrict
you have too few choices about what to do with your tablet
you have too see the annoying nook logo on boot for halfway to forever. (what did they extend the time it takes you to boot just to get more airtime for the nook logo, in case someone, somewhere didn't know it was a nook by barnes and noble?
Pros of CM7
CM7 (Android and all the awesome that comes with a open ROM)
Android Market - Apps, Music, Books, etc
Pride in an unlocked device
Any ereader you want!
Pros of 1.4.x (Stock Nook ROM)
Full B&N support
Full B&N compatibility
Perfectly working Netflix
The biggest Pro for Stock, and so the biggest Con to CM7, is the lack of stability. Remember, CM7 is still alpha software. And I love it!

Downloaded Aldiko. Downloaded acsm from library. Used es file explorer to select acsm file. Selected open with Aldiko.
I get an error: Could not load file.
Just realized. I downloaded the file with overdrive directly to nook and its saved as epub not acsm. Can this be the problem?
So far loving cm7. Only problem has been wifi. Moving around the house, on a weak signal wifi will not turn on. I have to leave wifi on & it works fine.

After posting, I realized that some of what I said in my OP may have been construed as nit-picking. I suppose what I should have said was, "I have been anxiously awaiting the CM7 ROM and am very excited about it's release. However, I have just begun trying to download some ebooks from my local library and have come across some issues with DRM, specifically Adobe PDF ebook format..." which would be much closer to my sentiments on the matter.
I did hear quite a few good things about the Aldiko reader when I was quickly trying to solve this problem the other day (before posting). I will try that (as well as the other suggestions) and report back my findings. Give me another week or two though, we just moved and are still working on getting settled in to the new place.

Very possible. I downloaded the acsm file directly through the library site as opposed through Overdrive... in fact, I have that completely uninstalled.

Very interesting... I thought I would try ES Explorer to try and open an ascm file and apparently, it doesn't recognize file associations that are set up for the file. I get the option to open the file as text/image/video/audio but no way to open it with Aldiko.
I tried Astro but at the moment I'm using rooted 1.4.0 and Astro doesn't work well with that setup. (Does it work any better in CM7???) I used the search function, typed in part of the ascm file name, and clicked on the appropriate file in the results and it opened in Aldiko. A pain in the butt, but it worked.

No, Astro does not appear to work with CM7, from what I can tell. Root Explorer gave me the best results.

I just found out the biggest disadvantage I could ever think of about a stock Nook. Something that made me delete my backup and forget 1.4.1 ever existed - a terrible oversight by B&N, IMHO.
It's useless outside the US.
I can't believe B&N. When I bought the Nook, the salesman who sold it to me knew perfectly well I lived in Mexico. He never mentioned I can't buy any books with an international credit card, or even if I had a US card, I wouldn't be able to download them outside the country.
Seriously - WTH? Had I known that, I'd have bought a Kindle immediately. I love the children's books on the Nook. I like the magazines, and B&N store. And I'm locked out of it.
As it is, I just deleted the Nook app and will stick with CM7 from now on. God bless the Kindle app.

I've been using NT stock, rooted for a while, and I'm getting a bit tired of it. This close (pinches fingers together) to taking the plunge and going CM 7. How well does the Nook app work? I'm assuming it doesn't let you access magazines, but otherwise, I'll get all the books I bought through them, right? Does it function much differently from the stock reader?
I've only got one magazine subscription, the New Yorker, and their implementation leaves much to be desired. I'm about ready to switch to a digital subscription with them and just run Cyanogen.
Sorry for putting this here. It's impossible to search for threads on the Nook app, because everyone likes writing "nook" in their thread titles.

The Nook app works pretty well on the Android side, and yes you can get all of your books and certain magazines. If you look at the Nook magazine subscription, it will tell you if it's available for the Nook app, PC reading, or just Nooks. I checked, and the New Yorker only works with the Nooks themselves. The reader is very similar to the "stock" reader, and I actually like the page turning animation better -- it looks much more like a real page turn.
I dual boot (native Nook and CM7 SD card) so I can still use the Nook native reader for my magazine content -- which, for those to which I subscribe, is Nook only, not Nook app.
Thanks. I might try out the dual-boot for a while. Actually, the only magazine I subscribe to is the New Yorker, and the implementation is pretty disappointing. If you back out of the app (each issue is actually its own app), it loses your place in the article, and it doesn't give you subscriber access to your archive. They have a digital subscription that gives you full access, so I might just try it that way. It's not a very visually compelling magazine to begin with.
