i want to upgrade to 2.3, but there are many threads with many roms, what exactly are roms?? i found the link for 2.3 generic firmware here,

1) What is the difference between two files?
2) What is kernel and baseband files? Do i need to download them as well if i download firmware from above link??
3) Do i need to download recovery image?
4) What is the difference between stock firmware and roms? Does roms act as add on stock firmware? Does 2.3 rom works only when we use 2.3 firmware?
5) Can the firmware downloaded from above link, can it be simply installed using the flashtool like it is done here -

*) same firmware with minor difference i think. Almost no difference between them.
*) if you using .ftf (flashtool files), you dont need to flash baseband and kernel, they are included in .ftf bundle i think.
*) i have no idea what you mean. But if you mean backup files to restore via recovery, you dont need them if you flash your firmware via flashtool.
*) no difference between them, just similar name, firmware and ROM is sinonym. Firmware is ROM and ROM is Firmware. CMIIW
*) yes i think.

Hello jet0n,
first you should flash newest baseband .54 , wich baseband did you have ??
after that
you can install 2.2 Froyo from freeX10
Download it :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900441
FreeX10-beta4.zip - fixed to work with baseband .54, xRecovery 0.3-unified, minor improvements
REQUIRES LATEST KERNEL AND BASEBAND 2.1.54 (shipped in stock 2.1.A.0.435 ROM)
gapps_FreeX10.zip - Google Apps (Market, Youtube etc.)
this rom is very stable ! You can also install cyanogen Mod (many extra features) under:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940302
Try it...

If you want Beta 4, you must have latest baseband (2.1.A.0.435)
Go look in the dev section
After getting the latest base band you need to flash the Tom via xrecovery. To access x recovery you will have to press the back button repeatedly when you see the Sony erricson text displayed whole booting. From there go to install custom zip and then choose beta 4. Use your volume keys to navigate

B- Download this 2.3 ftf tested file, put the file inside the flashtool in the "firmware" folder, press flash button in the Flashtool and connect usb cable holding BACK button of the phone
http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/0OIDEZNA/ credits to "wesvista" for this file

Apparently also works with other generic firmwares, such as the DE one.
works for me as well. I am on a branded X10a Rogers phone in Canada. Flashed the above ftf and everything works perfect. I was on J's CM7 at that time.
It's working!!

So yes, your method would work but there are no longer any firmwares posted in the thread you linked to (all dead links). I'm sure you could find one though- there is an x10a FW in the rollout thread...
Or try this thread if you want to just root the 2.1 rom & install xrec and install a custom rom from there.
Thanks for that link, thats what i was looking for

1) If you are already on 2.3.3(GB-GingerBread) then there is no need to flash .71 basenand as you are already on it.
2) if you want to reduce steps just upgrade to 2.3.3 official via SEUS or PCC
3) what do you mean both camera? we only have one back camera which will work perfectly
4) wifi will also be perfect
