This didn't used to happen, but I noticed it about a month and a half ago. Early on with this phone picture messages would come in fine...I could click on them and they'd look normal when they open up in the gallery. Those messages from then still look fine and function normally. But any picture messages I've received in the last month or so don't work right...They download to my phone (when I have mobile data on, which makes sense), but there's a play button over the picture. When I click on it it it opens up the photo but it looks tiny and I can't zoom in or anything or open with the gallery, etc. If I longpress the message without opening it, it only lets me play as slideshow which is still reallllly small. If I "download attached to SD card" it saves in my file system and when I open it up later it looks normal. But I don't want to have to download every picture message I get to my SD card just to look at it...
What's the deal here? I use GoSMS but I got this problem sometime after I started using that. Either way, the problem occurs in my stock app as well. I can't remember if this coincides with when I flashed GingerBlur or not...
FYI, this happens when I get messages from any iPhone AS WELL as friends with android phones. Any thoughts?
EDIT: also, if anyone thinks it IS GoSMS though, let me know! I don't remember this happening when I first started using it, but I dunno I'm willing to try all possibilities. Maybe a rogue setting in GoSMS is screwing it up?
Not GOSMS. I get the problem with the GingerBlur messaging, as well as stock Atrix messenger.

Interesting, so that should mean GoSMS, the GingerBlur flash or the stock GingerBread messaging app aren't causing it...hmmm...
This is an android issue. Had the same issue when using my nexus one, Dell streak 5 and now the Atrix. It sucks. Never found a way to fix it. Some messages used to come through fine but I haven't notice any work lately at all. They all come through like a small video file and are much smaller in size unless I copy to the sd card.
I'll try to grab some friends phones ( evo 4g, epic 4g, droid x) and see what it's like on their phones.
I also noticed that with animated gifs as well! They are showing up to people as pics only and are very small in size no matter how big they originally were! It's quite aggravating and I tried gosms, handscent, chompsms, and a crapload of others and none are working right!
This is not a problem... This happens when the MMS has several "slides", for example, a picture and some text.
If it only includes a picture, you see it directly.

I see. That's quite absurd, and even if it isn't a real Android problem, this should be changed...
Hello there,
I just got my Tab a week ago and I'm very happy with it. I'm having a problem though with the email app on the tablet.
Whenever I receive an email with an attachment, it shows that the email has an attachment, but I cant open it. Doesnt give me anything to click on. Anyone else have this problem or knows a solution?
Second question: I tried playing movie/tv series on my tablet, which seems to work fine except for .mkv files. After some research on the internet, I downloaded several movie players in the market, none of which seem to be able to play mkv files properly. Video and sound is desyncronized and the image misses frames (looks like slow motion).
Only player which managed to play it properly is "Dice player". Although it skips like 12 seconds at the beginning of the video.
Thanks a lot.
The video question gets asked all the time. Basically if you are playing downloaded movies then you are not in control over the encoding settings and therefore subject to any playback issues associated with the tablet's hardware decoding limitations. Right off the bat know that 1080p is highly unlikely and that reliable and very acceptable playback of 720p can be achieved if you encode your own files (or re encode tnose that you download). Search this forum for handbrake settings that work for others.
As for email it might be helpful to describe what app you are using and what mailbox type.

thanks for the quick answer.
I use the email app that was on the tablet, just called email. With the K9 Email app everything seems to work (I use K9 on my phone too). However I find the UI of the "email" app better and would like to use that one on the tablet. Cant seem to find why attachments are not shown though...

hi,
i also, use the touchwizz email on tab ,
attachments is working fine, but you first have to download attachment ,then tap a few times along the blue line ,till you find the " sweet spot " !
it takes time to get use to get it right(its , on not always on same spot ) just lightly tap from top of blue line till end , of attachment ,it will open or you can just save attachment and then open image in the sd/download folder ( easier )
good luck
I've never had any problems with email attachments. What type of files are you trying to open? Do you have an app on your tablet that can handle that type of file?
it's just normal jpg files. I dont have trouble displaying them, I dont even get an option the download them. The attachment symbol is shown, but no option to actually download it.
EDIT: Okay I just played around a bit and tried forwarding an email with jpg attachment. Strangely enough the attachment is then shown and in the "email writing" window I can download the attachment. But I still dont see it when I read my mails. This cant be the answer, that I have to "forward" an email in order to be able to download the attachement.
Thanks a lot
Dice Player is as good as it'll get. You may find that after the skipping at the beginning, restarting the video (not completely, but with the slider) may allow you to play it from the beginning without the initial stutter.

ok thanks, I tried the Handbrake program which works great even with players other than Dice Player. Converting takes an awful long time though.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix my email problem?
Thanks
Not sure.
Just setup that app, I normally don't use it as I use primarily Gmail and my corporate Exchange accounts.
In testing briefly what I see when an email has an attachment is that under the message header but above the message itself there are headings for "Message" and "Attachment _". If I click the attachment heading I see the attachment with it's file size and I'm able to click that to download the attachment after which i'm given the option to select an app to open the attachment (if I haven't chosen a default action for that file type yet).

ok, I'm not given that heading for attachment. very weird...
EDIT: okay I just sent some emails to myself with a different address from my laptop. Strangely enough, I can now see the attachments... Still, the other mails in my inbox, I cant see/open the attachments.
It gets really annoying that even when I get a single picture in a text, it plays it like a slideshow. Is there any fix for this, or any other way to disable it?
Aside from getting Handcent or GOSms that is.
Running CM9 btw.
Might want to post in the cm9 thread that you're using. It might be a bug with the rom that the developer could fix.
Nah, it's like that in every rom I've used. It's not a bug, its a "feature" of Android.

Not a feature in any android rom I've used. Never have I gotten a single pic come thru as a slideshow on stock messaging or handcent.
You can long press on the message and press on download attachments. Then you could watch the pictures full sized on the gallery without any forced slideshow. I know it doesnt really fix things, but it's the workaround I use.

Yes that happens when its more than one picture for me as well, but OP is stating its a single (1) picture that shows as slideshow.

Everywhere I've seen, even for other phones as well, single pictures play back as slide shows for people, where you click the picture icon, and a play, next, and previous icon show up at the bottom.

You can send them but they have to a certain size. The old WM phones let you set the limit to about 600kb for videos and pictures. I know the Iphone will only accept pics and videos upto 3MB and I am not sure about android phones but I highly doubt that it will let you send large videos either. My guess is the carrier regulates this so people are not sending large files bogging down their networks. Its not practicle to send large videos cause it could take some people forever to download them. Videos sent from phones are meant to be small clips. If you need send a large file or someone needs to view your videos the internet is there for that. It would be nice to have the ability to send files of any size but computers are made for that not phones. If you want someone to see something record a quick video and start at 5MB and see if it sends if not record a little less till You find the right size in MB that can be sent. If you set your camcorder to low quality you can send longer vidwos. I have sent and received videos on IOS that were high quality and could only send videos that were about 30 seconds long.
Edit: I guess some devices have a limit as low as 300kb but I am guessing that the Note has a limit of 1-2MB cause of the great camera.

Well, anything over 5 seconds is considered too large. I've tried using the built in "for MMS" option for recording and the quality absolutely sucks. I mean bad. I've upped my limits in Handcent to 5Mb ecen though it states for EVO only but still can't send.

I use VidTrim Pro to transcode and compress my videos for MMS, since unlike the iPhone, Android doesn't do this automatically. I have to use the QCIF (176x144 pixels) setting with low video quality to get any decent length video sent.
But FYI, AT&T has a 600KB limit on their network. The Note is perfectly capable of MMS sizes up to 4MB I believe, but they won't be delivered because of AT&T's limit.

So your saying that no matter my settings in Handcent, AT & T will not send anything more than 600k? IIRC, when I had the fruit phone, there was a Jailbreak tweak that somehow managed to get passed this limitation.

Videos taken with this or any of the current smartphones are too large to do anything with. I mean a 30 second video can be 50 mb. A file that large you cant even email. You are better off uploading it to youtube or photobucket and sharing the link .
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
MMS is just not well-suited for sending video. Using email or cloud services are preferred at this point. That way all you have to do is send a text link to the video and you won't have to sacrifice quality either.
My 2c.

There's a setting in the stock camera that lets you choose the video limits. One of the options is mms, so maybe try that.

Thanks but that setting really sucks for quality. Audio AND video suffers. Honestly, for the sender and receiver, using a link to watch a vid kinda sucks. Much easier to shoot and send then shoot, send, upload(which on cellular data could take forever), then text the link. Then the receiver must also be on good data to even view it.
THERE MUST BE A WAY AROUND THIS.

Some pictures come through as videos and some don't. It's really puzzling.
Stop me if I'm wrong but if you put 2 pictures in one text message it shows up as "video" and when you hit play it does a slide show between the two pictures. As oppose if you only have one picture in one text message it shows it as a picture text.
Does that make sense?

if one mms contain two or more images or more than one pages. it will display like video. play button would be show to you.
but only one image will not.
We've tested it with one image and the same thing happens.

i have same issue, Wanna know some thing i found out. Pinch to zoom in messaging app, can make it smaller. pretty cool.
