[Q] How to completely wipe phone? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've made a few mistakes when trying to install the latest cyanogen Nightly to my SGS2.
I initially tried the ROM Manager method of flashing to Cyanogen but only managed to get myself stuck in only being able to boot into ClockWork Mod Recovery mode so I ended up having to use Odin to re-flash with Stock Mod (had to guess which stock rom I needed as I hadn't looked it up before heh) and when that completed my phone booted up ok and all my apps were there but the screen was strangely washed out in appearance. Not sure if the o2 UK rom that came with the phone had some tweaks to make the colours richer or something - I checked the display settings and it was at the setting I'd chosen previously.
Anyway, I re-tried using the Recovery mode instructions and now my phone is stuck at the boot screen and has been for 20 minutes. I'm aware the first boot after cyanogen is installed is meant to be longer (while it dexopts or something like that) but 20 minutes seems a trifle tardy so I suspect it's gone tits up again.
Oh well.
Onto my question:
I want to flash with the correct o2 UK version of the SGS2 rom whilst completely wiping everything from my phone including system internal sd and external sd.
Is this possible and how?

try this procedure provided by ithehappy.
Wipe Cache+ Factory Reset should work.
Anyway, try this in keypad,

Thanks for the help

Phone keeps rebooting. (loops)

First time I'm posting so hey.
I just bought a HTC Hero today and decided to load a custom ROM onto it.
I flashed it fine, and installed modaco earlier (file name: 2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed).
So when I powered it back on, it looked like it worked fine, but I must of went wrong somewhere.
The phone will boot up, stay on for like 5 seconds, and then restart. When it comes on, I can't do anything cause it freezes on the lock screen then just restarts.
I'm pretty sure I messed up by putting that ROM on a t-mobile UK Hero(which I unlocked). I aint sure as I'm only new to this.
Any advice on how to fix this?
did you do a phone wipe before installing the custom rom?
I formatted the SD card.... I think before I flashed it.
Then just put the ROM on the root of the SD card.
See it looked like it done everything fine with the ROM.
I held in the home/power buttons, loaded the boot menu.
I did a "Ndroid back up" (did I spell that right) - so I could restore in case something like this happened (which I did, since I need my phone lol), then picked "SD Choose", picked the modaco ROM and it seemed to install fine. Took a few minutes. Install complete. I rebooted the phone.
Then it loaded the normal boot screen, and would literally last only 1 second and freeze on the lock screen saying no signal, then it would reboot. And loop this pattern.

A wipe has nothing to do with the SD card. It is essentially resetting your phones internal memory back to "factory" defaults. I take it you have a custom recovery image, as you mentioned making a Nandroid backup - you will find an option to wipe there.
Regards,
Dave
So if I wipe the phone before hand and then upgrade it should be fine?
If I do a nandroid back up, will I still be able to roll my phone back if it fails?
A wipe now may fix your problems with you needing to upgrade again.
My suggestion would be trying this first - if it doesn't help, restore your nandroid backup, wipe, and apply the new ROM again.
Regards,
Dave
Cheers mate.
After the wipe, I re-installed the ROM and it works perfect.
Thanks again.

I need urgent help, did i brick my phone

ok so yesterday i rooted my telus fascinate and i was going to isntall the MIUI rom. Following a guides instructions i installed rom manager and did a clockwork mod recovery, i then put the rom on my root file of my sd card and tried to install it through the "install rom from sd card option" on the app. Problem was i only got into the stock recovery mode and not the clockwork one it aslo gave me signature failures. I then followed the guide of this video:
http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7xV0yE9ZcA
when i installed the kernel everything went fine but then after i got into CW recovery and installed the rom my phone booted and it just kept repeating the normal splash screen (it said galaxy I9000 instead) followed by a screen that said something like cryogenic mod. I got freaked out from here and tried to install stock kernels to get my phone running. As of right now my phone will boot but only stay on the splash screen. I can not access recovery mode. I really need some help, thanks.
these are some of the files i used:
the rom i used,

the kernel i used,

the links are broken. Did you install a rom / kernal specifically for the telus fascinate?
i believe it could have been for the galaxy I9000,
ill try to fix the links btw
update*
i managed to get it into clockwork recovery mode by holding the dam buttons for a solid 5 minutes, after doing this i pressed factory reset, now my phone is stuck saying:
-- wiping data...
Formatting DATA

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227807Until I know what version miui and kernal you are trying to flash, it's hard to help. It definately sounds like your phone is soft bricked tho.
Edit* Here are some links you should read up on.

it takes a little longer but i cant fix the links sorry.
So as of now i got i managed to wipe all of the data on my phone and i am in recovery mode, if i click reboot it does the same thing and stays on the boot screen. If i click the mod from the sd card it flashes from the normal model number screen to one saying cryogen mod. It then keeps going back and forth with a flash of a screen that has a bunch of commands on it for about 2 seconds

The rom you are trying to flash is for a i500 fascinate. I suggest taking the time to do alot of research before you turn the phone into an expensive paperweight. Read this link!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921285
K well i ran that rom and it works now but he only problem is i dont have any cell service, do you know how to fix that. I know that you are probably laughing at my mild retardism at this subject but i am a big noob. As for what you said in your previous reply is their an MIUI version for the fascinate from telus because i basically rooted my phone so i could get this rom.
thanks
Update*
i followed the instructions on the link you posted and chose the rom for MIUI I9000 as the one i was going to install but when i istall zip from sd it only says installed correctly and then when i reboot it keeps changing from the sgh-t959d to the galaxy s cyanogen screen
yea your boot looped now. I would run the rom that worked just install the compatible radio and kernal for it and you should get cell service back.
ok thanks i got all my cell service back and i got the MIUI rom to work. Now to just ry to remember all the apps i had
Your welcome...glad you got everything working!

Boot Loop on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 screen?

So I updated to the newest software MI5. Went from that and did the root which was sucessfully. I had put on OUDHS Touch CWM-based Recovery thru ODIN which was sucessful as well. After doing all of that, I downloaded Josh Beach's Jellybomb test rom. The steps I did was booted into recovery which is the one above, factory data reset, wiped cache, and wiped dalvik, then flashed the zip. The zip looked to flash ok but when i went to reboot, it just keeps getting stuck at the samsung galaxy note 3 screen, then it will reboot then go to the same screen. Did I do something incorrect? This happened to me on this ROM and the stock MI5 ROM rooted.

so it sounds like i cant flash any custom roms right now? Just odin back to stock and root it and leave it at that?
this probably wont help for this particular problem, or maybe it will.. but for anyone else getting a bootloop..
i just now had a bootloop experience that i got out of.. and here's how it started - i have not rooted my note 3 (i have rooted my galaxy gear though, but i don't think that would affect the note 3).. anyway, i use the nova launcher as my main launcher.. and just before i got stuck in a loop, i had been playing with a new launcher called Themer... i just started it without setting it as default.. then i went back to my main launcher and i noticed that almost all ram was used up and i thought i might as well do a restart as it has been a while... and then it just would not start.. i got to the lock screen image, and then it would restart again and again, with no sound for the animated logo.... it eventually booted up ok, but i have no idea how i got it to work... however, i held down the power button for a while longer and it would "force" a new restart and basically abort the one already in progress, and if i did that, the boot up sound would come back... i continued doing that a couple of items and then it finally worked.
use twrp or phones as of right now dont like cwm recovery...found this out the hard way
odin back to stock rom non root wipe phone using default recovery odin back to stock again root your phone use twrp to flash whatever rom u want

And when flashing make sure to wipe dalvik/caché several times for good measure.

checking in to add that i found a new solution to my own problem here.... it "magically" started the last time just by me keeping on rebooting.. but that's not really a good solution and i don't think it lasts
and for me it didn't... as today i did a new restart, and it got the same stuck in a loop again, however, i followed the first mentioned workaround in this link here and it worked perfectly.. it was really that simple in my case it seems, i have done several restarts now and the bootloop is gone!...
oops, seems i cant post any links for not having enough posts yet...
i'll just add the steps mentioned instead
1 . Remove the battery and the SD card.
2. Put the battery back in and turn on the device.
3. Try Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi > Menu > Advanced and uncheck Always allow scanning.
4. Now you should be able to turn the device off and reinsert the SD card.
5. Boot it up and your problem might be gone
i have no idea how it works though as i personally don't understand the connection between then external sd card and the setting you turn off in the wifi advanced options..
cheers!

Recover data from T399 with corrupted cache

I'm trying to get the user files off a phone with corrupted cache. When booted normally, it gets stuck on the white T-Mobile splash screen. When booting into recovery, I get an error about the cache and the phone restarts without loading into recovery. Screenshots attached.
I can get into download mode fine.
Using Odin to flash a custom recovery gives me the PASS message, but when I restart the phone, the stock recovery is still there with the same error message. I've tried TWRP and CWM.
I am hesitant to try flashing a custom ROM because I don't want to lose the data. The phone is not important, but the data is.

Dont try flashing a custom ROM on to the phone. Try flash the stock ROM through the lastest odin with the lastest drivers and let me know how that works out for ya. Unless that wipes the phone ( havent used it in quite some time) then I have no idea man.
I tried flashing the T399UVUAMJ4 ROM throught Odin. It went through the entire process and rebooted, but nothing changed. Does this mean the bootloader is locked?

I'm not sure maybe want to ask someone else I'm not as experienced as some people on here. Sorry man goodluck
I hope someone can help you out. I would say your cache partition somehow got renamed but I'm not sure if thats possible and if so how to fix it. Maybe someone with ADB knowledge can help?
Also what TWRP were you trying to install? I've had problems when I tried to flash older versions
okay so here is a site with the original firmware for the phone. It has both the t399 and the t399n for odin. It has them labeled so its not too confusing lol. http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f200/samsung-t399n-metro-pcs-firmware-here-1899016/
find the one for the t399, flash it with odin. this will fully restore your phone. HOPEFULLY it will be able to save the data. I know you said you did this before but I'm not sure if it was just system or everything like here.

So I tried the T399 files. Flashed with no errors, but when it reboots everything is still the same. I've even tried flashing from another computer. Mind boggling!

Thanks for the quick reply. Its a shame to hear that it didn't work
How did you come to this? as to me it seems the partions have be modified hence why giving those errors I seen similar errors to when users change cache sizes which tends to brick device or from using incorrect pit files.
You never be able to recover data from flashing Odin may be slim chance by custom Rom thru recovery if was a bkup of original system and not selecting data your old data may conflict causing either bootloop or basically stuck on splash screen.
If you was ever able to best way to pull data from device would be thru adb may have a chance.
This phone belongs to a friend of a friend. They said they brought it to T-Mo because it hung up during boot. The store worked on it for a few minutes, but couldn't get it to boot up either. When I tried to go into recovery, they said the store already went into that screen too. They have since bought a new phone, but would like to get the photos off it if possible. They never had an SD card so it's still on the device.
At the moment, I can just go into download mode. I was hoping to flash a custom recovery so I might possibly be able to ADB from there since it won't load the stock recovery.
I have a very similar issue but without "cache error messages". The phone (Samsung Galaxy Light with stock ROM and TWRP) just reboots no matter what I try to flash into it.
It does it while "drawing" the Samsung Logo animation (blue ring that gets created revealing the word samsung), so after the white wrintings of the phone name.
My attempts so far:
1. Flashed newer version of TWRP
2. Flashed CWM
3. Flashed two different versions of stock ROM (the original one and the one that T-Mobile released when upgraded to latest jelly Bean)
4. Flashed a custom ROM (Light ROM found here which is based on the stock one).
EVERY TIME the outcome was the same:
Phone reboots right after the phone name (written in white) while the Samsung animation starts. It just stops while the blue oval begins to appear. If I try to boot into recovery (via home/power/volume up combo) it shows the TWRP splash screen but it reboots right after and this happened even after I flashed (successfully according to Odin) CWM.
It really looks like I did nothing so far but I can assure it's not the first time I use Odin (4 different versions) to flash a custom recovery or a ROM. I did it successfully on other 4 different phones (all samsung).
On this same phone I did it the first time when flashed TWRP in order to root it via recovery.
I have no idea what to do next. I was thinking about using adb in order to wipe all the caches (dalvik included) but it looks like the phone can't be recognized unless I boot it into recovery mode (adb get-state returns "unknown") and I don't think I can do anything in Download mode which is the only mode I can enter apparently.
I was hoping someone here can help me to spare some money buying a new phone for my wife and tossing this one which is the best for its small size imho.
Thank you in advance to anyone interested in at least shading some light on what could have happened. This started to happen out of the blue and the last time I actively modified something (updating the recovery) was almost one year ago... It always worked like a charm until 4 days ago...
EDIT: To clarify: the reason why I posted here is because this looked like a problem the most similar to mine (boot loop or stuck at boot and can't enter either regular or recovery mode). I cannot create new posts due to my low "rank" yet... Please feel free to move this if you think it belongs to a separate thread.

ok so i read all that you have done which is basically everything i would of suggested to you other then could it be the battery may be faulty just random thought noticed you never mentioned trying kies you may have a chance with it beening detected as i see you can enter download mode so that help with odin also kies also have you tried firmware from here sam mobile here T399 or T399N OH2 lastest for tmo and OH3 for metro.
Try to only flash that thru odin i use 3.07 or 3.09 only difference is the pda button changes to AP .works perfect for me so i suggest it then returning back to stock recovery/firmware if it boots then awesome. then return to TWRP 2.8.4.0 beening lastest for this device also needed for CM12 also my projects for device current and future.
when using odin make sure that only “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” options are selected.
also just note when going into twrp release buttons as soon as you see logo otherwise it will continue to boot thru well happens to me when daydreaming lol.
also if your seeing this adb get-state returns "unknown" i believe installing kies may install the drivers for detection im not postive on that but im sure it something to do with missing the adb driver for device maybe another dev can confirm this ?
hopefully this may be of some help i keep on thread to see how the outcome goes
Thanks for the reply DJBoxer!
Regarding the battery it's a new one and I can confirm it's not a battery problem considering that the phone can stay in download mode and unplugged from any power source for very long times without turning off/rebooting and it never failed to keep the charge so far. I also tried with the old battery and the phone behaves exactly the same way.
I used 3 different versions of Odin (1.87, 3.07 and 3.09) with only “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” options selected and every time I got the PASS message even though the phone keeps rebooting after the first reboot once the procedure is terminated.
To clarify one thing : when I said "it shows the TWRP splash screen but it reboots right after and this happened even after I flashed CWM" I meant to point out that it looks odd to see the TWRP splash screen (even for just a few seconds) after I just flashed CWM and that makes me think that I'm really not flashing anything here...
Thank you very much for taking the time of posting the links and I actually didn't try with that latest OH2 version.
I am downloading it right now (it takes a while from sammobile) and I will keep you posted on the outcome.
I will try to flash it via Odin and I'll also try the latest version mentioned on sammobile (Odin3_v3.10.7).
Regarding Kies I wasn't able to have it recognize the phone. I may be missing something but I tried updating drivers and going through all the guided procedures with no luck... If you say it should recognize the phone right away while in download mode then something is amiss.
Could you please confirm that I should also be able to use adb commands with the phone connected via USB in download mode? Cause that doesn't look like the case either...
Thank you again and I'll give updates here about my last attempts.
Sorry for the late reply...
Nothing changed by the way...
I am about to send the phone back to the seller who told me they'll try to fix it. Let's see how it goes.

Help! I think I lost cache or something else!

To make a long story as short as possible, Im on MDK bootloader and I was running stang5liter 5.0 with CWM recovery. I've been bored lately with my phone so I've been flashing a bunch of different roms trying to get the coolest touchwiz rom with most features while using up least amount of system memory as possible (obvioisly). Well I was messing around before attempting to flash Pheonix Rom (ported stang5liter) and I wiped factory reset, cleared cache, dalvik. Then I went into advanced, format system, and then I tried format (sd-ext) which I never have done before and really don't know what it does but figured what heck I'll try it since I've soft bricked this phone multiple times and am fluent at bringing it back to life again. So after I did format (sd-ext) I went to flash rom and clicked on Phoenix Rom zip which I had on my external sd card and pressed "yes flash rom" then CWM looked like it was about to flash but all of a sudden the screen went black and CWM came back to main menu with no flash. I had already wiped the phone so I couldn't reboot to previous system image and of course I didn't have a backup and now I couldn't get CWM to flash any of the rom zips I had on my sd card so I had to ODIN back the emergency sch-i545 mdk tar and everything in Odin seemed like it went just fine. Everything booted up and phone seemed like it was working fine, but. I have noticed big problems since then. 1st thing I noticed was phone getting really hot to the touch, then when I tried to turn it off it shuts down but back key lights and notification light stays on and it never does the final vibrate and turn all the way off, same thing when I try to reboot it just stays like that until I pull batery but it boots back up fine after that. Also I enabled developer options but when I go down and try to open the developer settings in the about phone menu my phone freezes and it will never open. Other little things happen to llike apps FC and sometimes when I open them its like I'm opening it for the first time again line there's no cache memory or something. Then I tried to root again and was successful with towel root and I installed SU and terminal emulator and attempted to flash CWM with loki patch and everything in terminal looks as if it's good and I actually got it to install but when I tried to flash Phoenix Rom again it did the same thing and had to run through the whole Odin process again and now I'm back to the same problems and I'm going crazy trying to find threads with similar problem but have not found anything really at all, can someone please help!
