to directly answer your question, if you did a full restore (system, data and kernel) of android 2.3.3, you'd have a new radio loaded (from OTA) with older system software and kernel (from full restore). not sure that is the most ideal setup, but it is possible.
not sure why you would want to go from 2.3.4 (OTA) back to 2.3.3? partly defeats moving to 2.3.4.
for starters, you'll want to restore the custom recovery, as the OTA will have overwrote that as well as removing the setuid permission on the su binary in /system/bin/su.
to restore the custom recovery, if you haven't already done, you should be able to flash it thru rom manager, as you're still s-off. also can flash it thru the bootloader using the .zip or using my flashimagegui app.
not sure what exactly your goal is or why you're wanting to move back to 2.3.3 after doing the 2.3.4 OTA. hope the information provided helps!

Nothings going to happen.I have all the new updates except hboot.I built a 2.3.4 ROM its quick.but ya know what no over clock yet.so I went back to my 2.3.3 backup of my V6 ROM over clocked to 1.7ghz. I have no issues at all.
I'll go back to 2.3.4 when a oc kernel comes available.

Ok so I tried both ways and get an error that said I need to root my phone so i guess I'm screwed until there's a work around

GingerBlur has nothing wrong with it, but you would imo be better to unlock your bootloader and head on over to GB like most of us and get some of the goodness from the work the devs are doing for it.

Android force closing

Hello all, I just rooted my ota 2.3 EVO using the new revolutionary. I got root, awesome. Did a back up and them tried installing a new Rom. I tried the synergy rc1 and rc2 and after booting either one I get constant Android force closes. Any ideas or maybe the best roms?
I did a search first and found nothing so any help gets a big thank you.

Also, should I stay with 2.3 or use the ruu thing and go back to 2.2?
And yes, I am a root noob
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Did you install an recovery menu? Isnt your evo running revoked root?
I rooted for first time yesterday using the new revolutionary s-off. During root I was prompted to install clock something and did so. I also made a backup that I have used successfully after the failed Rom. I assume I have recover because I can access it from the bootloader

Depends, did you take the OTA or did you install a custom rom to get to 2.3.4. If you took the OTA and you weren't rooted before I don't know if you can go back. The HTC unlocker method of rooting will not let you install a kernel so I don't believe you will be able to flash a 2.3.3 rom since it will require an compatible kernel.
If your on 2.3.4 taking the ota then there is no way to go back to 2.3.3

Yup. You have to have the stock recovery to install though.
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda premium
The phone won't let you install the update until you go back to stock everything (stock ROM, stock apps, stock recovery, stock kernel), so you don't have to worry about accidentally installing the OTA.
Also, once the OTA is installed you can still re-root the phone and install Faux's kernel, so don't worry about that. If you want to bypass all of the entirely, create a nandroid of your current ROM, install Xboarder's pre-rooted ROM and restore your data partition in CWM.

!!!attention!!! If you are hboot 1.50 rooted you do not have to unroot to update

Every thread I see is saying you have to unroot to recieve the ota, which is not true. All you have to do is flash the factory recovery and then update . It updates the radios also

I’m definitely a noob when it comes to this, but I am on HBOOT 1.5 and unlocked my phone via the HTCDev method. But I was able to flash back to the stock recovery, install the OTA update, then flash back to my custom recovery, and flash Superuser again to retain root. Everything worked fine for me.
1. Made a Nandroid backup (just in case)
2. Download and rename the zip file above to PG86IMG.zip, then put it on the root of your SD card
3. Boot into HBoot (this should automatically kick off the installing of the stock recovery zip file)
4. Reboot phone and let it load normally
5. Install OTA update
6. If all goes according to plan and it updates, I remove the PG86IMG.zip off of my SD card
7. Plug in phone and flash twrp through fastboot (follow this guide here)
8. Flash su again to retain root
9. Probably make a Nandroid backup at this point just for fun
10. Reboot my phone and use it like normal with the lastest OTA update.

It should work through fastboot with the recovery.img as well I think. One note that I forgot to mention is that I'm on the Stock ROM as well (as in, after I originally unlocked my phone, all I did was flash a custom recovery ... I've never flashed a custom ROM).
I have hboot 1.5 to and also not working never installed a custom ROM just custom recovery (was only interested in getting titanium backup working). Guess the above steps only work for 1.4 or less?
Just tried your method and still a no go... I'm also on stock rom... After I flash the stock recovery I do the update n it actually starts to install but after the green bar gets a quarter of the way I get the red triangle with the ! In it.... That has happens no matter Wut method I use.... Don't know Wut else to do...

I have hboot 1.5 (and s-on) as well and it worked for me. I was pretty much in the same boat as you with only flashing a custom recovery. Not sure what your problem is. Maybe you could ask a question in the Q&A section and see if you can get some responses.

Not sure what your problem is either. Maybe you flashed something or modified some system file so it can't update?
As far as I can remember I didn't modify anything but then again maybe I did.... Thanks for the help though.... I'll keep trying n see wut I can do

Did you replace your custom recovery with stock one and relock it ?

So I have to relock after I flash stock recovery n then reboot n update?
Edit: I got it.... the problem was that I wasn't on the stock kernel.

Glad you got it working Luda. Did you relock your phone to get it to work, or just flash the stock kernel?
And as a note for others, I'm not sure what method timezone12 did, but for me, I did not relock my phone at any point. In review, I flashed the stock recovery, installed the update, then flashed my custom recovery and superuser again. Nothing was lost on my phone, I still have root on hboot 1.5 with s-on, and I have a working OTA update. One quick note that I wanted to mention is that I didn't use the stock recovery found in this thread (I used one from another thread on xda). This shouldn't matter, but I just wanted to make note of it. A lot of people are saying those in my situation need to relock their phone at some point, but I would respectfully disagree.
Well I'm not 100% sure it was cuz of the kernel but that's my guess. Wut I did was nandroid back to my stock backup I made right after I did the htcdev unlock thing then I flashed the stock recovery then did the update n all went well. So no need to relock and do the ruu thing that's going around these threads.
