What are you guys using to play video to your tv? I have the cable but not the dock. As I understand it, it doesn't make a difference in quality?
Is there a certain set-up for the best quality or just go with the Mirroring option that pops up on the phone? With the tv being a better display, I wanted to clarify if mirroring was exact or can the phone output a higher quality than the screen on the phone is capable.
Apps of choice?
Thanks guys!

To me same rez when I mirror it I have a 42in and it looks just like the phone does but bigger
I tried with my cable which works for EVO. Gallery and mirror both works in landscape and portrait mode. However, the resolution is the same or even worse than the phone screen. My EVO does better for picture slide show.
The HDMI mirroring uses a resolution of 1280x1024 according to my monitor's "info" box. This is approximately 1280x720 (aka "720p") except in 4:3 aspect ratio. I suspect this is upscaled from the phone display's native resolution though.
hdmi not working
I just purchased an hdmi cable plugged into the back of the tv and to my phone and I am not getting anything except the Motorla symbol. Any suggestions.

I'm with you. I wanted to use a PC monitor for Remote Desktop control of a couple of PCs and servers with the TP2 (as I do with the Athena). Using the TP video out and converter cables will have the cables outweigh the phone by a factor of about 2 to 1.
I believe the output on the Blackstone is composite, not component in which case I don't think that would work.
Although you can get active converters to convert composite video to VGA/RGBHV, there will be a considerable loss of quality, especially in the fine detail. Basically, it will look very blurry.
There's plenty of them on Ebay, search for EXTUSB video , or "Touch pro video"
Yep, bought one of those composite/VGA converter boxes and can definitely confirm the loss of quality/bluriness. Also too bulky to carry around conveniently and requires a power supply. Hooked my Archos up yesterday (TP2 arrived today...!) just to remind myself, as it has the same screen res and also outputs via composite and apart from it being blurry, the image also flickers, which is quite annoying. Hadn't really noticed it before, cause it's not that noticable when watching video, but when viewing text or a presentation, that would be seriously off-putting! May just be my converter box, but thinking about the conversions the signal has to go through, I can't belive other converters are going to be much better.
BO$$
"Reqiures powersupply" ?
I cannot remeber that I used power supply with it, but yes, it does have a power-supply connector to allow charging while using tv-out.
Appologies, I was posting without properly referencing the post I was replying to.
I was relpying to crypticalpha's post, regarding composite to VGA converters. My converter box requires a powersupply in order to output a picture on the monitor/projector, else you can only get sound.
Since I have not yet held my TP2 in my hands, nor owned the TP1, I cannot comment on its TV out functionality.
I had assumed the phone itself would not be required to be connected to a power source, but it is actually good to hear that confirmed!
Kind Regards

i think this one does work. and its cheap aswell

I bought a HTC adaptor for charging & 3.5 headphones etc. Then I thought I'd be clever and save money and use a Nokia N95 TV out cable, but when I plug it in the TP2 sees it as Headphones.
Any ideas of how to get it working?

I can vouch for this being a good, cheap TV out cable; I bought it and it works well - the USB and 3.5mm jacks also work so you can plug a secondary sound source in or charge / sync it as well as using the TV out functionality.
One 'problem' though: using Core Player without the TV cable, the video playback is smooth as a baby's bum: with the TV out cable, it's slightly choppy. Is this to be expected or does anyone know how to improve video playback through TV cable? If so, it makes a great solution to travelling and being able to bring good TV and films with you on the phone!
Gents I bought a generic POWERED MHL cable and when I plug it into the S2 WiFi won't connect anymore to my network. What gives? I have googled a bit and seen a few issues regarding it, not sure if more have had the issue. I wonder if this is a software or hardware issue. I have 4 days to return this phone if it is a hardware issue.
Anyone else have the same issue? TV signal shows up fine.
In general section someone has this same problem. I believe they said it was a tethering issue so you might have to root
yup i saw that and posted. i called samsung. according to them when plugging in an MHL adapter it disables wifi (even though you may still see the wifi icon) so that it doesnt cause jerkiness of ur picture
Hmm... I'll need to retry. I know cell data worked fine. Will try wifi-only.
Did you get it figured out? I ordered up one last week and should have it tomorrow. I was looking forward to being able to stream netflix.
What I would like to know before I spend the money on the official Samsung one if it would do the same thing.

Wifi works fine with my MHL adapter connected. There is a small overscan issue but nothing I can't work with (my screen is 1:1 ratio so it's the adapter or the phone output). Both the laptop and the phone reported the same external ip.
Using this MHL adapter - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA07R0608256
P.S. - I just checked (10/29 - 5pm EST) and it did 1080i output. Not 1080p like some suggest but it may not do that until an actual 1080p video is played. Mine was 1280x960 resolution. There were two other interesting observations made that I thought were good when the MHL adapter was connected.
(Inline edits below)
(Clarification: Below observations are during video playback using the Video app only!)
1) During video playback TV does output 1:1 resolution (no overscan issue)
2) TV doesn't mirror phone display. Just renders playback so you can use the phone like a remote.
3) Screen doesn't turn off automatically during TV out playback.
Now then the above are for the video app and just to put minds at ease here are for everywhere else.
1) Screen may overscan but it may be resolution or screen ration differences between phone and tv. Mine is 1920x1080 native.
2) The TV will mirror the phone display so you can play your games and what not on the TV (like in the youtube videos showing off the adapters)
(End Inline Edits)
Now then samsung's claim about studdering during MHL TV out? That sounds like bs. I checked cpu usage during the mkv decoding work and it was at 25% at the highest point and that was done by the mediaserver process. The tvoutserver used less than 2% cpu time to do it's work. I connected via adb over wireless which would of been only possible if wifi was working.

You can't mirror the phone's display? What if I wanted to play a game on my TV - not possible? Does the hdmi out only display video playback?
I just got mine today. It mirrors the display on the phone. It works really well. Picture is way better than the RCA hookup i had for my cappy. WiFi works too. I am watching breaking bad on netflix. Works awesome.
Here is the one I got:

I was specifically referring to the video app that's included on the phone (the samsung one). It mirrored the display everywhere else including in games so everything that showed on the phone showed on the TV.

I didn't know that. Thats pretty sweet. You can plug the phone in, set it down and control everything with the tv remote? How does that work if you have to touch the screen to select stuff. That would be worth the extra cash for the samsung one over the cheap ones.

You can use navigation keys from the TV remote to navigate through the phone home pages and program list and select apps with the "Select" button on the remote, but it is impossible to select apps from the dock. It's not as fast as the touch screen , but it is manageable. My Sony TV is two years old, but works well with the Samsung MHL adapter. I borrowed one from my coworker to try, now I'm looking for a good online deal.

I'm the poster in the General forum with this issue. I have the monoprice adapter, and it disables my wifi.
That was stock, so I rooted the phone to disable any tethering app, and wifi is still disabled....did you have to do anything to get this to work?
This is really strange....maybe I should return the monoprice one and get the newegg one.

I didn't do anything special. Just plugged it in. They had a couple different ones on monoprice. Did you get the same one I linked? It is the only one that says it will work with the sgs2. Mine works great and the picture quality is pretty good. I would try and just exchange it.

Hey guys,
just got today my mhl-hdmi-adaptor from samsung, works pretty good and is sharp as hell, but give always a signal of 1080i out. My problem is, that my tv is natively 720p capable and if I try to get the stuff from my sgs3 to the tv, it is oversized, so not 100% of the screen is displayed on tv.
I was looking at the settings for possible solutions, but there is nothing with tv out or something like that.
I would like to change the output resolution to 720p so I can use it better.
Does anybody have the same problem or knows a solution for that?
thx

I think the MHL can only output 1080i... everyone that says they are outputting 1080p is mistaken... correct me please if I'm wrong but every single device I've tried from brand new TVs, to old ones, to monitors and projectors only outputs 1080i
I see no one will help with sub ;(

have you checked if there are "overscan" settings on your tv? See if you can go in to the TV settings and turn overscan off.

Thats incorrect, my phone is outputting 1080p, which is actually not what i want it to do, i'd prefer 720p at 60hz, it's the 30hz which is killing it.
I posted these questions in AT/T forum but got no answer probs due to lack of consumers actually using the official adaptor, so would love to ask u guys here since im really aiming at using the cable for presentations etc (and spent 50 dollars on it);
1) How do i fix the borders cut off in landscape mode when connected to TV?? If u look at youtube videos every user regardless of TVs have the screen bit cut off even thou phone's resolution is 16:9 720p?
2) Why does it display in 1080p not 720p (screen on galaxy s3 is 720p)? (my laptop using same hdmi cable without adaptor shows as 720p on TV) id like to be able to adjust it
3) My galaxy s3 heats up to 55 Celsius when playing with the phone and mirroring games. Is this normal? (although my alienware laptop heats up same also when connected to TV)
4) There is a abit of a lag between TV and a phone, the phone also seems to lag more when connected to TV (my laptop doesnt experience this)
Bump
Most TVs default mode is to cut off the borders, I find that odd with HDTV because it's digitial. With the analog TVs they would cut off a little border because the edges of the signal weren't always of the best quality, and it makes the picture look a little "bigger" too. On my Samsung TV there is a "P.Size" button (picture size I presume), and I push that until "screen fit" comes up, which shows the full image. On other TVs I've heard using the HDMI port labeled for PC/laptops will come by default setup to not cut the borders, if it's not labeled that way it's normally the port that shares or is right next to the DVI port.
I have the 1080p display issue with the horrible lag as you've seen. If you come across a solution let me know, because it drives me nuts and some games are basically unplayable which is one of the major reasons I got my MHL adapter. For videos and web it works well enough, since a video isn't interactive you don't notice the delay.
The heating up is probably normal, a phone a very dense compared to a PC and doesn't have fans like a PC has, and I bet the display cloning and charging takes up a bit of power.
Just got my new sammy tv with mhl support and more stuff, but have the same problem as you guys. Choppy playback at 1080p30, that really sucks. It shall be at 1080p60. I will give it a try with the other 2 hdmi slots, maybe it will work then. If not, I'm screwed and have to sell my hdmi-mhl-adaptor -.-'''
Really not cool and I cant explain it to myself, why it shouldnt work ((

It seems max output is 1080p30, yet the phone is really nice and smooth on a tv with 720p or 1080i, as it's 60hz. Really annoying that there aren't any settings for the HDMI output to simply select an output resolution!
This seems to be a very odd bug. If I connect the tablet to a 720p Sony Bravia TV, it falls back to 480p only, which looks awful. However, if I connect it to another Samsung TV, also 720p only, it outputs in HD just fine. This happens when using same good quality Motorola cable.
Is there any way I can force the Nexus to output in 720p? I'm sure the TV and cable support it. Or is there any other workaround?
actually whats even more weird is that I thought its supposed to output to 1080p. but I haven't checked myself.
It does output at 1080p but the OP's TV is only 720p.
To the OP: I don't believe that there is a way to force the output resolution but try looking on the TV end in the settings.
Funny, I have the same exact issue with the same exact TV. Sony Bravia 46" 720p TV. It's a pretty old TV compared to today's standards.
It only outputs to 480p, and the TV has absolutely no overscan settings. It looks like crap. It works fine on my ASUS 24" computer monitor, as well as a brand new Vizio 60" 1080p TV.
Then again, I also have overscan issues with this TV when outputting my laptop to it via HDMI. Maybe it's just too old. :crying:
After seeing this post I remembered I had a HDMI cable from my Motoroloa xt720 (great phone) so dug it out, plugged it in and it works perfectly, 1080p, only small issue is a little bit cut off the screen at the top and bottom But this is only half of the status bar and a little bit of the navigation buttons at the bottom. My TV is a 2011 LG47lw45ou. Must be a TV issue. Going slightly off the subject.. after doing this I decided to plug in a wired Xbox controller using an otg cable to see if I could play the games on the tablet through my TV... it worked straight away with onlive, no controller mapping required at all, bonus!

Have a look through your picture size modes, you should have an exact scan setting that will display the full screen.
