[Q] Keep or Return (EVO View) - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

So since Sprint makes it far too easy to return these things before 30 days is up... the question is keep or return. I like it. I just am getting a bit concerned I will like it for 2 years!
I hear conflicting info/opinions in regards to a v3.2 upgrade. I also am having issues with certain apps just not working (HBO GO, certain games not using the screen real estate because of bad programming).
So the general question is... if all of you ahd the option to keep or return... what would you do? Should I return and get Puccini? Its a question I ask daily.

Do you get answers daily?
Seriously, there are already several threads exactly like this.
If you are going to have buyers remorse every time there a "new model of the year", you may as well not buy anything, because that is always going to happen. Its the treadmill of technology.
If, on the other hand, you want to use an awesome device NOW instead of waiting around for an upcoming device that does not even have a release date, then keep the View.
Besides, have you used any Honeycomb tablets? They are all disappointingly laggy compared to the Flyer. HC has some nice features, but Gingerbread is faster and smoother. I'm not so sure I want HC on my Flyer, at least not in its present state.
Also the 7" form factor versus the 10" one is a completely different feel. The 10" ones are much heavier and much less portable. Check some out at the store, to see if you even like them. More screen real estate can be nice for couch surfing. But for portability, the Flyer is superior. Personally, I also tend to prefer the smaller form factor for general use, which is very easy to hold with one hand. But its largely a matter of personal taste and preference.

I actually looked and didn't really see what I was looking for which is I why I asked. The reason I got it was BECAUSE of the 7 inch size which I find much better than 10 inch.
My biggest issue has been the applications either missing (netflix (sideloaded), facebook) or not working (hbo go, some games).
All in all I like it. I think $399 is a good deal for it considering it has the wifi/3g/4g & pen input (a major plus) & 32gig of space.
Just wanted to make sure there wasn't somethign I was missing. I've checked on HTC Flyer forums across the net and most of them (except this one) seem pretty dead... which was a bit of a scare as well.

These threads are a bit old, but contain plenty of arguments for keeping the View/Flyer which may set your mind at ease:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109074&highlight=galaxy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165803
And honestly, I would not even worry about keeping the device for 2 years. I personally seem to be on a 1 year cycle with smartphones, and other folks on here buy phones much more frequently than that. I'm probably going to plan on a similar 1-year cycle with my tablet. Heck, some people upgrade devices as often as they change underwear!

I've never tried to get out of a Sprint contract with a year left on the contract. Maybe its easier than I assume.

So, it's not so much whether or not you like the Flyer, but whether you want that 2 year contract? I'd be with you on that. Perhaps return it and buy a Wi-Fi only unit?

Good point. I do like the 3g enabled part, though. That's one of the main things I like about the iPad... 3g without a contract.

Buy a WiFi Flyer and activate tethering on your phone.

Starting today, Sprint customers have the option to pay for data access on the Sprint 3G and 4G networks using the HTC EVO View tablet by the day, week or month with no long-term contract. Customers can choose the 3G/4G Day, Week or Month pass that fits their needs:
Day: $14.99 for 150 MB of on-network usage in a 24-hour period (includes 50 MB off-network roaming usage)
Week: $29.99 for 500 MB of on-network usage in a 7-day period (includes 100 MB off-network roaming usage)
Month: $49.99 for 1.5 GB of usage in a 30-day period (includes 150 MB off-network roaming usage)
These options are available for both businesses and consumers.
And there are no overage charges to worry about. Once you hit your data limit, or the end of your day, week or month, the data access automatically turns off.

In that case, $399 for an Evo View isn't a bad deal, seeing as how you don't ever have to actually use the data plan if you don't want.

I never said anything about getting out of any contracts. I was thinking you can someday upgrade to another Sprint device and pay full the unsubsidized price for it, and keep the existing contract. Or buy a device from a 3rd party, if Sprint will let you switch service to that device. Not sure how WiMax works on Sprint. I'm used to the GSM/HSPA phone service I have on AT&T. I can buy a phone anywhere, as long as its compatible with AT&T's network and unlocked; and just slip my SIM into it and use it on my existing contract.

I think the main point is how you want to use your tablet. You want to use it at home or outdoor, on the go? Do you prefer mobility over big screen or in another word do you want to carry a bag for your tablet all the time you are out or not?
I bought the Flyer because I like the 7 inch size portability ( I had an Archos 70 IT). I would like to use the tablet for ebook reading, web surfing, stylus sometimes for taking notes and diagrams at work, ... Right now, Dual core is not really effective and Honeycomb might look a bit nicer than GB but the performance is worse. HTC also promised to update the Flyer to Honeycomb later, which I would expect in next 2-3 months.
In your case, because you are thinking about buying a 3G version tablets, I guess you would like to use it a lot on the go. So it seems that 7 inch tablets suit you better.
Technology is developing very fast. You will never know what will come out in 2 years time. So it's better to know what to expect from your tablet in +-1 year. Then you probably won't be very much disappointed.

[Q] So torn!!!

I don't know how many of you have been in the same boat (or care, really) but I am just so torn as to what to do!! I have been with t-mobile for the last 10 years and haven't had too many problems other than small hiccups from time to time. And I got onto their no roaming charges plan fairly early on after i signed up. I don't travel very often, but it was nice to not worry about roaming charges. I would always look at verizon and see that they charged roaming fees and were generally more expensive than what I had. Then I got my first smart phone in 2006 and was hooked! However, t-mobile was pretty late in the game as far as 3G speeds were concerned, especially in my area. And sometimes, the "3G" speeds really suck!! Tho I have compared against people with AT&T and verizon, and when I have 3G speeds on my phone, they tend to be faster. Hell, I can even stream netflix movies through my phone! But now with the onset of 4G, verizon seems to be in a good position. Tho I just read that Salt Lake wasn't going to get complete LTE coverage until the end of the year. Which kind of bites. Anyway I am kind of wanting to jump ships now, however I would have to cut my allowed minutes in half (to 450), and service would STILL cost like 10-15 dollars more per month than what I already pay. But I really do have my eye on the thunderbolt. I have gone in like 3 times to the verizon store to play with it. I am a little bit concerned with battery life, and I don't want to pay extra for 2 GB worth for tethering. Yes, I understand you can root and put new ROMs on the device, but that process still confuses the crap out of me since I have never done it before. The other thing that i get stuck on is that I am a terrible decision maker, so I am kind of scared of making a bad move and regretting it (like buying an HD2.) So I guess that my question is (especially for you former t-mobile customers) is why do you like verizon? I'm not asking you to convince me to switch, I just want to know why you like verizon. Is there a reason you don't like verizon? I don't think I need to ask why you like or dislike the thunderbolt, since I have found plenty of posts for that. But hopefully a few of you will give your two cents
Well, from what I can say, I'd honestly say that if you main concern is speed, verizon is the way to go, if you lookin for a balance, maybe look into sprint. They have 4g phones (the evo, and the evo shift) being almost the same as the inc I just owned (I ran an evo rom, radios, and battery), as they have decent prices and coverage and 4g. T mobile I have never used or been a fan of, but if they work, why change? They will catch up in a bit I'm sure. I've always been with Verizon as I'm on someones plan, and could never afford the insane rates myself. really though I'l check to see what you need, what you want, and what you can afford. Assuming sprint is good in your area, I'd highly suggest an eve/evo shift as a balance, but I can't really give you a definite answer. I have a thunderbolt as of he last few days and like it. I can't say I love it even with the 4G speeds being impressive at the moment. Just waiting for some more hackers and HTC to give us the code we need then I may love it.
Hope that helps a bit and I didn't bore you.
I moved over from AT&T this past summer because well I really don't like AT&T and even as a priority customer on an iPhone I had terrible coverage/service. I made the move to Verizon initially for the superior network/service. I am paying significantly more as I'm no longer on a family plan w/ my brother who didn't want to leave his iPhone...
And if you do come to Verizon by the time the free mobile hotspot promo ends I'm quite sure the hacker/developer community will have greatly simplified the rooting process and there will be custom roms/kernels to optimize power. If not the extended battery add on doesn't cost too much and doesn't add to much to the overall size, I grabbed it for those days I'm traveling. And there are tethering options that don't require monthly payments/limits that don't require root.
I'm loving my thunderbolt, though I agree w/ kdb424 I'm looking forward to some further development on the custom roms/kernels front. I only have rooted currently to get rid of the bloatware & access to the root apps, but can't wait to have some more custom roms to play with. But well currently seemingly the community is waiting for HTC to release the kernel source.
But again I love Verizon for the service/quality of network/helpful employees & I am definitely liking the thunderbolt even though it is a significant change in size from my Droid Incredible.
Holy massive block of text!
I would recommend checking out which carrier best serves your personal needs. Verizon is a little pricey if you cannot get any sort of discount (through work, family, etc.)... but they also have amazing coverage and an impressive start on their 4G LTE network.
I understand why you may not want Verizon though. Sprint is a tad more affordable and can offer great devices and service depending on your area.
I was with TMobile for about 8 years before switching to Verizon a week ago (relocated for work and had no data coverage with TMobile at my new location).
Well I have looked at the options. I might get a new job in Elko, Nevada in which case only Verizon and AT&T have any decent coverage. This is also another reason why i ask. And I doubt Elko would be getting 4G any time soon.
Oh, decisions decisions!!

Tbolt vs Sensation

Given same costs, which would you prefer?
I originally wanted to go to the Sensation, and I waited for it. But, lukewarm initial reviews, $5 more a month for a limited 2GB data cap (vs unlimited and LTE on VZW), and a more active development community with the Thunderbolt convinced me to change my order to VZW.
However, considering the terrible battery life of the Thunderbolt, the fact that I don't get LTE in my office or at home (1x and 3G are my normal connections), and the Tbolt being slightly inferior in the hardware department, I am thinking that i should switch back to the Sensation idea. I get 20% discount with Verizon, versus 12% on Tmobile.
I want to trust that upcoming Gingerbread ROMs for Thunderbolt will result in a better product on a faster network. I'm just somewhat underwhelmed with the Tbolt after a week.
Thoughts?
personally, i would look at it like this
1. what carrier has stronger signal strength where you are
2. LTE vs Hardware. your either going to get amazing download and upload speeds when LTE finally rolls out in your area and imo its amazing + its unlimited if you are grandfathered in; or you can get slightly improved specs which honestly, wont really matter in day to day usage. The only differences you'll really see are when you play high end games or something like that.
3. Which phone has a more developed community. As far as i know, the thunderbolt has a huge community just like the original incredible. Even now, after so many years the incredible is still getting roms. I saw a sense 3.0 rom on an incredible!
sooo up to you lol. your going to be using the phone not me :]
You know I was at the same exact crossroads. I just came off of my 2 year contract with T-Mobile and I was pondering buying the Sensation or switching to Verizon (which has much better coverage in my area). I like the Sensation just a tad better due to its dual core processor and how much shimmer it is. This goes without saying, the Sensation is one sexy phone. It all came down to the carrier for me. In my house I would average 1-2 bars. So I went with VZW and the Thunderbolt. Honestly I love the Thunderbolt. It's great. For you, I would say go with the carrier that has better service in your area which I believe is safe to say Verizon.

if you don't get Ltd where you are most I would go with the sensation
Yeah, it is completely a coin toss. Look at the development community here vs. Sensation, the Tbolt is much more active.
Considering the hell that an AT&T buyout would bring to Atmosphere, I'd be far happier stuck on VZW for two years.
If I can just work around this battery misery, I think the Tbolt will be fine.

Sensation looks pretty sweet. If Verizon had it in their line up it would be a top choice.
Agreed with everybody else. Depends on the carrier. If no LTE get the sensation.
T-Mobile will throttle down your data after you hit the 2GB ceiling, get Verizon before the 7th of July and you're locked in with unltd data with no cap or throttle, be it 3G or LTE. Even if you don't have LTE yet, you will eventually. The majority of features on a smartphone use network data, so all the memory and processing power technology has to offer means absolutely **** when your data stinks.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
If you don't get LTE in your area, download LTE On/Off or a similar program and switch to CDMA Auto. This will greatly improve your battery life.
I would take a not-so-hot device on Verizon's 4G any day over a "hot device" on a non Verizon carrier any day!!
Plus, the TB is definitely hot
Let me offer my feelings, because I have just completed the exact same journey you are embarking on, meaning I had a Sensation on Tmo, and just witched to VZW for the Thunderbolt. Here are my impressions:
HTC Sensation 4G:
I used to be on my company's corporate plan with blackberrys but recently accepted a new job, which allowed me to get whatever phone/carrier I wanted. I had used Tmobile years ago and did the whole HTC HD2 custom ROM thing and had a really good time with it. The sensation always claimed to be on 4g mode and I got relatively good speeds. I could always stream music/videos without any delay, and Speedtest would report about 3mbps on average, with a peak of 8 on a couple of occasions. Coverage was excellent & no dropped calls.
The phone itself is a work of art. It's very light, had outstanding battery life under heavy usage, and Sense 3.0 is beautiful. The tweaked functionality of the camera app among other things was nice. My favorite feature of course being free built in hotspot/tethering. However something was missing.
I really missed the screensize of the HD2. While both are 4.3" diagonal, the S4G has a higher aspect ratio, so the phone is actually skinnier. I didnt like this. I really liked how readable text was on my HD2, and the proximity of icons/buttons when texting were. All in all, the HD2 was simply the perfect size for me.
Then I went to a VZW store and made then unbox a thunderbolt for me so I could try it out without those security wires attached to it. I immediately fell in love and knew within seconds that this was the phone for me. I ran out the buyers remorse period on tmobile just to make sure, and finally made the switch on Monday! I cant tell you how pleased I am. The phone just feels right in my hands.
Every time I used the S4G I was constantly judging it for its screensize. This was a huge bummer, because I could never enjoy the phone. Every time I picked it up all I could think about was how much more smushed and how much scrolling I needed to do to get the same screen real estate visible on the Thunderbolt.
Thoughts on the Thunderbolt:
People arent lying, the battery life is borderline abysmal, but this is actually fine with me since I work behind a desk. I am actually charging it via USB as we speak. I'll probably also plug it into my car charger so it's boosted by the time I get home. I seem to get about 4-6 hours of heavy usage out of it (I was recording myself giving seminars this morning, then surfing all through lunch using the kickstand). I dont mind the battery life since I can easily keep it juiced, but I would NEVER recommend this phone for anyone on the go.
The only thing I actually dont like is how bulky the phone is. Even my HD2 was slimmer/lighter. Maybe its the LTE modem, or maybe it's the kickstand, but the phone feels fat in my hand. In fact, I've basically traded one nuisance for another, nagging on the S4G due to size, and nagging on the TB due to weight. Time will tell if I begin to regret my decision, but I think the other benefits will make up for it.
On TMO, within my first week on the S4G I had already used 1gb. Granted I was playing around with it a bit more than usual, but still. I think we're all gonna hit 2GB a lot sooner than we realize, and the carriers on banking on this (hence the reason they made them). Having 100% unlimited grandfathered 4G with the TB was probably my second biggest selling point. I dont like using a phone and constantly checking the MyAccount app, or 3g watchdog to determine how close I am to running over. It kinda sours the whole experience. With the TB I can just kick back relax and know I'll never be bothered with it.
And speaking of bulk/kickstand issues, I just want to say how AWESOME this kickstand is. I am constantly using it (even though it's only been 3 days lol). I love being able to stand it up and flick through web pages with 1 finger while I eat a sandwich or pasta or something at work. I'm really shocked they arent doing this will all their phones now.
Oh yeah, one other thing, performance. Believe it or not, but the TB actually feels snappier to me running Froyo than the S4G. Dual core or not, the S4G's framerate when switching homescreens always had a little choppiness to it. This really blows and feels like you're using a bogged down phone. The TB always has wonderfully smooth transitions. Obviously this is due to lack of 3d fx, but I'd rather have a smooth simply interface than a clunky advanced one. The only feature of Sense 3.0 I actually used was the lockscreen widget. It's pretty hand to be able to open emails/sms messages from here, but it really only saves you from 1 extra step when you use a standard lockscreen. All the other upgrades apps were pretty useless. Yeah the new weather widget is awesome and I would just stare and stare at it for minutes at a time. That was on my first day. On the 2nd day I never even noticed it. I even used the weather as my wallpaper, and still I didnt notice it.
P.S. I was really nervous about this whole ATT thing too. ATT has given some blanket statement that existing 4g users on Tmo's network will be "given an opportunity to upgrade" or something along those lines. Basically you WILL have to get a new phone eventually. LTE is NOT what Tmo is using, and ATT wants that spectrum baaaaad. Believe me, once it's theirs they are going to use it, and completely redeploy it for real 4G as they can. If you're LUCKY, they MIGHT do it in a series of phaseouts, letting users of phones like the S4G exhaust their contracts before each little piece of spectrum is gobbled up and transformed into LTE space. And thats assuming they're going to play nice, and since when has ATT ever played nice? ATT is always the first carrier to impose some asinine rules or restrictions on their services. They are the last company I would trust to be fair and not just force me to renew my contract in 13 months or be dumped to 2g speeds forever.
Hope that helps!
Verizon + Unlimited 4G LTE on the Thunderbolt can't be beat.
Thank you very much for taking the time to write that up, RunNGun!
You've hit upon many of my concerns and observations. I was actually thinking that the Sensation's aspect ratio difference and smaller size would be a positive for me. the Thunderbolt with a silicone bumper case feels as massive as the old Apple Newton I had in 1994.
But, I'm a relatively substantial guy at six feet and 215lbs, so it's not overwhelmingly large. I think that the 4" AMOLED of the Samsung Galaxy S line is the sweet spot for me. but, when I had one on AT&T, I returned it within three weeks. And I am glad that I did.
I'm getting about the same battery that you are. I also have USB at work and chargers all over the house, cars and motorcycles so I'm quite covered for applying power. I might get 8 hours on the stock battery, with wifi off and green power on.
I'm holding off the root and flash until I am out of return period and whatever upgrade that may come has been seen. I did port over my TMobile number that I've had since 1998, so I am pretty much sold on the Tbolt. i did a Speedtest in the car at a stoplight the other day and got 30mbit! And, I've already burned through 5+ Gigs of data just letting the bloatware do its thing and playing some Pandora.
I had a very good experience with Tmobile on my old Nokia 5800. But that sucked so badly for data services, that i only had text and voice on it. However, i could always make a call, where my GF on iPhone 4 has about a 50/50 chance of getting service or an inbound call.
I've also had good experiences with VZW in the past, but CDMA is such dead tech, it is hard to buy into it in 2011. I'd prefer a true world phone for my travels.
Cheers again for a great synopsis.
So you got the TB then? I have to agree with you about CDMA, but with a carrier as big and powerful as VZW I guess it doesnt really matter, they've certainly proven that it is a reliable platform and they can do great things with it. I wish I could use my phone overseas too, but at least I'll always have my wife's HD2 which is GSM for those occasions.
BTW I forgot to mention that my battery life is stifled from use of bluetooth a lot. I basically leave bluetooth on 24/7, GPS too, even though I'm not really using GPS that much. I dont actually shut off the radio. WiFi is always off. The first day I actually got 12 hours out of it before charging, because I was just too busy to play with it. Hard to say what my ultimate average will really be.

This tablet is sexy and all... but who the f*ck is gonna buy it?

Seriously, the price is way too high.. 600 dollars is the most I'd pay for a tablet. How many here actually bought it?
If they release it internationally, I would. Sans the contract, of course. The pricing is not too far off the 32GB iPad 2 3G, but the Jetstream has the pen AND SD slot. If this ever comes out WiFi only, I'm sure to get it.
The only real problem I see is the contract pricing from AT&T. Thats way too high for a 2-year contract.

I'm seriously contemplating it...
$699 for a 32 gig tab is more than any other Android tab out there but considering it is expandable up to as large an SD card as you want to put in it... 32g more at this point and it comes with the pen right now which is an $80 accessory.... not that bad. Also when you compare it to the same size iPad2 it is actually less money by $30 and $130 less than the 64g iPad2. I already pay $50 a month for an unlimited aircard so downgrading and then pimping off my Android phone for additional airtime when not on wifi will take care of that.

I agree with you.... I had a Dell Streak 7 and an iPad WiFi + 3G 64GB. I sold both of them and got this tablet and I haven't looked back. I love it, just needs to be rooted. I was paying $25 for the 2GB iPad plan, changed it to the $35 3GB plan - service discount = $28 and change. so for a few bucks more a month it was worth it.
- Dan
It's only $50 more than the 32GB GT 10.1 LTE on VZW and AT&T's data plan is cheaper. The GT 3G I'm importing from the UK is actually more expensive. They all get pricy once you include a data connection.
Yep,despite all the hype that it was outrageously pricey, I didn't see a glaringly high difference than the iPad 2 in price, and I like the way it feels.
I would like to see it rooted and get a decent case for it, though....
Its a sweet tab. I bought it, love it. Price wasn't an issue as the jetstream has all the features I want. This is much better than the iPad
I wont pay that much for it, specially because I don't use the internal connection..
I like it but I'll wait for a wifi only version, or for att finally realize is to expensive and decrease the price..
It's funny to me so many sites, people, articles, etc...getting stuck on the price. Yes, it's expensive! It's almost the same price as the Xoom was, and the ipad 2 (depending on type and version of course).
I'm very impressed thus far with the quality of this tablet and what it offers for me. This is an extremely better buy (for the $ spent) then ipad, Xoom, Acer, etc in my opinion.

i wanted one but just picked up a Transformer a few minutes ago for $390 @ Best Buy. I couldn't justify the extra 300 when i could get another Transformer for almost the difference.
Jetstream
Bought, love it....not worried about the price.
Have been an IPAD user since it came out....love it but really cant do anything with it except surf the web and look at some photos.
The Jetstream is expensive but when I looked at the 64gb Ipad @ we were in the same ballpark and it lack many of the features I wanted.
PLUS, it's just like my phone. Not sure if anyone has really mentioned this advantage but it's very familiar to my rooted inspire running RC mix Kingdom 3d...
I love knowing how to use the thing out of the box...
Now, I just need to figure out how to get on my VPN at work!
You can get the Jetstream for $549 with a 2 year contract!
I ordered mine last week from AT&T. When you order the 3Gig LTE Data plan with a 2 year commitment you get the Jetstream for $549.00 before tax.

That is nice hut how you did it because I was seeing to order it online without contract and it says the prices mentioned before and it even obligate you to get a data plan?
Does the means that I could get it no contract for $699? If so, i am in.
I already bought an HTC Flyer earlier this year, which is $499 for a 16 GB, 7" tablet, plus $80 for the pen. I'm quite happy with it. If not for already owning the Flyer, I would seriously consider the Jetstream. But I'm not sure if I would get the data plan, or buy it at full retail price (and use it as a WiFi-only device).
Obviously, what you feel about the price depends a whole lot on your financial situation and personal budget. For me, spending a couple extra hundred bucks for something I really want is reasonable. I have a personal soft spot for HTC devices. For me, devices made by other manufacturers really tend to not compare to HTC's build quality. For that, I would happily pay extra. That's the philosophy I had when buying the Flyer. There are plenty of cheaper 7" tablets around. But its not necessarily a good "value" if you save some money on a tablet, but don't really like the device you bought. But of course, a lot of this depends on personal preferences, as well.
And yes, I don't even own this device, but I'm still poking around this subforum out of envy!
Hey guys I'm seriously considering purchasing it but I live in India but that can be taken care of as the US mail forwarding service I use also has a BuyForMe sub-service where they buy the product for me... but in this case since at&t requires a SSN for the compulsory cancel-anytime data plan with the no-contract offering of this tablet, I'm having a tough time getting my hands on this awesome-elegant HTC
tab. So my questions are-
1) Will the developer community at any point in time work on getting it SIM unlocked? Or is it better to wait for a version that will not be bound to AT&T?
2) If any of my dear fellow members will be so kind so as help me somehow (read: above) with getting my hands on this beauty? Can you use a friends' SSN to buy a thing for yourself?

After a lot of , reviews and reaserch I had to deside for the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Honestly I didnt find a fair reason to spend $350 more for the htc, plusethe GT is lighterand thin.

Me too! I'm still considering getting one. Taking the Flyer out and leaving the jetstream home (off contract) as a couchsurfer would rule. Especially because notes sync.

Meh, it's only money. You can't take it with you.
Besides, this thing is a beast. Super fast, both processor and network speed. You can download ICE Films right to the device in less than 5 minutes. Come on, what can be better.

Nice to be an american with AT&T LTE dataplan! In russia this thing will cost at least 2000$ (after a couple of weeks of sales) and will be available in 4-6 months...
If anyone can help me with a little explanation, on how to actually buy it without dataplan (since no commitment also includes some kind of plan) and registration, i would really appreciate.
Several things this device lacks at the moment - SIM unlock, voice calls capability and S-OFF...
Give it a.little time Grayhardt.

Nomophobia?

Nomophobia, as in "No mobile phone phobia!" I found this article interesting because, 1. Its definately me. 2. The one chick checks her phone 50 times a day? Please, Im triple that easy!!!!90% of the time im awake, Im on my phone! News, Facebook, bank, XDA, text, 401K, ZumoCast to my home computer, Playstation Network! I can go on forever!
http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2...our-cellphone-nomophobia-on-the-rise#comments
yep, i got it. and it drags me away from my PC more and more every day as they become more powerful. i mean really, there is not much technology out there that is more handy then a smartphone. i cant read the news for hours on less then 2000mAh on my laptop, but i can on my phone!
and 50 times... i get more then 100 text messages a day, plus 30-50 emails, then phones calls and internet surfing... yeah i def beat her mark of 50. i use my phone as my clock, it would be interesting to see how many times i do turn my screen on. im guessing id be well over 400.
@lroy, I'm probally in the 400+ range also. And speaking of computer, I was just telling guest Sunday, I could not tell you the last time I physically sat at my desk at home or moved that laptop off the coffee table. (She asked could she have it!). The only reason my desktop is powered on is I use ZumoCast when I'm out to access it! Hell, I even program my cable box when I want to see something and I know I will not make it home!
I wanted to bring this back to the front. Last week a friend mentioned she could not take pictures, I replaced 2Gb Card with 16Gb Card for $19.99. Same friend came over and told me she could not send text, told her to delete all of them, fixed! She just now called and asked if her daughter can come over Saturday and I replace her card like I did hers..........This got me to thinking, over the last month or so, I have helped 8+ people with something or another. If your not going to use the features of the smartphone, why spend $600.00? You can still look cool and spend alot less money? And Im not talking about rooting or unlocking, I'm talking about simple, everyday life things to make life simple in which the device was made for?
1. Most of these people did not even know Bank of America had an app to check your bank account? (Members1st Credit Union either?)
2. None knew that you can program your Comcast DVR from your phone?
3. All thought you had to pay $29.99 for hotspot?
4. None knew about Google Music?
5. I tell people about Douphin Browser and they look at me like Im crazy?
6. No one, including my boss who is IT manger knew about Nexflix on smartphone?
Maybe it's me being anal, but you would not get at $2000.00 TV and not know how to use it right? and look at all the phones coming to market now, bigger, faster, larger, etc............. Again, just me!

That's US carrier subsidies for you!
Carrier subsidies have f^@k*! up the entire system; $600-$700 devices being sold for $200 or less. People don't value smartphones at all.
Think of it, in reality smartphones cost more than most laptops, televisions and audio equipment etc.
Do people upgrade their TVs every year or two? Heck no! But carrier subsidies allow us to buy brand new phones for $200 every 2 years. And in case of Android phones, wait for 6-to-10 months and some models can be had for $100 or even close to free. Who doesn't like that?
And in turn to make their money, these carriers make us sign contracts and buy expensive data plans even if we don't want to.
I don't know of any other country in the world where they make you buy a data plan if you want to run a smartphone on their network.
You simply buy a phone and buy a plan, that's how it should work.
Lots of people I know in other countries have bought their own phones and run it with a simple voice-only plan. If they need data they pay only for what they use. No $40 data plan forced upon them. I wish our major carriers would adopt this policy.
Heck, I will leave Sprint if something doesn't change soon.
I've been with them for 10 years now and paying $80/month for ****ty service.
I'm waiting to see how its LTE network turns out before resigning any contracts.
DH can $uck it with his unlimited plans!
Ok....rant over! Taking a deep breath now....!
OK, My OP was NOT about data plans and contracts (althought you have some truth), I know people that have had their phone for over 10 years, he** I lost a bet because co-worker has flip Sprint phone with SIM card. That said, it is/was about people buying $600.00+ phones to take pictures and text, PERIOD!!! you can get a free phone for that. If your not going to utilize your smartphone with all it can do, why get it?
As for Data Plans, I have been to..........23 countries in the last 5 years. I took AT&T Tilt, flashed it, VodoPhone SIM from Airport, I'm good. I really only used data twice a day for a few minutes if that. But yes, phone only for your used minutes and what data you uses is subtracted from your minutes, no biggie. But also remember, they don't get the $100.00 up front and 2-year contract, they pay full then pick a plan. (For the record, no matter what phone I had, its not working in South Korea with WCDMA!)

Yeah, sorry about that, didn't mean to hijack your thread.
I would gladly buy my phone at full price if they allowed me the freedom of choosing my plan. But they don't. So I end up paying $100-$200 for the phone and then $1800 over the next 24 months in service charges.
I check my phone for email several times a day (definitely less than 50) but I am an average user with regards to every day usage.
I am around Wi-Fi 95% of the time and so are most users, so I don't need or want their ($hitty & spotty) internet service.
My gripe is this: keep the unlimited plans for those who want it but allow those who don't want it to buy a cheaper plan.
The other thing that really p!$$#$ me off is the iPhone!
As everyone well knows, subsidies are the highest for the iPhones. And where do carriers recover their money, in the plans and contracts. I hate it that I pay money for services that I can never fully utilize so that others can have their iPhones. If iPhones were sold at retail without subsidies, we wouldn't have all the iDiots!
Coming back to your original topic: I'm definitely addicted. I need my phone and check it regularly for email, messages, clock, workouts etc.
I'm hooked and can't live without it now.

DNA Viable Choice for Long-Term HTC Customer

I have only ever owned HTC smartphones, from the original WinMo 6 Touch through my most recent Thunderbolt. Its upgrade time and I'm basically trying to figure out whether staying with HTC is an option for me.
The problem is that one of my major use cases is on airplanes. I need at a minimum to have a couple 1080p movies, 2-3 ebooks and 3-4 3hr+ playlists locally my phone, so 16GB non-expandable is tough for me. Google Music/Amazon Video/Netflix are awesome, but useless without network connections. On the flip side, I have unlimited data so not worried about keeping everything in the cloud otherwise. Also, I had a Thunderbolt and even with the extended battery I would often get off a plane with <20% battery, and with this phone switching to another fully charged battery isn't really an option. Finally, using my Gingerbread Thunderbolt, I have no faith in HTC updating even flagship phones, which undermines the S4 processor/screen is more future-proof argument.
The major upside of this phone for me is price (vs. the Note II, I would buy unlocked so $100 isn't a huge difference but hey), perfect screen size with lots of real estate but one-handed operation (moreso since I do not carry or use a tablet although I have an iPad), my level of comfort with HTC and the developer community (unlocked bootloader!), and build quality (but not design).
What I'm worried about is that there is no way out with this phone. The shortcomings of the Thunderbolt could be fixed via extended battery and by flashing custom/leaked ROMs.
I know this isn't exactly addressing your issues with the DNA but have you ever thought about investing in a tablet? It seems to me that if you need a portable device to watch multiple videos, read books and listen to music for long lengths of time, the Nexus 7 or maybe 10 would be a better way to go than a phone.

That's a great suggestion. Getting a Nexus 7 for couch-surfing duties did wonders for my LTE GNex's daily battery life, and I expect it to be a huge asset on cross-country flights as well.

I seriously thought about getting a tablet (Nexus 4+7 works out cheaper than a Note 2), but generally walk around NYC and don't carry a briefcase. I've always been a bit of a minimalist, which is why I am interested in these phablets in the first place (the screen is large enough to read PDFs and ebooks with ease and nice for video viewing).
I don't carry a 2nd blackberry or anything, so I actually will be using this phone to make phone calls, which is an argument for going Nexus 4+7 instead of the oversized DNA or Note 2. On the other hand, Jawbone makes very nice Bluetooth headsets. I also have such a favorable Verizon contract ($60/month for unlimited data and more minutes and text than I have ever used), that I don't want to switch, especially given how nice it is to have LTE when I end up in places like Milwaukee overnight with useless hotel internet.
The DNA may support OTG mode, what does that mean, with a small adapter you can attach a flash/thumb/usb drive to your phone, you'll be able to stream from this as well. The cables can be as short or long as you want and these would be easily portable. I say MAY because no one seems to know, it's not official but some have gotten it to work
on the flip side, if you're having problems with battery life, an external battery also works, I have one that is about the size of 2 of my fingers put together and it has a 5600mA battery, of course you can't use the USB port for keeping stuff on the phone, but maybe charge it afterwards or while watching a movie that is on your phone perhaps? (alternating between the two)
Some thing like this should solve your battery problems
http://www.brookstone.com/mobile-2600-mah-charger?bkiid=SubCategory_Travel_Batteries_External_Cell_Phone_Battery_Chargers|SubCategoryWidget|802209p&catId=
I'd go to another carrier store and ask to hold a note 2. It's probably the better phone for you imo, unless it doesn't feel comfortable in your hand. If it doesn't and you don't play 3D roaming games nor care too much about the camera, I'd look get a Razr Maxx HD. Plugging the phone into a portable charger is just annoying and you may not see any performance difference with what you do anyways.

he stated that he is buying the phone off contract. Doesn't really matter, sounds like Verizon is going to force off contract users off of unlimited data soon enough...
Then those that bought devices off contract to keep it will be all sorts of pissed off.

Need and want can be 2 different things.
For your specific needs, I guess I don't see the DNA being ideal. Between storage and battery life just doesn't seem like a winner. The Screen on the Note II sounds to be very good, and will probably be better all around otherwise if you're comfortable with its size.

Yeah, this is why I'm just giving up my unlimited data. Even if they didn't I'd have to use a ton of data to justify paying $400 more for a phone I'll probably upgrade again in a couple years. Right now I only use about 200MB/month and I'm sure I'll use more with a faster 4G phone but I doubt it will be that much more - not enough to justify the money.

Verizon hasn't said anything, but they also said that anyone with unlimited data would be grandfathered in and be able to upgrade on contract permanently without losing it. Look how long that lasted, and there's nothing stopping them from forcing users with off contract unlimited data to a different plan.
Then again, they are getting a lot more money out of people buying off contract since they are still paying the same price for a plan that was meant to make up for the lowered phone prices. But I still think they are going to pull it.

There have been multiple rumors since they changed the rules this summer. Come summer of 2014, no one will be left on contract with unlimited. Had a Verizon rep tell my wife that changes are coming next April. I might wait until then to get new phones.

From a cash flow perspective, having people buy off-contract phones is amazing for phone companies, since it takes them well over a year+ to make money on customers when they upgrade (more for heavily subsidized devices like iPhones, less for mid-range androids and feature phones). Verizon needs cash right now to dividend out and build their network, so I wouldn't be surprised if they continue to allow unlimited data for at least another product cycle (July 2013).
I'm going to AT&T and seeing if I can use the Note 2. If I can, I think that is the phone for me.
Thunderbolt is basically useless now without ICS. Mine lags for minutes when I make an outgoing call and often the keyboard freezes and needs a reset before it works again (stock ROM). It got bad enough that when I travel I switch service to a Droid 3 I have lying around.
