[Q] SMS and Phone sharing from Android? - TouchPad General

Is there or do you think it would be possible to send SMS messages or call like you can with other WebOS phones?
MOD EDIT (LP): Please see this Post by 9kracing for a workaround.

SMS, maybe, but I don't believe there is anything inside of this that will allow over-the-air calls outside of Wifi + Skype (or something similar).

sms
well under the message app it says if you have a webOS phone you can bt it and send one but I couldn't by my evo it sucked

Could be possible via DeskSMS. koush's new android/web-app

If Mightydesk can do SMS via the browser, then I'm sure it can be implemented.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/mightytext-pushes-messages-and-incoming-call-alerts-to-your-comp/
Calling can be implemented easily using the Bluetooth headset profile.

any Motorola phone with PhonePortal can do this. I send and receive text messages from my atrix 4G on my touchpad

What about a Htc phone ?

I would also be interested in doing this from my android phone!

so has anyone managed this? Would love this for my desire. I can tether but that's diffrrent.

that's what I'm going to setup when I get home from work today. DeskSMS, besides forwarding texts to Gmail, can also forward them to Gtalk, which WebOS' messenger app supports. So it should (in theory) work nicely

[Q] Connecting TP to HTC EVO 3D
I was wondering if there was anyway to connect the htc evo 3d to the touchpad for text and calling seeing as how no webOS phones are really out.....
Sent from Venpa's awesome 3VO!

Probably not exactly what you're looking for but you can use wireless tether on the evo 3d and then connect the touchpad to the network and run skype. Not sure of any other way.

I wonder if that will even work, because TP will not see the Ad-hoc network created by evo 3d.

I've tried this every which way and I can't get it to work... HELP...

Wifi tether 3.1 beta 2. I tried it from my EVO 3d last night and it was working. I went to settings on the wifi app and chose the epic 4g under device profile. Search for the app on google should come up.

The evo 3d is capable of running in infrastructure mode. I don't know if the built in tether app will put it in that mode, but as smark72 already pointed out, there are other tether apps that will do so.

Stored Wireless Network Passwords

Does anyone know what file and what encryption (type 7 or MD5) are the wireless network passwords stored. I would like to recover this file/ or passwords before I flash the new Froyo build.
If this is straight forward I will write an App to pull this file/Passwords.
Thanks in advance,

Wrong section. In fact, this is probably the wrong forum all together... Why would you need to pull the network passwords for your own network? Just enter them again after flashing. If you don't know your network info, reset your router.

You see I have an extensive list of Wi-Fi networks that I traverse (i.e. Mother's house, GF's house, several buddies, work...) This list seems to grow the longer you run a ROM. This has always been one of the down sides to flashing frequent ROMs. In fact, I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets frustrated having to do this all the time.
WRT your comment about the placement of this post: I plain on creating my first app using Google Inventor. And this is the development section.. Seemed like the logical placement.
Edit: Actually, now that I think about, I will look to backup/ restore all Wi-Fi configuration.

Although the App Inventor seems like a simple WYSIWYG app creation tool, I think it would be perfect for something as simple as what the OP is trying to create.
I also would find this useful though as I also have a large list of access points I hate having to reprogram after every flash.
I'm with ya. I had a nice long list of APs with passwords saved and would love to be able to restore them FROYO does this automatically with its backup and restore settings. I agree this is a great idea.

Don't get me wrong... I can certainly see a use for this kind of app now that I see the reason behind it, but I consider App Inventor to be a joke.

I agree. App inventor is a great idea, but at the same time, it's a disgrace to all of the developers who have put so much time and effort into creating quality apps.
I plan on using AI myself, but it will never replace the quality apps that are on the market, and I have nothing but respect for those guys.

They're stored in "/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf". They're not encrypted at all, in fact.
You do need root to read this file, though.

Hate the new market?

If you're like me and really don't care for the new market I thought I'd share this tip.open terminal emulator and type
Su
pm disable com.android.vending. updater
and NO more market updating itself .If you already got the update go to applications-manage-all-market-uninstall updates and boom back to the old.

I hate the new market too. When you complete the first part it said [1] killed in terminal. Does that means it done right.
Gonna give this a go myself.
I "hate " the new market!
It's functional, but really quite unfriendly for me to use.
thank you for the terminal trick! ....g
Edit ...
I just completed the terminal operation, and my old market is working perfectly...
(Thank you button pushed )......g
It was working for me until I enabled background data/sync.

How do I get the market updater re-enabled? Just change disable to enable? I tried that and never saw it update to the new market through several reboots. Only reason I ask is I want to post this on the infuse forum but want to make sure it can be undone. I WILL give credit where credit is due. Will this also turn off automatic updates of apps? Will it still check for app updates when you go into the market?
Thanks for this tip. I love it. Recently switched from an Aria to a Samsung Infuse but I still like frequenting these forums.

[Q] How do I make a video call?

Sorry if this is a noob question and yes I did a Google & XDA search but all I could find is solutions for Skype and other apps.
I want to make video calls from my Galaxy SII, I don't want to use Skype or any other third party app.
With my iPhone 4 the option was listed under the Contact, just scroll down to the bottom and select FaceTime.
thnx
there is no built in app, apps like skype or oovoo are more universally used on computers and mobile devices
I find that Tango uses the least battery of all of them.
You can also get gtalk enabler from the market and uses Google talk over 3g or wifi. Skype seems to have great quality video while in use also.
You will need to use another app to use video call though as pointed out.

yeah, that gtalk enabler is definitely convenient. Gtalk works pretty damn good over 3G but obviously you can't use it with anyone who doesnt have android, unless they're on their PC
OK I followed the instructions from this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNtK6URa8p8 and Installed everything., I still have the same screen I had before, I don't see any way to initiate a video call.
there is an image of what I have.

once you run that gtalk enabler app, reboot the phone. Once you do that, you can just click on the video camera icon to the right of the person's name in gtalk. The icon will appear ONLY if the user has video capabilities on whatever device they're using at the moment (be it their phone or PC). If the app really did unlock the video feature via 3G, you should not get an error when attempting to make a gtalk video call over 3G.

Why not just use another method? There are tons of apps for android to allow you to make free phone calls from the prime. There might be a way around doing it through browser. I never really messed with the Google one.
I wouldn't be waisting my time complaining here if there was other alternates. there is no other service out there that offers free VOIP phone calls through the US except Google's phone through Gmail.
Google Gmail phone is the first of its kind that I seen since the old phonefree.com and Net2Phone offering free VOIP calls, although those had limits, Google has no limits for US callers.
For the life of me I can't figure out why this is not available to a Google Android operating system. If they at the very least designed Chrome Beta like the Windows Chrome browser, the service would be available. But no!!! Chrome Beta and ICS Browser are like imitation browsers compared to the browsers on the Windows platform that these services are usable on.
Because carriers dont want you to be able to easily make voip calls they want you to buy more minutes from them. Androids sucess and profitability depends on the carriers selling phones running android.

The "gmail phone" you speak of is an extension of google voice. Sign up for a google voice number and login with your google id on the grooveip app.
Voila! free calls to US/Canada from anywhere in the world.
I live in Dubai and use it to call my GF in New york all the time.
Gee, it's too bad there are no alternatives that allow you to make free VOIP calls.
Something like SIPDroid sure would be handy. Well if you can't get SIPDroid on your Prime maybe there is another possibility (or 5).
Maybe if you'd ask about something rather than just gripe and moan, assuming that it can't be done, you'd get some assistance rather than a dose of sarcasm.
You might not want to try to set up a SIP provider though. It will take some research, some reading, and you might have to <gasp> Google for some information. Nevermind the possibility of searching on XDA for information.
People say I'm critical, but that's part of critical thinking. That's a skill you may want to try to develop.

Network Spoofer lets you change websites on other people’s computers from an Android phone. After downloading simply log onto a Wifi network, choose a spoof to use and press start.
Please note that there is no intention for Network Spoofer to include any malicious features. This application is a fun demonstration of how vulnerable home networks are to simple attacks, with permission of the network owner - DO NOT attempt to use Network Spoofer on any corporate or other non-residential networks (eg. at school, university). It becomes very obvious when Network Spoofer is being used on a Network, and use of Network Spoofer will be considered malicious hacking by network administrators.
You can send every web page to a specific site, flip all images, or just pass all network traffic through your phone so you can... have a look. Obviously, this app has malicious potential, so be good, folks. There is also a hefty 99MB download associated with the app. you also need root
Wifi killer: with this app you can disable internet connection for a device on the same network. So if someone (anyone) is abusing the internet wasting precious bandwidth for a Justin Bieber videoclips you could just kill their connection and stay happy with a full bandwidth just for yourself.
