About to get the Atrix - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I switched to att going to the store tommrow to get it. Is it already gonna have gingerbread on it?Cause I would peffrer the way 2.2 looks on the phone than 2.3 cause I like the white look to it and the motoblur launcher is better too.
also for this first month im gonna use the 4gb tethering plan. for just this month and go to the 2gb plan
Does att catch on?If i were to tether on the 2gb plan?it would only be for WoW cause at my friends he only has hughesnet and its horrible.
Iknow with u.s.cellular cdma I would tether about 4gb out of my 5gb a month while roaming for close to a year now and nothing has been said.

so how much data we can use before we get throttled or cap ?

so is there anything like this with verizon ?
i m currently with tmobile and want to switch.

A lot more than tmobile (who has a 2gb cap before they throttle you).
Before july 7th the unlimited data plan for $30 will have no cap which is a big plus for people who live in a 4g area. Starting on the 7th new customers will have to pick data packages what start with 2gb a month for $20 or $30. New plans suck.

Currently with T-Mobile, they don't throttle you until you reach 5 gb. Some plans are different but being with T-Mobile for several years and NEVER been throttled, my plan is 5 gb. I am also going to switch to Verizon to take advantage of their data plan before they change.

new t-mobile unlimited plans are 2gb for the special price, all others are still 5gb and they will throttle you (found out the first month).

Verizon's official position is that they may throttle those that are in the top 5% of data users, esp during peak data usage times. Only been with them a couple of weeks so not sure how hard ass they are. Haven't seen anyone complain.
I've only used about 4gb so far in 2 weeks.
I've been using about 10-15 gigs a month for the last 3 years and have never seen any cap,I'm sure they will start it when the new pricing plans start but I plan to keep my service the way it is.
Posted from my Nokia V560
I have also been told by Verizon employees that plans in place before 7/7/11 will be grandfathered. If you don't have a VZW data plan yet but have been considering it, pull the trigger before the 7th.
I have not been able to confirm that the unlimited cap on grandfathered plans will be "for life" but this has been the general consensus from what I've heard.
so there is no data throttling on verizon as of now ! cause i might just use about 10 -15 gb of 4g in a month.
verizon throttles but that was 3G... not sure if that applies to 4G... yet.
6.6gb in third week and haven't been throttled. unlike the tmobile where i got throttled to 56k speeds.
I have never heard this 5% thing before. I am on a 3g only area and can say my data is getting throttled pretty rough. Been days since I got solid speeds and my girlfriends dinc, my old phone, is getting way better speeds. I am currently over 4.5 gb this month and she is under 2.5

Good god what do you people do to use that much data? If I TRY to use a lot, I may use 4gb in a MONTH! I just don't find out practical to watch full movies on my phone... Sure a youtube video every now and then, but not a WHOLE movie. Talk about a battery killer...

Recently, in order to save battery whenever im home which is most of the time i switch off the 3G network and go on wifi. Since I dont have 4G coverage near my home yet its much better than running of 3G. not only has it been lowering my data usage which is small to begin with but been making my battery last forever. even on my extended battery.
I have a boring job and no super vision. plus I tether a lot...
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Well data flies when you tether,a movie on the phone might only be 300mb but the same flick on a pc it 2gb,anyway since I have been a vzw slave I have bounced as much a 20gb but average 10-15gb,i drive a truck and this is my internet,as far as speeds go some 3g markets are slow some are fast but I have never seen it throttled,as far as 4g goes fastest I have seen is phoenix, slowest was oklahoma city, los angeles is consistant all over the valley.
Posted from my Nokia V560
I just switched to verizon yesterday after learning this so that I would be grandfathered in. I spoke to 2 different store reps and 1 online rep and they all confirmed that data usage is 100% unthrottled and uncapped if you sign up before the 7th. Now I imagine there is some fine print which says if you use 50GB in a month they can throttle you if they wish, but obviously this is well above and beyond anyone's usage pattern.
On tmobile I was routinely hitting the 2GB cap without doing much at all. I stream a lot of music while I drive, and email a lot of 5MP pictures to myself to watch on my computer so I dont have to worry about a USB cable. I also surf on my lunch break and in the evenings on the couch. I can use about 1GB a week doing this.
I think im getting throttled. my 3g used t be much faster.

Go download speedtest and tell us what you get. Make sure you are doing this in a known good area.
I used over 70GB the first month this was out and never got throttled and still don't(Didn't have internet for that month so my phone became the internet). So its a good bet its quite high and will stay there for the unlimited people. >1MB/sec upload speeds <3 for torrents

I am sick of AT&T's slow sub 1mb's D/U speeds. HELP!!!

I am on the 500mb go phone plan and I live in a "4g" city. The best speed I ever got was 1.8mb's and that was at 11pm.
I have tryed:
1) Lot's of APN's
2) 2 new sims. (4G sims)
3) going to two att store's three times in all.
So I like this phone alot, but the "4g" speeds are sub par and then some. I was thinking to do one of the below if I keep it:
1) Sprint hotspot
2) verzion hotspot
3) Buy a verzion iphone 5 and use it as hot spot.( I don't like the iphone, but if it has LTE then maybe.)
The phone it's self is a 9.5/10 in my book and better any thing else so far.( This is just me)
If I sell the phone then I would go for one of the upcoming phone's. (No iphone if not LTE, better CPU then all or 1080P LCD.)
Thank's all and this is a phone that I realy want to keep.
Well it's either you change to postpaid plan w/ medianet or you do the hotspot thing, your choice.
How do I go to the postpaid plan w/ medianet and are the speeds any better?

You'd have to get a non-smartphone plan. The speeds are way better, usually around 5mb or even higher but it varies on location.
That's the kind of speed I wanted in the first place. Now how should I go to this plan. do I need to call the 611# or could I do it in a store.
Edit: Where is this plan and how do you set it up right and keep your phone#. thanks

I'm not too knowledgeable on this situation since you started on a gophone plan. But I believe if you want to switch without getting stuck on those 2 year contracts, you'd have to order the AT&T Sim Card. Then just set up your minutes and add the medianet plan, btw you may need a dumbphone imei# so try and find a razor or something.
I can't find this plan on their site. I may just go to verzion and get the Nexus Prime, becuase I get 20% off the plan and $50 off the phone, BUT I realy wanted unlimited data.( From job)
Edit: I know it's not out yet and maybe it's just the GS2 HD LTE. This is my first smartphone and 2nd cell phone so I waited for over a year to made my pick and I like this phone alot and hope to fix this.
Dude are you even trying to look? If you be more clearer on what you can't find it be easier to tell you where too look. If your talking about the medianet plan it's in the added service section called Unlimited Non-Smartphone data.
I see it now. now how should I do this and what will the end cost be?
I will not be trying anything intell the next day. can any one put a vid on youtube of this phones 4G speed's. All I have seen is wifi tests. thank's
I have no idea, plan is based on how you choose it to be. So far it's 5$ for the simcard, then the rest is dependent on your minutes and extra services.
How should I buy the sim card and plan. Do I go to the store and ask for this plan or do it online some how. I don't want a two year lock in so how do I miss that mess.
Edit: opps
Can you tell me how I should set it up then. I don't talk on the phone alot or im alot, but Data I need lots and lots of it.
Ok I got a new sim card now what? Do I need to put in a dumb phone first or can I call from the S2?
I got the sim and put it in the phone and tryed the 611# and it does not work. Help!

Galaxy Note AT&T radio tweaks

Is anyone working on tweaking the AT&T Notes radio? I don't mean for TMobile, I mean so that HSPA+ as well as LTE are faster? The reason I ask, is I had/have an HTC HD2 that gets way better data transfer rates on 3g, than this phone does on HSPA+ in the same area. I have been able to hit 3-4Mbits down on this phone, and was getting 5-to almost 8 MBits on the HD2. (There have been a dozen plus radios on the HD2) The data speed on this Note is disappointing.

I easily get 10MB down on my this phone on HSPA+, which is the same as my last phone. I'd say there is something wrong with your phone.

Are you running a stock rom? Mines rooted, but otherwise stock. Also, are you on AT&T?

I'm running into the same issues. I am thinking that since I am a long time AT&T unlimited user, I only have two options available:
Note: I already unlocked, then rooted the stock with Odin, did a back-up with
Titanium, did a nandroid back from the phone, and loaded the clockwork recovery into my phone so that I can load ROMS easier.
Options:
1. Subscribe to AT&Ts NEW service options and I will be subscribed to their
new HSPA+/LTE club (give up unlimited) without any problems.
OR
2. Don't subscribe to any of their new plans, and stay stuck with the Edge and
3G, and Unlimited data services, all while the phone falsely shows 4G at the top of the screen.
My fastest down speed has been around 6.5 MB - depending on where I am while 4G was being displayed on the phone.
It seems to me that the HSPA+/LTE requires a special subscription.
Network Mode does not appear on my phone, so I can't ensure that it
it has a 4G service selected. I was looking for a fix that would turn my Network Mode back on.
I can see a defaulted APN titled AT&T PTA, but it is locked from edits.
If I set my phone to that defaulted AT&T PTA everything works but data. SpeedTest immediately displays, "Try Again".
In my Elixir application, if I choose "Turn WiMax(4G) ON,
I get the following in Elixir:
=====Data======
State: DcInactiveState
disconnected with last try at 4:38 PM
fail because
SERVICE_OPTION_NOT_SUBSCRIBED
===============
So, I think that either we need to figure out how to turn Network Mode back on,
for the AT&T Notes, or give up unlimited and go with their new plan.
Some kind of way it seems like a subscription may be tied into allowing HSPA/LTE speeds.
You don't have to give up your grandfathered unlimited plan for HSPA or LTE. They just upgrade you to the 4G version of the unlimited plan.
You may have to do it in an actual AT&T store (not a dealer) or over the phone with customer care.
Also these phones don't have wimax...

I've been on the phone with a couple of reps., been into an AT&T shop a few times, and they all keep telling me that I have to upgrade to their new plan which does not have unlimited. The best they could offer me was a 5 GB plan. Also, they said I have never been on a smartphone plan with them. Although, I was previously using an HTC HD2 (sounds like a smartphone too me), but it was not a smartphone registered in their system. Records show that I'm a razor user.
They have no record of the unlocked phones that have been using like the HTC HD2. So now, when I take that SIM out of the HTC HD2 and slide it into the Note, I'm not getting 4G.
And finally, they said that if I was previously on one of their Smartphone plans I would be able to transfer to the LTE service.
When I zoom out and look at the big picture, I don't think most people have a need for the extra speed anyway.
Any thoughts... I think I am stuck with the Edge.
4g vs 3g
Don't bother upgrading. I had unlimited, and am now on their 5gb a month plan with tethering. and I am not getting any faster speeds. I seriously doubt it's the plan, and I am getting billed for 4g.

I think maybe I misread your earlier post. Do you mean that you have an AT&T Unlimited plan (calling minutes, etc) or AT&T unlimited data plan?
If you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, they should upgrade you to the unlimited 4G data plan with the new SIM card.
If you have the Unlimited calling plan, then you might have to suck it up and get one of the capped data plans if you really want LTE.
Either way, to get the faster data speeds you would need a new SIM card. The older SIMs (even from last year in some cases) can't handle the faster LTE speeds and can cripple the data speeds on the phone to the point you are describing.
I have the unlimited data and calling plan. Reps. just told me straight out that I will lose the unlimited data. But after reading Cobra's post, I have no clue as to what the real trigger is for making HSPA+/LTE work on my phone.
Well, I'm getting ready to strip everything to see how ICS looks, and then go from there..
I guess Cobra there is still no answer. You switched and it is still slow, I did not switch and it is still slow. Does the LTE service really exist

You guys got me feeling slighted over here Ok, I'm defintely going to follow-up again. I was wondering if your Nexus smartphone was a recognized AT&T phone. The pivotal point for grandfathering unlimited to LTE may be that they will do it only for THEIR phones that were previously recognized as smartphones. When they look up my records it comes back showing that I'm officially using one of their previous motorola razor phones, which at the time was not on a their smartphone plan, even though I was able to use the SIM in an unlocked non-AT&T HTC-HD2 without any problems.
So, maybe if you come from a recognized AT&T smartphone they will upgrade you, but if your last phone registered with them was not considered a smartphone while on an unlimited data plan, then they will not grandfather you in..
I gues it's worth another try.

No. It has to be an "unlimited smartphone data plan". If you have that no matter what phone you are using, you can keep it. Usually you can tell by how much you are paying for the data plan. There was a "unlimited" plan for other non smartphones for like $20 for phones like the Razor etc but the smartphone plan for what were known previously as PDAs was like $39.
So which one do you have? I am pretty sure if you only have the unlimited non-smartphone plan you cannot convert that to a smartphone unlimited plan...
LTE
Yes, and I think there is a list of cities somewhere. Seattle area, as high tech as it is, does NOT have it yet, while smaller cities, and lower tech areas do? Doesn't make sense to me. So for now I am stuck with HSPA+
On my HD2, I had regular 3g speeds, then I did a radio change, and used the Rafpigna Froyo ROM, and suddenly I started getting speeds like my sig pic shows. My data is slower with this ROM, but from what I have been reading around the net, my speeds are pretty typical for a lot of the Notes on HSPA+
Forgot to mention that I installed the leaked ICS ROM, and it is very much worth doing. Data speed went up a little as well. Still not as much as my HD2 was though.

The speed of the network will always vary greatly. They are completely based on your proximity to the tower and the current load from other users on the tower. Unless you can find a tower with no other users on it and you can repeat the test from the exact same spot, there is no way to compare speeds between phones, or even the same phone at different locations.
If you find some threads where people are reporting their speeds, you will see that they vary by massive amounts.
I can say that I am still onthe unlimited data plan and on stock ROM I was getting 10Mbps. It must be your area because my last phone was hitting max capability on HSPA @ 7.2 Mbps.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Noteā„¢
Edit, just to clarify I went from a 3G only phone and finally got a 4G phone and I really don't thing they are trying to throttle your speeds just because you are on 4G with an unlimited data plan.
I was an AT&T rep from a long time ago (before cingular) and one thing that has held true is that all reps are told by corporate to push people into new plans no matter what. I was told as a rep by another rep that even something as swapping phones required new 2 year contracts which was and still is bull.
AT&T arbitrarily swapped my plan when I went from my G1 to a streak because they said I never was on a smartphone plan. I explained to them that I was on a blackjack and went to a G1 (paying $30 a month) and then I went to the streak. They told me tough luck and they were keeping me on the tiered data plan. I calmly asked for their manager, when I was transferred I exploded on the manager telling them that I call every time when I swap phones to make sure everything is good (not needing to upgrade my plan or anything) and that it was their screwup and if they're treating me like this I was going to leave. I promptly got an apology and asked for my current IEMI number and we were done. I threw in words and phrases like improper business practices, bait and switch and other such things. Managers have more "Say" on what they can do, you tend to get things taken care of because they just don't want to deal with you.
that's been my experience with AT&T, they're far from perfect, but if you start yelling and being upset, you're more likely to get what you want. Sad but true.
LTE
Nope, no LTE in Seattle yet. Only HSPA+ Seattle is very high tech, and yet, no LTE here. One of AT&T's major data centers is here as well. Hard to tell why they are slow rolling it out here.
I don't get to see the invoices. My wife works for AT&T, and gets those. She did tell me I am being billed for 4g though.

Simple Mobile on i717 Note Gnote simplemobile carrier

I want to see who else is using SIMPLE MOBILE on this beast of a phone. Then we simplemobiletons can talk about any specific issues or at least know who each other are.
I dont think i have any issues at all that arent the exact same as T-Mobile except one. That i have to change APN to Simple US and simple and insert smpl. into that mms field and save.
actually one question. and this is not gnote specific but applies to gnote.
I have never gotten over say 3-4 mbs down using Data connection. i pay $60 a month for 4G instead of $40 a month for unlimited 3G
normally when i go outside during work in downtown chicago, i get less than 1 sometimes 2gbs.
has anyone else thought maybe that Simple Mobile 4G sucks and is barely better than their 3G if at all better?
i have gnote on simple mobile.. i have the 3g 40 dollar plan. and data barely works at all. do i need the 60 dollar plan? or switch to straight talk?

FWIW, I have ATT (they don't make a distinction between 3g/4g LTE usage plans, I don't think), and the last time I was in Chi which was about a month ago, I was happy to be able to try out the Note on actual LTE.
However, I was quickly disappointed to find out that the hotel's WiFi was considerably faster than LTE and less battery drain (the latter's to be expected, but still...).
The moral of the story is that Chicago might not be the strongest of LTE markets??
Just a thought/observation.

Y'all should just switch to Tmobile's Monthly 4G $30 plan. That's if you don't need that much minutes. Cos you only get 100mins but unlimited txt and data (5gb @ 4G).
Hello mates, I'm using also Simple Mobile here in Puerto Rico, I'd got my G Note 2 weeks ago, average speeds 1.5 to 2.5 mbps, 2 times only over 7mbps, for me, I can live with that download speed, the real problem is with the upload, damn it's really slow, 50kbps average...
FYI, currently installed Saurom 7.1 with Blaze Modem...
im using blaze modem on ics on simple mobile. i only get .11 on speed test..

That's what i have i love the 5gb data but i do miss my minutes. but plan is way more affordable. I wish T-Mobile would stop being cheap and at least give us a gig on the 50 plan. . Even better 30bucks for 2 gigs and 1000 minutes. Cuz i never go over 2 gigs

Hmm.. I've flashed every ICS modem and none of them work. I wonder if it would be worth it to switch to a GB rom :/
good 4g
i can't complain about my data speeds on simple mobile, I'm using the blackstar vii rom and the latest blaze that they got from the tmobile note and i get a got 3-7 mb per second is not bad. I also have the tin foil trick on the antenna, it really works.
Give it a try

Love the Note
I can't complain either. On simple mobiles 3G plan. PadawanV4 ROM with the latest Blaze Radio and I did the foil trick and getting 5MB with only 3 bars. Haven't tested full signal yet. I've been with simple mobile since they kicked off and went through tons of phones, this is by far the best I've gotten.
I have the i717 I had it on an old black star rom on it and it worked fine but when I updated to black star X I cant I get it to connect to the simple mobile servers I can't even make a phone call can anyone post links to the files they were using to get it to work for instance the ROM and the radio the exact radio there's like 13 different ICS blaze modems out there

Galaxy S3 on ATT Go Phone Plan

I was going to purchase a Galaxy S3 from ATT and use it on the go phone plan. The rep at the store told me if I purchased the phone and it didn't work with my go phone sim I would be unable to return the phone. I asked if all I had to do was enter in the correct APN it would work. He said he'd seen other people try and not be able to get it to work. Is this guy full of crap? I understand I wouldn't be getting LTE but figured I would be able to get 3g. I was going to enter in the APN settings that I used on my unlocked tmobile galaxy s2 on the go phone plan.
Yah the guy is full of crap. It would be work but won't be using the phone to its full potential. Have you tried StraightTalk or Tmobile Monthly4G perhaps? I'm currently on Tmo's monthly 4G $30 plan and absolutely love it. I cant imagin myself being tied down to another 2yr contract ever again. I avg around 12-18mbps down with Tmobile btw.

Thanks for the information. T mobile has poor coverage where I am located. I currently have a go phone plan but have thought about using straight talk since it uses att towers and has unlimited data if you don't abuse it.
I see. StraightTalk's data speeds are actually pretty fast. But i've heard that even though it says its unlimited, they do cap you at only 2GBs.

I heard they don't so much cap you as they actually kick you off. I use less than 1 GB a month so it won't be so much of a problem.
I would look into Straight Talk for your needs. I suggest reading this thread for some good user feedback on ST(data cap, coverage, call quality, etc) on ATT http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1681307
