different users possible? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi
i was wondering if there is the possibility to start the pad with more than 1 user profile. for example like a usual windows computer with different accounts.
i'm asking this, because my girlfriend and i want to use the pad, but i don't want to read her emails, facebookinfos, etc.
thats why i think it would be nice to have a possibility to log in as a different user an have my own mailprofiles etc.
is there an option, or is this something for the rom-cooks?
thx

that would be great but im afraid that need to implemented in os level (before zygote run)

You could install a second email program like K-9 and set it to just her account.
FriendCaster Tab for Facebook is a tablet Facebook app that has multi-user login.
Those will not prevent you from reader her stuff or she yours, but it does enable you to avoid having to filter each others info.

but could it be done? or is this just to hard to program?

should not that hard
just use linux scripting to create /data/data-user1, /data/data-user2
but need reboot to change user
and maybe the hardest part is creating user interface to switch between users

boost mobile account app *NOT OFFICIAL, NOT BY BOOST*

sorry for the cross post
i did some looking around and it seems theres no app to check your account on boost mobile, which is odd considering they have 2 android phones and a whole host of unofficial ones
so i created an quick and dirty javascript/html app that has 4 buttons, boost mobile homepage, my account, reboost, and support
it was made with phonegap build, so when you install it says it needs access to everything(phone, internet, sms, etc) but really its only using data, its just the way phonegap build makes the apps, kinda stupid but it works
try it out, tell me if you think it could be handy, or the most useless thing you have ever seen http://tinyurl.com/myboostmobile
hope it is useful for someone besides me lol
so far i have tried it on the native android browser, and something about the way that boost puts in the dashes where your phone number goes on the my account doesnt fly so well, so if you have problems try out opera mini or opera mobile, they are much superior to the native droid browser anyway
http://pastebin.com/kgtiNX6R
thats the source to the app, just so anyone who is worried about installing based on the installer asking for all permissions can see that its not tracking you or anything
That javascript thing is evil, it doesn't work on the Android
browser or Opera Mobile. The only way I've gotten it to work was to install Skyfire (uses the Android rendering afaik), disable JS, fill in the phone, submit, go back, enable JS, and refresh the page and hope it populates.
-- Starfox
yeah the only luck i had was with opera mobile, i just hit the button to remember my username and password for my account(boostmobile.com) so all i have to do is open the app and hit the my account button, i havnt tried skyfire yet with it, but i will definitely give it a go
thanks for your input back starfox, i much appreciate any feedback given
1 for continued development. Excellent idea!

thank you, lol, there wasnt any app for it, which perplexes me, hopefully boost just cancels me out and creates something real instead of my quick and dirty way
appreciate the feedback boominsvx
Get rid of the javascript if possible.
I did not and will not try this. (not with boost)
javascript popup could be replaced with PAGE Maybe...
EDIT: Also, pastebin and similar sites 'own' your code when you paste it on there, not sure about how much or how but I know it's in the terms and conditions somewhere..
ryannathans, i appreciate your input, this is really all just a temporary solution, lol pastebin can own my code all they want its just a few lines at the moment anyways
im working on making this better at the moment, and app that uses boost's login protocol and all their scripts on their server to log in, ie. app comes up, presents you with a login screen, you log in with your boost account details (all of which is sent securely to their server) and bam your logged in to check your minutes and such
im trying to keep sending emails and bothering customer service at boost about this until they just give in and end up creating an app for us, something official that doesnt have to be hackandslashed, so if your on boost and you want an app for checking your balance and so forth keep bothering them too

[APP] SwitchMe Root Profile Manager [SHARE YOUR DEVICE]

Hi everyone. Im one of the developers of SwitchMe, and app that allows multiple secure logins into separate installations of android on a single device. The pr is after the break.
I really need a few people to check into some issues people on the 10.1 have been experiencing. There are some warnings involved:
- testers must perform a full nandroid backup before using the app, it is not our responsibility if you start getting boot loops
- if you report results or bugs, please use the "Write to us" function in the app whenever possible, and always describe the issue in the header of the logs you send
- if you post here, bes sure to include your device type and rom
- if you have apps installed on sd, be sure to mention that as well
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SwitchMe is a unique application for root users that allows you to log in and out of multiple installations of Android just as you would on a desktop computer.
The technology behind SwitchMe saves all of your applications and data, protects it and stores it as a file in memory. You can then log out of an
account and log into a fresh installation of Android or another account with its own unique content.
You may create as many profiles as the memory is capable of holding. Some of these may require very little free memory because they contain few apps,
others will be larger as they contain many applications and lots of cache and data.
Why is this functionality useful?
Privacy - the most obvious benefit is that you can securely share one device among multiple users, which gives you privacy and peace of mind.
Testing - if you are a developer, you can use profiles as clean sandboxes to test your applications and their interaction with the system.
Gaming – with multiple installations of Android on a single device, you can now play online MMOs as different characters.
Speed - the games your kids play slow down your tablet, but with SwitchMe you can easily create profiles without games or instant messengers.
Battery life - when the battery is low but there are important emails or documents to edit later, switch to a profile which only contains these essentials.
These of course are only suggestions - there are plenty of other uses for the functionality SwitchMe offers.

The Lite version allows the creation of two profiles, enough to test on.

Stock Honeycomb 3.2 + pershoot kernel
Its multiple accounts inside one base OS. You can clone your current account, or create fresh installations of the ROM.

Excellent! If you have any issues or suggestions, let me know!
And please rate the app! All you have to do is press the star button in the top left corner of the apps main screen.
Thanks in advance. Good ratings help us invest more time in apps and give other users with similar hardware peace of mind.
Yeah, works like a charm here. Allready purchased the key to support you guys. Had set up one main profile for daily use, one profile for watching movies and one for my mother if she wants to play some games. No problems at all.

SwitchMe 1.2 has been rolled out and now includes a lockscreen replacement:
1.2
Added lock screen for logging in and out
More stable Fast switch implementation
Reworked UI colors
Now, its very important that we get some feedback on how this big new feature works, so please read up on it in the help and post your thoughts!
i tried this app last night on one of the cm9 (feb,14th's) nightlies on my nook color and its nice, i like it.
Thanks, glad to hear it. Be sure to give me some feedback on the lockscreen if you do decide to buy the app!
Its working perfectly here! Thank for this awesome app!
Anything other than praise to report
How can I test the secure login manager if the lite version does not allow secure login?
ATM you cant, but soon you will. In any case, many people have bought the app and it is them that i am calling on. You dont have to if you dont want to. That is something you will no doubt learn about this forum...

I assumed that meant I could test the secure login with the lite version. So I downloaded it, installed it, and found out that I couldn't. Thought you might want to know. Sorry for the inconvenience, I will uninstall it now.
The switch screen will be free in the next version, only password protection will be charged for...

What do you think of yesterday's update?
I have SwitchMe installed on my CM7 Nook Color.
I don't use my (main) profile too often, my girlfriend uses her secondary profile nearly daily. Today I tried to switch to my profile, and I got a message saying the app is not compatible with my device.
I can't switch back to my main profile. I rebooted, and still get the same issue.
There is not a password, I'm using the free version. I am unsure if there was a recent update as my girlfriend is the primary user, and I don't see the SwitchMe app in the Android Market for her profile.
Please advise.
You need to update the app. Look here: http://bit.ly/wGHxRt
Sorry about that, your last update seems to have fallen into that dark, hour long space between a new release and the hotfix.

Thank you for the quick reply. I used the unswitchme.zip file referenced in that post, and ran it in recovery. I got worried when I rebooted and was in my secondary profile, with no way to switch back. I installed SwitchMe from the market on that profile, and it detected both profiles as normal.
The only real issue I see now is that SwitchMe is installed in my secondary profile, not my main profile. If I ever decide to stop using SwitchMe, how can I ensure that my main profile is what's kept as the main, as I can't uninstall it from main account?
Thanks again!
Whatever profile you uninstall it in will be your main profile...

So I would actually need to uninstall it again with the zip file, and reinstall it on my main profile to "fix" the issue and return it to normal?
Not trying to be a pain, just want to fully understand the process, as my girlfriend may be getting her own tablet soon, and I won't need to use SwitchMe anymore. I'd just like to make sure I can safely remove it at some point and go back to using my tablet on it's own without the app.
Thanks again for the great app and very helpful information.
I already answered your question.

[Q] Is something like this possible? Android auto-wipe, selfdestruction or similiar?

(first off sorry for my bad grammar)
Please read the whole post before answering!!
Do to recent events, and after many hours of searching without any useful result, I decided to try making a simple app which instantly deletes/wipes all the data (without any prompt or warning) on your phone (e.g. if your phone gets stolen or you get mugged and you had much sensitive data on it.), formats everything or even messes up the whole device (so the thief can't use it anymore).
But my question is, is something like this even possible?
1. Is it possible to initiate formatiing/wiping with the Android SDK or something else?
2. Is it possible to make an app which can't simply be deleted or still remains after flashing the device?
3.Is it possible to remotely "push" the app on your phone and execute it? (I'm thinking about installing it via the Google Play website and setting the trigger (?) for starting the app on every possible event to instantly delete everything??
4. I guess this needs at least Superuser-rights..?
5. Maybe "we" could start with just automatic and instant ext.-SD card fortmatting?
Another idea is to have two apps:
one which is installed and allowed by the superuser-thingy to execute the wipe
and another one which you can remotely download or "push" via web and doesn't need Superuser-rights, whichs triggers the first app to start wiping so the thief can't deny the superuser promt..
I think this would really help and would've helped me a lot because there are only a few apps like this but afaik they all need a SMS to be triggered but what if the thief takes out/swaps the SIM card?
In my opinion android would seriously need an app like this.
If ur device mfg is samsung Plz read about samsungdive ...i can remote lock .remote wipe .remote location of ur device ...... Search in google or xda samsungdive.com
Check ur setting >location and security .. Hare u find remote control
Sent from my GT-S6102 using Tapatalk 2
yea I know samsungdive but as far as I know it doesn't remain after flashing and I think you can't install if you have a custom rom.
A answer to one of those questions would be really cool (secret bump)

[Q] How to use Desktop/Laptop to send/receive Whatsapp messages?

I've been looking high and low for something that can achieve what is mentioned here, but to no avail. I would like the ability to send/receive messages directly from my Desktop without having to touch my phone (something similar to AirDroid, though unfortunately it only supports SMS).
AirDroid claimed they were able to make it work, though it requires root and other permissions that may infringe privacy rights. this leads me to believe that a similar software should exist.
any recommendations? please don't suggest emulators/BlueStacks - as the experience is suboptimal, and/or one would be required to have a separate phone number or sign out from the phone service in order to use it exclusively on the desktop.
Thanks in advance for your help!
I know you said not to mention emulators but you can use a emulator and change the IMEI and MAC Address to the same ones on your phone, then download whatsapp and you will then be able to use whatsapp on both, emulator & phone at the same time.

I was going to say Bluestacks, but you said no emulators. And when you mentioned AirDroid it reminded me of something else, TeamViewer. I use TeamViewer to control my phone from the PC and vice versa (yes you can, in case you didn't know). But you need to install the main TeamViewer app, then the TeamViewer QuickSupport app, then the QS Addon for your specific device. Then you can control your phone from the PC and use WhatsApp.

I don't really know how to change it on bluestacks but I know that 2 devices with same MAC Address can receive messages, and if they were same IMEI too they both will be able to send messages on whatsapp.

the reason why I mentioned no emulators (and similarly, no VNC-like service.. even teamviewer falls under the same category) is that the performance is pretty bad, regardless of how high end your desktop specifications or network connection is (i.e. it can never reach something like 50fps smoothness).
preferably a native app built for this very purpose - welcoming more suggestions!
thanks!
Fantastic idea
I am currently not sure if this is possible due to constants of the What's app service linking to phone numbers.
However, if there was a tool that can apply iMessage like functionality to What's App I would definitely download it.

it is 100% possible because AirDroid has achieved that before, but didn't allow it due to security vulnerabilities.
