is tenfar's cwm outdated? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read a few posts that say to stay away from tenfar's CWM.......why is this? Is it buggy? Outdated? Would I use Romracer's instead? What's the difference?
Edit: Also, do I need an SD card to flash ROMs or can they be done via usb?

Yes, it is Outdated.
Download and install latest Romracer's recovery, its support better our Atrix.
Personally, i flashed roms and kernel from external sd and from internal sd too but not directly from usb.
I don't think you want to try it this way, the safest flashing is from the device itself, without connecting to a pc.
Imagine what can happen when you flashing rom from PC and the PC shutdown...

You're right, I'll wait till I get an SD card, thanks.

you should be ok to flash from the internal sd. it should be mounted as a separate volume. even when i factory reset i don't lose the data on the internal sd.

Correct. No need for an external for flashing.

Isn't flashing with fastboot the safest way?
I voided my warranty.

Via PC?
Long process like flashing with PC and Phone is never safety ...
There is always the risk that the PC can be shutdown during this process and your devices can damaged.
That's why we got Fruit Cakes for example.
Always do this things via phone only without any connect to PC during flashes and etc.
That's one of the reasons i got a good PSU (Corsair) and UPS for my PC

That makes sense. So when I plug my phone in, I can just put it in the root of the partition that shows up in windows, right? Cause that is the internal "SD" card?
Also how do you flash using flashboot? I'm trying to get Alien. From what I've read, I install romracer's CWM and use it to flash......I haven't gotten it to work though because romracer won't install (I think I know the problem though, I didn't delete the recover .sh file before installing)

Yes, this is the root of the internal SD.
I don't know if you can flash ZIP rom file with fasboot, but you can flash img files.
Try to install the new recovery with moto-fasboot, but you can also install it in this way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16421425&postcount=95

I just use the CWMRecovery which installed from market "Rom Manager"
except it does not support external SD, it is working fine. I flash Alien#4 from stock 2.2.2 that way.

i don't have a pc. i have a laptop. the ups is built in. and when you flash with fastboot, if the file is no good, it will not flash. when you flash from your phone, it will flash anything and then you're more likely to get reboot.

I went ahead and installed RomRacer's CWM and flashed Alien v4, I love it so far.
Question: Is there an easy way to mass-download all the apps that I've purchased from the market? I know you can log into the market and send them to your phone, but that takes forever. Same thing for Amazon's app store. Any ideas?

Yes but this is for next time.......
Backup using titanium backup (pay for the pro version, its worth it).
Then after your next flash, open market, install titanium, then restore. bam all your apps back including their settings.
Its gold as its ROM neutral i.e. you can back up and restore apps across whatever ROMs and kernels you switch, as long as you specify only missing apps (so you don't overwrite system apps like dialer etc.)

Umm. TiBU Pro is as easy as it gets : )
You could use other back up programs as well, but it wouldn't be any easier.
I personally use Tibu pro to back up/restore apps
and my backup root to backup retore texts/call logs etc

Well, I will use it in the future, but for now, it's a little too late for that I did however use MyBackup Root to back up all my junk. Just not programs....cause I thought I could just re-download them all with ease from the market. Apparently not though

Noob that read the Bible and is kinda lost still

Okay, so after seeing how most people have flashed their phones, I'm tempted to do this sooner rather than later.
So my phone being rooted/unlocked now.
The next step is to back up, I have Titanium Pro, am to only backup apps with it?
Is that considered a sufficient back up of the phone?
I'm running Eclair 2.1update1 - T959UVJI6
I keep reading about Odin, etc so this is throwing me for a loop as to how to do this.
Then I just download a ROM that I like, load it on my microSD and flash through there, (volume button, power button, pressing, etc)?
Thanks, appreciate any help.
You can back up everything with titanium pro. But most people use it to.restore 3rd party apps or to uninstall or freeze apps. Also make sure you have rom manager installed and flash clockwork recovery. Put your rom of choice on your internal sd card not your external micro sd card.

Odin is mostly used when you mess up your phone and it wont work. Search around and read up and download odin and the correct files and have it on hand for.when you bork up your phone.

In titanium backup just click backup all app+data
Do NOT backup red text apps their system apps and will give you a headache later.
Download rom manager and click first option and flash clockwork.
Then press install rom from SD card
It will boot into recovery if its green text recovery press reinstall packages then it'll reboot and go there again click reinstall packages again.
Now its set.
Go to install zip from SD card.
Then again
And find ur rom.
Press install.
Wait till its done.

Its fine to back the red ones up. Just make sure after you flash a new rom that you don't restore any of the red ones. That's when you run into issues.

You have to download some files on your PC for Odin so u can go to a safe rom that wont brick on ya
Yea after you download odin you will need 2 different files. Ones a tar file and the other is a pit file. You only use these via odin. Just be patient when your waiting for it to boot up after flashing. Especially if you flashed a rom that has a voodoo kernel. It will take a good 10-15 minutes to convert. Just let it be.

I was thinking Team Whiskey or Axura, still on the fence with either of these two.
But 10-15 minutes??
I took my SC card out and popped it into my PC, no files other than my music and pictures.
I then renamed the location from TitaniumBackup to external_sd/titaniumbackup, restarted the phone, opened TB to do a batch backup and there were no files listed. I renamed the default save location back to TitaniumBackup and the files were there.
Confusing.
How do I set the batch backups to save to my external SD card?
Or what am I doing wrong?
Im kind of confused as to what you are trying to do. Why would you want to save your titanium backups to your external sd card? There is really no reason to.

Serious issue

Hello, I have to let you know that my knowledge over android is limited.
My (rooted) p500 was working flawlessly.
One day the music app just stopped working. I tried to uninstall it with an unistaller, and try to install it again. It wouldnt install for no reason. Just keeps "installing" and never ends.
Next step was performing full backup with the titanium backup. After that i restored the phone to the factory settings.
And here comes the major problem. Any app i try to intall Just keeps "installing" and never ends. Even from the market or just by running the apk.
I performed several restores to factory setting and it didnt help. I cleared the updates the cashe and the data from the Market app. Didnt help.
Is there any way to bring my phone back to normal?
use AppMonster to do your installs/uninstalls or Astro File Manager. I've experienced this issue with the latest version of titanium backup.
Well at this time my phone is useless. I can't install anything.
Is there a way back?

If its not too late, it might be better to use a lower version ROM as that is V10L. Which I believe is NOT ROOTABLE.

I tried to do the trick but i could make it through the drivers setup. I put the phone in the emergency mode. After that, and seeing that i couldn't got it working. I restarted the phone, did a reset to factory settings. My phone at this time WAS working.
I started installing apps, but after installing 13 of them, it stuck again. From now on it's in the same situation as before, i cannot install any more.
Should i try the trick again?
Try a different sd card.
Do you have custom recovery? If not, install it. And then you can install any custom rom.
Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk.
What else have you done with your phone?
My phone did something like this before when I tried to force it to directly install everything new to my memory card which was Class 2. I used some command prompt stuff I found on the internet to instruct my phone to shift to SD card.\ storage.
It would be able to install some files and I even remember Angry Birds would install to SD card even before the mod. Then it would stop and hang at the installing screen after a while.
The solution (after a week at the service center) was to get a faster memory card. That's what the guy said. My temporary fix was to install everything to the Internal Memory like it is supposed to, and move them to the SD card using Titanium Backup. But this made some apps move too slowly...

I used an unistaller to unistall the preinstalled music app because it stopped working. When i tried to install it again that was it, it hangs at the installing screen forever.
According to the sd the only thing i used the move2sd, but i didn't use it.
My sd is class 6.
Is it normal that the superuser (root) remains after recovering to the factory settings?
Should i try to reinstall the software by myself or let the lg technicians do it?
Mind-blowing (for me) update.
While using the device without the sd, the apps get installed normally!
WTF?
PS: Should i use the FAT or the FAT32 file system on my sd card?
I used another sd and it seems to work till now.
Finally.
I formatted the sd card (fat32 just as it was before) and now everything works perfect.
The only minor issue is that i cannot install the music.apk
It always fails. I like when it fails, at least it doesnt freeze.
Do you now any way i could install it, or should i get over it and use an other music app?

[Q] Partition Question

I'm sorry if this info is already posted, I found similar info in my searches but not exactly what I'm looking for.
I just bought a G and its coming tomorrow. I plan to install clockwork and try out some ROMs (probably VEGAN first). I've seen a lot of information that partitioning the internal memory to 2048/0 is a good idea, but that it will wipe out the internal memory. My questions:
1) Is this accurate? Should I do this before installing custom ROMs?
2) When people say it wipes out EVERYTHING, does that mean the stock OS is gone at that point? Will I still be able to boot into Clockwork at that point to install a ROM?
3) Is it possible / what is the best way to backup the internal memory prior to doing this? Or should I not even worry about that as I will be installing a custom ROM after anyways. EDIT: I should say I'm semi-familiar with clockword with my Droid, I know you can do backups via clockword, is doing a clockwork backup prior to partitioning going to get everything I need in case I brick it? This one may have answered itself hehe.
Thanks!

Ok, so first thing after I get the G Tab, is install nvflash on my PC, hook up via USB and run your batch file? Should I do this before or after installing clockwork? Do I turn the g Tab on after plugging in the USB?
I really appreciate your help.
Partitioning 2048/0 from CWM recovery doesn't wipe the ROM space. I have booted into the tablet right after doing this and nothing else, so clearly it still has the OS. It just wipes /SDCARD (the built in memory).

Read the batch remark, it explain, but yes you install the APX drivers, then plug usb, power on with volume - and run the batch files.
Ramerco is also right when he say partition of the 2048GB only erase the 2G/16G part
but it's still a good idea to keep a full image from the early tablet, there's a NVFLASH recovery from bekit availlable as well
Also there's a shell script called inandop.sh that is taking care of this if there's no sdcard it will create it...
Thanks again guys!

.android-secure help

So I tried to restore my phone multiple times from two different recoveries and every time it stops during it and the screen goes black and the only way to turn my phone on is to pull the battery. Everything but the .android-secure restores and I now have about 200 hundred apps that aren't installed on my phone and I don't want to have to go through all that again, the apps still show as installed on my phone, but the the data on my SD card is missing, does anyone know how I can get this back?
Did you actually wipe your.android_secure folder?

Yes all the apps were on my SD card already. But they were moved over one by one so it wasn't a major hassle. I tried doing it through TWRP now and it won't restore at all anything that is.

No I never did a superwipe or anything of the sort, I didn't have any Titanium Backups either, never planned on flashing a new ROM, still haven't. The backup was through CWM the newest update 4.0.1.5 I tried restoring through that and the Revolutionary 4.0.1.4, neither worked. I moved all the recovery files over to TWRPs backup location and they none of the partitions would restore. My SD is not partitioned and I'm on a rooted stock ROM. I'm only talking about regular App2SD apps that are supported by Android, like Angry Birds and Google Earth.

Those go straight to your secure folder. I don't ever use CWM, as a rule, but it seems that somehow your CWM Nandroid didn't include that folder...I don't know how it got wiped, but my guess is that whatever rom you flashed included a Superwipe script, which would've wiped that folder. (another thing I don't use-Superwipe) If you go in with root explorer or whatever file manager, you can manually verify that a) your secure folder is empty (which it sounds like you've done), and also check under your /clockworkmod recovery folders to see if you actually have a backup for the secure folder.
If it's not there, then, unfortunately it's lost.. You can get the apps back from the market, though.. PM me if you have any 'hard to come by' apps you might need that don't show up on the market.
Good luck.

OK so what recovery did you make the backup? I don't think TWRP backup work in CWM. Also, you don't even NEED to restore the .img you're talking about. You can restore boot, system, data, and it should boot. If you need your apps back, download them. Then back them up with titanium backup. Koushik can be found in #cyanogenmod-dev on freenode, but I don't think you need to bug him. It sounds like your phone boots right? If you need more help come into our d3rp thread, linked in my sig.

A "non-wipe" ROM?

Having troubles with my GSII. Need to flash a new ROM but I don't want to lose all of my contacts, messages etc. so which ROM's won't wipe the data on the phone? Or will any ROM work once I don't wipe the data manually from CWM? I'm on an old build of a Gingerbread MIUI ROM, but would flashing an ICS ROM work fine?
Need to do something - it's the last straw before I bite the bullet and buy an iPhone 4S (saving myself €680 in the process).
Backing up in CWM shows "Error while generating MD5 sum!" when it's nearly complete, backing up to the internal SD card as when I try a normal one it comes up "Error while backing up boot image" straight away. Going out to buy a 4S at around lunch time if it doesn't work so I need help quickly.

Going out to buy a 4S at around lunch time if it doesn't work so I need help quickly.

it is very simple to backup your contacts/call logs/data/apps with MIUI backup, if you are moving MIUI to MIUI
it is strongly recommended to wipe your data before moving from GB to ICS.
I have solution for MD5 checksum error, if you need ask...

Well then I guess I'll flash a GB ROM so. What's the solution can I ask? I'm getting a continuous boot-loop, so unfortunately I cannot back-up via MIUI Backup.

Just try the reverse and if it doesn't work, you may need a compulsive reboot device

What do you mean reverse? Back to stock? I would, but the computer I'm on doesn't have anything on it with relation to my SII.

MD5 checksum error of CWM of the MIUI roms is a known issue,
solutions are:
1) flash a siyah GB kernel from CWM and reboot to its CWM and make a back up,
by default backup will be stored to external SD, make space for atleas 1.5 gb (depends on your apps size, if only few apps 1 GB is enough)
if above also is giving same treble, use the second option which worked for me nicely..
2) Download ROM manager, falsh CWM version from thata, reboot recovery from Rom manager from there make a Backup..
CWM will not read the Backup from External SD by default move your backups to internel backup forlder of Clockworkmod.
then you dowload the latest GB version MIUI, either form XDA or from MIUI sites and flash from CWM, again flash Siyah

I can't actually get into the phone in any way so I guess I'll have to try the kernel. Will any version of the kernel work?

Put it onto the SD card yeah? And apply update or install zip? I'm guessing zip.

I'm fairly sure there's space on the phone. But I can't copy it over because it's saying there's zero space on the phone? As it's including the external SD card files in the total. :S

Please go and get out of my thread. Thanks. Mis-interpretation at its finest. If I wanted to just go ahead and buy the iPhone I would, but I don't. It's the last straw as everything else I've done has failed. You can't deny that they're the most reliable phone there is.
bootloop is the result of launcher & Themes, when I tryed to change themes I got FCs and bootloop on reboot, only worked was factory data reset and flash the same ROM zip from CWM...
but you are concerened about your apps & data, by flashing the siyah I dont think resolve bootloop issue but you may be able to make a back up from its Recovery...
since you have no access to interal SD now, copy to external SD and select kernel zip from install zip from external SD card. i hope it will work..
otherwise you will have to flash Tar version of the Siyah kernel form ODIN in download mod

Thanks. Yes. I hope to just backup with Siyah. I'm currently transferring all 19GB's worth of data on my SD card to my computer in hopes that it will show up with space in Finder. This will take a while.

Also I do have access to it. But only through "external SD" in the internal files.
I don't have an SD card adapter so I can't use that.

actually I dont get.....
Your phone is booted and are you able to access the phone memory throu PC, that is what you mean??
You accuse others of misinterpretation.
Which part of "help-me-fix-my-phone-or-I'll-buy -an-iphone-right-now-in-fact-during-my-lunchbreak" am I misinterpretating?
And with an attitude like yours, why should we care?

Quite a lot. Maybe it came across as a little rude, but there's no denying that iPhone's are the most reliable smart phone on the market. Most Android phones need you to root/flash to get the most out the system, with iPhone's this isn't the case. I know they're not the best phone on the market, which doesn't delight me but I'm contempt owning one. Knowing that something is not likely to go wrong - leaving me without any of my precious data.
With my SII all that happened was the phone died, and then all of a sudden it started boot-looping, after working fine for about a month (had a similar problem before).
Not happy about being trapped into Apple's eco-system, but if that's what it takes to have a reliable phone with superb battery life then that's what I'm going to do. And once there is a jailbreak for the 4S on 5.1 I'll be doing it ASAP.
Anyway; flashed that kernel to my phone. Worked a treat, and the whole back-up was successful (changed my CWM to a touch version too lol). Thanks a lot ZACQ8.
Here's hoping that flashing a new ROM will work smoothly. If so I'm going to sell it, get the $$$, bring the 4S back (I've got 14 day cooling off period) and try out the One X.
I know I should really just be searching but I doubt I'll find a specific answer so... does anyone have suggestions for a reliable ROM?
Download 'My Phone Explorer' on your computer, being using it for two years now with no complaints, used it with a sgs2 recently.

From this website? http://www.fjsoft.at/en/
Quite a generic name for a piece of software, and does it work without actually needing access to the phone in an 'off' state? As still getting boot-loop meaning I've no chance of getting into the phone.
I expect it to not work very nicely with Mac OSX though. Really sounding like an Apple fanboy, eh?
Also, the ROM I'm looking for (quite specific) has to be 2.3 and a non-wipe ROM. Currently downloading 'XWLA4 by TugaPower'. The non-wipe version, let's hope.
Successfully flashed that ROM, getting FC's when trying to enter my contacts. So then went into CWM, tried to restore my old backup but it's saying: "MD5 mismatch!"
How exactly do I fix this to be able to flash my backup of my previous ROM?
