I'm wanting to know usually how long should it take for HTC to release the source code for the 2.3.4 kernel..I'm really wanting to jump on with 2.3.4 but I'm holding off till I.can flash a kernel and overclock..any ideas?
Only HTC knows when they will release it. According to the GPL, they have to release it in a timely fashion. As far as I can tell this new HTC kernel is pretty fast. Of course you are not going to get the benchmarks you would get while overclocked, but in real time use of the phone it runs silky smooth with no overclock. In all honesty I don't notice a difference between overclocked and stock when actually using the phone in everyday use, but I do know it is important to some. I currently use a 2.3.3 Rom, but that is just because the dev hasn't updated yet. I have used 2.3.4 Roms though and I couldn't tell the difference at all. If you have to overclock then wait to update. If you think you can get by on stock clocked CPU then update and wait for the kernels to come rolling in.

Usually they get it out b4 60days. Wanna say most time closer to 30 but could be off on that.

is it? can anyone create a short video of whats new, how much it is smoother ect. thanks
No! If you would read you would see its not a complete kernel its nothing more than a proof of concept. Z's announcement was meant for developers to know he had accomplished the bypass and would be providing source for custom kernels. The current kernel will never be developed or supported. There is absolutely no reason for 99% of the people here to flash this kernel.

As of now, I don't think it's a good idea.
Just wait patiently for devs to do their work.
I don't think the wait will be long
Things sure changed fast in the X10 development in the last few weeks.

Agreed it works. Well for daily use

Backup you're current ROM and try flashing it. I tried it on 2.1 and 2.2 but on wrong bb. For the few seconds it worked (before it restarted) i was amazed at how much more responsive it was. Back to SE kernel for now. If was on the right bb i would gladly use it as a daily rom.
Flash the right bb, it's worth it
Nah, I think I keep my 2.2 until SE releases Gingerbread.
Flash-support and JIT really makes my phone smooth even if its still locked in FPS.
But it will be really interesting to see what the devs can do with custom kernels.
I can't even think of going back to the fps capped froyo roms now. Its just so smooth. Like a new phone.

It's worth it. But hopefully it will get better with 2.3 kernels!
does camera and video recorder work on the new kernal?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
its well worth it! everything is so fast and smooth espesiaclly launcher pros scrolling between homepages. i have had no problems with this custom kernal at all so i think its fir for daily use.
If you woke up and found Samsung released gingerbread for vibrant and T-Mobile pushed it out to your phone, how would you use your phone differently?
Use GPS and Netflix doesn't count...
Just trying to figure out why people are up in arms again about updates.
Thanks to our all devs who have already brought 2.3 to us!!
Nothing different. I just want it.
When I got 2.2, felt the same as 2.1, except for the colorful icons in the settings menu.
I still wanted it though.
Gimmee gimmme 2.3 hurry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can see the memory management of 2.3 is better than 2.2, include Copy, Paste functions and status bar icon more beautyful... waiting for Ice cream
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Lets be clear, looking forward to an os update doesn't equate to dissatisfaction with the devs. It only means your looking forward to the update. And I wouldn't be surprised if some of the devs are anxious either. After all, an update means new source. New source means new roms, new kernels, new life to a phone that many considered to be dead. And if out weren't for the life support provided by the devs, it would surely be dead.
gingerbread optimizes the hummingbird cpu, which would make the overall vibrant experience better.

Valid point though, is it ever enough? We were never guaranteed gingerbread and honestly i've run it and yes it is nicer than froyo but it is by no means worthy of throwing a fit or being pissy or grabbing pitch forks and torches over. Without devs our phone was a freaking embarrassment on 2.1 yes but 2.2 is smooth I dunno what is expected. We got jerked around pretty good last time. But it appears that they are stepping up with new phones. Unfortunately the vibrant may have to wait. It appears there is some change though we will see if it lasts. But seriously we gotta just see what happens no point in getting over pissed

already running gingerbread, so for the most part i don't care. but i would probably flash some rounds of whatever roms come of it.
So if netflix works only on GB for Galaxy S phones, why OP excluded it as a valid reason to get GB update? Right now that is the only reason i want GB on my phone.
I'd enjoy the improved battery life, major bug fixes such as sms being sent to random recipient, better memory management and security hotfixes.

I used them for a while, but now I use bcblends kernel, I think the overall performance is a bit better with bcblends, but I also think a lot of that has to do with the init.d scripts.

Try all of them for a few days, there is no "better" ROM.
I chose flex simply for the enhanced stock path. It's great for "me" but maybe MeanROM, Joel's, Chameleon or ___ might be your best bet.

I installed MeanROM 0.3 last night before going to bed. Today I went from full to 60% faster than I expected this morning, but since then it has gone from 60 to 30% much more slowly. I am definitely going to give it a little time to "settle in" and see how it goes. Plus, given Mikey's history, it'll be on 0.5 or 0.6 by the end of the week Which is why you can't say one is "better" than the other right now - both are still evolving pretty rapidly.
But, maybe I'll give Flex360's a try right now as a point of comparison.
I've run pretty much all of the roms available and am on mean rom since last night..it seems to be running well..I ran omjs for a while and that was nice and smooth ..imho I dont notice much difference between them but maybe that's just bc I dont know what I'm looking for? One thing I dont like is the show JavaScript console bar and do.t understand its usefulness...and it blocks out my status bar even at the top ..

Precisely. Anyone claiming one ROM is the "best" ROM at this point is just biased. They all are based on the exact same software--except for AOSP--and do virtually the same things and have the same tweaks. There isn't enough diversity at this point to crown one ROM "the best."
i think right now i think that pkmn rom is ahead by a little bit only because it has a leetroid like app that allows you to customise the look and feel of the app. lots of things you would normally edit something for is just a checkbox away

Individuals are unique, that's why I always recommending users try something they like for example:
Aosp: fourth bar, speedrom etc.
Sense: nrgz or arhd, etc.
It's honestly better to try various roms than for someone to say so, he may like it now cause you said so but a later he tries another and think so of that one too. Then what?
sent from a smooth place where my fingers trace across the screen to see your face and make you scream!
Project Butter/Speed Rom is by far the best ROM I've tried so far. I would love to use FourthBar but not having a signal indicator really bothers me. Once craigut fixes up some of the bugs, I'll probably be giving that a try again. Knowing how great our devs are here, I'm sure it will be soon! If you're looking at Speed Rom, you might want to wait for version 7 comes out soon, so you don't have to fix everything back up again after you just settled in.
Tried android revolution HD and it was very good but I've been using energy for a while now and I love it. Patiently waiting for a CM9 or CM10

Yes, it has the blue rings spinning boot animation..
And if you search my posts in that thread, I have posted multiple tweaks you can make to the init.post_boot.sh files that make the kernel more battery friendly.
Remember, it isn't just the rom, it is also the kernel in big ways.. use one of the latest faux kernels, tweak the files as I just mentioned.. depending how extreme the changes are you make, you could have over 2 days of mostly standby, or at least 14+ hours with some pretty heavy usage.
Just know, if you are spending all day playing some 3d game it will always kill your battery no matter what rom/kernel you use.. the same as on stock.
