Hey
My question is rather simple, atleast i think it is... Not really sure though.
How different is a CDMA rom from a GSM rom? I just purchased my Evo 3d (GSM) and it will be arriving the coming wednesday. When will we have a similar amount of roms as the CDMA version of the phone?
Please dont get me wrong, im DEFINETLY not saying I dont appreciate the current GSM dev's. Believe me when I say the second i get my phone, im flashing one of those roms. Im just wondering when I will have more of a choice.
Thanks
P.S. Im a recent captivate user (so im used to alot of roms)
They are night and day in software. That is becuase of the hardware. ( that kinda rymes... ) it is different becuase of the carriers. Another realm, the gsm is just out. Will it have the same amount of roms? Nobody will know..as more developers get gsm, expect to see more. Thank is for sure...just a numbers game and now a waiting game. I am sure some of the cdma developers will port over to gsm also, and as more people get the 3vo in gsm, they most likely will port other gsm roms.

GSM and CDMA are cell signal types. Its like the difference between Diesel and regular Unleaded gasoline. They both power cars, and they're really close to the same thing, but if you use the wrong one, you've f'd over your car. Same thing with the phone. If you flash a CDMA rom on your GSM phone, you've pretty much borked it.
Hardware differences between the 2 phones (The ability to capture different cell signals, Lack of a sim card in CDMA, etc) require different software to run it. Porting should happen pretty quickly for the big roms though, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Ah thanks alot I wasnt sure that GSM was the newer model because I basically bought this phone without really thinking. I called up Rogers *****ing about my captivates GPS and they offered me this and I took it. I cant wait for the devs to get the evo GSM versions. With them.. I think the battery life will go to an entirely new level.
I cannot speak for the gsm, but the CDMA gets darn good battery life, even running stock.
How do i know wich one i have? Or is it a to dum question?

Im not sure if this is correct, but you could give it a shot.
Go into settings > about (or about phone)
somewhere in there it should say

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering just how big a difference there is to the ROMs for the CDMA and the GSM version of our phones?
I suppose the kernels are at least different, but the main part of the rest of it must be the same.
Back when I had the HTC Magic there were different versions of the mainboard in the phone. At some point someone figured out how to make the .zip install from recovery include both kernels and push the right one to the phone when installing.
Having development of ROMs fragmented is pretty sad, as there is a lot going on in the CDMA forum and not so much in the GSM forum yet (... yeah, you guessed it, I have the GSM version)
Has anyone taken two ROMs apart and compared?
Wire103
Honestly I can say that for right now you're not missing much (it's only exciting until your cool new rom starts to crash randomly). You'll almost definitely get the important stuff like aosp and mini, although it may take a little bit longer. For a GSM phone, you're not in a bad spot though: between the development for the CDMA 3D and the sensation, you've pretty much got all the ingredients for your GSM 3D hahaha.
now that i have an evo 3d ill be differentiating the apks and libs from cdma vs gsm and try to figure out how to have a universal rom for both phones
Don`t know exactly if it`s possible, maybe any Dev knows this!
What is important to do this, any files etc.I have to remove first
from the CDMA ROM before starting to port?
Any tips?

I think he gets that... Which is why he is asking if "PORTING" is possible.
Honestly I don't have a clue. I mean, you wouldn't think it would be all that much work. Its most probably a situation where CDMA devs don't have GSM phones and can't really use them to test anything since they aren't able to connect anything. Ya know?
That's my guess anyway.

Exactly. Which is why if someone attempts a port by comparing the CDMA and GSM versions and gets us GSM owners to test it out, who knows might actually get something good
From what I've read, the differences between the sources of each version of the E3D are more significantly different than most would think. Add onto that the fact that the kernel sources provided by HTC for the GSM are currently broken, and I don't think porting at this point to be an easy venture.
Hopefully, when we get working kernel sources for the GSM, we'll see this kind of porting.

What other differences besides the kernel and the radio are there? Could you post a link where you read this?
Seems not easy to port from cdma to gsm.
But not possible if I only try to replace some files (boot.img etc.) from
a stock gsm ROM into the cdma ROM?
There are more things to do?
I´m interested, because only cdma version has MIUI ROM.
Maybe there are other devices (gsm) where I can port from.
Which phone would be the most similar,so I can try to port?

I remember a while back on the OG EVO someone ported the acer liquid ROM, which was a gsm phone. Convince a gsm dev to port the ROM or donate a gsm phone to a US dev so they can test on.
So you mean it`s easier I should try to port a acer liquid ROM
to my evo 3D gsm, because acer liquid is similar to evo 3D?
Maybe HTC Sensation ROMs good too,to start porting?
The CDMA box is so rich !!!
While The GSM box is too bleak and too little rom was developed.
Why don't developers develop for GSM ?
Please, we need you !!! Where are you ? Do you hear us ?
I doubt anyone in this forum has a GSM Evo 3D. You're better off asking in general. Maybe you could start up a collection to purchase one of the devs a GSM 3D

You probably have Hboot either 1.49.0011, 0012, 0013 and if these had s-off the Gsm thread would kick along more steadily. No one knows if Team Revolutionary are working on these or not. (I have my doubts) so it is what it is. I learn't to not rush in and check XDA before committing to any phone to make sure it has some life.

There are also a lot of GSM users with hboot .08 and .07 with s-off.
..but the HTC unlock tool is really a pain in the ass and the gsm forums is flooded with questions regarding non working kernels/wifi on S-ON(HTC Unlock Tool)
GSM Forums just got 2/3 devs and only one is really active - Leedroid.
MDJ (virtuos team) got a rom too, but he don't own a evo 3D himself, so he can't be very productive.
Leedroid was a long time busy with private things and got a lot of other devices to support, so the development stucked for a while.
I'm not a linux guy, just know some c/c# but tried to port some things over the GSM Evo 3D (Zeus Mod in sig) and also tried to port some things from the WARM Rom (Tweaks Settings).
But it's very time consuming comparing/merging smali files - 90% of edits causes fcs after reboot - Don't understand why the framework of the CDMA/GSM is so different - what kind of programming style is that HTC?

easy first gsm started out with 2.3.4 while we started with 2.3.3 also cdma 4g wimax vs gsm hspa + [not sure if gsm evo supports HSPA+] anyways yea so mostly gsm vs cdma differences
Thanks JoelZ9614 (developer) interested. But CDMA & GSM is so different. It's reason that the GSM box is too bleak and too little rom was developed. i hope, in the near future it's richer because of you
I've been using cm7 on other devices and it's my first choice. I don't want any sense stuff....
I have a gsm EVO3D in UK.
The cdma version has official cm7 support? Has there been a cm7 port for the gsm version?
Sounds like you didn't bother to do any sort of reading in the DEVELOPMENT forum for the GSM version, which would have answered your question. +1 for being lazy.
Ok, I accept the critic, you could give me a +10 for lazy....
Can you maybe enlighten me a little? I presume there's no cm7 coming, maybe waiting on the cm9...?

Evidently this is a foreign concept to you, but please READ. Go look in the GSM development section, there is a whole thread on it. Do you expect to be spoon-fed? At least make an effort, especially if I just told you where to find the answer.
OK I found the thread a couple of days ago and being new to HTC EVO3D I was hoping there might be more
In the cm7 thread it's plain
Quote:
Left to do:
hardware acceleration
bt avrcp
camera
3d
Thats a rom only for devs to play around with...
Surprising because the cdma version has official cm7 with nightlies and only differs very slightly from the gsm version in terms of hardware... apart from the cdma/gsm network they're completely identical in every way....
I think us GSM users got the short straw. It's a shame there's a fragmented development on thus device which doesn't seem to affect many others.

Not completely identical, to port it over requires a fair bit of work, plus c7 has it's work cut out with the 3D camera's, chances are it'll never be perfect. Plus stock ICS is going to be another hard nut to crack.
As for the lazyness, simply type up the top in the search panel EVO 3D c7 and that would be it.
post on their forum if you need to check on progress, but it's quite taboo to ask for an update from a dev, they tend to turn green and smoke comes out of their ears if they hear that type of question and you may be face palmed.
I cant see what there is to gain by unlocking and installing a rom that only works on an unlocked phone. Why should I give up 4g? Wish I knew how to make my own rom.
Questions should be in Q&A or general, but to answer your question, not everyone lives in a wimax area so what is the point of 4g when there is no signal to use?
^ this. I'll probably need someone to change my diapers for me by the time sprint has 4g in my area. Oops tmi?

a good sprint locked rom would prolly be a good idea actually since a lot of new users prolly gunna end up with this 2.3.5 bootloader and even later as sprint moves to ics

I like yours rocko...have tried them all but the most stable is 2.4..on it now. Tried the 3.5 but it does not have 4g for sprint.
Keep up the good work

Since I also live in a 4g area I'm not willing to give up my 4g by staying perm unlocked. Ive been reading and learning and am testing a locked rom just adding the tweaks hope to be ready in a few days.
I dont live in a 4g area, but most of my daylight time is in a 4g area and I use it. Lets face it! We have to pay for it. It should work. There is no way to compromise for me to give up 4g for some of the custom roms out there. I had an Evo before my Photon and I will say that when the time comes I will ditch this Photon and get a Samsung or HTC phone. Shame on Motorola for locking down their phones. Even the company I work for has given up on motorola and went to other radio manufacturers. It just seem there are more people developing on HTC and Samsung for the very reason that they are "OPEN" and not locked down.
Just my 2 cents...

you need to look up what open is, as it stands htcs "unlock is getting more and more locked down
I understand what you mean about htc being more locked down...that is why htc was second in my choices of my next phone. But I know that whatever man can lock down can be unlocked. It just take the desire too do it. If I was more of a developer and more advanced in this particular field I could spend more time working on it. But I am still learning and trying to figure it all out.
But thanks for your observations, and you developmental skills. We all appreciate it.
Back to the subject... what advantages do an unlocked bootloader with no 4G have over a locked bootloader with 4G.. rocko's rom is pretty nice and extremely smooth and he achieved that with a locked bootloader. Why flash a gingerbread rom that's made for an unlocked bootloader... I can kinda understand the purpose for an ICS rom because of its custom drivers

In the defense of unlocking, I don't remember when was the last time I wasn't on a ICS base rom. I have full 4g in my area and everywhere I have to go to work. but I like customizability and choices. sprint 3g is fast as **** here so I don't miss 4g at all. I don't think I've even run a kernel that can't be overclocked to 1.4 in a while also... so, I stay unlocked. Also, Rocko's roms are sweet.. locked or unlocked thanks for all the hard work...

Rocko,
Your Blur build is what i use when i need to go back to blur Great build! Id run it as my daily, but im a CM addict.
To the OP,
its all in the name of "bc they can." 4G(WIMAX) for me is over rated, 3G downloads emails and all that jazz plenty fast enough. id rather have the latest software then 4G, and ive been glued to CM since my EVO.
MadFlava,
screen sucks for gaming... Solitaire works great on my photon ha ha obviously im not a big gamer. I dont plan to make a move to a different phone unless the devs move. Ill follow them
[rant mode enabled]
(if this affects my chances of ever getting dev status I'm not sure if I care as I've been waiting for almost a year)
Almost every day there's a "I can't find it" thread or post for a file that I personally hosted. Where can these files be found? In a STICKIED thread that I try to maintain and keep up to date. This leads me to believe that the money spent hosting and the work involved in the stickied thread is ignored and unappreciated by many.
People are still flashing 2.3.5electrify pudding on photons after it has been said many times "don't do it". Again this goes back to the previous paragraph. I'm now to the point that if you bork your phone considering that the information is obviously available, you deserve it.
Nobody is developing for locked? Since when? There's three locked ROM's/mods that I know of right now without looking. Rocko Locked to start, which I have said is a bloody good ROM for those that want eyecandy. Imperium Locked is for those that want a barebones ROM that was updated less than a week ago. Here's a surprise for folks. The Deblur/Debloat Script is an ODEXED version of Imperium Locked without the theme change! How many Locked ROMs do you want, or is it that reading and searching are to much of a bother.
Other annoying things are "I don't like the way it looks" complaints and the general lack of "thanks" or support. If you don't like the way a ROM looks then flash a theme. That's what they are there for. If you can't be bothered to flash a theme (and don't say there are none) then don't flash anything. Developing takes effort, time and money. If you are not developing, hitting the "thanks" button or donating then you are leeching, plain and simple.
Also. Why is this thread in the development section? I don't see any development work posted.
[end of rant]
Photon Locked vs unlocked;
Locked ROMs give you the benefit of being very close to the stock base in many cases. Things like PRL and profile updates work and in some cases you can choose to accept an OTA update with little to no issues. You also loose fewer stock features with locked like 4G. The drawback is that battery life is shorter, it runs slower and fine tuning is almost impossible.
Unlocked ROM's give you more choice and greater flexibility with things like full themes, kernels and overclocking/undervolting. It then becomes a choice of need vs want. My daily is my own ROM that is underclocked to 750MhZ single core and NOT undervolted. With the tuning of profiles, my battery fall off is 1% every three hours, video playback is around six hours and during a call my phone never breaks 456MhZ. In short, battery life is insane with a standby mode of 10 days before I get a low battery prompt. This cannot be done with locked. The only thing I loose is 4G but considering the impact 4G has on battery life I can actually transfer more data than if I did have 4G just at a slower rate.
If LTE proves to be more battery friendly then I may change my position but for now I personally choose flexibility and the ability to fine tune over 4G any day.
The DeBlur tool is awesome. I just had to flash back because Im going to participate in the SOAK if I get chosen. Everyone should run the DeBlur tool.
