Very confused about new update and rooting - HTC EVO 3D

I have not installed the newest update from HTC. Ive been wanting to root but to be honest have just been scared of wiping my phone to do so. I have come to the point that I want to root but I am confused as to what to do after I have done a root. I have just come to android from the iPhone and know that updating can break exploits. Android is so much more open than the iPhone that Im a bit baffled just at the sheer options i have at my disposal.
Im on android version 2.3.3 and HTC sense version 3.0. Do i root now with the tools available in the development section?
If I do how do I apply an update after rooting?
First thread/first post. Don't flame me please I forgot my fire suit at home today.

Wow Steve Jobs has been gone less then 24 hours and look what we got here.
Welcome to the family.

If I wasn't on my phone I would post links (not sure how to do that).
I think most first time android owners are intimidated by the whole root process... You'll look back and say that was cake.
Do a lot of reading and asking questions like you are, then head on over to the dev section and look up s-off/root and jump in.
Sorry I couldn't post any links for ya.
Good luck.
Do a lot of reading

Welcome Jack, and as the Chef said, head on over to the dev section and do a bit of light reading. The first several threads are stickied and contain tons of good info. You will find that damn near all the questions have already been asked and answered. I was in your shoes about a year ago when I got my first android phone, an EVO 4G, and I must have spent a week reading before I ever came up for air. I made notes and bookmarked threads and posts that were particularly well-written and precise. If you do something similar, I bet you'll feel ready to flash in no time at all.

I think if you watch the video guides here, you'll see how easy it really is.

Ive watched the videos and it looks pretty easy. Just very scared of losing my contacts, sms texts, etc
I know I need to use titanium backup and sms backup for that stuff. Its like reinstalling windows .... takes a week to do it because I always feel i didnt back up something

Contacts live in the cloud. When you sign it, the phone will sync up and you'll have them all back. Texts are a different story. Like you said, you need to back them up manually. Personally, I delete texts after reading them. I've never understood the desire to keep old texts. If there is important info in them, I take it out somehow and store it elsewhere. But that's just me.

The best part about rooting is you could be s-off and still have everything the way it was before you started the root process. By that time you'll be able to do a nandroid backup if you wanted to try a custom ROM. You'll just have to actually go through it to see what I mean. It's not as much as you think.

The contacts living in the cloud is only true if he has sync turned on with, for example, his Gmail account. If sync is turned off, they only live on the phone. for text I use SMS backup & restore. It's a great free app and it has worked for me numerous times.

Ah, good point. I never even considered not using sync. Are there good reasons not to do so? Or, perhaps the better question, are there BAD reasons for doing so?

It's just a matter of personal preference and whether or not you remember to turn on sync when you first activated the phone.

[Q] Evo 3d to boost and unlimited everything under $25 a month

hello everyone, So I bought a guide that shows how to get my evo 3d onto boost, it could have been a little more detailed in the instructions but oh well. The guide had me root my evo 3d, which I did. Then the guide had me get a boost donor phone, such as the sanyo incognito, which I did.
I followed all of the instructions exactly, and at the end of it only my data works on boost, my texts and phone calls don't. The data works superbly though, and speedtests faster than when I was on sprint, so I've very happy about that, plus I'm on a boost plan that I only pay per minute per text and 50 cents per day of data usage, so if I use no minutes or texts then it's only 15 bucks a month for data, and with the data you can use other apps for phone calls and texting, such as skype (with a phone number from skype which is like 6 bucks a month) so really its under 25 bucks a month for unlimited everything using this method (I hope you guys also agree that it's ingenious).
But I still would like to get the built in phone calls and texting working correctly, do you guys have any ideas or evo 3d to boost guides you can point me to so I can see if there are any differences or steps that were missing in my guide? Or any other ideas or advice you guys have I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, if you any of you have already hacked your evo 3d's to boost mobile if you could post here and maybe put what steps you followed, maybe I will talk with you further to figure out what I missed or didn't do.
THANKS!
You bought a guide...? You do realize this is xda right lol. You could of easily got that information for free with the search button.

Another option is purchase groove ip and add google voice and boom you have a dedicated number and you can send/receive calls and sms with both those programs. My question for you is how you got boost for that low?

I thought this might help as well, it's a zipped packaged I uploaded to megaupload for you all. It contains all of the applications and drivers necessary in the instructions from my last post. megaupload.com/?d=Z9B6WK8Y
Also, everyone probably already knows this but, if you do the data only option from my previous post and want good reliable phone service you can always supplement with unlimited calling with skype for 3 bucks a month (and get your own callable number for like 4 bucks if you want). If you just get the unlimited calling you can add a number so it wont be a random caller id number when you call people, just log into skype and look on your left for caller id number or something like that, and put the number you want (your original number or your google voice number, which is what I put). My skype connection gets better quality than the google voice over my phone's data, and since I make most of my calls at home it's perfect for me and for only 3 bucks a month.
Again, if you can donate, it would be awesome, just go to my daughter's website: kynziealvarez.org

I thought everyone already knew that almost all kegens and program cracks show up as viruses, but it's really just a false positive. I suppose it's interesting to find out there are still people in the world who still don't know that.
Oh, and on my previous post, when I mentioned supplementing with skype, I meant I use skype for phone calls on my computer, not on my phone, in case there was any confusion.
I still have zero thanks? hmm that sucks, very discouraging.

1. Its not a false positive...Its a virus. But easily removed...it copies itself to the Windows folder.
2. The flash is risky unless you know what you are doing
3. The info is on the internet if you look. I had it over a month ago. My tip is to go through diypda.com - all the info is their if you look. The chinese are way ahead of us so its an interesting read. Translate it and search...
4. How in heck is it only 25 a month!!!! Nice going.

Google Calendar not syncing older events

Hi.
I just noticed that all my calendar events prior to april 12th and right back to june 2011 when I first got the phone have been deleted from my phone, but all other events onwards from april 12th are still on the phone. A sigh of relief when I noticed they're all still there online in google calendar, ie, all events from june 2011 to now. Not sure what happened, but, I did reinstall calendar sync today (before I'd noticed this) because it was partially deleted due to a virus I had a week ago. I say partially because it was still syncing but it took longer and I could tell something wasn't right. It had been effectively uninstalled in control panel, so that's why I reinstalled it.
So I connected my phone, manually synced google calendar sync app in my taskbar, and although it's updating new events from my phone to google calendar online, it's not transferring the old events from april 12th and before that date from google calendar online back to my phone.
I created a test event today directly in google calendar to see if it would transfer to my phone with sync, it did. So what's up with it not transferring my older events from google back to my phone before april 12th?
Bump
Bump. Let's see how many times I can bump this before someone replies or I get told off.
It's a known issue that Google is doing nothing to fix.
Here's a workaround though.
If that doesn't work, here's another one.
Both found with Google.
(Also, see rule #5. Bumping is seen as pretty annoying around here, and doesn't actually incite people to help you)

If I hadn't bumped my thread (after several hours of it receiving no replies and disappearing into the void), there would have been NO replies, making being a posting member here pretty much useless. Get it? These forums are massive with ludicrous amounts of posts every second pushing others off the page very fast, never to be seen again, so bumps are NEEDED to get noticed. Clearly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that in quite a few of your posts you talk down to members, pretty much patronising them.
"in spite of my being annoyed by the bumps as I'm sure many others who knew the answer were"
Lol, seriously, and my last word on this, drop the wannabe moderator act. You're obviously very knowledgeable on phones and have made many posts. And I'm grateful you linked me to a couple of potentially helpful threads which (contrary to what you think) would not have happened if I hadn't bumped my thread. But, I've been here longer than you and long enough to have seen many threads of mine disappear without any response when there's been no bumping. Noone was going to answer my thread without it being bumped, trust me on that, it had already gone to page 3, so my bumping was not the catalyst for why you think I got no answers. Editing my post would have made no difference, it wouldn't bring it back to page 1, and neither was there any need for me to clarify an already crystal clear description of the issue in my OP. I also help people where I can on other forums where I'm knowledgeable in a field just like you, and I leave the lectures on forum etiquette to those in charge.

Probably because I'm sick of people who don't take the 5 seconds it takes to type their problem into google, and incessantly bump their posts to keep it at the top of the forum. But you're right. I should take a step back and not let such things bother me anymore.

While I see how those options would do it, I chose to just purchase Calengoo... I works great and I'm lazy so I don't want to have to do the export/import thing or flip back and forth changing the date. (I did notice that if it's a recurring appointment on the calendar those show beyond the 30 day limit.)
hopefully this is something Google will change at some point. I just don't understand their reasoning for not offering us the choice on how much calendar data to sync.
Just thought I'd add another solution to this problem.
Found it here:
https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/calendar/BG6UUCLcQZ4/J7Zc-l4X_9gJ
Steps:
Go to Google Calendar in your browser (DESKTOP)
Go to Settings (top right cog)
Calendars
Export calendars
Extract the .ics file from the saved zip file
Import calendar (select the .ics file)
That's it, it shouldn't create duplicates, but the calendar on your phone should now show the old events.
Simple but effective

Good job. Much thanks! This one did it!
Didn't work for me. Not sure why these work for some and not for others (like me)... could it really be because of ICS vs JB etc?
Anyway, I'm on a HTC Sensation, JB 4.2.2, and it would be very helpful if I could get important business schedule information from 6 months ago to 8 years ago from google online calendar into my phone, and I can't, and that's just retarded. So if anyone has suggestions on ways to do it, your input would be helpful. Thanks.
-Ryan.
update: well, it took a while but it actually worked... Yesterday, I exported, imported, synced, waited, synced again, and still nothing nothing. Then I posted to this thread. Then today, I read on the calengoo site that they recommend this 'trick' also, so I figured goddaammmit why didn't it work for me? So I looked at my calendar, and lo & behold... data back as far as i care to look! HOORAY!

Back Up Assistant

Just got off a 30 minute call with Verizon support.
Be advised for those new to specific phones (DNA) that you cannot log into your contacts on the Verizon website and view your contacts.
The DNA is sold with a "feature" that automatically bumps you up to Backup Assistant Plus. Whether you want it or not.
What that means is that you will need to set up a new account with gmail....yahoo....etc, before you are able to access and view the contacts you have.
The Verizon rep was not even aware of this and after talking to tech/software support they were able at my approval go into my phone and uninstall the "feature".
You need to log out of the site and then log back in before the uninstall sets.
Verizon tech was not up to speed on this although I'm sure many members here (not noobie me) are all on board with this issue.
This is bloat is a subtle format.
Consider it a Christmas gift from Verizon. One that even they don't know about.
I didn't know people even used Verizon's backup assistant still... I've always used Google to backup my contacts, it works much better IMO.

[Q] imessage-like app for android?

I did do some research but all imessage topics I found were really old.
So I have a couple of questions. Since my phone died last week, I had to resort back to my iphone 4 (I went from iphone to LGOG). So I was wondering if there an app that will allow me to text an iphone/osx user such as imessage does where they can receive on both devices and then respond to either one. Preferably, it would be my end doing all the work (android) and they (iphone/mac) don't have to do anything, but if there is a little work involved that would be okay. They aren't very technical so don't want to confuse them with complex instructions, just magic. I never realized people actually text through their computer, but since I went back to the iphone I've gotten a lot more responses because people are too lazy to go grab their phone if they leave it across the room.
Also, is there an app that will allow group chats on android, again without needing anyone else to install anything. Whenever I receive a group text on my android it would be separate conversations to each person so i would have to respond individually to each person whereas with the iphone it's just one message and sent to everyone and it's all streamlined very nicely.
If I didn't explain anything well enough just let me know and i'll try to better explain. Also I will be rooting and unlocking my phone, and I'm good for paid or free ways of getting things done.
Thanks in advance for all your help.

I know there is competition. But I don't like being tied to iOS as much as I don't like being tied to android or some other OS. I am a believer in that all the OSes should just work together somehow (perhaps with some fairy dust?) and just be amazing like that. I get that won't ever happen, but sadly I have 0 coding abilities. I was really hoping someone would have figured out a way to defeat the imessage authentications or whatever is stopping android from joining in the fun.

Okay thanks, I'll have to look into handcent. I'm surprised it wasn't a native feature. Is it that uncommon to want a group chat to be it's own thread? And yea...I figured texting to a mac would be a long shot, but thinking about it, I figure something like skype or googlechat would work so might just have to go that route.
Yeah I'm sure any IM client would work just fine for what you need, I didn't even think about that one.

Anyone have the old T-Mobile

Does anyone here have the old T-Mobile account usage apk? Used to look like a tag in the notification bar and when you pulled down the bar it had a quick 3 slot summary of minutes used, texts, and data. I used to have it and a backup but inadvertently updated it to the new one and it's terrible. I'd be grateful if anyone has the old version

You could use Titanium Backup to detach it from the Play Store to avoid constant update notifications.
Other than a very basic knowledge of the app as in backing stuff up, restoring and uninstalling apps you can't normally uninstall I am unaware of its capabilities, although I always read that it's an amazing must have app for a rooted device. Is detaching it from the play store a quick process easily explained for a reply or is it easily found doing a search for the prices? I guess I can answer that last possibility myself by having my ass do a search lol. I appreciate it though, that's a really beneficial tip.

Yeah I guess that would help if I put that in the reply wouldn't it lol. My bad, I wasn't sure if you could choose to send a message and it would put it through to the email that is registered to your xda account. I don't have much experience with this stuff. But I digress, it's [email protected]. Thanks a bunch for your help with this.

Yeah looks like that's the one. I detached it so hopefully no more hassle trying to avoid the new one. Thanks a bunch.
