is it a hardware issue? software problems?
I don't know how such a problem could persist for such a long amount of time, I really hope the Nexus S doesn't have this and I would likely shell out money for that (though the lack of HD video recording disturbs me)

Ever since JI6, the GPS has been able to "lock" in, but it gives terrible accuracy. It's accuracy that's important.
JK2 had choppy accuracy, JK6 made it slightly better. JL1 has been dead on for me, it even tracked my accuracy up to big bear (snow mountains in california). I went twice, once with JK2 or JK6 the first time, which sometimes listed me as off road during the trip, but when I went back with JL1, it went without a hitch.
I'm not familiar with these terms, but my accuracy has been fine, it's the speed which bugs me (takes as little as 10 seconds to as long as a whole minute before locking)
JK6? JK2? JL1? modem firmware?
Yep, modem firmware.

Same here. running Axura 2.2 JL1, i just came home from using it. dead on.
I suggest disabling the wifi option in nav setting and the sensor thing, that did keep me from locking originally.

I agree, it is unnecessary and if this doesn't help consider an exchange.
Outstanding GPS Performance After Warranty Exchange!
I recently had to get a replacement phone from Tmobile due to a problem with the haptic feedback. I received a new (not refurbed) phone in original Samsung packaging with a mfg date of 10/20/10. The phone already had JI6 installed.
Since I've had good GPS performance on my previous Vibrant I was a little concernced about what might happen on an exchange. My concerns were definitely misplaced.
The new Vibrant's GPS locks up virtually instantly, faster than my old Vibrant ever did and with higher signal strength and more birds. I've used the navigation extensively and have yet to drop connection while navigating.
My first experience with the phone's GPS was by accident. We were shopping and I needed to get around a plugged freeway on surface streets I wasn't familiar with. I went into the Navigation app, spoke my destination and was INSTANTLY provided with my location and directions. Subsequent testing has also been 100%.
I've never seen GPS performance this fast and powerful with my previous Vibrant although it worked well enough to get me from point A to point B. The previous phone on occasion would take a minute or two to find my location.

These are typically rom build / version designators. The confusion comes from using these terms to refer to the individual components (kernel, baseband / modem, etc) that have been pulled from any given rom such as the modem. When the a proper context is present, it may not be too hard to tell how the terms are being used. That's not always the case though.
blame samsung
Used out twice today locked and put in an address at a red light, it's fast, if yours isn't working try settings recommended above because it's way faster then my garmin nuvi

I am using JK6 FROYO on my vibrant, I installed it inmediatly after I got my phone with JI6, now I regreth that I don't tested my gps with it... beacuse now with froyo JK6 it's impossible to get a lock.. and the samsung fix doesn't work either
I realize now that Project Nero has JL1 already installed, so that's not it.
also, I have yet to see an answer to my question, what is the issue that causes the GPS to fail on these samsung vibrants?
If we truly knew, we would tell you. Or you would have searched and found the theory/answer(s).

JL1 was horrible for me. Constantly running on edge, and GPS sucked. Back to JK6 and everything is running great, back with strong 3G signal and GPS is acceptable (although accuracy is still off).
Best 2.1 modem JI6
Best 2.2 modem Jk6
Just my opinion

Samsung says the hardware is fine and that it is a software issue.
A few people believe it is quality control issues with the build of the vibrant (could be a loose connection and so forth)
so no one knows for sure, although most people do see changes depending on the software used, both for better and worse.
Not everyone seems to get the same results. (for some people, newer software fixes gps completely while for others it does nothing at all or makes things worse)
and then there are people that have had no real trouble from day one (they are rare, but there are some)
that's all anyone knows.
I think this question has been asked quite a few times already (there's even a few threads on this very page), you might check some of those threads for more info.

Probably multiple issues. Agps and status reporting were clearly busted originally, but that's fixed in later firmware. The accuracy issues on the other hand persist, for me anyway. Some people claim that they have no such problems, even with the exact same software, and if that's the case I can only assume sample variation in the hardware is to blame.

Hi all,
My phone has no GPS signal.
Reboot and then fix GPS in less than 5 seconds.
Don't use GPS, turn it off, after a while, turn it on, no more GPS fixing, no more satellites.
Reboot and then fix GPS in less than 5 seconds.
My fascinate is on ED01, Community Rom 1.3.
Any help?
MA
It's a common issue with the fascinate..just leave gps on. it won't drain your battery any faster unless you have apps that check your location frequently.

I recently began to have the same problem & I leave my gps enabled all the time. Today, it took 2 reboots to get it to come on with the gps status app. Don't recall it happening on commrom 1.2 or earlier. All I've done since updating to commrom 1.3 has been to try the otb1.5 kernel. Wasn't stable for me so I rolled back to 1.3 & ti's blue cwm.

Yes, I am too. No GPS problem with Comm ROM 1.2 and EC01. Until ED01 and ROM 1.3.
Is there any hot fix or just leave it always on and waiting for the next Gingerbread?
Or do we have any soft that monitoring GPS chip and wake it up?
Current config:
MIUI 1.9.16
ROM: ED05
Kernel: Glitch v12 HL (9/22/11)
Glitch 9/22/11 has been a HUGE improvement on my phone's speed, stability and smoothness. However, I'm still getting quite a lag time (3-5 min.) before the Fascinate connects to the satellites when using GPS for navigation.
I'm currently looking at Radio EC09.
Are there any recommendations or thoughts?
Do you leave your GPS on all the time? I've found my GPS takes a lot longer to lock if I was only turning it on When I need it. Now I leave it on all the time and most of the time it locks fairly quickly. Some people have better luck with E05, personally my GPS is better on EC09.
Yes. GPS is always left on. I am constantly using GPS to show specific locations as well as Latitude with family and friends.
My fascinate locks a bit quicker than my wife's with the exact same set up. And hers takes more time than mine to find Satellites. She has gone 10-15 min. without it ever finding a satellite lock.

Updated Radio
Decided to Odin EC09 radio.
First GPS lock was nearly instantainiously; however, following uses were not as quick. I'll test it out today and report my findings.
I have tried just about every GPS fix/tweak out there. It seems like everything works well once or twice. Maybe the placebo effect. After a day or two it is always back to the random lock times of seconds to minutes. I have had the best overall luck with the PWGB rom. 9 out of ten times it locks in under a minute which seems to be the best my phone will do.

thats because things get out of wack like the compass or need to be updated like agps data. if youve tried the GPS fixes out there like downloading the gps.conf file from powerwash/geewiz and deleting gps files in miui (not sure about others) then always check out the compass/agps if you arent getting a quick lock.
I usually use GPS status to check it and it downloads AGPS data. I've heard the compass can be a problem but I have seen my phone GPS lock in a few seconds with the compass reading WAY off and I have also seen it take several minutes when the compass is perfect. Seems to be no pattern on my phone.
I have been on EH09 since it came out. Now on PWGB latest version it has consistenly locked quickly since flashing.
Hello fellas.
As you probably can tell, I'm new here.
I bought a Vibrant close to a month ago, and I just flashed ICS Passion v11b5 on it.
But now I have a problem. When I try GPS test, it gives me 1-4 satelites in view, but 0 in use.
Is there a way to fix this? I really use GPS a lot.
Whould appreciate any usefull replies.
Umm about the last 40 pages in the ICS thread is about this issue. It is a well known bug that is being worked on, but no fix yet.
If GPS is that important, you might want a solid, stable 2.2
This is the sole reason i switched from ICS Passion to Bionix-v fishman mod. I love what Neobuddy has done but I had to have a good gps.

I have come from MIUI to ICS Passion v13 w/cleanup patch. With MIUI I had solid GPS performance; with ICS Passion I can see sats but it takes at least 10 minutes to get a lock, if I get one at all. I flashed back to MIUI to check and I get GPS.
I would stay with MIUI, but I get the mute/unmute bug, which I don't get with ICS Passion. I notice in some ICS Passion screen shots that others have the KB5 modem. Mine is KA6. Would flashing to KB5 alter my GPS performance? I haven't been able to check because none of the download links to KB5 modems work. (Multiupload is offline.) Does anyone have the KB5 modem they could post?
Thanks Neobuddy for an otherwise awesome ROM-very smooth.

I did the same thing. I also used the BlueMyst Theme and the ICS fonts. It's really a great, stable, and fast rom.
gps
The gps for the passion rom has always been an issue. The gps is different for everyone. Ive been following the passion rom for awhile and there have been a variety of "fixes" that my or may not work with you. You can try changing the modem first. You can also try to upgrade to passion v13 if u wish to test that. If that makes no difference i suggest you google yet another gps fix for the i9000 (dont worry it works for the vibrant, im using it currently) and flash the fix. If none of those work u might want to google vibrant gps hardware fix (this dkes require takin apart your phone). Goodluck
What has worked for me, and I know that may not be representative of all phones, is the following:
1) flashed passion rom v13RC-1.
2) Backed up Angry GPS with titanium backup
3) Uninstalled Angry GPS with titanium backup
4) Flashed v11b5_boot clockwork, clearing cache and dalvik cache (No factory reset)
5) test GPS before your phone goes into deep sleep with any test app from the market (I used GPS Test)
6) turn off GPS and let your phone go into deep sleep
7) Test GPS again. This is where most people have trouble getting GPS to connect again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362961 has the v11b5_boot I mentioned.
Let me know if anything was unclear or how it worked out for you.
Thanks to all of you for the suggestions. I ended up using the advice from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370910
It suggests installing yagf2.zip. So far, its working after a reboot. Haven't yet tried the deep sleep thing, but I'll let you know. If this solves the gps, then I'm staying with ICS.
I tried the yagf2.zip as well before reverting back to v11b5. GPS does work after reboot, but either the phone will not go into deep sleep (Wake locked) after GPS is disabled, or if you do manage to get it into deep sleep, the GPS will not turn back on after. I tired yagf2.zip with and without angryGPS installed. At first I thought everything was working well after screen off, but I noticed using CPUspy that the phone never actually went into deep sleep. I works as a quick fix for heavy GPS users, but your battery life will be abysmal.
So far I've been in and out of deep sleep (well, my phone has) and I'm still able to get a lock. I'm using CPU spy also and it shows that I am actually entering the phone's version of REM. I have AngryGPS installed and didn't remove it before flashing yagf2.zip. It just shows that Samsung did a crappy job with the gps hardware; all our phones are so different.
EDIT: Just got back from a trip around town in the car. GPS pretty spotty. I'd get a fix for 2 or 3 minutes, then maps would suddenly show me 8 blocks across town driving through a park... then back to real location. meh.

Agreed, great GPS. Wifi calling is also important to me because I travel abroad extensively. (Saves exorbitant roaming charges).
Until the ICS roms become more stable, I'll stick with Bionix 1.3.1 (fishmanmod) with Bali 1.8.8uv kernel.

a u sure?
for i am using the rom ICS_Euphoria_RC1 with a kiss kernell.
The gps could lock at the very time after a reboot (without deepsleep), and worked well before the next reboot.
However, if i dont lock the gps and let the phone goes to deepsleep, the gps will go to sleep and never wake up before another reboot.
that my problem.
could any kernell fix it?
I am on the latest ICS Shostock2 rom and I am having issues getting the GPS to lock on. It typically takes 3-4 minutes after walking/ driving around.... is there anything that can be done about it?
I had the same thing when I first went to shostock2. I flashed back to the UCKH7 modem and that fixed the issue for me.

Would the modem have any effect on the GPS lock?
I could see maybe affecting network location approximation but GPS?
Either way having same issues on my end, tried Kernel change no luck. Might have to try modem now...

I'm not really sure if the modem affects the GPS. In the modems thread, some say it affects their GPS reception and others say it doesn't. For the first few days after switching this ROM, I had horrible cell reception everywhere and I'd drive around for 5-10 minutes before I'd get a GPS lock even though I'd have sats visible. After switching back to the modem I'd always used, reception was better and my GPS locks really quickly. Might have been the modem or just coincidence, though, but worth a shot, imo.
If you do a simple search for 'GPS' in the Shostock thread you will see several recent posts from people reporting a similar issue. Some mention that these GPS issues seem not to be unique to Shostock. In particular, this post by Nosferatuabout teh AGPS patch is very helpful:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28584561&postcount=5919
Use the Google Specific no SSL version, as recommended by Crypted, the AGPS patch dev.
Note that, as mentioned by Nosferatu, if you have a Galaxy S2, you MUST use installation method #2, as the others will not work. All you need to do is copy gps.conf to your /system/etc/ folder using any root explorer. Make sure you back up your current gps.conf, so you can undo the change later if you need to. Read the Shostock and AGPS threads for more info.

UCLE5 but if it doesn't.work out for your area there is a list of all the.modems.in the dev section you can flash
update on the issue: Tried putting on the modem that ends in 7 onto my phone and Nosferatu's fix and it is coming faster for sure but it still is a tad on the slow side.
GPS test reports anywhere between 6 and 10 satellites found and between 3 and 6 in use after about 10 or so seconds.
takes about ten seconds to get a lock and get directions, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less.... any suggestions?
It takes you ~10 seconds to get a gps lock and directions... what's the issue?
